Subarcsecond-resolution images of the rotational line emissions of CS and c-C$_3$H$_2$ obtained toward the low-mass protostar IRAS 04368$+$2557 in L1527 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array are investigated to constrain the orientation of the outflow/envelope system. The distribution of CS consists of an envelope component extending from north to south and a faint butterfly-shaped outflow component. The kinematic structure of the envelope is well reproduced by a simple ballistic model of an infalling rotating envelope. Although the envelope has a nearly edge-on configuration, the inclination angle of the rotation axis from the plane of the sky is found to be 5$^\circ$, where we find that the western side of the envelope faces the observer. This configuration is opposite to the direction of the large-scale ($\sim$ 10$^4$ AU) outflow suggested previously from the $^{12}$CO ($J$=3$-$2) observation, and to the morphology of infrared reflection near the protostar ($\sim$ 200 AU). The latter discrepancy could originate from high extinction by the outflow cavity of the western side, these discrepancies or may indicate that the outflow axis is not parallel to the rotation axis of the envelope. Position-velocity diagrams show the accelerated outflow cavity wall, and its kinematic structure in the 2000 AU scale is explained by a standard parabolic model with the inclination angle derived from the analysis of the envelope. The different orientation of the outflow between the small and large scale implies a possibility of precession of the outflow axis. The shape and the velocity of the outflow in the vicinity of the protostar are compared with those of other protostars.
Sub-arcsecond images of the rotational line emission of CS and SO have been obtained toward the Class I protostar IRAS 04365$+$2535 in TMC-1A with ALMA. A compact component around the protostar is clearly detected in the CS and SO emission. The velocity structure of the compact component of CS reveals infalling-rotating motion conserving the angular momentum. It is well explained by a ballistic model of an infalling-rotating envelope with the radius of the centrifugal barrier (a half of the centrifugal radius) of 50 AU, although the distribution of the infalling gas is asymmetric around the pr…
Sub-arcsecond ($0.^{\prime\prime}5$) images of H$_2$CO and CCH line emission have been obtained in the $0.8$ mm band toward the low-mass protostar IRAS 15398-3359 in the Lupus 1 cloud as one of the Cycle 0 projects of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. We have detected a compact component concentrated in the vicinity of the protostar and a well-collimated outflow cavity extending along the northeast-southwest axis. The inclination angle of the outflow is found to be about $20^\circ$, or almost edge-on, based on the kinematic structure of the outflow cavity. This is in contrast t…
We present single-dish and VLBI observations of an outburst of water maser emission from the young binary system Haro 6-10. Haro 6-10 lies in the Taurus molecular cloud and contains a visible T Tauri star with an infrared companion 1.3" north. Using the Very Long Baseline Array, we obtained five observations spanning 3 months and derived absolute positions for 20 distinct maser spots. Three of the masers can be traced over 3 or more epochs, enabling us to extract absolute proper motions and tangential velocities. We deduce that the masers represent one side of a bipolar outflow that lies nearl…
We wish to investigate the structure, velocity field, and stellar content of the G16.59-0.05 high-mass star-forming region, where previous studies have established the presence of two almost perpendicular (NE-SW and SE-NW), massive outflows, and a rotating disk traced by methanol maser emission. We performed Very Large Array observations of the radio continuum and ammonia line emission, complemented by COMICS/Subaru and Hi-GAL/Herschel images in the mid- and far-infrared (IR). Our centimeter continuum maps reveal a collimated radio jet that is oriented E-W and centered on the methanol maser di…
Water is present during all stages of star formation: as ice in the cold outer parts of protostellar envelopes and dense inner regions of circumstellar disks, and as gas in the envelopes close to the protostars, in the upper layers of circumstellar disks and in regions of powerful outflows and shocks. In this paper we probe the mechanism regulating the warm gas-phase water abundance in the innermost hundred AU of deeply embedded (Class~0) low-mass protostars, and investigate its chemical relationship to other molecular species during these stages. Millimeter wavelength thermal emission from th…
We have analyzed the ALMA archival data of the SO ($J_N=6_5-5_4$ and $J_N=7_6-6_5$), CO ($J=2-1$), and CCH ($N=3-2, J=7/2-5/2, F=4-3$) lines from the class 0 protobinary system, NGC1333 IRAS 4A. The images of SO ($J_N = 6_5-5_4$) and CO ($J=2-1$) successfully separate two northern outflow lobes connected to each protostar, IRAS 4A1 and IRAS 4A2. The outflow from IRAS 4A2 shows an S-shaped morphology, consisting of a flattened envelope around IRAS 4A2 with two outflow lobes connected to both edges of the envelope. The flattened envelope surrounding IRAS 4A2 has an opposite velocity gradient to …
We have imaged 15 molecular-line emissions and the dust continuum emission around the Class 0 protostellar source, IRAS 15398-3359, with ALMA. The outflow structure is mainly traced by the H2CO (K_a=0 and 1), CCH, and CS emissions. These lines also trace the disk/envelope structure around the protostar. The H2CO (K_a=2 and 3), CH3OH, and SO emissions are concentrated toward the protostar, while the DCN emission is more extended around the protostar. We have performed the principal component analysis (PCA) for these distributions on the two different scales, the outflow and the disk/envelope st…
We study protostellar envelope and outflow evolution using Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS or WFC3 images of 304 protostars in the Orion Molecular clouds. These near-IR images resolve structures in the envelopes delineated by the scattered light of the central protostars with 80 AU resolution and they complement the 1.2-870 micron spectral energy distributions obtained with the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey program (HOPS). Based on their 1.60 micron morphologies, we classify the protostars into five categories: non-detections, point sources without nebulosity, bipolar cavity sources, unipolar …
Ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation of CO controls the abundances and distribution of CO and its photodissociation products. This significantly influences the gas-phase chemistry in the circumstellar envelope (CSE) around evolved stars. A better understanding of CO photodissociation in outflows also provides a more precise estimate of mass-loss rates. We aim to update the CO photodissociation rate in an expanding spherical envelope assuming that the interstellar radiation field (ISRF) photons penetrate through the envelope. This will allow us to precisely estimate the CO abundance distributions…
Magnetic fields of order $10^1-10^2$ gauss that are present in the envelopes of red giant stars are ejected in common envelope scenarios. These fields could be responsible for the launching of magnetically driven winds in proto-planetary nebulae. Using 2D simulations of magnetized winds interacting with an envelope drawn from a 3D simulation of the common envelope phase, we study the confinement, heating, and magnetic field development of post-common envelope winds. We find that the ejected magnetic field can be enhanced via compression by factors up to $\sim 10^4$ in circumbinary disks during…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle-2 observations of the HBC 494 molecular outflow and envelope. HBC 494 is an FU Ori-like object embedded in the Orion A cloud and is associated with the reflection nebulae Re50 and Re50N. We use $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O spectral line data to independently describe the outflow and envelope structures associated with HBC 494. The moment-1 map of the $^{12}$CO emission shows the widest outflow cavities in a Class I object known to date (opening angle $\sim$ 150$^{^{\circ}}$). The morphology of the wide outflow is likel…
The morphology of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) can be attributed to interactions between a fast wind from the central engine and dense toroidal shaped ejecta left over from common envelope (CE) evolution. Here we use the 3-D hydrodynamic AMR code AstroBEAR to study the possibility that bipolar PN outflows can emerge collimated even from an uncollimated spherical wind in the aftermath of a CE event. The output of a single CE simulation via the SPH code PHANTOM serves as the initial conditions. Four cases of winds, all with high enough momenta to account for observed high momenta preplanetary…
NGC 1333 IRAS 4A and IRAS 4B sources are among the best studied Stage 0 low-mass protostars which are driving prominent bipolar outflows. Most studies have so far concentrated on the colder parts (T<30K) of these regions. The aim is to characterize the warmer parts of the protostellar envelope in order to quantify the feedback of the protostars on their surroundings in terms of shocks, UV heating, photodissociation and outflow dispersal. Fully sampled large scale maps of the region were obtained; APEX-CHAMP+ was used for 12CO 6-5, 13CO 6-5 and [CI] 2-1, and JCMT-HARP-B for 12CO 3-2 emissions. …
We report a study of the low-mass Class-0 multiple system VLA 1623AB in the Ophiuchus star-forming region, using H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ($J=3-2$), CS ($J=5-4$), and CCH ($N=3-2$) lines as part of the ALMA Large Program FAUST. The analysis of the velocity fields revealed the rotation motion in the envelope and the velocity gradients in the outflows (about 2000 au down to 50 au). We further investigated the rotation of the circum-binary VLA 1623A disk as well as the VLA 1623B disk. We found that the minor axis of the circum-binary disk of VLA 1623A is misaligned by about 12 degrees with respect to the l…
FU Orionis-type objects (FUors) are low-mass pre-main-sequence objects which go through a short-lived phase (~100 years) of increased mass accretion rate (from 10^-8 to 10^-4 M_sun yr^-1). These eruptive young stars are in the early stages of stellar evolution and, thus, still deeply embedded in a massive envelope that feeds material to the circumstellar disk that is then accreted onto the star. Some FUors drive molecular outflows, i.e. low-velocity wide-angle magneto-hydrodynamical winds, that inject energy and momentum back to the surrounding envelopes, and help clear the material surroundin…
We study the grazing envelope evolution (GEE), where a secondary star, which orbits the surface of a giant star, accretes mass from the giant envelope and launches jets. We conduct simulations of the GEE with different half-opening angles and velocities, and simulate the onset phase and the spiralling-in phase. We discuss the resulting envelope structure and the outflow geometry. We find in the simulations of the onset phase with narrow jets that a large fraction of the ejected mass outflows along the polar directions. The mass ejected at these directions has the fastest velocity and the highe…
HL Tau is a Class I-II protostar embedded in an infalling and rotating envelope and possibly associated with a planet forming disk, and it is co-located in a 0.1 pc molecular cloud with two nearby young stellar objects. Our ALMA observations revealed two arc-like structures on a 1000 au scale connected to the disk, and their kinematics could not be explained with any conventional model of infalling and rotational motions. In this work, we investigate the nature of these arc-like structures connected to the HL Tau disk. We conducted new observations in the 13CO and C18O (3-2; 2-1) lines with JC…
We present the results of observations toward a low-mass Class-0/I protostar, [BHB2007]#11 (afterwards B59#11) at the nearby (d=130 pc) star forming region, Barnard 59 (B59) in the Pipe Nebula with the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope (~22" resolution) in CO(3--2), HCO+, H13CO+(4--3), and 1.1 mm dust-continuum emissions. We also show Submillimeter Array (SMA) data in 12CO, 13CO, C18O(2--1), and 1.3 mm dust-continuum emissions with ~5" resolution. From ASTE CO(3--2) observations, we found that B59#11 is blowing a collimated outflow whose axis lies almost on the p…
We report on subarcsecond observations of complex organic molecules (COMs) in the high-mass protostar IRAS20126+4104 with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer in its most extended configurations. In addition to the simple molecules SO, HNCO and H2-13CO, we detect emission from CH3CN, CH3OH, HCOOH, HCOOCH3, CH3OCH3, CH3CH2CN, CH3COCH3, NH2CN, and (CH2OH)2. SO and HNCO present a X-shaped morphology consistent with tracing the outflow cavity walls. Most of the COMs have their peak emission at the putative position of the protostar, but also show an extension towards the south(east), coinciding with…
A significant fraction of planetary nebulae (PNe) exhibit collimated outflows, distinct narrow kinematical components with notable velocity shifts with respect to the main nebular shells typically associated with low-ionization compact knots and linear or precessing jet-like features. We present here a spatio-kinematical investigation of a sample of twelve PNe with morphologies in emission lines of low-ionization species suggestive of collimated outflows. Using archival narrow-band images and our own high-dispersion long-slit echelle spectra, we confirm the presence of collimated outflows in H…
It is not well known what drives the chemistry of a protostellar envelope, in particular the role of the stellar mass and the outflows on its chemical enrichment. We study the chemical structure of NGC 1333 IRAS 4A in order to (i) investigate the influence of the outflows on the chemistry, (ii) constrain the age of our object, (iii) compare it with a typical high-mass protostellar envelope. In our analysis we use JCMT line mapping and HIFI pointed spectra. To study the influence of the outflow on the degree of deuteration, we compare JCMT maps of HCO+ and DCO+ with non-LTE (RADEX) models in a …
We aim to reveal the gas energetics in the circumstellar environment of the prototypical high-mass protostellar object AFGL2591 using space-based far-infrared observations of linear rotor molecules. Rotational spectral line signatures of CO, HCO+, CS, HCN and HNC from a 490-1240 GHz survey with Herschel/HIFI, complemented by ground-based JCMT and IRAM 30m spectra, cover transitions with E(up)/k between 5 and ~300 K (750K for 12C16O, using selected frequency settings up to 1850 GHz). The resolved spectral line profiles are used to separate and study various kinematic components. The line profil…
IRAS 19475+3119 is a quadrupolar pre-planetary nebula (PPN), with two bipolar lobes, one in the east-west (E-W) direction and one in the southeast-northwest (SE-NW) direction. We have observed it in CO J=2-1 with the Submillimeter Array at ~ 1" resolution. The E-W bipolar lobe is known to trace a bipolar outflow and it is detected at high velocity. The SE-NW bipolar lobe appears at low velocity, and could trace a bipolar outflow moving in the plane of the sky. Two compact clumps are seen at low velocity around the common waist of the two bipolar lobes, spatially coincident with the two emissio…
By studying 7 objects in the Lupus clouds we aim to test if a coherence exists between commonly used evolutionary tracers. We present ALMA observations of the continuum and molecular line emission that probe the dense gas and dust of cores and their associated molecular outflows. Our source selection in a common environment allows for a consistent comparison across different evolutionary stages. The quality of the ALMA molecular data allows us to reveal the nature of the molecular outflows by studying their morphology and kinematics. The images in IRAS15398-3359 appear to show that it drives a…
The density profiles of cool envelopes of young Planetary Nebulae (PNe) are reminiscent of the final AGB outflow history of the central star, so far as these have not yet been transformed by the hot wind and radiation of the central star. Obviously, the evolution of the mass loss rate of that dust-driven, cool wind of the former giant in its final AGB stages must have shaped these envelopes to some extent. Less clear is the impact of changes in the outflow velocity. Certainly, larger and fast changes would lead to significant complications in the reconstruction of the mass-loss history from a …
Observations of dense molecular gas lie at the basis of our understanding of the density and temperature structure of protostellar envelopes and molecular outflows. We aim to characterize the properties of the protostellar envelope, molecular outflow and surrounding cloud, through observations of high excitation molecular lines within a sample of 16 southern sources presumed to be embedded YSOs. Observations of submillimeter lines of CO, HCO+ and their isotopologues, both single spectra and small maps were taken with the FLASH and APEX-2a instruments mounted on APEX to trace the gas around the…
We performed mapping observations of the Class I protostellar binary system L1551 NE in the C$^{18}$O ($J$=3-2), $^{13}$CO ($J$=3-2), CS ($J$=7-6), and SO ($J_N$=7$_8$-6$_7$) lines with Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). The ASTE C$^{18}$O data are combined with our previous SMA C$^{18}$O data, which show a $r \sim$300-AU scale Keplerian disk around the protostellar binary system. The C$^{18}$O maps show a $\sim$20000-AU scale protostellar envelope surrounding the central Keplerian circumbinary disk. The envelope exhibits a northeast (blue) - southwest (red) velocity gradient a…
To assess the potential role of magnetic fields in regulating the envelope rotation and the fragmentation of Class 0 protostars, we carried out observations of the dust polarized emission at 0.87 mm with the SMA, in the envelopes of a large sample of 20 Class 0 protostars. We estimate the mean magnetic field orientation over the central 1000 au envelope scales and compared it to that of the protostellar outflow in order to study the relation between their misalignment and the kinematics of the circumstellar gas. We discover a strong relationship between the misalignment of the magnetic field o…
AIMS Our aim is to characterize the size, mass, density and temperature profiles of the protostellar envelope of HH~46 IRS 1 and its surrounding cloud material as well as the effect the outflow has on its environment.METHODS The CHAMP+ and LABOCA arrays on the APEX telescope, combined with lower frequency line receivers, are used to obtain a large continuum map and smaller heterodyne maps in various isotopologues of CO and HCO+. The high-J lines of CO (6--5 and 7--6) and its isotopologues together with [C I] 2--1, observed with CHAMP+, are used to probe the warm molecular gas in the inner few …
The AGB star $π^{1}$ Gruis has a known companion (at a separation of ~400 AU) which cannot explain the strong deviations from the spherical symmetry of the CSE. Recently, hydrodynamic simulations of mass transfer in closer binary systems have successfully reproduced the spiral-shaped CSEs found around a handful of sources. There is growing evidence for an even closer, undetected companion complicating the case of $π^{1}$ Gruis further. The improved spatial resolution allows for the investigation of the complex circumstellar morphology and the search for imprints on the CSE of the third compone…
We present ALMA 3 mm molecular line and continuum observations with a resolution of ~3.5" towards five first hydrostatic core (FHSC) candidates (L1451-mm, Per-bolo 58, Per-bolo 45, L1448-IRS2E and Cha-MMS1). Our goal is to characterize their envelopes and identify the most promising sources that could be bona fide FHSCs. We identify two candidates which are consistent with an extremely young evolutionary state (L1451-mm and Cha-MMS1), with L1451-mm being the most promising FHSC candidate. Although our envelope observations cannot rule out Cha-MMS1 as a FHSC yet, the properties of its CO outflo…
We present a three-dimensional (3D) study of common envelope events (CEEs) to provide a foundation for future one-dimensional (1D) methods to model the self-regulated phase of a CEE. The considered CEEs with a low-mass red giant end with one of three different outcomes -- merger, slow spiral-in, or prompt formation of a binary. To understand which physical processes determine different outcomes, and to evaluate how well 1D simulations model the self-regulated phase of a CEE, we introduce tools that map our 3D models to 1D profiles. We discuss the differences in the angular momentum and energy …
We use Herschel spectrophotometry of BHR71, an embedded Class 0 protostar, to provide new constraints on its physical properties. We detect 645 (non-unique) spectral lines amongst all spatial pixels. At least 61 different spectral lines originate from the central region. A CO rotational diagram analysis shows four excitation temperature components, 43 K, 197 K, 397 K, and 1057 K. Low-J CO lines trace the outflow while the high-J CO lines are centered on the infrared source. The low-excitation emission lines of H2O trace the large-scale outflow, while the high-excitation emission lines trace a …
Low- and intermediate mass stars experience a significant mass loss during the last phases of their evolution, which obscures them in a vast, dusty envelope. Although it has long been thought this envelope is generally spherically symmetric in shape, recent high-resolution observations find that most of these stars exhibit complex and asymmetrical morphologies, most likely resulting from binary interaction. In order to improve our understanding about these systems, theoretical studies are needed in the form of numerical simulations. Currently, a handful of simulations exist, albeit they mainly…
We present Submillimeter Array (SMA) 1.35 mm subarcsecond angular resolution observations toward the LkHα 234 intermediate-mass star-forming region. The dust emission arises from a filamentary structure of $\sim$5 arcsec ($\sim$4500 au) enclosing VLA 1-3 and MM 1, perpendicular to the different outflows detected in the region. The most evolved objects are located at the southeastern edge of the dust filamentary structure and the youngest ones at the northeastern edge. The circumstellar structures around VLA 1, VLA 3, and MM 1 have radii between $\sim$200 and $\sim$375 au and masses in the $\si…
We present ALMA $^{12}$CO (2-1), $^{13}$CO (2-1), C$^{18}$O (2-1) molecular line observations of a very young proto-brown dwarf system, ISO-OPH 200. We have conducted physical+chemical modelling of the complex internal structure for this system using the core collapse simulations for brown dwarf formation. The model at an age of $\sim$6000 yr can provide a good fit to the observed kinematics, spectra, and reproduce the complex structures seen in the moment maps. Results from modelling indicate that $^{12}$CO emission is tracing an extended ($\sim$1000 au) molecular outflow and a bright shock k…
Stars are generally spherical, yet their gaseous envelopes often appear non-spherical when ejected near the end of their lives. This quirk is most notable during the planetary nebula phase when these envelopes become ionized. Interactions among stars in a binary system are suspected to cause the asymmetry. In particular, a precessing accretion disk around a companion is believed to launch point-symmetric jets, as seen in the prototype Fleming 1. Our discovery of a post common-envelope binary nucleus in Fleming 1 confirms that this scenario is highly favorable. Similar binary interactions are t…
DR Tau has been noted for its unusually high variability in comparison with other T Tauri stars. Although it is one of the most extensively studied pre-main sequence stars, observations with millimeter interferometry have so far been relatively limited. We present NOEMA images of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O, SO, DCO$^+$, and H$_2$CO toward DR Tau at a resolution of $\sim0.5''$ ($\sim100$ au). In addition to the protoplanetary disk, CO emission reveals an envelope, a faint asymmetric outflow, and a spiral arm with a clump. The $\sim1200$ au extent of the CO arm far exceeds that of the spira…
Studying Class 0 objects is very important, as it allows to characterize dynamical processes at the onset of the star formation process, and to determine the physical mechanisms responsible for the outcome of the collapse. Observations of dense gas tracers allow the characterization of key kinematics of the gas directly involved in the star-formation process, such as infall, outflow or rotation. This work aims at investigating the molecular line velocity profiles of the Class 0 protostellar object B335 and attempts to put constraints on the infall motions happening in the circumstellar gas of …
Wind-driven outflows are observed around a broad range of accreting objects throughout the Universe, ranging from forming low-mass stars to super-massive black holes. We study the interaction between a central isotropic wind and an infalling, rotating, envelope, determining the steady-state cavity shape formed at their interface under the assumption of weak mixing. The shape of the resulting wind-blown cavity is elongated and self-similar, with a physical size determined by the ratio between wind ram pressure and envelope thermal pressure. We compute the growth of a warm turbulent mixing-layer…
A massive envelope and a strong bipolar outflow are the two main structures characterizing the youngest protostellar systems. In order to understand the physical properties of a bipolar outflow and the relationship with those of the envelope, we obtained a mosaic map covering the whole bipolar outflow of the youngest protostellar system L1157 with about $5"$ angular resolution in CO J=2-1 using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy. By utilizing these observations of the whole bipolar outflow, we estimate its physical properties and show that they are consistent with mul…
(Abridged) Water is a key tracer of dynamics and chemistry in low-mass protostars, but spectrally resolved observations have so far been limited in sensitivity and angular resolution. In this first systematic survey of spectrally resolved water emission in low-mass protostellar objects, H2O was observed in the ground-state transition at 557 GHz with HIFI on Herschel in 29 embedded Class 0 and I protostars. Complementary far-IR and sub-mm continuum data (including PACS data from our program) are used to constrain the spectral energy distribution of each source. H2O intensities are compared to i…
We present a comprehensive analysis on the evolution of envelopes surrounding protostellar systems in the Perseus molecular cloud using data from the MASSES survey. We focus our attention to the C$^{18}$O(2--1) spectral line, and we characterize the shape, size, and orientation of 54 envelopes and measure their fluxes, velocity gradients, and line widths. To look for evolutionary trends, we compare these parameters to the bolometric temperature Tbol, a tracer of protostellar age. We find evidence that the angular difference between the elongation angle of the C$^{18}$O envelope and the outflow…

Understanding how material accretes onto the rotationally supported disk from the surrounding envelope of gas and dust in the youngest protostellar systems is important for describing how disks are formed. Magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetized, turbulent disk formation usually show spiral-like streams of material (accretion flows) connecting the envelope to the disk. However, accretion flows in these early stages of protostellar formation still remain poorly characterized due to their low intensity and possibly some extended structures are disregarded as being part of the outflow cavit…
We report on an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) study of the Class I or II intermediate-mass protostar DK Cha in the Chamaeleon II region. The 12CO (J=2-1) images have an angular resolution of ~1'' (~250 au) and show high-velocity blueshifted (>70 km s-1) and redshifted (>50 km s-1) emissions which have 3000 au scale crescent-shaped structures around the protostellar disk traced in the 1.3mm continuum. Because the high-velocity components of the CO emission are associated with the protostar, we concluded that the emission traces the pole-on outflow. The blueshifted outflow …
The Young Stellar Object (YSO) W33A is one of the best known examples of a massive star still in the process of forming. Here we present Gemini North ALTAIR/NIFS laser-guide star adaptive-optics assisted K-band integral-field spectroscopy of W33A and its inner reflection nebula. In our data we make the first detections of a rotationally-flattened outer envelope and fast bi-polar jet of a massive YSO at near-infrared wavelengths. The predominant spectral features observed are Br-gamma, H_2, and a combination of emission and absorption from CO gas. We perform a 3-D spectro-astrometric analysis o…
We present a study of the structure and dynamics of the dense gas surrounding the HH 211-mm source, using VLA observations of the ammonia (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions. We find the envelope around this Class 0 source has an elongated geometry, extending about 104 AU in the direction perpendicular to the well-known HH 211 jet, and exhibits a velocity distribution consistent with rotation along the major axis. Our VLA observations indicate that the envelope is mostly in virial equilibrium. However, comparing our data with results from previous studies it appears that the gas within appro…
The S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star $π^{1}$ Gruis has a known companion at a separation of $\approx$400 AU. The envelope structure, including an equatorial torus and a fast bipolar outflow, is rarely seen in the AGB phase and is particularly unexpected in such a wide binary system. Therefore a second, closer companion has been suggested, but the evidence is not conclusive. The new ALMA $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $J$=3-2 data, together with previously published $^{12}$CO $J$=2-1 data from the Submillimeter Array (SMA), and the $^{12}$CO $J$=5-4 and $J$=9-8 lines observed with Herschel/He…
We report the arcsecond resolution SMA observations of the $^{12}$CO (2-1) transition in the massive cluster forming region G10.6-0.4. In these observations, the high velocity $^{12}$CO emission is resolved into individual outflow systems, which have a typical size scale of a few arcseconds. These molecular outflows are energetic, and are interacting with the ambient molecular gas. By inspecting the shock signatures traced by CH$_{3}$OH, SiO, and HCN emissions, we suggest that abundant star formation activities are distributed over the entire 0.5 pc scale dense molecular envelope. The star for…
We report Submillimeter Array observations of SO2 emission in the circumstellar envelope of the red supergiant VY CMa, with an angular resolution of ~1". SO2 emission appears in three distinct outflow regions surrounding the central continuum peak emission that is spatially unresolved. No bipolar structure is noted in the sources. A fourth source of SO2 is identified as a spherical wind centered at the systemic velocity. We estimate the SO2 column density and rotational temperature assuming local thermal equilibrium (LTE) as well as perform non-LTE radiative transfer analysis using RADEX. Colu…
We present 70 and 160 micron Herschel science demonstration images of a field in the Orion A molecular cloud that contains the prototypical Herbig-Haro objects HH 1 and 2, obtained with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS). These observations demonstrate Herschel's unprecedented ability to study the rich population of protostars in the Orion molecular clouds at the wavelengths where they emit most of their luminosity. The four protostars previously identified by Spitzer 3.6-40 micron imaging and spectroscopy are detected in the 70 micron band, and three are clearly detected a…
