The Fundamental Plane (FP) describes the relation between the stellar mass, size, and velocity dispersion of elliptical galaxies; the Faber-Jackson relation (FJR) is its projection onto {mass, velocity} space. In this work we redeploy and expand the framework of Desmond & Wechsler (2015) to ask whether abundance matching-based LCDM models that have shown success in matching the spatial distribution of galaxies are also capable of explaining key properties of the FJR and FP, including their scatter. Within our framework, agreement with the normalisation of the FJR requires haloes to expand in response to disc formation. We find that the tilt of the FP may be explained by a combination of the observed non-homology in galaxy structure and the variation in mass-to-light ratio produced by abundance matching with a universal initial mass function (IMF), provided that the anisotropy of stellar motions is taken into account. However, the predicted scatter around the FP is considerably increased by situating galaxies in cosmologically-motivated haloes due to variations in halo properties at fixed stellar mass, and appears to exceed that of the data. This implies that additional correlations between galaxy and halo variables may be required to fully reconcile these models with elliptical galaxy scaling relations.
In the context of modified Newtonian dynamics, the fundamental plane, as the observational signature of the Newtonian virial theorem, is defined by high surface brightness objects that deviate from being purely isothermal: the line-of-sight velocity dispersion should slowly decline with radius as observed in luminous elliptical galaxies. All high surface brightness objects (e.g. globular clusters, ultra-compact dwarfs) will lie, more or less, on the fundamental plane defined by elliptical galaxies, but low surface brightness objects (dwarf spheroidals) would be expected to deviate from this re…
The conjectures of Hawking-Bekenstein of that gravity and temperature are closely related, was the beginning of the formulation of thermodynamic models of gravity. Using one of these models, we show that the thermal bath temperature of NGC1052-DF2 dwarf galaxy is about 6.5 K higher than the temperature of the thermal bath of the local dwarf galaxies. We claim that this temperature difference is responsible by the behavior of the NGC1052-DF2 galaxy to be apparently a galaxy with lack dark matter. This difference arises due to that the host galaxy of NGC1052-DF2, the elliptic galaxy NGC1052 is a…
The aim of this work is to show that the origin of the Fundamental Plane (FP) relation for early-type galaxies (ETGs) can be traced back to the existence of a fine-tuning between the average star formation rate $<SFR>$ of galaxies and their structural and dynamical characteristics. To get such result it is necessary to imagine the existence of two distinct "virtual planes" for each galaxy in the $\log(R_e)-\log(I_e)-\log(σ)$ space. The first one (named Virial Plane VP) represents the total galaxy mass using the scalar Virial Theorem and the mass-to-light ratio $M/L$, while the second plane com…
The significant deviations among observations and the expectations based on self-similar scaling model of galaxy clusters, especially up to redshift $z\lesssim 0.4$, constrain the evolution of the X-ray clusters scaling relations with the redshift, is claimed that in this redshift range, the data has a strong influence by selection bias. However, also suggests that some non-gravitational processes can be responsible for a weak or almost null evolution, at least to $z\lesssim 0.4$. This almost universality observed in X-ray galaxy clusters can be understood if we assume that the X-ray emission,…

We show that ultra-light scalar dark matter (fuzzy dark matter) in galaxies has a quantum mechanical typical acceleration scale about $10^{-10}\,\mbox{ms}^{-2}$, which leads to the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation. Baryonic matter at central parts of galaxies acts as a boundary condition for dark matter wave equation and influences stellar rotation velocities in halos. Without any modification of gravity or mechanics this model also explains the radial acceleration relation and MOND-like behavior of gravitational acceleration found in galaxies having flat rotation curves. This analysis can be ex…
We use a large suite of hydrodynamical simulations of binary galaxy mergers to construct and calibrate a physical prescription for computing the effective radii and velocity dispersions of spheroids. We implement this prescription within a semi-analytic model embedded in merger trees extracted from the Bolshoi Lambda-CDM N-body simulation, accounting for spheroid growth via major and minor mergers as well as disk instabilities. We find that without disk instabilities, our model does not predict sufficient numbers of intermediate mass early-type galaxies in the local universe. Spheroids also fo…
We perform a flexion based weak gravitational analysis of the first two Hubble Frontier Field clusters: Abell 2744 and MACS 0416. A parametric method for using projected flexion signals as a probe of cluster member mass is described in detail. The normalization and slope of a $L-θ_E$ (as a proxy for $L-σ$) scaling relation in each cluster is determined using measured flexion signals. A parallel field analysis is undertaken concurrently to provide a baseline measure of method effectiveness. We find an agreement in the Faber-Jackson slope $\ell$ associated with galaxy age and morphology for both…
Using estimates of dark halo masses from satellite kinematics, weak gravitational lensing, and halo abundance matching, combined with the Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations, we derive the mean relation between the optical, V_opt, and virial, V_200, circular velocities of early- and late-type galaxies at redshift z~0. For late-type galaxies V_opt ~ V_200 over the velocity range V_opt=90-260 km/s, and is consistent with V_opt = V_maxh (the maximum circular velocity of NFW dark matter haloes in the concordance LCDM cosmology). However, for early-type galaxies V_opt \ne V_200, with the excep…
We investigate the stellar kinematics of the bulge and disk components in 826 galaxies with a wide range of morphology from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectroscopy (SAMI) Galaxy Survey. The spatially-resolved rotation velocity (V) and velocity dispersion ($σ$) of bulge and disk components have been simultaneously estimated using the penalized pixel fitting (pPXF) method with photometrically defined weights for the two components. We introduce a new subroutine of pPXF for dealing with degeneracy in the solutions. We show that the V and $σ$ distributions in each galaxy can be rec…
We present intermediate-resolution spectroscopic data for a set of dwarf and giant galaxies in the Coma Cluster, with -20.6 < M_R < -15.7. The photometric and kinematic properties of the brighter galaxies can be cast in terms of parameters which present little scatter with respect to a set of scaling relations known as the Fundamental Plane. To determine the form of these fundamental scaling relations at lower luminosities, we have measured velocity dispersions for a sample comprising 69 galaxies on the border of the dwarf and giant regime. Combining these data with our photometric survey, we …
We investigate the origin of the relations between stellar mass and optical circular velocity for early-type (ETG) and late-type (LTG) galaxies --- the Faber-Jackson (FJ) and Tully-Fisher (TF) relations. We combine measurements of dark halo masses (from satellite kinematics and weak lensing), and the distribution of baryons in galaxies (from a new compilation of galaxy scaling relations), with constraints on dark halo structure from cosmological simulations. The principle unknowns are the halo response to galaxy formation and the stellar initial mass function (IMF). The slopes of the TF and FJ…
Dark matter (DM) halos of Sc-Im and dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies satisfy scaling laws: halos in lower-luminosity galaxies have smaller core radii, higher central densities, and smaller velocity dispersions. These results are based on maximum-disk rotation curve decompositions for giant galaxies and Jeans equation analysis for dwarfs. (1) We show that spiral, Im, and Sph galaxies with absolute magnitudes M_V > -18 form a sequence of decreasing baryon-to-DM surface density with decreasing luminosity. We suggest that this is a sequence of decreasing baryon retention vs. supernova-driven losse…
We analyse the kinematic and chemical evolution of 203 distant spheroidal (elliptical and S0) galaxies at 0.2<z<0.8 which are located in different environments (rich clusters, low-mass clusters and in the field). VLT/FORS and CAHA/MOSCA spectra with intermediate-resolution have been acquired to measure the internal kinematics and stellar populations of the galaxies. From HST/ACS and WFPC2 imaging, surface brightness profiles and structural parameters were derived for half of the galaxy sample. The scaling relations of the Faber-Jackson relation and Kormendy relation as well as the Fundamental …
We report and provide fitting functions for the abundance of dark matter halos and subhalos as a function of mass, circular velocity, and redshift from the new Bolshoi-Planck and MultiDark-Planck $Λ$CDM cosmological simulations, based on the Planck cosmological parameters. We also report the halo mass accretion rates, which may be connected with galaxy star formation rates. We show that the higher cosmological matter density of the Planck parameters compared with the WMAP parameters leads to higher abundance of massive halos at high redshifts. We find that the median halo spin parameter $λ_{\r…
An improved transformation of the full width at half maxima (FWHM) of the [O III] 5007 line in AGNs to the stellar velocity dispersion, sigma, of the host galaxy is given. This significantly reduces the systematic errors in using the [O III] FWHM as a proxy for sigma. AGN black hole masses, M, estimated using the Dibai single epoch spectrum method, are combined with the new estimates of sigma to give a revised AGN M-sigma relationship extending up to high masses. This shows that the masses of the most massive black holes are systematically higher than predicted by extrapolation of M \propto si…
We derive the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR), namely $f_\star\propto M_\star/M_{\rm h}$ versus $M_\star$ and $M_{\rm h}$, for early-type galaxies from their near-IR luminosities (for $M_\star$) and the position-velocity distributions of their globular cluster systems (for $M_{\rm h}$). Our individual estimates of $M_{\rm h}$ are based on fitting a dynamical model with a distribution function expressed in terms of action-angle variables and imposing a prior on $M_{\rm h}$ from the concentration-mass relation in the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. We find that the SHMR for early-type galaxies d…
A relation between the centripetal acceleration g_obs in galaxies and the gravity due to the baryon distribution g_bar has been found by McGaugh (2016) and Lelli et al.(2017). It also summarizes properties such as the Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations. Below about g_bar= 10E-10 m s^(-2), the observed relation deviates from the 1:1 line, g_obs being much larger than g_bar. The acceleration relation is followed by late and early type galaxies, and also by the dwarf spheroidals where the deviations from the 1:1 line are the largest ones. These deviations are currently attributed to dark ma…
We present a theoretical model for the evolution of mass, angular momentum and size of galaxy disks and bulges, and we implement it into the semi-analytic galaxy formation code SAGE. The model follows both secular and violent evolutionary channels, including smooth accretion, disk instabilities, minor and major mergers. We find that the combination of our recipe with hierarchical clustering produces two distinct populations of bulges: merger-driven bulges, akin to classical bulges and ellipticals, and instability-driven bulges, akin to secular (or pseudo-)bulges. The model mostly reproduces th…
We show that in the Dirac-Milne universe (a matter-antimatter symmetric universe where the two components repel each other), rotation curves are generically flat beyond the characteristic distance of about 3 virial radii, and that a Tully-Fisher relation with exponent $\approx 3$ is satisfied. Using 3D simulations with a modified version of the RAMSES code, we show that the Dirac-Milne cosmology presents a Faber-Jackson relation with a very small scatter and an exponent equal to $\approx 3$ between the mass and the velocity dispersion. We also show that the mass derived from the rotation curve…
Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are spatially extended, low surface brightness stellar systems with regular elliptical-like morphology found in a wide range of environments. Studies of the internal dynamics and dark matter content of UDGs that would elucidate their formation and evolution have been hampered by their low surface brightnesses. Here we present spatially resolved velocity profiles, stellar velocity dispersions, ages and metallicities for 9 UDGs in the Coma cluster. We use intermediate-resolution spectra obtained with Binospec, the MMT's new high-throughput optical spectrograph. We d…
We investigate the relationship between the mass of the central supermassive black hole, M_bh, and the host galaxy luminosity, L_gal, in a sample of quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7 (DR7). We use composite quasar spectra binned by black hole mass and redshift to assess galaxy features that would otherwise be overwhelmed by noise in individual spectra. The black hole mass is calculated using the photoionization method, and the host galaxy luminosity is inferred from the depth of the Ca II H + K features in the composite spectra. We evaluate the evolution in the M_…
Post-starburst galaxies host a population of early-type stars (A or F), but simultaneously lack indicators of ongoing star formation such as OII emission. Two distinct stellar populations have been identified in these systems: a young post-starburst population superimposed on an older host population. We present a study of nine post-starburst galaxies with the following objectives: 1) to investigate if and how kinematical differences between the young and old populations of stars can be measured; and 2) to gain insight into the formation mechanism of the young population in these systems. We f…
We present a new high-precision parametric strong lensing model of the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403, at z=0.396, which takes advantage of the MUSE Deep Lensed Field (MDLF), with 17.1h integration in the northeast region of the cluster, and Hubble Frontier Fields data. We spectroscopically identify 182 multiple images from 48 background sources at 0.9<z<6.2, and 171 cluster member galaxies. Several multiple images are associated to individual clumps in multiply lensed resolved sources. By defining a new metric, which is sensitive to the gradients of the deflection field, we show that we can…
The radial acceleration relation (RAR) in galaxies describes a tight empirical scaling law between the total acceleration $g_\mathrm{tot}(r)=GM_\mathrm{tot}(<r)/r^2$ observed in galaxies and that expected from their baryonic mass $g_\mathrm{bar}(r)=GM_\mathrm{bar}(<r)/r^2$, with a characteristic acceleration scale of $g_\dagger\simeq 1.2\times 10^{-10}$ms$^{-2}$. Here, we examine if such a correlation exists in galaxy clusters using weak-lensing, strong-lensing, and X-ray data sets available for 20 high-mass clusters targeted by the CLASH survey. By combining our CLASH data with stellar mass e…
In this paper we carry out a preliminary study of the dependence of the Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR) with the width and intensity level of the absolute magnitude interval of a limited sample of 2411 galaxies taken from Mathewson \& Ford (1996). The galaxies in this sample do not differ significantly in morphological type, and are distributed over an $\sim11$-magnitude interval ($-24.4 < I < -13.0$). We take as directives the papers by Nigoche-Netro et al. (2008, 2009, 2010) in which they study the dependence of the Kormendy (KR), the Fundamental Plane (FPR) and the Faber-Jackson Relations (FJR)…
I present a simple scheme for the treatment of gravitational interactions on galactic scales. In analogy to known mechanisms of quantum field theory, I assume ad hoc that gravitation is mediated by virtual exchange particles - gravitons - with very small but non-zero masses. The resulting density and mass profiles are proportional to the mass of the gravitating body. The mass profile scales with the centripetal acceleration experienced by a test particle orbiting the central mass; this comes at the cost of postulating a universal characteristic acceleration a0 = 4.3*10^{-12} m/s^2 (or 8*pi*a0 …
GalICS 2.0 is a new semianalytic code to model the formation and evolution of galaxies in a cosmological context. N-body simulations based on a Planck cosmology are used to construct halo merger trees, track subhaloes, compute spins and measure concentrations. The accretion of gas onto galaxies and the morphological evolution of galaxies are modelled with prescriptions derived from hydrodynamic simulations. Star formation and stellar feedback are described with phenomenological models (as in other semianalytic codes). GalICS 2.0 computes rotation speeds from the gravitational potential of the …
The stellar kinematics of the spheroids and discs of S0 galaxies contain clues to their formation histories. Unfortunately, it is difficult to disentangle the two components and to recover their stellar kinematics in the faint outer parts of the galaxies using conventional absorption line spectroscopy. This paper therefore presents the stellar kinematics of six S0 galaxies derived from observations of planetary nebulae (PNe), obtained using the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph. To separate the kinematics of the two components, we use a maximum-likelihood method that combines the discrete kinemati…
The Newtonian gravitational constant $G$ obeys the dimensional relation $[G] [M] [a] = [v]^4$, where $M$, $a$, and $v$ denote mass, acceleration, and speed, respectively. Since the baryonic Tully-Fisher (BTF) and Faber-Jackson (BFJ) relations are observed facts, this relation implies that $G\, a = {\rm constant}$. This result cannot be obtained in Newtonian dynamics which cannot explain the origin of the BTF and BFJ relations. An alternative, modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) assumes that $G=G_0$ is constant in space and derives naturally a characteristic constant acceleration $a=a_0$, as wel…
We present an improved determination of the total mass distribution of three CLASH/HFF massive clusters, MACS J1206.2-0847 (z=0.44), MACS J0416.1-2403 (z=0.40), Abell S1063 (z=0.35). We specifically reconstruct the sub-halo mass component with robust stellar kinematics information of cluster galaxies, in combination with precise strong lensing models based on large samples of spectroscopically identified multiple images. We use VLT/MUSE integral-field spectroscopy in the cluster cores to measure the stellar velocity dispersion, $σ$, of 40-60 member galaxies per cluster, covering 4-5 magnitudes…
Most globular clusters have half-mass radii of a few pc with no apparent correlation with their masses. This is different from elliptical galaxies, for which the Faber-Jackson relation suggests a strong positive correlation between mass and radius. Objects that are somewhat in between globular clusters and low-mass galaxies, such as ultra-compact dwarf galaxies, have a mass-radius relation consistent with the extension of the relation for bright ellipticals. Here we show that at an age of 10 Gyr a break in the mass-radius relation at ~10^6 Msun is established because objects below this mass, i…
Here we present positions and radial velocities for over 4000 globular clusters (GCs) in 27 nearby early-type galaxies from the SLUGGS survey. The SLUGGS survey is designed to be representative of elliptical and lenticular galaxies in the stellar mass range 10 $<$ log M$_{\ast}$/M$_{\odot}$ $<$ 11.7. The data have been obtained over many years, mostly using the very stable multi-object spectrograph DEIMOS on the Keck II 10m telescope. Radial velocities are measured using the calcium triplet lines with a velocity accuracy of $\pm$ 10-15 km/s. We use phase space diagrams (i.e. velocity--position…
We use data from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral-field spectroscopy (SAMI) Galaxy Survey to study the dynamical scaling relation between galaxy stellar mass $M_*$ and the general kinematic parameter $S_K = \sqrt{K V_{rot}^2 + σ^2}$ that combines rotation velocity $V_{rot}$ and velocity dispersion $σ$. We show that the $\log M_* - \log S_K$ relation: (1)~is linear above limits set by properties of the samples and observations; (2)~has slightly different slope when derived from stellar or gas kinematic measurements; (3)~applies to both early-type and late-type galaxies and has smaller scatt…
We study the link between baryons and dark matter in 240 galaxies with spatially resolved kinematic data. Our sample spans 9 dex in stellar mass and includes all morphological types. We consider (i) 153 late-type galaxies (LTGs; spirals and irregulars) with gas rotation curves from the SPARC database; (ii) 25 early-type galaxies (ETGs; ellipticals and lenticulars) with stellar and HI data from ATLAS^3D or X-ray data from Chandra; and (iii) 62 dwarf spheroidals (dSphs) with individual-star spectroscopy. We find that LTGs, ETGs, and "classical" dSphs follow the same radial acceleration relation:…
We present a detailed diagnostic study of the observed temperatures of the hot X-ray coronae of early-type galaxies. By extending the investigation carried out in Pellegrini (2011) with spherical models, we focus on the dependence of the energy budget and temperature of the hot gas on the galaxy structure and internal stellar kinematics. By solving the Jeans equations we construct realistic axisymmetric three-component galaxy models (stars, dark matter halo, central black hole) with different degrees of flattening and rotational support. The kinematical fields are projected along different lin…
In the pursuit of a general formulation for a modified gravitational theory at the non-relativistic level and as an alternative to the dark matter hypothesis, we construct a model valid over a wide variety of astrophysical scales. Through the inclusion of Milgrom's acceleration constant into a gravitational theory, we show that very general formulas can be constructed for the acceleration felt by a particle. Dimensional analysis shows that this inclusion naturally leads to the appearance of a mass-length scale in gravity, breaking its scale invariance. A particular form of the modified gravita…
We used ionized gas and stellar kinematics for 667 spatially resolved galaxies publicly available from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey (CALIFA) 3rd Data Release with the aim of studying kinematic scaling relations as the Tully $\&$ Fisher (TF) relation using rotation velocity, $V_{rot}$, the Faber $\&$ Jackson (FJ) relation using velocity dispersion, $σ$, and also a combination of $V_{rot}$ and $σ$ through the $S_{K}$ parameter defined as $S_{K}^2 = KV_{rot}^2 + σ^2$ with constant $K$. Late-type and early-type galaxies reproduce the TF and FJ relations. Some early-type galaxie…
Context. The Fundamental Plane (FP) relation and the distribution of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the FP projections, cannot be easily explained in the hierarchical framework, where galaxies grow up by merging and star formation episodes. Aims. We want to show here that both the FP and its projections arise naturally from the combination of the Virial Theorem (VT) and a new time-dependent relation, describing how luminosity and stellar velocity dispersion change during galaxy evolution. This relation has the form of the Faber-Jackson (FJ) relation but a different physical meaning: the new rel…
About 20% of low-redshift galaxies are late-type spirals with a small or no bulge component. Although they are the simplest disk galaxies in terms of structure and dynamics, the role of the different physical processes driving their formation and evolution is not yet fully understood. We investigated whether small bulges of late-type spirals follow the same scaling relations traced by ellipticals and large bulges and if they are disk-like or classical bulges. We derived the photometric and kinematic properties of 9 nearby late-type spirals. To this aim, we analyzed the surface brightness distr…
Velocity dispersion ($σ$) is a key driver for galaxy structure and evolution. We here present a comprehensive semi-empirical approach to compute $σ$ via detailed Jeans modelling assuming both a constant and scale-dependent mass-to-light ratio $M^*/L$. We compare with a large sample of local galaxies from MaNGA and find that both models can reproduce the Faber-Jackson (FJ) relation and the weak dependence of $σ$ on bulge-to-total ratio $B/T$ (for $B/T\gtrsim 0.25$). The dynamical-to-stellar mass ratio within $R\lesssim R_e$ can be fully accounted for by a gradient in $M^*/L$. We then build velo…
We present a comparison of the observed, spatially integrated stellar and ionized gas velocity dispersions of $\sim1000$ massive ($\log M_{\star}/M_{\odot}\gtrsim\,10.3$) galaxies in the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) survey at $0.6\lesssim\,z\lesssim1.0$. The high $S/N\sim20{\rmÅ^{-1}}$ afforded by 20 hour VLT/VIMOS spectra allows for joint modeling of the stellar continuum and emission lines in all galaxies, spanning the full range of galaxy colors and morphologies. These observed integrated velocity dispersions (denoted as $σ'_{g, int}$ and $σ'_{\star, int}$) are related to…
We present RCSED, the value-added Reference Catalog of Spectral Energy Distributions of galaxies, which contains homogenized spectrophotometric data for 800,299 low and intermediate redshift galaxies (0.007<z<0.6) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic sample. Accessible from the Virtual Observatory (VO) and complemented with detailed information on galaxy properties obtained with the state-of-the-art data analysis, RCSED enables direct studies of galaxy formation and evolution during the last 5Gyr. We provide tabulated color transformations for galaxies of different morpholo…
We have observed 433 z<=0.08 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a full-sky survey of Abell clusters. The BCG Hubble diagram is consistent to within 2% of a Omega_m=0.3, Lambda=0.7 Hubble relation. The L_m-alpha relation for BCGs, which uses alpha, the log-slope of the BCG photometric curve of growth, to predict metric luminosity, L_m, has 0.27 mag residuals. We measure central stellar velocity dispersions, sigma, of the BCGs, finding the Faber-Jackson relation to flatten as the metric aperture grows to include an increasing fraction of the total BCG luminosity. A 3-parameter "metric plane" r…
