Starting from the amplitude with an arbitrary number of massless closed states of the bosonic string, we compute the soft limit when one of the states becomes soft to subsubleading order in the soft momentum expansion, and we show that when the soft state is a graviton or a dilaton, the full string amplitude can be expressed as a soft theorem through subsubleading order. It turns out that there are string corrections to the field theoretical limit in the case of a soft graviton, while for a soft dilaton the string corrections vanish. We then show that the new soft theorems, including the string corrections, can be simply obtained from the exchange diagrams where the soft state is attached to the other external states through the three-point string vertex of three massless states. In the soft-limit, the propagator of the exchanged state is divergent, and at tree-level these are the only divergent contributions to the full amplitude. However, they do not form a gauge invariant subset and must be supplemented with extra non-singular terms. The requirement of gauge invariance then fixes the complete amplitude through subsubleading order in the soft expansion, reproducing exactly what one gets from the explicit calculation in string theory. From this it is seen that the string corrections at subsubleading order arise as a consequence of the three-point amplitude having string corrections in the bosonic string. When specialized to a soft dilaton, it remarkably turns out that the string corrections vanish and that the non-singular piece of the subsubleading term of the dilaton soft theorem is the generator of space-time special conformal transformation.
In arXiv:2008.04330 it was shown that supertranslation and $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra symmetries, corresponding to leading and subleading soft graviton theorems, are enough to determine the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes. In this note we clarify the role of subsubleading soft graviton theorem in this context.
We study the soft behavior of two seemingly different particles that are both referred to as dilatons in the literature, namely the one that appears in theories of gravity and in string theory and the Nambu-Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken conformal invariance. Our primary result is the discovery of a soft theorem at subsubleading order for each dilaton, which in both cases contains the operator of special conformal transformations. Interesting similarities as well as differences between the dilaton soft theorems are discussed.
We consider the tree-level scattering amplitudes in the NS-NS (Neveu-Schwarz) massless sector of closed superstrings in the case where one external state becomes soft. We compute the amplitudes generically for any number of dimensions and any number and kind of the massless closed states through the subsubleading order in the soft expansion. We show that, when the soft state is a graviton or a dilaton, the full result can be expressed as a soft theorem factorizing the amplitude in a soft and a hard part. This behavior is similar to what has previously been observed in field theory and in the b…
Extensions of the photon and graviton soft theorems are derived in 4d local effective field theories with massless particles of arbitrary spin. We prove that effective operators can result in new terms in the soft theorems at subleading order for photons and subsubleading order for gravitons. The new soft terms are unique and we provide a complete classification of all local operators responsible for such modifications. We show that no local operators can modify the subleading soft graviton theorem. The soft limits are taken in a manifestly on-locus manner using a complex double deformation of…
In this paper we continue our study of the tree level MHV graviton scattering amplitudes from the point of view of celestial holography. In arXiv:2008.04330 we showed that the celestial OPE of two gravitons in the MHV sector can be written as a linear combination of $\overline{SL(2,\mathbb C)}$ current algebra and supertranslation descendants. In this note we show that the OPE is in fact manifestly invariant under the infinite dimensional Virasoro algebra as is expected for a $2$-D CFT. This is consistent with the conjecture that the holographic dual in $4$-D asymptotically flat space time is …
We present a class of graviton-dilaton models in which a homogeneous isotropic universe, such as our observed one, evolves with no singularity at any time. Such models may stand on their own as interesting models for singularity free cosmology, and may be studied further accordingly. They may also arise from string theory. We discuss critically a few such possibilities.
We study the behavior of the scattering amplitudes of the bosonic string involving a soft massless state (graviton, dilaton and Kalb-Ramond antisymmetric tensor) and closed string tachyons or other closed string massless states. For a soft graviton we confirm the results, obtained in Ref. [24] using just gauge invariance, up to terms of ${\cal O}(q^1)$ for external tachyons and up to terms of ${\cal O} (q^0)$ for external massless closed string states. Furthermore, we also derive the behavior of the scattering amplitude when a dilaton or a Kalb-Ramond field becomes soft. These results are new …
We construct, in the closed bosonic string, the multiloop amplitude involving $N$ tachyons and one massless particle with $26 -D$ compactified directions, and we show that at least for $D>4$, the soft behaviors of the graviton and dilaton satisfy the same soft theorems as at the tree level, up to one additional term at the subsubleading order, which can only contribute to the dilaton soft behavior and which we show is zero at least at one loop. This is possible, since the infrared divergences due to the non-vanishing tachyon and dilaton tadpoles do not depend on the number of external particle…
In theories of Einstein gravity coupled with a dilaton and a two-form, a soft theorem for the two-form, known as the Kalb-Ramond B-field, has so far been missing. In this work we fill the gap, and in turn formulate a unified soft theorem valid for gravitons, dilatons and B-fields in any tree-level scattering amplitude involving the three massless states. The new soft theorem is fixed by means of on-shell gauge invariance and enters at the subleading order of the graviton's soft theorem. In contrast to the subsubleading soft behavior of gravitons and dilatons, we show that the soft behavior of …
We present a class of graviton-dilaton models which leads to a singularity free evolution of the universe. We study the evolution of a homogeneous isotropic universe. We follow an approach which enables us to analyse the evolution and obtain its generic features even in the absence of explicit solutions, which are not possible in general. We describe the generic evolution of the universe and show, in particular, that it is singularity free in the present class of models. Such models may stand on their own as interesting models for singularity free cosmology, and may be studied accordingly. The…
We address solutions of brane-world with cosmological constant $λ$ by introducing the dilaton in 5d bulk, and we examine the localization of graviton, gauge bosons and dilaton. For those solutions, we find that both graviton and gauge bosons can be trapped for either sign, positive or negative, and wide range of $λ$ due to the non-trivial dilaton. While the dilaton can not be trapped on the brane.
Classical subleading soft graviton theorem in four space-time dimensions determines the gravitational wave-form at late and early retarded time, generated during a scattering or explosion, in terms of the four momenta of the ingoing and outgoing objects. This result was `derived' earlier by taking the classical limit of the quantum soft graviton theorem, and making some assumptions about how to deal with the infrared divergences of the soft factor. In this paper we give a direct proof of this result by analyzing the classical equations of motion of gravity coupled to matter. We also extend the…
We prove that soft theorems uniquely fix scattering amplitudes in a wide range of theories, including Yang-Mills, gravity, the non-linear sigma model, Dirac-Born-Infeld, dilaton effective theories, extended theories like NLSM$\oplus ϕ^3$ or BI$\oplus$YM, as well as some higher derivative corrections to these theories. We conjecture the same is true even when imposing more general soft behavior, simply by assuming the existence of soft operators, or by imposing gauge invariance/the Adler zero only up to a finite order in soft expansions. Besides reproducing known amplitudes, this analysis revea…
In this article we construct a tiny graviton matrix model for type IIB string theory on a plane-wave background with null dilaton. For the linear null dilaton case, we analyze its vacuum and the excitation spectrum around the vacuum, and discuss the time-dependent fuzzy three-sphere solutions and their evolution. It turns out that at very late time the non-Abelian fuzzy degrees of freedom disappear, which indicates the appearance of perturbative strings.
I discuss the scattering of a graviton (or a dilaton, or an anti-symmetric tensor) on two parallel static Dp-branes. The graviton belongs to a type II string in 10D.
It has been speculated that the S-matrix elements of type IIB superstring theory satisfy the Ward identity associated with the S-duality. This indicates that a group of S-matrix elements at each loop level are invariant under the linear $SL(2,R)$ transformations. If one evaluates one element of such S-dual multiplet, then all other components can be found by the simple use of the linear $SL(2,R)$ transformations. In this paper, we calculate the disk-level S-matrix element of one graviton(dilaton), one B-field and one gauge boson on the word volume of D$_3$-brane. The S-dual multiplet correspon…
We show that the mixed gravitational/gauge superstring amplitudes describing decays of massless closed strings - gravitons or dilatons - into a number of gauge bosons, can be written at the tree (disk) level as linear combinations of pure open string amplitudes in which the graviton (or dilaton) is replaced by a pair of collinear gauge bosons. Each of the constituent gauge bosons carry exactly one half of the original closed string momentum, while their +/- 1 helicities add up to +/- 2 for the graviton or to 0 for the dilaton.
By solving the Einstein equations of the graviton coupling with a real scalar dilaton field, we establish a general framework to self-consistently solve the geometric background with black-hole for any given phenomenological holographic models. In this framwork, we solve the black-hole background, the corresponding dilaon field and the dilaton potential for the deformed AdS$_5$ model with a positive/negative quadratic correction. We systematically investigate the thermodynamical properties of the deformed AdS$_5$ model with a positive and negative quadratic correction, respectively, and compar…
We consider holographic renormalization for the decoupling limit of coincident Dp-branes. We truncate the theory to the supergravity sector which is homogeneous on the (8-p)-sphere and carries only RR electric (p+2)-flux, leaving a graviton and two scalar degrees of freedom associated to the dilaton and the sphere radius. We non-linearly construct the asymptotic graviton and dilaton deformations - the analog of the Graham-Fefferman expansion for AdS/CFT - and compute counterterms to give a finite renormalized bulk action and dual one point functions. Restricting to linear deformations we find …

In this work, we offer a dynamical soft-wall model to describe the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics in one systematical framework. We firstly construct a quenched dynamical holographic QCD (hQCD) model in the graviton-dilaton framework for the pure gluon system, then develop a dynamical hQCD model for the two flavor system in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework by adding light flavors on the gluodynamical background. For two forms of dilaton background field $Φ=μ_G^2z^2$ and $Φ=μ_G^2z^2\tanh(μ_{G^2}^4z^2/μ_G^2)$, the quadratic correction to dilaton background field at infrared encodes import…
The graviton exchange diagram for the correlation function of arbitrary scalar operators is evaluated in anti-de Sitter space, AdS(d+1). This enables us to complete the computation of the 4-point amplitudes of dilaton and axion fields in IIB supergravity on AdS5 X S5. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, we obtain the 4-point functions of the marginal operators Tr (F^2+...) and Tr(F F~ +...) in N=4, d=4 SU(N) SYM at large N, large g^2 N. The short distance asymptotics of the amplitudes are studied. We find that in the direct channel the leading power singularity agrees with the expected contribution…
We study the effective physics of F-theory at order $α'^3$ in derivative expansion. We show that the ten-dimensional type IIB eight-derivative couplings involving the graviton and the axio-dilaton naturally descend from pure gravity in twelve dimensions. Upon compactification on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds, the non-trivial vacuum profile for the axio-dilaton leads to a new, genuinely N=1, $α'^3$ correction to the four-dimensional effective action.
We consider the setup of an evaporating black hole in AdS$_{4}$ coupled to an external bath, embedded in type IIB string theory. We study quantum extremal islands in these backgrounds, in relation to the existence of a massive graviton. Using explicit results of the microscopic embedding of AdS$_{4}$ massive gravity in string theory, we investigate whether it is possible to achieve backgrounds with extremal islands, in which the lowest lying graviton is only slightly massive. For certain regions of the microscopic parameters, the graviton mass can be computed explicitly, and we explain how it …
Applying a novel non-perturbative functional method framework to a two-dimensional bosonic sigma model with tachyon, dilaton and graviton backgrounds we construct exact (non perturbative in the Regge slope) inflationary solutions, consistent with world-sheet Weyl Invariance. The mechanism for inflation entails a (partial) "alignment" between tachyon and dilaton backgrounds in the solution space. Some cosmological solutions which contain inflationary eras for a short period and interpolate between flat universes in the far past and far future are also discussed. These solutions are characterize…
Highly supercritical strings (c much greater than 15) with a time-like linear dilaton provide a large class of solutions to string theory, in which closed string tachyon condensation is under control (and follows the worldsheet renormalization group flow). In this note we analyze the late-time stability of such backgrounds, including transitions between them. The large friction introduced by the rolling dilaton and the rapid decrease of the string coupling suppress the back-reaction of naive instabilities. In particular, although the graviton, dilaton, and other light fields have negative effe…
We discuss fluctuations on solitons in the dilaton/graviton/tachyon system using the low energy effective field theory approach. It is shown that closed string solitons are free of tachyons in this approximation, regardless of the exact shape of the tachyon potential.
We calculate the simultaneous double-soft limit of two massless closed strings scattering with any number of closed string tachyons to the subleading order at the tree level. The limit factorizes the scattering amplitude into a double-soft factor multiplying the pure tachyon subamplitude, suggesting a universal double-soft theorem for the massless closed string. We confirm an existing result for the double-soft graviton in an on-shell equivalent, but different form, while also establishing the double-soft factorization behavior of the string dilaton and of the Kalb-Ramond state, as well as the…
The Riemann curvature correction to the type II supergravity at eight-derivative level is given schematically as $(t_8t_8+{1}{8}\eps_{10}\eps_{10})R^4$ at tree-level. The replacement of the generalized Riemann curvature in $t_8t_8R^4$, proposed by Gross and Sloan, produces various NS-NS couplings which are invariant under T-duality. Recently, using the combination of S-duality and T-duality transformations on these couplings, we have found groups of couplings which are invariant under the S-duality transformation. In this paper, we have examined the couplings involving the dilaton with direct …
We present new relations for scattering amplitudes of color ordered gluons and gravitons in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. Tree-level amplitudes of arbitrary multiplicities and polarizations involving up to three gravitons and up to two color traces are reduced to partial amplitudes of pure Yang-Mills theory. In fact, the double-trace identities apply to Einstein-Yang-Mills extended by a dilaton and a B-field. Our results generalize recent work of Stieberger and Taylor for the single graviton case with a single color trace. As the derivation is made in the dimension-agnostic Cachazo-He-Yuan forma…
We discuss classical solutions of a graviton-dilaton-B_{μν}-tachyon system. Both constant tachyon solutions, including AdS_3 solutions, and space-dependent tachyon solutions are investigated, and their possible implications to closed string tachyon condensation are argued. The stability issue of the AdS_3 solutions is also discussed.
Resembling the renormalization group from ultraviolet to infrared, we construct a dynamical holographic model in the graviton-dilaton-scalar framework, where the dilaton background field $Φ$ and scalar field $X$ are responsible for the gluodynamics and chiral dynamics, respectively. At the UV boundary, the dilaton field is dual to the dimension-4 gluon operator, and the scalar field is dual to the dimension-3 quark-antiquark operator. The metric structure at IR is automatically deformed by the nonperturbative gluon condensation and chiral condensation in the vacuum. The produced scalar gluebal…
We study small fluctuations of the stringy wormhole solutions of graviton-dilaton-axion system in arbitrary dimensions. We show under O($d$)-symmetric harmonic perturbation that the Euclidean wormhole solutions are unstable in flat space irrespective of dimensions and in anti de Sitter space of $d=3$.
We compute the leading-order back-reaction to dilaton-driven inflation, due to graviton, dilaton and gauge-boson production. The one-loop effect turns out to be non-vanishing (unlike the case for pure de-Sitter and for power-law inflation), to be of relative order $\ell_P^2H^2(t)$, and to have the correct sign for favouring the exit to a FRW phase.
We extend a previous analysis of flavor-changing fermion-graviton vertices, by adding the one-loop SM corrections to the flavor diagonal fermion-graviton interactions. Explicit analytical expressions taking into account fermion masses for the on-shell form factors are computed and presented. The infrared safety of the fermion-graviton vertices against radiative corrections of soft photons and gluons is proved, by extending the ordinary infrared cancellation mechanism between real and virtual emissions to the gravity case. These results can be easily generalized to fermion couplings with massiv…
All positive helicity four-point gluon-graviton amplitudes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory coupled to a dilaton and axion field are computed at the leading one-loop order using colour-kinematics duality. In particular, all relevant contributions in the gravitational and gauge coupling are established. This extends a previous generalized unitarity based computation beyond the leading terms in the gravitational coupling $κ$. The resulting purely rational expressions take very compact forms. The previously seen vanishing of the single-graviton-three-gluon amplitude at leading order in $κ$ is seen t…
In this note we show that by fixing the multiloop Green function in the closed bosonic string to be Arakelov's Green function, one obtains factorization of scattering amplitudes with a softly emitted dilaton to the same level as with a graviton to all loop order. This extends our previous analysis at one loop to all loop orders and confirms that some high-energy quantum symmetry in the bosonic string protects the factorization of amplitudes with softly emitted dilatons.
Classical limit of multiple soft graviton theorem can be used to compute the angular power spectrum of long wavelength gravitational radiation in classical scattering provided the total energy carried away by the radiation is small compared to the energies of the scatterers. We could ensure this either by taking the limit in which the impact parameter is large compared to the Schwarzschild radii of the scatterers, or by taking the probe limit where one object (the probe) has mass much smaller than the other object (the scatterer). We compute the results to subsubleading order in soft momentum …
We investigate some aspects of the spectrum of D-branes and their interactions with closed strings. As argued earlier, a collection of many D-strings behaves, at large dilaton values, as a single multiply wound string. We use this result and T-duality transformations to show that a similar phenomenon occurs for effective strings produced by wrapping p-branes on a small (p-1)-dimensional torus, for suitable coupling. To understand the decay of an excited D-string at large dilaton values, we study the decay of an elementary string at small dilaton values. A long string, multiply wound on a circl…
We study the graviton phenomenology of TeV Little String Theory by exploiting its holographic gravity dual five-dimensional theory. This dual corresponds to a linear dilaton background with a large bulk that constrains the Standard Model fields on the boundary of space. The linear dilaton geometry produces a unique Kaluza-Klein graviton spectrum that exhibits a ~ TeV mass gap followed by a near continuum of narrow resonances that are separated from each other by only ~ 30 GeV. Resonant production of these particles at the LHC is the signature of this framework that distinguishes it from large …
Soft behaviour of closed string amplitudes involving dilatons, gravitons and anti-symmetric tensors, is studied in the framework of bosonic string theory. The leading double soft limit of gluons is analysed as well, starting from scattering amplitudes computed in the open bosonic string. Field theory expressions are then obtained by sending the string tension to infinity. The presented results have been derived in the papers of Ref.[1].
The strongly coupled limit of string scattering and the automorphic construction of the graviton S-matrix is compared with the eleven dimensional formulation of M-theory. In a particular scaling limit at strong string coupling, M-theory is described by eleven-dimensional supergravity which does not possess a dilaton, but rather a perturbative expansion in the gravitational coupling and derivatives. The latter theory provides an off-shell description of the string, upon dimensional reduction.

We argue that the scattering of gravitons in ordinary Einstein gravity possesses a hidden conformal symmetry at tree level in any number of dimensions. The presence of this conformal symmetry is indicated by the dilaton soft theorem in string theory, and it is reminiscent of the conformal invariance of gluon tree-level amplitudes in four dimensions. To motivate the underlying prescription, we demonstrate that formulating the conformal symmetry of gluon amplitudes in terms of momenta and polarization vectors requires manifest reversal and cyclic symmetry. Similarly, our formulation of the confo…
