Element abundances in high-redshift quasar absorbers offer excellent probes of the chemical enrichment of distant galaxies, and can constrain models for population III and early population II stars. Recent observations indicate that the sub-damped Lyman-alpha (sub-DLA) absorbers are more metal-rich than DLA absorbers at redshifts 0$<$$z$$<$3. It has also been suggested that the DLA metallicity drops suddenly at $z$$>$4.7. However, only 3 DLAs at $z$$>$4.5 and none at $z$$>$3.5 have "dust-free" metallicity measurements of undepleted elements. We report the first quasar sub-DLA metallicity measurement at $z$$>$3.5, from detections of undepleted elements in high-resolution data for a sub-DLA at $z$=5.0. We obtain fairly robust abundances of C, O, Si, and Fe, using lines outside the Lyman-alpha forest. This absorber is metal-poor, with O/H]=-2.00$\pm$0.12, which is $\gtrsim$4$σ$ below the level expected from extrapolation of the trend for $z$$<$3.5 sub-DLAs. The C/O ratio is 1.8$^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ times lower than in the Sun. More strikingly, Si/O is 3.2$^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ times lower than in the Sun, while Si/Fe is nearly (1.2$^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ times) solar. This absorber does not display a clear alpha/Fe enhancement. Dust depletion may have removed more Si from the gas phase than is common in the Milky Way interstellar medium, which may be expected if high-redshift supernovae form more silicate-rich dust. C/O and Si/O vary substantially between different velocity components, indicating spatial variations in dust depletion and/or early stellar nucleosynethesis (e.g., population III star initial mass function). The higher velocity gas may trace an outflow enriched by early stars.
In the complex picture of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters (GCs), a special role is played by NGC 5139 Omega Centauri. At variance with the majority of GCs, Omega Cen exhibits significant star-to-star variations in metallicity and in relative neutron-capture element abundance ratios with respect to Fe, along with split evolutionary sequences as revealed from colour-magnitude diagrams. Combining information from photometry and spectroscopy, several studies suggested that an age spread of several Gyr has to be invoked to explain (at least partially) some of the observed features…
Chemical abundances of stars in the Milky Way disk are empirical tracers of its enrichment history. However, they capture joint-information that is valuable to disentangle. In this work, we seek to quantify how individual abundances evolve across the present-day radius of the disk, at fixed supernovae contribution ([Fe/H], [Mg/Fe]). We use 18,135 APOGEE DR17 red clump stars and 7,943 GALAH DR3 main sequence stars to compare the abundance distributions conditioned on ([Fe/H], [Mg/Fe]) across $3-13$ kpc and $6.5-9.5$ kpc, respectively. In total we examine 15 elements: C, N, Al, K (light), O, Si,…
We acquired spectra of 141 HII regions in ten late-type low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs). The analysis of the chemical abundances obtained from the nebular emission lines shows that metallicity gradients are a common feature of LSBGs, contrary to previous claims concerning the absence of such gradients in this class of galaxies. The average slope, when expressed in units of the isophotal radius, is found to be significantly shallower in comparison to galaxies of high surface brightness. This result can be attributed to the reduced surface brightness range measured across their discs, wh…

Optical integral field spectroscopy of the archetype protoplanetary disk LV2 in the Orion Nebula is presented, taken with the VLT FLAMES/Argus fibre array. The detection of recombination lines of CII and OII from this class of objects is reported, and the lines are utilized as abundance diagnostics. The study is complemented with the analysis of HST Faint Object Spectrograph ultraviolet and optical spectra of the target contained within the Argus field of view. By subtracting the local nebula background the intrinsic spectrum of the proplyd is obtained and its elemental composition is derived …
Large-scale homogeneous surveys of Galactic stars may indicate that the elemental abundance gradient evolves with cosmic time, a phenomenon that was not foreseen in existing models of Galactic chemical evolution (GCE). If the phenomenon is confirmed in future studies, we show that this effect, at least in part, is due to large-scale winds that once enriched the disk. These set up the steep abundance gradient in the inner disk (R <14 kpc). At the close of the wind phase, chemical enrichment through accretion of metal-poor material from the halo onto the disk gradually reduced the metallicity of…
We discuss the characteristics of known extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars in the Galaxy using the Stellar Abundances for Galactic Archaeology (SAGA) database (Suda et al. 2008, PASJ, 60, 1159).The analyses of carbon-enhanced stars in our sample suggest that the nucleosynthesis in AGB stars can contribute to the carbon enrichment in a different way depending on whether the metallicity is above or below [Fe/H] ~ -2.5, which is consistent with the current models of stellar evolution at low metallicity. We find the transition of the initial mass function at [Fe/H] ~ -2 in the viewpoint of the distr…
We use oxygen and argon abundances for planetary nebulae (PNe) with low internal extinction (progenitor ages of (>4.5 Gyr) and high extinction (progenitor ages <2.5 Gyr), as well as those of the H II regions, to constrain the chemical enrichment and star formation efficiency in the thin and thicker discs of M31. The argon element is produced in larger fraction by Type Ia supernovae (SNe) than oxygen. We find that the mean log(O/Ar) values of PNe as a function of their argon abundances, 12 + log(Ar/H), trace the inter-stellar matter (ISM) conditions at the time of birth of the M 31 disc PN prog…
Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are often conjectured to be the sites of the first stars. The best current contenders for finding the chemical imprints from the enrichment by those massive objects are the "ultrafaint dwarfs" (UFDs). Here we present evidence for remarkably low heavy element abundances in the metal poor Hercules UFD. Combined with other peculiar abundance patterns this indicates that Hercules was likely only influenced by very few, massive explosive events - thus bearing the traces of an early, localized chemical enrichment with only very little other contributions from other sources …
I briefly review what has been recently learned from determinations of mean stellar ages and abundances from integrated light studies of early-type galaxies, and discuss some new questions posed by recent data. A short discussion of spectroscopic ages is presented, but the main focus of this review is on the abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, N, and C, obtained from comparisons of measurements taken in integrated spectra of galaxies with predictions from stellar population synthesis models.

The comparison of chemical abundances in the neutral gas of galaxies to photospheric abundances of old and young stars, ionized gas abundances, and abundances in galactic halos can trace the chemical enrichment of the universe through cosmic times. In particular, our understanding of chemical enrichment through spectroscopic observations of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) relies on corrections for depletion of metals from the gas to the dust phase. These corrections must be determined in the nearby universe, where both gas-phase abundances and photospheric abundances of young stars recently …
Type Ia supernovae (Ia SNe) provide a rich source of iron for hot gas in galactic stellar spheroids. However, the expected super-solar iron abundance of the hot gas is not observed. Instead, X-ray observations often show decreasing iron abundance toward galactic central regions, where the Ia SN enrichment is expected to be the highest. We examine the cause of this missing iron problem by studying the enrichment process and its effect on X-ray abundance measurements of the hot gas. The evolution of Ia SN iron ejecta is simulated in the context of galaxy-wide hot gas outflows, in both supersonic…
We tested the implementation of different IMFs in our model for the chemical evolution of ellipticals, with the aim of reproducing the observed relations of [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] abundances with galaxy mass in a sample of early-type galaxies selected from the SPIDER-SDSS catalog. Abundances in the catalog were derived from averaged spectra, obtained by stacking individual spectra according to central velocity dispersion, as a proxy of galaxy mass. We tested initial mass functions already used in a previous work, as well as two new models, based on low-mass tapered ("bimodal") IMFs, where the IMF …
We present elemental abundances and stellar population ages for 68 massive quiescent galaxies at $0.59\leq z\leq0.75$ from the LEGA-C survey. The abundance patterns and ages, derived from full-spectrum modeling, are examined as a function of stellar mass ($M_*$) and size (i.e., half-light radius; $R_e$). We find that both [Mg/H] and [Fe/H] do not vary with stellar mass but are correlated with $M_*/R_e$ for quiescent galaxies with $M_*>10^{10.5} M_\odot$. Thus, at fixed mass, compact quiescent galaxies are on average more metal rich. This result reinforces the picture that supernova feedback an…
The distribution of gas-phase abundances in galaxy disks encodes the history of nucleosynthesis and transport through the interstellar medium (ISM) over cosmic time. Multi-object and high resolution integral-field spectroscopy have started to measure these distributions across hundreds of HII regions individually resolved at $\lesssim 100$ pc scales in a handful of objects, but in the coming decade these studies will expand to larger samples of galaxies. This will allow us to understand the role of feedback and turbulence in driving the mixing and diffusion of metals in the ISM, and statistica…
We present a double-blind analysis of high-dispersion spectra of seven red giant members of the Boötes I ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxy, complemented with re-analysis of a similar spectrum of an eighth member star. The stars cover [Fe/H] from -3.7 to -1.9, and include a CEMP-no star with [Fe/H] = -3.33. We conclude from our chemical abundance data that Boötes I has evolved as a self-enriching star-forming system, from essentially primordial initial abundances. This allows us uniquely to investigate the place of CEMP-no stars in a chemically evolving system, in addition to limiting the tim…
We searched for trails to understand the different Na abundances measured in first and second generation stars of ancient Milky Way globular clusters. For that purpose, we gathered from the recent literature the aforementioned Na abundances, orbital parameters, structural and internal dynamical properties and ages in an homogeneous scale of 28 globular clusters. We found that the intra-cluster Na enrichment, measured by the difference of Na abundances between first and second generation stars, exhibits a trend as a function of the Na abundances of first generation stars, in the sense that the …
Spiral arms are the most characteristic features of disc galaxies, easily distinguishable due to their association with ongoing star formation. However, the role of spiral structure in the chemical evolution of galaxies is unclear. Here we explore gas-phase abundance variations between arm and interarm regions for a sample of 45 spiral galaxies using high spatial resolution VLT/MUSE Integral Field Spectroscopy data. We report the presence of more metal-rich HII regions in the spiral arms with respect to the corresponding interarm regions for a large subsample of galaxies ($45-65\%$ depending o…
We study the enrichment histories for nine elements, C, four alpha-elements of Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti, Sc, and three iron-peak elements of Co, Ni, and Zn, by using a large number of stellar data, collected by the Stellar Abundances for Galactic Archaeology (SAGA) database. We find statistically significant changes, or breaks, of the mean abundance ratios to iron at three metallicities of [Fe/H]-1.8, -2.2, and -3.3. Across the first one, the mean abundance ratios decrease with the metallicity by similar extents for all the elements with the sufficient data. Across the latter two, downward trends wi…
We have studied the chemical enrichment history of the interstellar medium through an analysis of the n-dimensional stellar abundances space. This work is a non-parametric analysis of the stellar chemical abundance space. The main goal is to study the stars from their organization within this abundance space. Within this space, we seek to find clusters (in a statistical sense), that is, stars likely to share similar chemo-evolutionary history, using two methods: the hierarchical clustering and the principal component analysis. We analysed some selected abundance surveys available in the litera…

We present an update to the chemical enrichment component of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics model for galaxy formation presented in Scannapieco et al. (2005) in order to address the needs of modelling galactic chemical evolution in realistic cosmological environments. Attribution of the galaxy-scale abundance patterns to individual enrichment mechanisms such as the winds from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars or the presence of a prompt fraction of Type Ia supernovae is complicated by the interaction between them and gas cooling, subsequent star formation and gas ejection. In this work …
The enrichment history of heavy neutron-capture elements in the Milky Way disc provides fundamental information about the chemical evolution of our Galaxy and about the stellar sources that made those elements. In this work we give new observational data for Sr, the element at the first neutron-shell closure beyond iron, N=50, based on the analysis of the high resolution spectra of 276 Galactic disc stars. The Sr abundance was derived by comparing the observed and synthetic spectra in the region of the SrI 4607 A line, making use of the LTE approximation. NLTE corrections lead to an increase o…
One-zone models constructed to match observed stellar abundance patterns have been used extensively to constrain the sites of nucleosynthesis with sophisticated libraries of stellar evolution and stellar yields. The metal mixing included in these models is usually highly simplified, although it is likely to be a significant driver of abundance evolution. In this work we use high-resolution hydrodynamics simulations to investigate how metals from individual enrichment events with varying source energies $E_{\rm ej}$ mix throughout the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) of a low-mass ($M_{\rm…
Using high-resolution spectroscopy, we provide a determination of [Fe/H] and [Ca/H] for confirmed red-giant branch member stars of the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Based on this we explore the ages of the prevailing stellar populations in Hercules, and the enrichment history from supernovae. Additionally, we provide a new simple metallicity calibration for Stromgren photometry for metal-poor, red giant branch stars. We find that the red-giant branch stars of the Hercules dSph galaxy are more metal-poor than estimated in our previous study that was based on photometry alone. Additionally, …
Lithium abundance in most of the warm metal-poor main sequence stars shows a constant plateau (A(Li)~2.2 dex) and then the upper envelope of the lithium vs. metallicity distribution increases as we approach solar metallicity. Meteorites, which carry information about the chemical composition of the interstellar medium at the solar system formation time, show a lithium abundance A(Li)~3.26 dex. This pattern reflects the Li enrichment history of the interstellar medium during the Galaxy lifetime. After the initial Li production in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the sources of the enrichment include A…
The stellar record of elemental abundances in satellite galaxies is important to identify the origin of r-process because such a small stellar system could have hosted a single r-process event, which would distinguish member stars that are formed before and after the event through the evidence of a considerable difference in the abundances of r-process elements, as found in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Reticulum II (Ret II). However, the limited mass of these systems prevents us from collecting information from a sufficient number of stars in individual satellites. Hence, it remains unclear wh…
We present the discovery of a very hot gas phase of the Milky Way circumgalactic medium (CGM) at T $\approx 10^7$ K, using deep XMM-Newton RGS observations of 1ES 1553+113. The hot gas, coexisting with a warm-hot phase at T $\approx 10^6$ K is $α-$enhanced, with [O/Fe] = 0.9$^{+0.7}_{-0.3}$, indicating core-collapse supernovae enrichment. Additionally we find [Ne/O] and [N/O] = $0.7^{+1.6}_{-0.2}$, such that N/Ne is consistent with solar. Along with the enrichment by AGB stars and core-collapse supernovae, this indicates that some oxygen has depleted onto dust and/or transited to cooler gas ph…
We quantify the stellar abundances of neutron-rich r-process nuclei in cosmological zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way-mass galaxy from the Feedback In Realistic Environments project. The galaxy is enriched with r-process elements by binary neutron star (NS) mergers and with iron and other metals by supernovae. These calculations include key hydrodynamic mixing processes not present in standard semi-analytic chemical evolution models, such as galactic winds and hydrodynamic flows associated with structure formation. We explore a range of models for the rate and delay time of NS mergers, intend…
Here we aim to understand the origin of 47 Tuc's La-rich star Lee 4710. We report abundances for O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Eu, and present a detailed abundance analysis of two 47 Tuc stars with similar stellar parameters but different slow neutron-capture (s-)process enrichment. Star Lee 4710 has the highest known La abundance ratio in this cluster ([La/Fe] = 1.14), and star Lee 4626 is known to have normal s-process abundances (e.g., [Ba/Eu]$<0$). The nucleosynthetic pattern of elements with Z$\gtrsim$56 for star Lee 4710 agrees with the …
We present an AAOmega spectroscopic study of red giant stars in Bootes I, which is an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, and Segue 1, suggested to be either an extremely low-luminosity dwarf galaxy or a star cluster. Our focus is quantifying the mean abundance and abundance dispersion in iron and carbon, and searching for distant radial-velocity members, in these systems. The primary conclusion of our investigation is that the spread of carbon abundance in both Bootes I and Segue 1 is large. For Bootes I, 4 of our 16 velocity members have [C/H] < ~-3.1, while 2 have [C/H] > ~-2.3, suggesting a range of…
Observed chemical (anti)correlations in proton-capture elements among globular cluster stars are presently recognized as the signature of self-enrichment from now extinct, previous generations of stars. This defines the multiple population scenario. Since fluorine is also affected by proton captures, determining its abundance in globular clusters provides new and complementary clues regarding the nature of these previous generations, and supplies strong observational constraints to the chemical enrichment timescales. In this paper we present our results on near-infrared CRIRES spectroscopic ob…
We study the enrichment and mixing of r-process elements in ultrafaint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). We assume that r-process elements are produced by neutron-star mergers (NSMs), and examine multiple models with different natal kick velocities and explosion energies. To this end, we perform cosmological simulations of galaxy formation to follow mixing of the dispersed r-process elements driven by star formation and the associated stellar feedback in progenitors of UFDs. We show that the observed europium abundance in Reticulum II is reproduced by our inner explosion model where a NSM is triggered at…
A time delay of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosions hinders the imprint of their nucleosynthesis on stellar abundances. However, some occasional cases give birth to stars that avoid enrichment of their chemical compositions by massive stars and thereby exhibit a SN Ia-like elemental feature including a very low [Mg/Fe] (~-1). We highlight the elemental feature of Fe-group elements for two low-Mg/Fe objects detected in nearby galaxies, and propose the presence of a class of SNe Ia that yield the low abundance ratios of [Cr,Mn,Ni/Fe]. Our novel models of chemical evolution reveal that our propo…
Elements heavier than zinc are synthesized through the (r)apid and (s)low neutron-capture processes. The main site of production of the r-process elements (such as europium) has been debated for nearly 60 years. Initial studies of chemical abundance trends in old Milky Way halo stars suggested continual r-process production, in sites like core-collapse supernovae. But evidence from the local Universe favors r-process production mainly during rare events, such as neutron star mergers. The appearance of a europium abundance plateau in some dwarf spheroidal galaxies has been suggested as evidence…
X-ray measurements find systematically lower Fe abundances in the X-ray emitting haloes pervading groups ($kT\lesssim1.7$ keV) than in clusters of galaxies. These results have been difficult to reconcile with theoretical predictions. However, models using incomplete atomic data or the assumption of isothermal plasmas may have biased the best fit Fe abundance in groups and giant elliptical galaxies low. In this work, we take advantage of a major update of the atomic code in the spectral fitting package SPEX to re-evaluate the Fe abundance in 43 clusters, groups, and elliptical galaxies (the CHE…
A number of stellar sources have been advocated as the origin of the enriched material required to explain the abundance anomalies seen in ancient globular clusters (GCs). Most studies to date have compared the yields from potential sources (asymptotic giant branch stars (AGBs), fast rotating massive stars (FRMS), high mass interacting binaries (IBs), and very massive stars (VMS)) with observations of specific elements that are observed to vary from star-to-star in GCs, focussing on extreme GCs such as NGC 2808, which display large He variations. However, a consistency check between the result…
Differential enrichment between $α$- and Fe-peak elements is known to be strongly connected with the shape of the star formation history (SFH), the star formation efficiency (SFE), the inflow and outflow of material, and even the shape of the Initial Mass Function (IMF). However, beyond the Local Group detailed explorations are mostly limited to early-type galaxies due to the lack of a good proxy for [$α$/Fe] in late-type ones, limiting our understanding of the chemical enrichment process. We intent to extend the explorations of [$α$/Fe] to late-type galaxies, in order to understand the detail…
Aim: We establish the mean metallicity from high-resolution spectroscopy for the recently found dwarf spheroidal galaxy Bootes I and test whether it is a common feature for ultra-faint dwarf spheroidal galaxies to show signs of inhomogeneous chemical evolution (e.g. as found in the Hercules dwarf spheroidal galaxy). Methods: We analyse high-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise spectra for seven red giant stars in the Bootes I dSph galaxy using standard abundance analysis techniques. In particular, we assume local thermodynamic equilibrium and employ spherical model atmospheres and codes that t…
We investigate the origin of the abundance ratios and scatter of the neutron-capture elements Sr, Ba and Eu in the stellar halo of a Milky Way-mass galaxy formed in a hydrodynamical cosmological simulation, and compare them with those of $α$-elements. For this, we implement a novel treatment for chemical enrichment of Type II supernovae which considers the effects of the rotation of massive stars on the chemical yields and differential enrichment according to the life-times of progenitor stars. We find that differential enrichment has a significant impact on the early enrichment of the interst…
The Fermi bubbles are gigantic gamma-ray structures in our Galaxy. The physical origin of the bubbles is still under debate. The leading scenarios can be divided into two categories. One is the nuclear star forming activity similar to extragalactic starburst galaxies and the other is the past active galactic nucleus (AGN) like activity of the Galactic center supermassive black hole. In this paper, we propose that metal abundance measurements will provide an important clue to probe their origin. Based on a simple spherically symmetric bubble model, we find that the generated metallicity and abu…
Abundances of planetary nebulae and evolved stars: Iron and sulfur depletion, and carbon and nitrogen enrichment, in low- and intermediate-mass stellar populations in the Milky Way
Using a deep (574 ks) Chandra observation of M87, the dominant galaxy of the nearby Virgo Cluster, we present the best measurements to date of the radial distribution of metals in the central intracluster medium (ICM). Our measurements, made in 36 independent annuli with $\sim$250,000 counts each, extend out to a radius r$\sim$40 kpc and show that the abundance profiles of Fe, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Ne, Mg, and Ni are all centrally peaked. Interestingly, the abundance profiles of Si and S - which are measured robustly and to high precision - are even more centrally peaked than Fe, while the Si/S ratio…
We have obtained deep spectra of 26 planetary nebulae (PNe) and 9 compact HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 300, and analyzed them together with those of the giant HII regions previously observed. We have determined the physical properties of all these objects and their He, N, O, Ne, S and Ar abundances in a consistent way. We find that, globally, compact HII regions have abundance ratios similar to those of giant HII regions, while PNe have systematically larger N/O ratios and similar Ne/O and Ar/O ratios. We demonstrate that the nitrogen enhancement in PNe cannot be only due to sec…
We present abundance analyses based on high dispersion and high signal-to-noise ratio Magellan spectra of two highly microlensed Galactic bulge stars in the region of the main sequence turnoff with Teff ~ 5650 K. We find that MOA-2008-BLG310 has [Fe/H]= +0.41 (+,- 0.09 dex) and MOA-2008-BLG311 has +0.26 (+, - 0.09 dex). The abundance ratios for the ~20 elements for which features could be detected in the spectra of each of the two stars follow the trends with [Fe/H] found among samples of bulge giants. Combining these two bulge dwarfs with the results from previous abundance analysis of four o…

The hot intra-cluster medium (ICM) is rich in metals, which are synthesised by supernovae (SNe) and accumulate over time into the deep gravitational potential well of clusters of galaxies. Since most of the elements visible in X-rays are formed by type Ia (SNIa) and/or core-collapse (SNcc) supernovae, measuring their abundances gives us direct information on the nucleosynthesis products of billions of SNe since the epoch of the star formation peak (z~2-3). In this study, we compare the most accurate average X/Fe abundance ratios (compiled in a previous work from XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS observa…
ALMA is providing us essential information on where certain molecules form. Observing where these molecules emission arises from, the physical conditions of the gas, and how this relates with the presence of other species allows us to understand the formation of many species, and to significantly improve our knowledge of the chemistry that occurs in the space. We studied the molecular distribution of NaCN around IRC +10216, a molecule detected previously, but whose origin is not clear. High angular resolution maps allow us to model the abundance distribution of this molecule and check suggeste…
We present near-infrared spectra of ten planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC), acquired with the FIRE and GNIRS spectrometers on the 6.5-m Baade and 8.1-m Gemini South Telescopes, respectively. We detect Se and/or Kr emission lines in eight of these objects, the first detections of n-capture elements in Magellanic Cloud PNe. Our abundance analysis shows large s-process enrichments of Kr (0.6-1.3 dex) in the six PNe in which it was detected, and Se is enriched by 0.5-0.9 dex in five objects. We also estimate upper limits to Rb and Cd abundances in these …
