Coherent interactions at a distance provide a powerful tool for quantum simulation and computation. The most common approach to realize an effective long-distance coupling 'on-chip' is to use a quantum mediator, as has been demonstrated for superconducting qubits and trapped ions. For quantum dot arrays, which combine a high degree of tunability with extremely long coherence times, the experimental demonstration of coherent spin-spin coupling via an intermediary system remains an important outstanding goal. Here, we use a linear triple-quantum-dot array to demonstrate a first working example of a coherent interaction between two distant spins via a quantum mediator. The two outer dots are occupied with a single electron spin each and the spins experience a superexchange interaction through the empty middle dot which acts as mediator. Using single-shot spin read-out we measure the coherent time evolution of the spin states on the outer dots and observe a characteristic dependence of the exchange frequency as a function of the detuning between the middle and outer dots. This approach may provide a new route for scaling up spin qubit circuits using quantum dots and aid in the simulation of materials and molecules with non-nearest neighbour couplings such as MnO, high-temperature superconductors and DNA. The same superexchange concept can also be applied in cold atom experiments.
We investigate the coherent energy transfer between two quantum systems mediated by a quantum bus. In particular, we consider the energy transfer process between two qubits, and how it can be influenced by using a third qubit or photons in a resonant cavity as mediators. Inspecting different figures of merit and considering both on and off-resonance configurations, we characterize the energy transfer performances. We show that, while the qubit-mediated transfer shows no advantages with respect to a direct coupling case, the cavity-mediated one is progressively more and more efficient as functi…
We consider heat transfer between two thermal reservoirs mediated by a quantum system using the generalized quantum Langevin equation. The thermal reservoirs are treated as ensembles of oscillators within the framework of the Drude-Ullersma model. General expressions for the heat current and thermal conductance are obtained for arbitrary coupling strength between the reservoirs and the mediator and for different temperature regimes. As an application of these results we discuss the origin of Fourier's law in a chain of large, but finite subsystems coupled to each other by the quantum mediators…
The Heisenberg exchange interaction between neighboring quantum dots allows precise voltage control over spin dynamics, due to the ability to precisely control the overlap of orbital wavefunctions by gate electrodes. This allows the study of fundamental electronic phenomena and finds applications in quantum information processing. Although spin-based quantum circuits based on short-range exchange interactions are possible, the development of scalable, longer-range coupling schemes constitutes a critical challenge within the spin-qubit community. Approaches based on capacitative coupling and ca…
Heisenberg exchange coupling between neighboring electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots provides a powerful tool for quantum information processing and simulation. Although so far unrealized, extended Heisenberg spin chains can enable long-distance quantum information transfer and the generation of non-equilibrium quantum states. In this work, we implement simultaneous, coherent exchange coupling between all nearest-neighbor pairs of spins in a quadruple quantum dot. The main challenge in implementing simultaneous exchange couplings is the nonlinear and nonlocal dependence of the exchang…
A wide class of materials acquires magnetic properties due to particle interactions through exchange forces. These can be atoms and molecules composing the system itself, as in the case of numerous magnetic substances. Or these could be different defects, as in the case of graphene, graphite, carbon nanotubes, and related materials. The theory is suggested describing fast magnetization reversal in magnetic systems, whose magnetism is caused by exchange interactions. The effect is based on the coupling of a magnetic sample with an electric circuit producing a feedback magnetic field. This metho…
We investigate the zero-frequency shot noise of electronic tunneling through a single quantum dot (SQD) and coherently coupled quantum dots (CQD) taking into account the Coulomb interaction. Within Hartree-Fock approximation, the analytical expressions of current and zero-frequency shot noise are self-consistently derived in the framework of full counting statistics for the both systems. We demonstrate that the correction term of zero-frequency shot noise induced by the intradot Coulomb interaction is almost negligible compared to the noninteracting shot noise in a SQD, while in a CQD the inte…
Non-Hermitian physics has recently attracted much attention in optics and photonics. Less explored is non-Hermitian magnonics that provides opportunities to take advantage of the inevitable dissipation of magnons or spin waves in magnetic systems. Here we demonstrate non-Hermitian coherent coupling of two distant nanomagnets by fast spin waves with sub-50 nm wavelengths. Magnons in two nanomagnets are unidirectionally phase-locked with phase shifts controlled by magnon spin torque and spin-wave propagation. Our results are attractive for analog neuromorphic computing that requires unidirection…
Quantum information science has the potential to revolutionize modern technology by providing resource-efficient approaches to computing, communication, and sensing. Although the physical qubits in a realistic quantum device will inevitably suffer errors, quantum error correction creates a path to fault-tolerant quantum information processing. Quantum error correction, however, requires that individual qubits can interact with many other qubits in the processor. Engineering this high connectivity can pose a challenge for platforms like electron spin qubits that naturally favor linear arrays. H…
With any roughness at the interface of an indirect-bandgap semiconducting dot, the phase of the valley-orbit coupling can take on a random value. This random value, in double quantum dots, causes a large change in the exchange splitting. We demonstrate a simple analytical method to calculate the phase, and thus the exchange splitting and singlet-triplet qubit frequency, for an arbitrary interface. We then show that, with lateral control of the position of a quantum dot using a gate voltage, the valley-orbit phase can be controlled over a wide range, so that variations in the exchange splitting…
We investigate the effectiveness of a microwave cavity as a mediator of interactions between two resonant exchange (RX) qubits in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) over long distances, limited only by the extension of the cavity. Our interaction model includes the orthonormalized Wannier orbitals constructed from Fock-Darwin states under the assumption of a harmonic QD confinement potential. We calculate the qubit-cavity coupling strength in a Jaynes Cummings Hamiltonian, and find that dipole transitions between two states with an asymmetric charge configuration constitute the relevant RX quoit…
Charge-neutral excitons in semiconductor quantum dots have a small finite energy separation caused by the anisotropic exchange splitting. Coherent excitation of neutral excitons will generally excite both exciton components, unless the excitation is parallel to one of the dipole axes. We present a polaron master equation model to describe two-exciton pumping using a coherent continuous wave pump field in the presence of a realistic anisotropic exchange splitting. We predict a five-peak incoherent spectrum, thus generalizing the Mollow triplet to become a Mollow quintuplet. We experimentally co…
We study a two-species mixture of exciton-polaritons with self- and cross-interaction nonlinearities in a double well structure, in the presence of relaxation and continuous pumping. We identify the conditions that render the system parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric, and investigate its dynamic and static properties. We show that the system can exhibit long-term coherent oscillations of populations of the two polaritonic components between the two potential wells, and can simulate the dynamics of a pair of spin-1/2 particles (qubits) in the presence of exchange interaction.
Initialization, manipulation, and measurement of a three-spin qubit are demonstrated using a few-electron triple quantum dot, where all operations can be driven by tuning the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. Multiplexed reflectometry, applied to two nearby charge sensors, allows for qubit readout. Decoherence is found to be consistent with predictions based on gate voltage noise with a uniform power spectrum. The theory of the exchange-only qubit is developed and it is shown that initialization of only two spins suffices for operation. Requirements for full multi-qubit control using only…
Coupling between spatially separated magnets can be mediated by excitations such as photons and phonons, which can be characterized as coherent coupling and dissipative coupling with real and imaginary coupling rate. We theoretically predict the existence of dynamic exchange coupling in a closed magneto-elastic system mediated by attenuating elastic waves and whose coupling rate is complex in general, leading to alternating repulsive or attractive spectrum depending on thickness of the elastic media. The presence of dynamic exchange coupling and its competition with coherent coupling are numer…
A scheme based on Coherent Tunneling by Adiabatic Passage (CTAP) of exchange-only spin qubit quantum states in a linearly arranged double quantum dot chain is demonstrated. Logical states for the qubit are defined by adopting the spin state of three electrons confined in a double quantum dot. The possibility to obtain gate operations entirely with electrical manipulations makes this qubit a valuable architecture in the field of quantum computing for the implementation of quantum algorithms. The effect of the external control parameters as well as the effect of the dephasing on the coherent tun…
Recent experiments on semiconductor quantum dots have demonstrated the ability to utilize a large quantum dot to mediate superexchange interactions and generate entanglement between distant spins. This opens up a possible mechanism for selectively coupling pairs of remote spins in a larger network of quantum dots. Taking advantage of this opportunity requires a deeper understanding of how to control superexchange interactions in these systems. Here, we consider a triple-dot system arranged in linear and triangular geometries. We use configuration interaction calculations to investigate the int…
We study the feasibility of reaching the ultrastrong (USC) and deep-strong coupling (DSC) regimes of light-matter interaction, in particular at resonance condition, with a superconducting charge qubit, also known as Cooper-Pair box (CPB). We numerically show that by shunting the charge qubit with a high-impedance LC-circuit, one can maximally reach both USC and DSC regimes exceeding the classical upper bound $|g|\leq \sqrt{ω_qω_r}/2$ between two harmonic systems with frequencies $ω_q$ and $ω_r$. As an application, we propose a hybrid system consisting of two CPBs ultrastrongly coupled to an LC…
The coherent control of spin qubits forms the basis of many applications in quantum information processing and nanoscale sensing, imaging and spectroscopy. Such control is conventionally achieved by direct driving of the qubit transition with a resonant global field, typically at microwave frequencies. Here we introduce an approach that relies on the resonant driving of nearby environment spins, whose localised magnetic field in turn drives the qubit when the environmental spin Rabi frequency matches the qubit resonance. This concept of environmentally mediated resonance (EMR) is explored expe…
The population transfer dynamics of model donor-bridge-acceptor systems is studied by comparing a recently developed polaron-transformed quantum master equation (PQME) with the well-known Redfield and Forster theories of quantum transport. We show that the PQME approach reduces to these two theories in their respective limits of validity and naturally interpolates between them as a function of the system-bath coupling strength. By exploring the parameter space of our model problem, we identify novel regimes of transport dynamics in bridged systems like those encountered in biological and organ…
Long range interaction between distant spins is an important building block for the realization of large quantum-dot network in which couplings between pairs of spins can be selectively addressed. Recent experiments on coherent logical states oscillation between remote spins facilitated by intermediate electron states has paved the first step for large scale quantum information processing. Reaching this ultimate goal requires extensive studies on the superexchange interaction on different quantum-dot spatial arrangements and electron configurations. Here, we consider a linear triple-quantum-do…
