Forward top production is observed, in the $μ+b$ final state, with the 3 fb$^{-1}$ Run I dataset collected by the LHCb detector. The combined cross-section for $t\bar{t}$ and single top production at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV is measured, for muons from the W boson with $p_{\rm T} > 25$ GeV in the pseudo-rapidity range 2.0$< η<$4.5 and with a b-tagged jet with 50$ < p_{\rm T} < 100$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.2$< η<$4.2. The production cross-sections are found to be in agreement with NLO predictions.
The LHCb detector at the LHC offers unique coverage of forward rapidities for studies of Central Exclusive Production (CEP) and soft QCD. CEP measurements allow the investigation of the nature of pomerons, and provide constraints on low-x gluon phenomenology, probing potential saturation effects. Moreover LHCb can test phenomenological models of soft QCD processes, by measuring the production of forward hadrons in pp collisions. In these proceedings the latest results from the LHCb experiment will be presented.
Inclusive c and b-jet tagging algorithms have been developed to utilize the excellent secondary vertex reconstruction and resolution capabilities of the LHCb detector. The validation and performance of these tagging algorithms are reported using the full run 1 LHCb dataset at 7 and 8 TeV. Jet-tagging has been applied to muon+jet final states to measure both the W+c,b-jet charge asymmetries and the ratios of W+c,b-jet to W+jet and W+jet to Z+jet production. The forward top production cross-section is also measured using the muon+b-jet final. All results are found to be consistent with standard …
Detailed results on top quark production at LHCb are reported from the first observation of top production in a forward region detector to the first measurement of top pair production at LHCb with 13 TeV data.
Studies in the forward region of charged particle multiplicity and density, as well as energy flow, are presented. These measurements are performed using data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected with the LHCb detector. The results are compared to predictions from a variety of Monte Carlo event generators and are used to test underlying event and hadronization models as well as the performance of event generator tunes in the forward region.
We quantify the constraints on the flavour separation between the quarks and antiquarks in the proton provided by the recent forward weak gauge boson production data from the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8 TeV. Performed in the framework of the NNPDF3.1 global analysis, this study highlights the key role that the LHCb W and Z data have in achieving a robust quark flavour separation in the large-x region, including the strange and charm quarks. We demonstrate how the LHCb measurements lead to improved determinations of the the up and down quark PDFs in the region $x\ge 0.1$, with an unce…
LHCb, while purpose built for $b-$physics, also functions as a general purpose forward detector, covering the pseudo-rapidity range 2.0 to 5.0. LHCb has performed several measurements including jets, which concern, e.g., QCD, top and Higgs physics. A selection of LHCb results in this area will be presented, focusing on the most recent ones.
Proton-lead and lead-proton data taking during 2013 has allowed LHCb to expand its physics program to heavy ion physics. Results include the first forward measurement of Z production in proton-lead collisions as well as a measurement of the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production of prompt and displaced J/$ψ$, $ψ$(2S) and $Υ$. Angular particle correlations have also been measured for events of varying charged particle activity.
A rescaling of the SU(2) isospin triangles constraining $ϕ_2$ ($α$) that relies on measurements of the experimentally cleaner relative branching fractions, as opposed to those absolute, is proposed. Paving the way towards more systematically sustainable analysis, this method promises to eliminate a dominant systematic at Belle II amongst others, namely the uncertainty on the number of $B \bar B$ pairs in data. Furthermore, a $ϕ_2$ constraint in the $B \to ρρ$ system at LHCb that is more independent of Belle II input is shown to become viable even without a measurement of $C\!P$ violation in $B…
Two-particle angular correlations are studied in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=\,13\,$TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The LHCb detector provides measurement in the very forward region, $2 < η< 5$. This region is complementary to other experiments and allows to explore low Bjorken-$x$ region. The correlations are studied as a function of difference in pseudorapidity $\left(Δη\right)$ and azimuthal angle $\left(Δϕ\right)$ in several $p_T$ and activity classes. Proton-proton collisions are studied using two datasets corresponding to minimum-bias sample and a sample obtained via a…
The LHCb experiment covers a unique region of acceptance at forward rapidities in the high energy proton-proton collisions of the LHC. This means that measurements of particle production in LHCb are directly sensitive to the parton distribution functions at low Björken-$x$ values. Several measurements of inclusive $W$ and $Z/γ^{\ast}$ production with the Run-I dataset are reported in these proceedings. Further measurements of $W$ and $Z/γ^{\ast}$ production in association with inclusive jets and $b$- and $c$-tagged jets are also reported.
Precision electroweak tests are a powerful probe of physics beyond the Standard Model, but the sensitivity is limited by the precision with which the $W$ boson mass ($M_W$) has been measured. The Parton Distribution Function (PDF) uncertainties are a potential limitation for measurements of $M_W$ with LHC data. It has recently been pointed out that, thanks to LHCb's unique forward rapidity acceptance, a new measurement of $M_W$ by LHCb can improve this situation. Here we report on a detailed study on the mechanism driving the PDF uncertainty in the LHCb measurement of $M_W$, and propose an app…
The LHCb experiment offers the unique opportunity to study heavy-ion interactions in the forward region (2 <eta< 5), in a kinematic domain complementary to the other 3 large experiments at the LHC. The detector has excellent capabilities for reconstructing quarkonia and open charm states, including baryons, down to zero $p_T$. It can separate the prompt and displaced charm components. In $p$Pb collisions, both forward and backward rapidities are covered thanks to the possibility of beam reversal. Results include measurements of the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward ratio for cha…
Because of its forward coverage, LHCb can probe the valence quark distributions of protons and nuclei at small and large Bjorken-x with high precision. This proceeding presents new LHCb measurements of Z boson production in association with charm jet in the forward region of proton-proton collisions and Z boson production in proton-lead collisions. Z+charm jet production could be sensitive to a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function. The measurements of Z production in proton-lead collisions provide new constraints on the partonic structure of nucleons inside nuclei…
The LHCb experiment has the unique possibility, among the LHC experiments, to be operated in fixed target mode, using its internal gas target. The energy scale achievable at the LHC, combined with the LHCb forward geometry and detector capabilities, allow to explore particle production in a wide Bjorken-$x$ range at the $\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm NN}} \sim 100$ GeV energy scale, providing novel inputs to nuclear and cosmic ray physics. The first measurement of antiproton production in collisions of LHC protons on helium nuclei at rest is presented. The knowledge of this cross-section is o…
Measurements of electroweak production in the forward region at the LHC provide unique and complementary information to those performed in the central region. Studies have been performed not just by LHCb, a dedicated forward detector, but also by ATLAS and CMS, which are primarily situated in the central region but can exploit forward calorimetry coverage to contribute to the understanding of SM processes in the forward region.
The small-$x$ gluon in global fits of parton distributions is affected by large uncertainties from the lack of direct experimental constraints. In this work we provide a precision determination of the small-$x$ gluon from the exploitation of forward charm production data provided by LHCb for three different centre-of-mass (CoM) energies: 5~TeV, 7~TeV and 13~TeV. The LHCb measurements are included in the PDF fit by means of normalized distributions and cross-section ratios between data taken at different CoM values, $R_{13/7}$ and $R_{13/5}$. We demonstrate that forward charm production leads t…
In the last years, the \lhcb experiment established itself as an important contributor to heavy ion physics by exploiting some of its specific features. Production of particles, notably heavy flavour states, can be studied in p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies in the forward rapidity region (pseudorapidity between 2 and 5), providing measurements which are highly complementary to the other LHC experiments. Moreover, owing to its forward geometry, the detector is also well suited to study fixed-target collisions, obtained by impinging the LHC beams on gas targets with different mass…
We calculate differential cross sections for $c \bar c$- and $b \bar b$-dijet production in $pp$-scattering at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV in the $k_T$-factorization and hybrid approaches with different unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs). We present distributions in transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the leading jet, rapidity difference between the jets and the dijet invariant mass. Our results are compared to recent LHCb data on forward production of heavy flavour dijets, measured recently for the first time individually for both, charm and bottom flavours. We found that an agr…
Measurements of the $W$ boson mass are planned by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, but for the time being, these may be unable to compete with the current world average precision of 15~MeV, due to uncertainties in the PDFs. We discuss the potential of a measurement by the LHCb experiment based on the charged lepton transverse momentum $p_T^{\ell}$ spectrum in $W \to μν$ decays. The unique forward acceptance of LHCb means that the PDF uncertainties would be anti-correlated with those of $p_T^{\ell}$ based measurements by ATLAS and CMS. We compute an average of ATLAS, CMS and LHCb measurements of …
We study the phenomenology of light spin-0 particles and stress that they can be efficiently searched for at the LHCb experiment in the form of dimuon resonances. Given the large production cross sections in the forward rapidity region together with the efficient triggering and excellent mass resolution, it is argued that LHCb can provide unique sensitivity to such states. We illustrate our proposal using the recent measurement of Upsilon production by LHCb, emphasising the importance of mixing effects in the bottomonium resonance region. The implications for dimuon decays of spin-0 bottomoniu…
This article presents results of the Z boson production in the proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV and $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}= 8.16$ TeV collected in 2013 and 2016, respectively, by the LHCb detector at the LHC in forward and backward rapidity. The great precision of the 2016 data are found compatible with nPDFs theoretical predictions within large theoretical uncertainties, and can be useful to constraint new predictions.
The forward LHCb acceptance offers the possibility of measuring the top-quark pair asymmetry in a kinematic region that does not receive overwhelming dilution from the symmetric gluon-fusion channel. To investigate this possibility, two leptonic final states are identified, and analysis strategies are proposed for each channel with 14~TeV data. Leading fixed-order predictions are then provided for the relevant leptonic asymmetry variables in each channel. If backgrounds can be experimentally constrained, statistically, a non-zero asymmetry is estimated to be observable beyond 5$σ$ confidence l…
The dilepton production in diffractive and exclusive processes at forward rapidities considering ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC is investigated. Predictions for the $e^+ e^-$, $μ^+ μ^-$ and $τ^+ τ^-$ cross sections are presented taking into account of realistic cuts that can be implemented by the LHCb Collaboration in a future experimental analysis. Our results indicate that the background associated with the diffractive production can be strongly suppressed and the exclusive processes can be cleanly separated. For the $τ^+ τ^-$ production, the semi and purely leptonic decay chan…
LHCb provides unique opportunities to study $W$ and $Z$ boson production at forward rapidities at the LHC. It has recently been suggested that a measurement of the $W$ boson mass by LHCb would complement measurements by ATLAS and CMS. All measurements of the $W$ mass at hadron colliders are subject to PDF uncertainties, but there would be a partial cancellation of the overall PDF uncertainty when the LHCb result is included in an average with measurements by ATLAS and CMS. Here we review measurements of $W$ and $Z$ boson production by LHCb, and report on a new study of the PDF uncertainty on t…
At LHCb, proton parton distribution functions (PDFs) can be studied in a unique phase space complementary to that accessible by ATLAS and CMS, corresponding to low and high values of Bjorken-$x$. The measurements of vector boson production in the forward region, with and without an associated jet, are presented. These measurements can be used to constrain the proton PDFs, and in particular, the production of a $Z$ boson in association with a $c$-jet can be studied to measure the intrinsic charm content of the proton.
We evaluate the performance of an LHCb-like detector using a fast simulation of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 50 and 100 TeV. The study shows that detector acceptances and resolutions could be similar to those at the LHC. Together with the increase of production cross-sections of light particles with higher energy, such a hypothetical experiment could reach unprecedented sensitivities in flavor observables.
The unique forward LHCb acceptance opens the possibility for performing precision Standard Model (SM) processes in a kinematical regime beyond the reach of both ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this article we discuss the feasibility of performing $W^{\pm}j$ measurements with 14 TeV LHCb data, and find that the leptonic asymmetry at high pseudorapidity, with appropriate cuts on the associated jet, can provide a factor of three reduction on the $d$ quark PDF uncertainty in a region of Bjorken $x > 0.5$.
In 2015, the LHCb collaboration endorsed the proposal to pursue an ambitious heavy-ion physics program. In 2013, LHCb has demonstrated its capabilities to operate successfully in p-Pb and Pb-p collisions, leading already to several important publications in the field. The measurements of the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production of prompt and displaced J/$ψ$, $ψ$(2S) and $Υ$(1S) states, as well as the production of prompt $D^{0}$ mesons, have allowed to extend the knowledge of Cold Nuclear Matter effects on open heavy flavours and quarkonium production. The measurement of…
The production of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ mesons decaying into dimuon final state is studied at the LHCb experiment, with rapidity in the range of (1.5, 4.0) or (-5.0, -2.5) in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 /fb. The nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production ratio are determined for prompt $J/ψ$, $J/ψ$ from b-hadron decay and $Υ(1S)$ mesons in study of the cold nuclear matter effects.
Charged particle multiplicities in proton-proton collisions measured in the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s$=7 TeV in different windows of pseudorapidity $η$, in the forward region of the vertex detector are studied by using different statistical distributions. Three distributions are compared with the data and the moments of the distributions are calculated. The data constituting two sets, one of minimum bias events and another of hard QCD events are analysed. The distributions considered derive from different functional forms based on underlying interaction dynamics. The…
Measurements of quarkonia production in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions are of important value to study photon-photon and photon-nucleus interactions, the partonic structure of nuclei, and mechanisms of vector-meson production. LHCb has studied both coherent $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ mesons in ultra-peripheral collisions using PbPb data at forward rapidity with the highest precision currently accessible. In addition, measurements of $Z$ production in $p$Pb collisions provide new constraints on the partonic structure of nucleons bound inside nuclei. Here will present these measurements of quarkon…
The LHCb detector provides accurate vertex reconstruction and hadronic particle identification, which make the experiment an ideal place to look for light long-lived particles (LLP) decaying into Standard Model (SM) hadrons. In contrast with the typical search strategy relying on energetic jets and a high multiplicity of tracks from the LLP decay, LHCb can identify LLPs in exclusive, specific hadronic final states. To illustrate the idea, we study the sensitivity of LHCb to an exotic Higgs decay $h\to SS$, followed by the displaced decay of GeV-scale scalars into charged kaons $S\to K^+K^-$. W…
We review the constraints on the small-x gluon PDF that can be derived by exploiting the forward D meson production data from the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=5,7$ and 13 TeV. We then discuss the phenomenological implications of the resulting improved small-x gluon for ultra-high energy astrophysics, in particular neutrino telescopes, as well as for the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) with $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV. We illustrate how at the FCC even electroweak scale cross-sections can become sensitive to the small-x region of the quark and gluon PDFs, and then demonstrate how the addition of…
These proceedings summarize the LHCb measurements of charm- and beauty-hadron production in pPb collisions. The studies are made down to very low-\pt of the observed heavy-flavor hadrons using fully reconstructed decays. Nuclear matter effects are quantified via nuclear modification factors and forward-backward production ratios. A strong suppression is observed at positive rapidity (proton beam direction), while a modest or no suppression is seen for the backward rapidity (lead beam direction). The nuclear parton distributions of the lead nucleus is constrained down to Bjorken-$x\sim10^{-5}$,…
The recent observation by the IceCube experiment of cosmic neutrinos at energies up to a few PeV heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At such high energies, the conventional neutrino flux is suppressed and the prompt component from charm meson decays is expected to become the dominant background to astrophysical neutrinos. Charm production at high energies is however theoretically uncertain, both since the charm mass is at the boundary of applicability of perturbative QCD, and also because the calculations are sensitive to the poorly-known gluon PDF at small-x. In this work we provide …
This article presents recent results of the Z boson production in the proton-lead collisions and the charmonium production in the ultra-peripheral lead-lead collisions at the LHC collected during 2013 to 2018 by the LHCb detector. The potential heavy ion programs in these topics are also discussed.
The asymmetry in the forward region production cross section of D^\pm is calculated using the heavy-quark recombination mechanism for pp collisions at 7 TeV. By suitable choices of four non-perturbative parameters, our calculated results can reproduce those obtained at LHCb. We find A_p ~ -1% when integrated over 2.0 GeV < p_T < 18 GeV and 2.2< eta <4.75, which agrees with A_p=-0.96\pm0.26\pm0.18% as measured by LHCb. Furthermore, the calculated distributions in eta and p_T agree reasonably well with those obtained at LHCb.
We calculate the rate of double open charm production in the forward kinematics studied recently in the LHCb experiment. We find that the mean field approximation for the double parton GPD (Generalized parton distributions), which neglects parton - parton correlations, underestimates the rate by a factor of two. The enhancement due to the perturbative QCD correlation \12 mechanism which explains the rate of double parton interactions at the central rapidities is found to explain 60 $÷$ 80 \% of the discrepancy. We argue that the nonperturbative fluctuations leading to non-factorized (correlate…
In this paper we describe the history of the LHCb experiment over the last three decades, and its remarkable successes and achievements. LHCb was conceived primarily as a b-physics experiment, dedicated to CP violation studies and measurements of very rare b decays, however the tremendous potential for c-physics was also clear. At first data taking, the versatility of the experiment as a general-purpose detector in the forward region also became evident, with measurements achievable such as electroweak physics, jets and new particle searches in open states. These were facilitated by the excell…
The goal of LHCspin is to develop, in the next few years, innovative solutions and cutting-edge technologies to access spin physics in polarised fixed-target collisions at high energy, exploring the unique kinematic regime offered by LHC and exploiting new final states by means of the LHCb detector. The forward geometry of the LHCb spectrometer is perfectly suited for the reconstruction of particles produced in fixed-target collisions. This configuration, with centre of mass energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=115~\rm{GeV}$ in $p-p$ interactions to $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}=72~\rm{GeV}$ in hea…
