The recent observation by the IceCube experiment of cosmic neutrinos at energies up to a few PeV heralds the beginning of neutrino astronomy. At such high energies, the conventional neutrino flux is suppressed and the prompt component from charm meson decays is expected to become the dominant background to astrophysical neutrinos. Charm production at high energies is however theoretically uncertain, both since the charm mass is at the boundary of applicability of perturbative QCD, and also because the calculations are sensitive to the poorly-known gluon PDF at small-x. In this work we provide detailed perturbative QCD predictions for charm and bottom production in the forward region, and validate them by comparing with recent data from the LHCb experiment at 7 TeV. Finding good agreement between data and theory, we use the LHCb measurements to constrain the small-x gluon PDF, achieving a substantial reduction in its uncertainties. Using these improved PDFs, we provide predictions for charm and bottom production at LHCb at 13 TeV, as well as for the ratio of cross-sections between 13 and 7 TeV. The same calculations are used to compute the energy distribution of neutrinos from charm decays in pA collisions, a key ingredient towards achieving a theoretically robust estimate of charm-induced backgrounds at neutrino telescopes.
We present predictions for the prompt-neutrino flux arising from the decay of charmed mesons and baryons produced by the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere, making use of a QCD approach on the basis of the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme for the description of charm hadroproduction at next-to-leading order, complemented by a consistent set of fragmentation functions. This same scheme is used for the description of charm hadroproduction at both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. We compare the theoretical predictions to those already obtained b…
IceCube Neutrino Astronomy is considered. The tau neutrino flavor paucity and the asymmetry for the tracks suggest a dominant atmospheric charm noise. The correlated cascades and tracks asymmetry with relevant statistics enforce the charm noise dominance in the data. The charm signal may explain at once the absence of correlation for the tracks data with the galactic plane and with known brightest gamma sources.
The small-$x$ gluon in global fits of parton distributions is affected by large uncertainties from the lack of direct experimental constraints. In this work we provide a precision determination of the small-$x$ gluon from the exploitation of forward charm production data provided by LHCb for three different centre-of-mass (CoM) energies: 5~TeV, 7~TeV and 13~TeV. The LHCb measurements are included in the PDF fit by means of normalized distributions and cross-section ratios between data taken at different CoM values, $R_{13/7}$ and $R_{13/5}$. We demonstrate that forward charm production leads t…
We calculate the single transverse-spin asymmetry for open charm production in $pp$ collisions within the QCD collinear factorization approach. We include contributions from both twist-three quark-gluon and tri-gluon correlation functions. We find that the quark-gluon correlation functions alone generate only a very small asymmetry for open charm production in the kinematic region of current interest at RHIC, so that the observation of any significant single-spin asymmetry would be a clear indication of the presence of tri-gluon correlations inside a polarized proton. We furthermore demonstrat…
Recent theoretical explanations for how hydrodynamic-like flow can build up quickly in small collision systems (hydrodynamization) has led to a microscopic picture of flow building up in a gluon-dominated phase before chemical equilibrium between quarks and gluons has been attained. The goal of this contribution to Offshell-2021 is to explore consequence of assuming a long-lived gluon-dominated phase, which we shall denote a gluon plasma (GP). As these consequences are naturally enhanced in a large systems, we assume and explore the extreme scenario in which a GP would be created in AA collisi…
The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory will be a precision Quantum Chromodynamics machine that will enable a vast physics program with electron+proton/ion collisions across a broad center-of-mass range. Measurements of hard probes such as heavy flavor in deep inelastic scatterings will be an essential component to the EIC physics program and are one of the detector R\&D driving aspects. In this paper we study the projected statistical precision of open charm hadron production through exclusive hadronic channel reconstruction with a silicon detector concept currently …
We review the constraints on the small-x gluon PDF that can be derived by exploiting the forward D meson production data from the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=5,7$ and 13 TeV. We then discuss the phenomenological implications of the resulting improved small-x gluon for ultra-high energy astrophysics, in particular neutrino telescopes, as well as for the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) with $\sqrt{s}=100$ TeV. We illustrate how at the FCC even electroweak scale cross-sections can become sensitive to the small-x region of the quark and gluon PDFs, and then demonstrate how the addition of…
Using the color evaporation model, the cross section for charmonium production in p+p collision is calculated in quark-gluon plasma. The threshold energy for open charms is given by the free energy potential from lattice calculations, the initial charm quark pairs by the Pythia simulations, and their time evolution by solving the Langevin equation. It is found that the threshold energy which decreases with temperature reduces the cross section while the invariant mass of charm pair which decreases by collisions enhances it. As a result, charmonia production is suppressed by $30$\sim$50\%$ whil…
We study the effect of thermal charm production on charmonium regeneration in high energy nuclear collisions. By solving the kinetic equations for charm quark and charmonium distributions in Pb+Pb collisions, we calculate the global and differential nuclear modification factors $R_{AA}(N_{part})$ and $R{AA}(p_t)$ for $J/Ψ$s. Due to the thermal charm production in hot medium, the charmonium production source changes from the initially created charm quarks at SPS, RHIC and LHC to the thermally produced charm quarks at Future Circular Collider (FCC), and the $J/Ψ$ suppression ($R_{AA}<1$) observe…
We evaluate the frame-independent gluon and charm parton-distribution functions (PDFs) of the deuteron utilizing light-front quantization and the impulse approximation. We use a nuclear wave function obtained from solving the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation with the realistic Argonne v18 nuclear force, which we fold with the proton PDF. The predicted gluon distribution in the deuteron (per nucleon) is a few percent smaller than that of the proton in the domain x_{bj} = Q^2 / (2 p_N \cdot q) \sim 0.4, whereas it is strongly enhanced for x_{bj} larger than 0.6. We discuss the applicability…
We demonstrate that a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) with a dilute admixture of heavy quarks has, in general, a lower speed of sound than a "pure" QGP without effects from heavy flavors. The change in the speed of sound is sensitive to the details of the theory, making the hydrodynamic response to "flavoring" a sensitive probe of the underlying microscopic dynamics. We suggest that this effect may be measured in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions by relating the event-by-event number of charm quarks to flow observables such as the average transverse momentum.
We propose low-virtuality leptoproduction of open-charm, $p^\uparrow l\to D^0+X$, as a probe of the gluon Sivers function (GSF). At leading-order, this process directly probes the gluon content of the proton, making detection of a trasverse single-spin asymmetry in the process a clear indication of a non-zero GSF. Considering the kinematics of the proposed future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), we present predictions for asymmetry using fits of the GSF available in literature. We also study the asymmetry at the level of muons produced in D-meson decays and find that the asymmetry is preserved the…
We calculate at the leading order in $α_s$ the QCD amplitude for exclusive neutrino production of a $D^*$ or $D_s^*$ charmed vector meson on a nucleon. We work in the framework of the collinear QCD approach where generalized parton distributions (GPDs) factorize from perturbatively calculable coefficient functions. We include $O(m_c)$ terms in the coefficient functions and $O(m_D)$ term in the definition of heavy meson distribution amplitudes. The show that the analysis of the angular distribution of the decay $D_{(s)}^*\to D_{(s)} π$ allows to access the transversity gluon GPDs.
We study the possibility to probe the unpolarized and linearly polarized transverse momentum- dependent gluon distributions in unpolarized pp collision in charmonium and bottomonium produc- tion, employing non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) based color octet model within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework. The transverse momentum (p T ) and rapidity distributions of J/ψ and Υ(1S) at LHCb, RHIC and AFTER energies are estimated. Significant modulations in transverse momentum spectrum of quarkonium in the low p T region is obtained when contributions of linearly polarized gluon…
We calculate the atmospheric flux of prompt neutrinos, produced in decays of the charmed particles at energies beyond 1 TeV. Cross sections of the $D$-mesons and $Λ^{+}_{c}$ baryons production in pA and $π$A collisions are calculated in the phenomenological quark-gluon string model (QGSM) which is updated using of the recent measurements of cross sections of the charmed meson production in the LHC experiments. A new estimate of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux is obtained and compared with the limit of the IceCube experiment as well as with predictions of other charm production models.
The drag and diffusion coefficients are studied within the framework of Fokker-Planck dynamics for the case of a charm quark propagating in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. The space-time evolution of the nuclear matter created in the relativistic heavy-ion collision is modelled using MUSIC, a 3+1 D relativistic viscous hydrodynamic approach. The effect of viscous corrections to the heavy quark transport coefficients is explored by considering scattering processes with thermal quarks and gluons in the medium. It is observed that the momentum diffusion of the heavy quarks is sensitive to the sh…
After a few microseconds of the creation of our Universe through the Big Bang, the primordial matter was believed to be a soup of the fundamental constituents of matter -- quarks and gluons. This is expected to be created in the laboratory by colliding heavy nuclei at ultra-relativistic speeds. A plasma of quarks and gluons, called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) can be created at the energy and luminosity frontiers in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Heavy quarks, namely the…
Lattice QCD studies on fluctuations and correlations of charm quantum number have established that deconfinement of charm degrees of freedom sets in around the chiral crossover temperature, $T_c$, i.e. charm degrees of freedom carrying fractional baryonic charge start to appear. By reexamining those same lattice QCD data we show that, in addition to the contributions from quark-like excitations, the partial pressure of charm degrees of freedom may still contain significant contributions from open-charm meson and baryon-like excitations associated with integral baryonic charges for temperatures…
We propose measurement of transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in charmonium production as a probe of gluon Sivers function. We estimate SSA in low virtuality electroproduction of $J/ψ$ using color evaporation model of charmonium production and existing models of the gluon Sivers function and find sizable asymmetry at JLab, HERMES, COMPASS and eRHIC energies.
We explore the feasibility of direct measurements of nuclear gluon densities using heavy-quark production (open charm, beauty) at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We focus on the regions x > 0.3 (EMC effect) and x ~ 0.05-0.1 (antishadowing), where the nuclear modifications of the gluon density offer insight into non-nucleonic degrees of freedom and the QCD structure of nucleon-nucleon interactions. We describe the charm production rates and momentum distributions in nuclear deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at large x_B, and comment on the possible methods for charm reconstruction using nex…
We consider heavy mesons with charm and bottom in nuclear medium. We construct the effective Lagrangian with axial-vector coupling including 1/M-corrections for the heavy meson mass $M$ by following the velocity-rearrangement invariance. As an application, we consider heavy mesons, $\bar{\mathrm{D}}$ and $\bar{\mathrm{D}}^{\ast}$ mesons for charm and $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{B}^{\ast}$ mesons for bottom, bound in nuclear matter, and we discuss their in-medium masses modified by the interaction with nucleons via pion exchanges including the 1/M-corrections. The mass modifications are affected …
A selfconsistent calculation of heavy-quark (HQ) and quarkonium properties in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is conducted to quantify flavor transport and color screening in the medium. The main tool is a thermodynamic $T$-matrix approach to compute HQ and quarkonium spectral functions in both scattering and bound-state regimes. The $T$-matrix, in turn, is employed to calculate HQ selfenergies which are implemented into spectral functions beyond the quasiparticle approximation. Charmonium spectral functions are used to evaluate eulcidean-time correlation functions which are compared to results f…
Heavy quark structure functions from HERA provide a direct handle on the medium and small-x gluon PDF. In this contribution, we discuss ongoing progress on the implementation of the FONLL General-Mass scheme with running heavy quark masses, and of its benchmarking with the HOPPET and OpenQCDrad codes, and then present the impact of the recently released combined HERA charm production cross sections in the NNPDF2.3 analysis. We find that the combined charm data contribute to constraining the gluon and quarks at small values of Bjorken-x.
We show that the charm structure functions $F^{c}_{k}$ have a hard pomeron behavior at low x, as the gluon distribution is dominated by the hard (Lipatov) pomeron at small x and all $Q^{2}$ values. It is shown that the charm structure functions obtained, using the gluon distribution functions, are in agreement with data from HERA in the next-to-leading analysis (NLO). Having checked that this behavior gives the charm structure functions exponent independent of x. With respect to the hard (Lipatov) pomeron for the low-x gluon distribution, we provide a compact formula for the ratio $R^{c} = F^{…
The evaluation of quarkonium regeneration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHICs) requires the knowledge of the heavy-quark phase space distributions in the expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP) fireball. We employ a semi-classical charmonium transport approach where regeneration processes explicitly account for the time-dependent spectra of charm quarks via Langevin simulations of their diffusion. The inelastic charmonium rates and charm-quark transport coefficients are computed from the same charm-medium interaction. The latter is modeled by perturbative rates, augmented with a $K$-f…
We use the LHCb data on the forward production of $D$ mesons at 7, 13 and 5 TeV to make a direct determination of the gluon distribution, $xg$, at NLO in the $10^{-5} \lesssim x \lesssim 10^{-4}$ region. We first use a simple parametrization of the gluon density in each of the four transverse momentum intervals of the detected $D$ mesons. Second, we use a double log parametrization to make a combined fit to all the LHCb $D$ meson data. The values found for $xg$ in the above $x$ domain are of the similar magnitude (or a bit larger) than the central values of extrapolations of the gluons obtaine…
We use the hard (Lipatov) pomeron for the low-x gluon distribution and provide a compact formula for the ratio $R^{c} =F_{L}^{c}/F_{2}^{c}$ that is useful to extract the charm structure function from the reduced charm cross-section, in particular at DESY HERA. Our results show that this ratio is independent of x and independent of the DGLAP evolution of the gluon PDF. As a result, we show that the charm structure function and the reduced charm cross-section exponents do not have the same behaviour at very low x. This difference is independent of the input gluon distribution functions and predi…
Recent experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the quarkonia suppression in a thermal QCD medium created at heavy ion collisions is a complex interplay of various physical processes. In this article we put together most of these processes in a unified way to calculate the charmonium survival probability (nuclear modification factor) at energies available at relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) and large hadron collider (LHC) experiments. We have included shadowing as the dominant cold nuclear matter (CNM) effect. Further, gluo-dissociation and collision damping has been included wh…
We discuss production of far-forward $D$ mesons/antimesons and neutrinos/antineutrinos from their semileptonic decays in pp-collisions at the LHC. We include the gluon-gluon fusion $gg \to c\bar{c}$, the intrinsic charm (IC) $gc \to gc$ as well as the recombination $gq \to Dc$ partonic mechanisms. The calculations are performed within the $k_T$-factorization approach and the hybrid model using different unintegrated parton distribution functions (uPDFs) for gluons from the literature, as well as within the collinear approach. We compare our results to the LHCb data for forward $D^{0}$-meson pr…
