We demonstrate that a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) with a dilute admixture of heavy quarks has, in general, a lower speed of sound than a "pure" QGP without effects from heavy flavors. The change in the speed of sound is sensitive to the details of the theory, making the hydrodynamic response to "flavoring" a sensitive probe of the underlying microscopic dynamics. We suggest that this effect may be measured in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions by relating the event-by-event number of charm quarks to flow observables such as the average transverse momentum.
After reviewing the evidence that QCD matter at ultrarelativistic energies behaves as a very good fluid, we describe the connection of QCD fluidity to heavy quark observables. We review the way in which heavy quark spectra can place tighter limits on the viscosity of QCD matter. Finally, we show that correlations between flow observables and the event-by-event charm quark abundance ("flavoring") can shed light on the system's equation of state.
We evaluate the frame-independent gluon and charm parton-distribution functions (PDFs) of the deuteron utilizing light-front quantization and the impulse approximation. We use a nuclear wave function obtained from solving the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation with the realistic Argonne v18 nuclear force, which we fold with the proton PDF. The predicted gluon distribution in the deuteron (per nucleon) is a few percent smaller than that of the proton in the domain x_{bj} = Q^2 / (2 p_N \cdot q) \sim 0.4, whereas it is strongly enhanced for x_{bj} larger than 0.6. We discuss the applicability…
In the first part of the talk, we briefly review the problem of parton-energy loss and thermalization at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and discuss how heavy quarks (charm and bottom) can help to resolve the existing experimental and theoretical puzzles. The second part of the talk is devoted to the properties of heavy quarkonia in the (strongly interacting) Quark-Gluon Plasma (sQGP) and their consequences for observables in heavy-ion collisions.
Using the color evaporation model, the cross section for charmonium production in p+p collision is calculated in quark-gluon plasma. The threshold energy for open charms is given by the free energy potential from lattice calculations, the initial charm quark pairs by the Pythia simulations, and their time evolution by solving the Langevin equation. It is found that the threshold energy which decreases with temperature reduces the cross section while the invariant mass of charm pair which decreases by collisions enhances it. As a result, charmonia production is suppressed by $30$\sim$50\%$ whil…
We study the effect of thermal charm production on charmonium regeneration in high energy nuclear collisions. By solving the kinetic equations for charm quark and charmonium distributions in Pb+Pb collisions, we calculate the global and differential nuclear modification factors $R_{AA}(N_{part})$ and $R{AA}(p_t)$ for $J/Ψ$s. Due to the thermal charm production in hot medium, the charmonium production source changes from the initially created charm quarks at SPS, RHIC and LHC to the thermally produced charm quarks at Future Circular Collider (FCC), and the $J/Ψ$ suppression ($R_{AA}<1$) observe…
After a few microseconds of the creation of our Universe through the Big Bang, the primordial matter was believed to be a soup of the fundamental constituents of matter -- quarks and gluons. This is expected to be created in the laboratory by colliding heavy nuclei at ultra-relativistic speeds. A plasma of quarks and gluons, called Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) can be created at the energy and luminosity frontiers in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), at Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York, USA, and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. Heavy quarks, namely the…
The drag and diffusion coefficients are studied within the framework of Fokker-Planck dynamics for the case of a charm quark propagating in an expanding quark-gluon plasma. The space-time evolution of the nuclear matter created in the relativistic heavy-ion collision is modelled using MUSIC, a 3+1 D relativistic viscous hydrodynamic approach. The effect of viscous corrections to the heavy quark transport coefficients is explored by considering scattering processes with thermal quarks and gluons in the medium. It is observed that the momentum diffusion of the heavy quarks is sensitive to the sh…
A selfconsistent calculation of heavy-quark (HQ) and quarkonium properties in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is conducted to quantify flavor transport and color screening in the medium. The main tool is a thermodynamic $T$-matrix approach to compute HQ and quarkonium spectral functions in both scattering and bound-state regimes. The $T$-matrix, in turn, is employed to calculate HQ selfenergies which are implemented into spectral functions beyond the quasiparticle approximation. Charmonium spectral functions are used to evaluate eulcidean-time correlation functions which are compared to results f…
We study vacuum masses of charmonia and the charm-quark diffusion coefficient in the quark-gluon plasma based on the spectral representation for meson correlators. To calculate the correlators, we solve the quark gap equation and the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation in the rainbow-ladder approximation. It is found that the ground-state masses of charmonia in the pseudoscalar, scalar, and vector channels can be well described. For $1.5\,T_c<T<3.0\,T_c$, the value of the diffusion coefficient $D$ is comparable with that obtained by lattice QCD and experiments: $3.4<2πTD<5.9$. Relating the d…
Charm production from the quark-gluon plasma created in the midrapidity of central heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is studied in the next-to-leading order in QCD. Using a schematic longitudinally boost-invariant and transversally expanding fire-cylinder model, we find that charm production could be appreciably enhanced at LHC as a result of the high temperature that is expected to be reached in the produced quark-gluon plasma. Sensitivities of our results to the number of charm quark pairs produced from initial hard scattering, the initial thermalization time and temper…
We study electromagnetic field effect on charmonium gluon-dissociation in quark-gluon plasma. With the effective Hamiltonian derived from QCD multipole expansion under an external electromagnetic field, we first solve the two-body Schrödinger equation for a pair of charm quarks with mean field potentials for color and electromagnetic interactions and obtain the charmonium binding energies and wave functions, and then calculate the gluon-dissociation cross-section and decay width by taking the color electric and magnetic dipole interactions as perturbations above the mean field and employing Fe…
Parameterizing the charm and anticharm quark momentum distributions by the Tsallis distribution, we study the nonequilibrium effect on the charmonium production rate in a quark-gluon plasma up to the next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. We find that nonequilibrium charm and anticharm quarks suppress the charmonium production rate compared to that from equilibrated ones. We further show that the suppression factor calculated with the charm quark relaxation time, which has been frequently used in the literature, is close to our results.
In relativistic heavy ion collisions, also the bremsstrahlung of gluons in the fragmentation regions of the nuclei suppresses the produced charmonium states. In the energy range of the SPS, the radiation of semi-hard gluons occurs in the Bethe-Heitler regime and the density of gluons and therefore the suppression goes like $(AB)^{1\over3}$, where $A$ and $B$ are the nucleon numbers of the projectile and target nuclei. In contrast, the suppression via collisions with nucleons is proportional to $(A^{1\over3} + B^{1\over3})$. Parameter free perturbative QCD calculations are in a good agreement w…
We have investigated the charmonium survival probability, in a high baryon density parton plasma, expected to be produced in nuclear collisions at FAIR. Charmonia are assumed to undergo complete dissociation by color screening, if the in-medium Debye radius becomes comparable to the spatial size of the corresponding bound state. Results indicate a non-trivial dependence of the suppression pattern on the plasma evolution dynamics. A much larger magnitude of suppression is foreseen induced by cold nuclear matter compared to that due to plasma screening.
We calculate rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of charmonium formed in high energy heavy ion collsions from incoherent recombination of charm quarks. The results are very sensitive to the corresponding distributions of the charm quarks, and thus can serve as a probe of the state of matter produced in the heavy ion collision. At one extreme we generate a set of charm pair momenta directly from pQCD amplitudes, which are appropriate if one can neglect interaction of the quarks with the medium. At the other extreme we generate momenta of charm quarks in thermal equilibrium with the e…
Lattice QCD studies on fluctuations and correlations of charm quantum number have established that deconfinement of charm degrees of freedom sets in around the chiral crossover temperature, $T_c$, i.e. charm degrees of freedom carrying fractional baryonic charge start to appear. By reexamining those same lattice QCD data we show that, in addition to the contributions from quark-like excitations, the partial pressure of charm degrees of freedom may still contain significant contributions from open-charm meson and baryon-like excitations associated with integral baryonic charges for temperatures…
We consider heavy mesons with charm and bottom in nuclear medium. We construct the effective Lagrangian with axial-vector coupling including 1/M-corrections for the heavy meson mass $M$ by following the velocity-rearrangement invariance. As an application, we consider heavy mesons, $\bar{\mathrm{D}}$ and $\bar{\mathrm{D}}^{\ast}$ mesons for charm and $\mathrm{B}$ and $\mathrm{B}^{\ast}$ mesons for bottom, bound in nuclear matter, and we discuss their in-medium masses modified by the interaction with nucleons via pion exchanges including the 1/M-corrections. The mass modifications are affected …
Charmonium directed flows are studied based on transport model coupled with the realistic three dimensional expansions of the bulk medium. The non-central symmetric nucleus-nucleus collisions can generate the rotating quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with symmetry-breaking longitudinal distributions. In $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au-Au semi-central collisions, charmonium are primordially produced in the initial hard process, they are mainly dissociated by the initial tilted source with high temperatures and then move out of the bulk medium to keep the early information of the medium. Charmonia are less a…
The evaluation of quarkonium regeneration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHICs) requires the knowledge of the heavy-quark phase space distributions in the expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP) fireball. We employ a semi-classical charmonium transport approach where regeneration processes explicitly account for the time-dependent spectra of charm quarks via Langevin simulations of their diffusion. The inelastic charmonium rates and charm-quark transport coefficients are computed from the same charm-medium interaction. The latter is modeled by perturbative rates, augmented with a $K$-f…
We study the propagation of charm quarks, produced from the initial fusion of partons, in an equilibrating quark-gluon plasma which may be formed in the wake of relativistic collisions of gold nuclei. Initial conditions are taken from a self screened parton cascade model and the chemical equilibration is assumed to proceed via gluon multiplication and quark production. The energy loss suffered by the charm quarks is obtained by evaluating the drag force generated by the scattering with quarks and gluons in the medium. We find that the charm quarks may loose only about 10% of their initial ener…
In ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the strong electric field can be produced by the colliding nuclei. The magnitude of the electric field $E$ is on the order of $eE\sim m_π^2$ at the early stage of the collision. In quark gluon plasma (QGP), such a strong electric field can have a significant impact on the evolution of charmonia. We employ the time-dependent Schrödinger equation to study the evolution of charmonium states in the strong electric field generated by the moving charges. The electric field can result in transitions between charmonium states with different angular momenta. …
The growing consensus that a strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) has been observed at the SPS and RHIC experiments suggests a different framework for examining heavy quark dynamics. We present both semi-analytical treatment of Fokker-Planck (FP) evolution in pedagogical examples and numerical Langevin simulations of evolving charm quark-antiquark pairs on top of a hydrodynamically expanding fireball. In this way, we may conclude that the survival probability of bound charmonia states is greater than previously estimated, as the spatial equilibration of pairs proceeds through a ``slowly …
We study the charmonium coherent photoproduction and hadroproduction consistently with modifications from both cold and hot nuclear matters. The strong electromagnetic fields from fast moving nucleus interact with the other target nucleus, producing abundant charmonium in the extremely low transverse momentum region $p_T<0.1$ GeV/c. This results in significative enhancement of $J/ψ$ nuclear modification factor in semi-central and peripheral collisions. In the middle $p_T$ region such as $p_T<3\sim 5$ GeV/c, $J/ψ$ final yield is dominated by the combination process of single charm and anti-char…
We study charm production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions by using the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach. The initial charm quarks are produced by the Pythia event generator tuned to fit the transverse momentum spectrum and rapidity distribution of charm quarks from Fixed-Order Next-to-Leading Logarithm (FONLL) calculations. The produced charm quarks scatter in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with the off-shell partons whose masses and widths are given by the Dynamical Quasi-Particle Model (DQPM) which reproduces the lattice QCD equation-of-state in thermal equili…
By solving the rate equation in an expanding quark-gluon plasma, we study thermal production of charm quarks in central Pb+Pb collisions at the Future Circular Collider. With the charm quark production cross section taken from the perturbative QCD at the next-to-leading order, we find that charm quark production from the quark-gluon plasma can be appreciable compared to that due to initial hard scattering between colliding nucleons.
Starting from an earlier representation of the independent dimension 6 gluon operators in terms of color electric and magnetic fields, we estimate their changes near the critical temperature $T_c$ using the temperature dependence of the dimension 4 electric and magnetic condensates extracted from pure gauge theory on the lattice. We then improve the previous QCD sum rules for the $J/ψ$ mass near $T_c$ based on dimension 4 operators, by including the contribution of the dimension 6 operators to the OPE. We find an enhanced stability in the sum rule and confirm that the $J/ψ$ will undergo an abr…
Considering the collisional energy loss rates of heavy quarks from hard light parton interactions the total energy loss of a charm quark for a static medium has been computed. For the energy range $E\sim (5-10)$ GeV of charm quark, it is found to be almost same order as that of radiative ones estimated to a first order opacity expansion. The collisional energy loss will become much more important for lower energy charm quarks and this feature could be very interesting for phenomenology of hadrons spectra. Using such collisional energy loss rates we estimate the momentum loss distribution emplo…
This dissertation presents a theoretical study of soft hadron production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We explore the principles governing the hadronization of the expanding QGP fireball, and to understand its properties. Much of the ongoing effort is to demonstrate the validity of a QGP hadronization model which describes the particle production data accurately. We begin with a centrality study of multistrange hadrons from Au-Au collisions at 62.4 GeV at RHIC. We show that the statistical hadronization model (SHM) well describes particle production in QGP hadronization. For all centra…
Opposite-sign lepton pairs ($ee$,$eμ$ and $μμ$) from open charm decay are proposed as a measure of nuclear shadowing effects. Via an approximate scaling the ratio of the dilepton spectra from $p+A$ to those from $pp$ reflects the shadowing function well. We show that the required measurements are feasible at the Relativistic Heavy ion Collider (RHIC) by considering the backgrounds according to the proposed PHENIX detector geometry.
We discuss diffractive dissociation of gluons into heavy quark pairs. The particular mechanism is similar to the diffractive dissociation of virtual photons into quarks, which drives diffractive deep inelastic production of charm in the low-mass diffraction, or large $β$-region. There, it can be understood, with some reservations, in terms of a valence heavy quark content of the Pomeron. The amplitude for the $g p \to Q \bar Q p$ is derived in the impact parameter and momentum space. The cross section for single diffractive $p p \to Q \bar Q p X$ is calculated as a convolution of the elementar…
Open charm production during the equilibration of a gluon dominated parton plasma is calculated, with both the time-dependent temperature and parton densities given by a set of rate equations. Including pre-thermal production, the total enhancement of open charm production over the initial gluon fusion depends sensitively on the initial parton density and the effective temperature. The dependence of the pre-thermal charm production on the space-momentum correlation in the initial parton phase-space distribution is also discussed.
We employ a time-dependent Schrödinger equation to study the evolution of a $c\bar c$ dipole in a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Medium effects on the heavy-quark potential in the QGP are found to significantly affect the timescales of the internal evolution of the dipole. Color-screening can enhance the overlap of the expanding wavepackage with excited states at high temperature, while it is reduced at lower temperatures where the dipole favors the formation of the charmonium ground state. We investigate the consequences of this mechanism on the double ratio of charmonium nuclear modification fact…
The effects of gluon radiation by charm quarks on the transport coefficients {\it e.g.} drag, longitudinal and transverse diffusion and shear viscosity have been studied within the ambit of perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) and kinetic theory. We found that while the soft gluon radiation has substantial effects on the transport coefficients of the charm quarks in the quark gluon plasma its effects on the equilibrium distribution function is insignificant.
We construct QCD sum rules for the anti-charmed pentaquark $Θ_c (3099)$, recently reported at HERA. The sum rules are constructed similarly with the $Θ^+ (1540)$ sum rules using the anti-charmed analogue of the $Θ^+$ interpolating field. The strange quark and quark-gluon mixed condensates, which were important in the $Θ^+$ sum rules, are replaced by the gluon condensates whose contribution to the OPE is suppressed due to the heavy quark mass. Our result suggests that the parity of $Θ_c$ is positive. We identify the difference from the $Θ^+$ sum rule, which leads to the positive parity in this …
We suggest the variation of charmonium suppression with Feynman x_F in heavy ion collisions as a novel and sensitive probe for the properties of the matter created in such reactions. In contrast to the proton-nucleus case where nuclear suppression is weakest at small x_F, final state interactions with the comoving matter create a minimum at x_F=0, which is especially deep and narrow if a quark-gluon plasma is formed. While a particularly strong effect is predicted at SPS, at the higher RHIC energy it overlaps with the expected sharp variation with x_F of nuclear effects and needs comparison wi…
We review the statistical hadronization picture for charmonium production in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. Our starting point is a brief reminder of the status of the thermal model description of hadron production at high energy. Within this framework an excellent account is achieved of all data for hadrons built of (u,d,s) valence quarks using temperature, baryo-chemical potential and volume as thermal parameters. The large charm quark mass brings in a new (non-thermal) scale which is explicitely taken into account by fixing the total number of charm quarks produced in the collision.…
Using the two-component model that includes charmonium production from initial nucleon-nucleon hard scattering and regeneration in the produced quark-gluon plasma, we study $J/ψ$ production in heavy ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC. For the expansion dynamics of produced hot dense matter, we use a schematic viscous hydrodynamic model with the specific shear viscosity taken, respectively, to be twice and ten times the lower bound of $1/4π$ suggested by the Ads/CFT correspondence in the quark-gluon plasma and in the hadron gas. For the initial dissociation and the subsequent thermal decay of …
Charmonium production in heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a kinetic theory framework incorporating in-medium properties of open- and hidden-charm states in line with recent QCD lattice calculations. A continuously decreasing open-charm threshold across the phase boundary of hadronic and quark-gluon matter is found to have important implications for the equilibrium abundance of charmonium states. The survival of $J/ψ$ resonance states above the transition temperature enables their recreation also in the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Including effects of chemical and thermal off-equilibrium, we…
We generalized our approach to the hypernuclei with $A=B=3$ containing one charm or one bottom quark. We derive the relativistic nine-quark equations using the dispersion relation technique. The hypernuclei as the system of interacting quarks and gluons are considered. The relativistic nine-quark amplitudes of hypernuclei, including the constituent quarks with the charm or bottom are calculated. The approximate solutions of these equations are obtained using a method based on the extraction of leading singularities of the amplitudes. The poles of the multiquark amplitudes allow us to determine…
We study the $B_c^+$ production in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV. In the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions, heavy quarks make random motions with the energy loss. We employ the Langevin equations to study the non-equilibrium distributions of heavy quarks and the Instantaneous Coalescence Model (ICM) to study the hadronization process. Due to abundant charm and bottom quarks in the QGP, their coalescence probability is significantly enhanced compared with the situations in proton-proton collisions. We find that the final production of $B_c^+$ is increased …
We update our previous work of a Langevin-with-interaction model for charmonium in heavy-ion collisions, by considering the effect due to recombination. We determine the contribution to J/psi yields from charm-anticharm pairs whose constituent quarks originate from two different hard processes. Like the surviving J/psi states, the recombinant J/psi also undergo both a stochastic interaction, determined by a hydrodynamical simulation of the heavy-ion collision, and an interaction determined by the heavy quark-antiquark potentials measured on the lattice for appropriate temperatures. From the re…
In this short review we summarize experimental information and theoretical results for the low-energy dissociation cross sections of charmonia by light hadrons. These cross sections are required for the simulation of charmonium absorption through collisions with comovers in heavy ion collisions, which competes with quark-gluon plasma production as a charmonium-suppression mechanism. If the cross sections are sufficiently large these dissociation reactions may be misinterpreted as an effect of quark-gluon plasma production. Theoretical predictions for these RHIC-related processes have used vari…
We show that large fluctuations of D mesons kinetic energy (or momentum) distributions might be a signature of a phase transition to the quark gluon plasma (QGP). In particular, a jump in the variance of the momenta or kinetic energy, as a function of a control parameter (temperature or Fermi energy at finite baryon densities) might be a signature for a first order phase transition to the QGP. This behaviour is completely consistent with the order parameter defined for a system of interacting quarks at zero temperature and finite baryon densities which shows a jump in correspondance to a first…
Heavy quark energy loss in a hot QCD plasma is computed taking into account the competing effects due to suppression of zeroth order gluon radiation below the plasma frequency and the enhancement of gluon radiation due to first order medium induced Bremsstrahlung. The results suggest a surprising degree of cancellation between the two medium effects for charm quarks and provides a possible explanation for the null effect observed by PHENIX in the prompt electron spectrum in Au+Au at $\surd s=$ 130 AGeV.
We study the production and dynamics of heavy quarks in the parton cascade model for relativistic heavy ion collisions. The model is motivated by the QCD parton picture and describes the dynamics of an ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collision in terms of cascading partons which undergo scattering and multiplication while propagating. We focus on the dynamics of charm quark production and evolution in p+p and Au+Au collisions for several different interaction scenarios, i.e. collisions only between primary partons without radiation of gluons, multiple collisions without radiation of gluons and mu…
Centrality dependence of J/psi production in Au-Au collisions at 200 GeV nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy is studied using the Glauber model plus the kinetic formation model. Initial J/psi production and destruction by incoming nucleons are described by the Glauber model. J/psi-charm equilibration in the gluon plasma is described by the kinetic formation model. We explore the possibility of J/psi suppression suggested by the recent PHENIX data. We show that the J/psi yield monotonically decreases with increasing centrality in the kinetic formation model when the charm mass is smaller than…
