Quantum spin liquids are exotic Mott insulators that carry extraordinary spin excitations and thus, when doped, expected to afford novel metallic states coupled to the unconventional magnetic excitations. The organic triangular-lattice system k-(ET)4Hg2.89Br8 is a promising candidate for the doped spin-liquid and hosts a non-Fermi liquid at low pressures. We show that, in the non-Fermi liquid regime, the charge transport confined in the layer gets deconfined sharply at low temperatures, coinciding with the entrance of spins into a quantum regime as signified by a steep decrease in spin susceptibility behaving like the triangular-lattice Heisenberg model indicative of spin-charge separation at high temperatures. This suggests a new type of non-Fermi liquid, where interlayer charge-deconfimement is associated with spin-charge entanglement.
Analogs of the high-T$_c$ cuprates have been long sought after in transition metal oxides. Due to the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the $5d$ perovskite iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ exhibit a low-energy electronic structure remarkably similar to the cuprates. Whether a superconducting state exists as in the cuprates requires understanding the correlated spin-orbit entangled electronic states. Recent experiments discovered hidden order in the parent and electron doped iridates, some with striking analogies to the cuprates, including Fermi surface pockets, Fermi arcs, and pseudogap. Here, we study …
Intertwining of spin, charge and pairing correlations in the repulsive two-dimensional Hubbard model is shown through unrestricted variational calculations, with projected wavefunctions free of symmetry breaking. A crossover from incommensurate antiferromagnetism to stripe order naturally emerges in the hole-doped region when increasing the on-site coupling. Although effective pairing interactions are identified, they are strongly fragmented in several modes including d-wave pairing and more exotic channels related to an underlying stripe. We demonstrate that the entanglement of a mean-field w…
We report on an angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) study of bulk electron-doped perovskite iridate, (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7. Fermi surface pockets are observed with a total electron count in keeping with that expected from La substitution. Depending on the energy and polarization of the incident photons, these pockets show up in the form of disconnected "Fermi arcs", reminiscent of those reported recently in surface electron-doped Sr2IrO4. Our observed spectral variation is consistent with the coexistence of an electronic supermodulation with structural distortion in the system.
An infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) is a variational tensor network ansatz for 2D wave functions in the thermodynamic limit where the accuracy can be systematically controlled by the bond dimension $D$. We show that for the doped Hubbard model in the strongly correlated regime ($U/t=8$, $n=0.875$) iPEPS yields lower variational energies than state-of-the-art variational methods in the large 2D limit, which demonstrates the competitiveness of the method. In order to obtain an accurate estimate of the energy in the exact infinite $D$ limit we introduce and test an extrapolation te…
In this paper, we study the lightly doped Kitaev spin liquid (DKSL) and find it to be a Fermi liquid state. The DKSL has a closed Fermi surface around the center of the Brillouin zone with the quantized volume determined by the Luttinger's theorem. It has well-defined quasiparticles near the Fermi surface and can be detected in the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The DKSL has the topological Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) as its neutral background. It violates the Wiedemann-Franz law and has a large Wilson ration. These results has the potential experimental test in the iridates upon dopi…
We characterize the electron doping evolution of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_x$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission. Concomitant with the metal insulator transition around $x\approx0.05$ we find the emergence of coherent quasiparticle states forming a closed small Fermi surface of volume $3x/2$, where $x$ is the independently measured La concentration. The quasiparticle weight $Z$ remains large along the entire Fermi surface, consistent with the moderate renormalization of the low-energy dispersion. This indicates a conventional, weakly correlated Fermi liquid state with a momentum ind…
A slave-fermion gauge-theory approach of the t-J model: Doping-induced complex magnetic structure and Z$_{2}$ spin-gapped anomalous metal in an antiferromagnetic doped Mott insulator
The Weyl semimetallic compound Eu2Ir2O7 along with its hole doped derivatives (which is achieved by substituting trivalent Eu by divalent Sr) are investigated through transport, magnetic and calorimetric studies. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) temperature is found to get substantially reduced with hole doping and for 10% Sr doping the composition is metallic down to temperature as low as 5 K. These doped compounds are found to violate the Mott-Ioffe-Regel condition for minimum electrical conductivity and show distinct signature of non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature. The MIT in …
We calculate the Fermi surface of electrons in hole-doped, extended t-J models on a square lattice in a regime where no long-range antiferromagnetic order is present, and no symmetries are broken. Using the "spinon-dopon" formalism of Ribeiro and Wen, we show that short-range antiferromagnetic correlations lead to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface into hole pockets which are not necessarily centered at the antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary. The Brillouin zone area enclosed by the Fermi surface is proportional to the density of dopants away from half-filling, in contrast to the conv…
We explore the anisotropy in low frequency conductivity as a function of hole doping in multiorbital models of pnictides by analyzing the Drude weight in the $x$ and $y$ directions of a ($π$, 0) spin-density wave state. A reduction in the conductivity anisotropy with increased hole doping, and subsequent sign reversal, both observed in experiments, is found to be a common trend in these models. This behavior arises due to the interplay of low energy orbitally-resolved density of states and the geometrical features of the Fermi surface. An understanding of anisotropy in the electron doped regim…
Mechanism of superconductivity (SC) in a purely interacting electron system has been one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. In the BCS theory, the Landau's Fermi liquid is a normal state against which an SC instability occurs once an \emph{additional} pairing force is added. We show that in the doped Mott insulator an \emph{intrinsic} SC ground state (specifically a Luther-Emery state in a finite-doping two-leg $t$-$J$ ladder) can be directly turned into a Fermi-gas-like state by merely switching off the hidden statistical sign structure via two schemes. It points to a…
The relaxation rate in Nb-doped strontium titanate involving different scattering channels is investigated theoretically. It is demonstrated that the total relaxation rate in SrTiO_{3} is provided mainly by two mechanisms. The Baber electron-electron scattering with participation of both Coulomb and phonon-mediated electron-electron interactions provides the T^{2}-dependence of the relaxation rate. The scattering on the potential landscape caused by impurities is responsible for the residual relaxation rate at low temperatures. A good agreement with experiment is achieved accounting for all ph…
Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, an unconventional superconductor, is known to possess an incommensurate spin density wave instability driven by Fermi surface nesting. Here we report a static spin density wave ordering with a commensurate propagation vector $q_c$ = (0.25 0.25 0) in Fe-doped Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, despite the magnetic fluctuations persisting at the incommensurate wave vectors $q_{ic}$ = (0.3 0.3 L) as in the parent compound. The latter feature is corroborated by the first principles calculations, which show that Fe substitution barely changes the nesting vector of the Fermi surface. These results sugges…
The two-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model is studied with the use of finite-size cluster worldline quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. This model is widely used for simulation of the band structure of FeAs clusters, which are structure elements of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. The choice of a special basis set of hyper-sites allowed to take into account four-fermion operator terms and to overcome partly the sign problem. Spectral functions and the density of states for various parameters of the model are obtained in the undoped and low-doped regimes. The correlated distortion of th…
We study in this work the ground state entanglement properties of two models of non-interacting fermions moving in one-dimension (1D), that exhibit metal-insulator transitions. We find that entanglement entropy grows either logarithmically or in a power-law fashion in the metallic phase, thus violating the (1D version of) entanglement area law. No such violation is found in the insulating phase. We further find that characteristics of {\em single fermion} states at the Fermi energy (which can {\em not} be obtained from the many-fermion Slater determinant) is captured by the lowest energy singl…

Systematic analysis of the planar resistivity, Hall effect and cotangent of the Hall angle for the electron-doped cuprates reveals underlying Fermi-liquid behavior even deep in the antiferromagnetic part of the phase diagram. The transport scattering rate exhibits a quadratic temperature dependence, and is nearly independent of doping, compound and carrier type (electrons vs. holes), and hence universal. Our analysis moreover indicates that the material-specific resistivity upturn at low temperatures and low doping has the same origin in both electron- and hole-doped cuprates.
We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC) method. We show that the strong EPI, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong EPI fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high tempera…
Motivated by recent experimental measurements, we study the quasiparticle spectra and the collective excitations in doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, in which the interesting interplay between the electronic correlations and strong spin-orbital coupling (SOC) exists. To include the SOC, we use the Hugenholtz diagrams to extend the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approach to the case where the SU(2) symmetry can be broken. By using this generalized FLEX method, we find a weak pseudogap behavior near $(π,0)$ in the slightly electron-doped system, with the corresponding Fermi arc formed by the partial destruction…
We report on the direct probing of the Fermi surface in the bulk of the electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ at different doping levels by means of magnetoresistance quantum oscillations. Our data reveal a sharp qualitative change in the Fermi surface topology, due to translational symmetry breaking in the electronic system which occurs at a critical doping level significantly exceeding the optimal doping. This result implies that the $(π/a,π/a)$ ordering, known to exist at low doping levels, survives up to the overdoped superconducting regime.
We study the nature of the electronic states in the intermediate band formed by interstitial titanium in silicon. Our single-site description combines effects of electronic correlations, captured by dynamical mean-field theory, and disorder, modeled using the coherent potential approximation and the typical medium mean-field theory. For all studied concentrations an extended metallic state with a strongly depleted density of states at the Fermi level is obtained. The self-energy is characteristic to Fermi-liquids and for certain temperatures reveals the existence of coherent quasi-particles.
We consider a class of strongly correlated Fermi systems that exhibit an interaction-induced flat band pinned to the Fermi surface, and generalize the Landau strategy to accommodate a flat band and apply the more comprehensive theory to electron systems of solids. The non-Fermi-liquid behavior that emerges is compared with relevant experimental data on heavy-fermion metals and electron-doped high-$T_c$ compounds. We elucidate how heavy-fermion metals have extremely low superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, its maximum reached in the heavy-fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$ does not exceed 2.3 K,…
The "states-non-conserving" fermion density of states (DOS), deduced from the specific heat of hole-doped cuprates, could arise from a Kondo or heavy fermion-like DOS being suppressed by anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The large Fermi surface predicted by band theory and observed experimentally, is still expected for zero pseudogap, but with an effective mass corresponding to a Kondo temperature ~ 800 K. A finite pseudogap could divide it into Fermi arcs. Theoretical results for the asymmetric Anderson model can account for the experimental Wilson ratio.
Recent experiments have revealed incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates, e.g. YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. However, its relationship with the pseudogap is still controversial. In this work, we take a phenomenological synthesis of the doped resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the CDW order. Starting from the Yang-Rice-Zhang Green's function ansatz for the doped RVB state [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 174501 (2006)], in which the Fermi surface is partially truncated into four nodal hole-like Fermi pockets by the antinodal RVB gap,…
We study thermodynamic properties of the doped Hubbard model on the square lattice in the regime of strong charge and spin fluctuations at low temperatures near the metal-to-insulator crossover and obtain results with controlled accuracy using the diagrammatic Monte Carlo method directly in the thermodynamic limit. The behavior of the entropy reveals a non-Fermi-liquid state at sufficiently high interactions near half-filling: a maximum in the entropy at non-zero doping develops as the coupling strength is increased, along with an inflection point, evidencing a metal to non-Fermi-liquid crosso…
We formulate an analytical recursive method to generate the wave function of doped short-range resonating valence bond (RVB) states as a tool to efficiently estimate multisite entanglement as well as other physical quantities in doped quantum spin ladders. We prove that doped RVB ladder states are always genuine multipartite entangled. Importantly, our results show that within specific doping concentration and model parameter regimes, the doped RVB state essentially characterizes the trends of genuine multiparty entanglement in the exact ground states of the Hubbard model with large onsite int…
We demonstrate the existence of novel interaction effects in hole-doped semiconductor quantum wells which are connected to dramatic changes in the Fermi surface geometry occurring upon variation of the doping. We present band structure calculations showing that quantum wells formed in $p$-type cubic semiconductors develop nested Fermi surfaces at a critical hole density set by the width $d$ of the quantum well $k_F\sim π/d$. Nesting gives rise to competing superconducting and charge or spin density wave order, which we analyze using the perturbative renormalization group method. The correlated…
We report on semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in the electron-overdoped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our data provide convincing evidence for magnetic breakdown in the system. This shows that a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface persists, at least at strong magnetic fields, up to the highest doping level of the superconducting regime. Our results suggest an intimate relation between translational symmetry breaking and the superconducting pairing in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors.
The electronic structure of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1- xCox)2As2 has been measured with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The data reveal a marked photon energy dependence of points in momentum space where the bands cross the Fermi energy, a distinctive and direct signature of three-dimensionality in the Fermi surface topology. By providing a unique example of high temperature superconductivity hosted in layered compounds with three-dimensional electronic structure, these findings suggest that the iron-arsenides are unique materials, quite different from the …
The electronic structure of low-density n-type SrTiO3 delta-doped heterostructures is investigated by angular dependent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. In addition to a controllable crossover from a three- to two-dimensional Fermi surface, clear beating patterns for decreasing dopant layer thicknesses are found. These indicate the lifting of the degeneracy of the conduction band due to subband quantization in the two-dimensional limit. Analysis of the temperature-dependent oscillations shows that similar effective masses are found for all components, associated with the splitting of the light …
Hall and optical conductivity experiments on the cuprates indicate that the low-energy fermionic degrees of freedom in a doped Mott insulator posess a component that is dynamcially generated and hence determined by the temperature. We show explicitly how the spectrum in the lower Hubbard band should be partitioned to describe such dynamically generated charge degrees of freedom and corroborate this picture with the results from the exact low-energy theory of the Hubbard model. A consequence of such dynamics is that the Landau one-to-one correspondence between bare electrons and the effective f…
We have carried out first-principles calculations of the Compton scattering spectra to demonstrate that the filling of the hole Fermi surface in LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs produces a distinct signature in the Fourier transformed Compton spectrum when the momentum transfer vector lies along the [100] direction. We thus show how the critical concentration $x_c$, where hole Fermi surface pieces are filled up and the superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is expected to be suppressed, can be obtained in a bulk-sensitive manner.
We report on laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-d). The data show the existence of a nodal hole-pocket Fermi-surface both in the normal and superconducting states. We prove that its origin is long-range antiferromagnetism by an analysis of the coherence factors in the main and folded bands. This coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetism and superconductivity implies that electron-doped cuprates are two-Fermi-surface superconductors. The measured superconducting gap in the nodal hole-pocket is compatible with a …
Whether the doped t-J model on the Kagome lattice supports exotic superconductivity has not been decisively answered. In this paper, we propose a new class of variational states for this model and perform large-scale variational Monte Carlo simulation on it. The proposed variational states are parameterized by the SU(2)-gauge-rotation angles, as the SU(2)-gauge structure hidden in the Gutzwiller-projected mean-field ansatz for the undoped model is broken upon doping. These variational doped states smoothly connect to the previously studied U(1) $π$-flux or $0$-flux states, and energy minimizat…
High temperature superconductivity in cuprates arises from an electronic state that remains poorly understood. We report the observation of a related electronic state in a non-cuprate material Sr2IrO4 in which the unique cuprate Fermiology is largely reproduced. Upon surface electron doping through in situ deposition of alkali-metal atoms, angle-resolved photoemission spectra of Sr2IrO4 display disconnected segments of zero-energy states, known as Fermi arcs, and a gap as large as 80 meV. Its evolution toward a normal metal phase with a closed Fermi surface as a function of doping and temperat…
We develop a formalism for constructing particle-number-conserving Gaussian fermionic projected entangled pair states [U(1)-GfPEPS] and show that these states can describe ground states of band insulators and gapless fermions with band touching points. When using them as variational Ansätze for two Dirac fermion systems ($π$-flux model on the square lattice and $[0,π]$-flux model on the kagome lattice), we find that the U(1)-GfPEPS, even with a relatively small bond dimension, can accurately approximate the Dirac Fermi sea ground states. By applying Gutzwiller projectors on top of these U(1)-G…
A phenomenological description for confinement of fractionalized excitations is proposed in the gauge theory approach for doped Mott insulators. Introducing the Polyakov-loop parameter into an SU(2) gauge theory for the t-J model, we show that electron excitations emerge below the so-called coherence temperature, resulting from confinement of spinons and holons via the formation of the Polyakov loop. Remarkably, such confined electrons turn out to exhibit non-Fermi liquid physics without quantum criticality, yielding the electric resistivity in quantitative agreement with experimental data. Th…
Electronic structure has been studied in lightly electron doped correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We have observed coexistence of the lower Hubbard band and the in-gap band, the momentum dependence of the latter traces that of the band calculations without on-site Coulomb repulsion. The in-gap state remained anisotropically gapped in all observed momentum area, forming a remnant Fermi surface state, evolving towards the Fermi energy by carrier doping. These experimental results show a striking similarity with those observed in deeply un…
We studied two BaFe2-xNixAs2 (Ni-doped Ba-122) single crystals at two dfferent doping levels (underdoped and optimally doped) using an optical spectroscopic technique. The underdoped sample shows a magnetic phase transition around 80 K. We analyze the data with a Drude-Lorentz model with two Drude components (D1 and D2). It is known that the narrow D1 component originates from electron carriers in the electron-pockets and the broad D2 mode is from hole carriers in the hole-pockets. While the plasma frequencies of both Drude components and the static scattering rate of the broad D2 component sh…
The in-plane anisotropy of resistivity has been investigated for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$TM$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (TM-Ba122, TM$=$Cr, Mn, and Co) where the substitution sites are the same but the doped carriers are different for different TM elements. The Hall coefficient measurements indicated that hole carriers are effectively doped by Cr substitution but not by Mn substitution. It has been found that the resistivity difference $Δρ=ρ_{\rm b}-ρ_{\rm a}$ in the antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic (AFO) phase of Cr-Ba122 is initially positive but it turns to negative with increasing Cr content, whereas the positive…
