We investigate the alignment between outflow axes in nine of the youngest binary/multiple systems in the Perseus Molecular Cloud. These systems have typical member spacing larger than 1000 AU. For outflow identification, we use 12CO(2-1) and 12CO(3-2) data from a large survey with the Sub- millimeter Array: Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES). The distribution of outflow orientations in the binary pairs is consistent with random or preferentially anti-aligned distributions, demonstrating that these outflows are misaligned. This result suggests that these systems are possibly formed in environments where the distribution of angular momentum is complex and disordered, and these systems do not come from the same co-rotating structures or from an initial cloud with aligned vectors of angular momentum.
We present the full disk-fit results VANDAM survey of all Class 0 and I protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud. We have 18 new protostellar disk candidates around Class 0 and I sources, which are well described by a simple, parametrized disk model fit to the 8 mm VLA dust-continuum observations. 33% of Class 0 protostars and just 11% of Class I protostars have candidate disks, while 78% of Class 0 and I protostars do not have signs of disks within our 12 AU disk diameter resolution limit, indicating that at 8 mm most disks in the Class 0 and I phases are <10 AU in radius. These small radii …
Centimeter continuum emission from protostars offers insight into the innermost part of the outflows, as shock-ionized gas produces free-free emission. We observed a complete population of Class 0 and I protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud at 4.1 cm and 6.4 cm with resolution and sensitivity superior to previous surveys. From a total of 71 detections, 8 sources exhibit resolved emission at 4.1 cm and/or 6.4 cm. In this paper we focus on this sub-sample, analyzing their spectral indices along the jet, and their alignment with respect to the large-scale molecular outflow. Spectral indices f…
We present a multiplicity study of all known protostars (94) in the Perseus molecular cloud from a Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) survey at Ka-band (8 mm and 1 cm) and C-band (4 cm and 6.6 cm). The observed sample has a bolometric luminosity range between 0.1 L$_{\odot}$ and $\sim$33 L$_{\odot}$, with a median of 0.7 L$_{\odot}$. This multiplicity study is based on the Ka-band data, having a best resolution of $\sim$0.065" (15 AU) and separations out to $\sim$43" (10000 AU) can be probed. The overall multiplicity fraction (MF) is found to be of 0.40$\pm$0.06 and the companion star fract…
In the standard picture for low-mass star formation, a dense molecular cloud undergoes gravitational collapse to form a protostellar system consisting of a new central star, a circumstellar disk, and a surrounding envelope of remaining material. The mass distribution of the system evolves as matter accretes from the large-scale envelope through the disk and onto the protostar. While this general picture is supported by simulations and indirect observational measurements, the specific timescales related to disk growth and envelope dissipation remain poorly constrained. In this paper we conduct …
We present a comprehensive analysis on the evolution of envelopes surrounding protostellar systems in the Perseus molecular cloud using data from the MASSES survey. We focus our attention to the C$^{18}$O(2--1) spectral line, and we characterize the shape, size, and orientation of 54 envelopes and measure their fluxes, velocity gradients, and line widths. To look for evolutionary trends, we compare these parameters to the bolometric temperature Tbol, a tracer of protostellar age. We find evidence that the angular difference between the elongation angle of the C$^{18}$O envelope and the outflow…
We have performed a pointed survey of N2D+ 2-1 and N2D+ 3-2 emission toward 64 N2H+-bright starless and protostellar cores in the Perseus molecular cloud using the Arizona Radio Observatory Submillimeter Telescope and Kitt Peak 12 m telescope. We find a mean deuterium fractionation in N2H+, R_D = N(N2D+)/N(N2H+), of 0.08, with a maximum R_D = 0.2. In detected sources, we find no significant difference in the deuterium fractionation between starless and protostellar cores, nor between cores in clustered or isolated environments. We compare the deuterium fraction in N2H+ with parameters linked t…
Emission from protostars at centimeter radio wavelengths has been shown to trace the free-free emission arising from ionizing shocks as a result of jets and outflows driven by protostars. Therefore, measuring properties of protostars at radio frequencies can provide valuable insights into the nature of their outflows and jets. We present a C-band (4.1 cm and 6.4 cm) survey of all known protostars (Class 0 and Class I) in Perseus as part of the VLA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity (VANDAM) Survey. We examine the known correlations between radio flux density and protostellar parameters such as bolo…
We present the first dust emission results toward a sample of seven protostellar disk candidates around Class 0 and I sources in the Perseus molecular cloud from the VLA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity (VANDAM) survey with ~0.05'' or 12 AU resolution. To examine the surface brightness profiles of these sources, we fit the Ka-band 8 mm dust-continuum data in the u,v-plane to a simple, parametrized model based on the Shakura-Sunyaev disk model. The candidate disks are well-fit by a model with a disk-shaped profile and have masses consistent with known Class 0 and I disks. The inner-disk surface de…
We present 870 $μ$m ALMA dust polarization observations of 10 young Class 0/I protostars in the Perseus Molecular Cloud. At $\sim$ 0.35$"$ (80 au) resolution, all of our sources show some degree of polarization, with most (9/10) showing significantly extended emission in the polarized continuum. Each source has incredibly intricate polarization signatures. In particular, all three disk-candidates have polarization vectors roughly along the minor axis, which is indicative of polarization produced by dust scattering. On $\sim$ 100 au scales, the polarization is at a relatively low level ($\lesss…
We use PACS and SPIRE continuum data at 160 um, 250 um, 350 um, and 500 um from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey to sample seven clumps in Perseus: B1, B1-E, B5, IC348, L1448, L1455, and NGC1333. Additionally, we identify and characterize the embedded Class 0 protostars using detections of compact Herschel sources at 70 um as well as archival Spitzer catalogues and SCUBA 850 um photometric data. We identify 28 candidate Class 0 protostars, four of which are newly discovered sources not identified with Spitzer. We find that the star formation efficiency of clumps, as traced by Class 0 protostars,…
We investigate 35 pre-stellar cores and 36 proto-stellar cores in the Perseus molecular cloud. We find a very tight correlation between the physical parameters describing the N2H+ and NH3 gas. Both the velocity centroids and the line widths of N2H+ and NH3 correlate much better than either species correlates with CO, as expected if the nitrogen-bearing species are probing primarily the dense core gas where the CO has been depleted. We also find a tight correlation in the inferred abundance ratio between N2H+ and para-NH3 across all cores, with N(p-NH3)/N(N2H+)= 22 +/- 10. We find a mild correl…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of multiple protostar systems in the Perseus molecular cloud previously detected by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We observed 17 close ($<$600~AU separation) multiple systems at 1.3~mm in continuum and five molecular lines (i.e., \twco, \cateo, \thco, H$_2$CO, SO) to characterize the circum-multiple environments in which these systems are forming. We detect at least one component in the continuum for the 17 multiple systems. In three systems, one companion is not detected, and for two systems the companion…
There is substantial evidence for disk formation taking place during the early stages of star formation and for most stars being born in multiple systems; however, protostellar multiplicity and disk searches have been hampered by low resolution, sample bias, and variable sensitivity. We have conducted an unbiased, high-sensitivity Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) survey toward all known protostars (n = 94) in the Perseus molecular cloud (d~230 pc), with a resolution of ~15 AU (0.06") at 8 mm. We have detected candidate protostellar disks toward 17 sources (with 12 of those in the Class 0 …
We present the detection of fullerenes C60 and C70 in the star-forming region IC 348 of the Perseus molecular cloud. Mid-IR vibrational transitions of C60 and C70 in emission are found in Spitzer IRS spectra of individual stars (LRLL 1, 2, 58), in the averaged spectrum of three other cluster stars (LRLL 21, 31 and 67) and in spectra obtained at four interstellar locations distributed across the IC 348 region. Fullerene bands appear widely distributed in this region with higher strength in the lines-of-sight of stars at the core of the cluster. Emission features consistent with three most inten…
We present deep radio continuum observations of the cores identified as deeply embedded young stellar objects in the Perseus molecular cloud by the Spitzer c2d programme at a wavelength of 1.8 cm with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array (AMI-LA). We detect 72% of Class 0 objects from this sample and 31% of Class I objects. No starless cores are detected. We use the flux densities measured from these data to improve constraints on the correlations between radio luminosity and bolometric luminosity, infrared luminosity and, where measured, outflow force. We discuss the differing behavio…
We are conducting a Jansky VLA Ka-band (8 mm and 1 cm) and C-band (4 cm and 6.4 cm) survey of all known protostars in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, providing resolution down to $\sim$0.06'' and $\sim$0.35" in Ka-band and C-band, respectively. Here we present first results from this survey that enable us to examine the source NGC 1333 IRAS2A in unprecedented detail and resolve it into a proto-binary system separated by 0.621"$\pm$0.006" ($\sim$143 AU) at 8 mm, 1 cm, and 4 cm. These 2 sources (IRAS2A VLA1 and VLA2) are likely driving the two orthogonal outflows known to originate from IRAS2A. The…

We present results of 1.3 mm dust polarization observations toward 16 nearby, low-mass protostars, mapped with ~2.5" resolution at CARMA. The results show that magnetic fields in protostellar cores on scales of ~1000 AU are not tightly aligned with outflows from the protostars. Rather, the data are consistent with scenarios where outflows and magnetic fields are preferentially misaligned (perpendicular), or where they are randomly aligned. If one assumes that outflows emerge along the rotation axes of circumstellar disks, and that the outflows have not disrupted the fields in the surrounding m…
We report the results of an HCO+ (3-2) and N2D+ (3-2) molecular line survey performed toward 91 dense cores in the Perseus molecular cloud using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, to identify the fraction of starless and protostellar cores with systematic radial motions. We quantify the HCO+ asymmetry using a dimensionless asymmetry parameter $δ_v$, and identify 20 cores with significant blue or red line asymmetries in optically-thick emission indicative of collapsing or expanding motions, respectively. We separately fit the HCO+ profiles with an analytic collapse model and determine contracti…
Theoretically, misalignment between the magnetic field and rotational axis in a dense core is considered to be dynamically important in the star formation process, however, extent of this influence remains observationally unclear. For a sample of 32 Class 0 and I protostars in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, we analyzed gas motions using C$^{18}$O data from the SMA MASSES survey and the magnetic field structures using 850 $μ$m polarimetric data from the JCMT BISTRO-1 survey and archive. We do not find any significant correlation between the velocity gradients in the C$^{18}$O emission in the prot…
The protostellar outflows of wide-separation forming binaries frequently appear misaligned. We use magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the alignment of protostellar spin and molecular outflows for forming binary pairs. We show that the protostellar pairs, which form from turbulent fragmentation within a single parent core, have randomly oriented angular momenta. Although the pairs migrate to closer separations, their spins remain partially misaligned. We produce $^{12}$CO(2-1) synthetic observations of the simulations and characterize the outflow orientation in the emission maps. T…
We present new Submillimeter Array (SMA) observations of CO(2-1) outflows toward young, embedded protostars in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey. For 57 Perseus protostars, we characterize the orientation of the outflow angles and compare them with the orientation of the local filaments as derived from $Herschel$ observations. We find that the relative angles between outflows and filaments are inconsistent with purely parallel or purely perpendicular distributions. Instead, the observed distribution of o…
The majority of solar-type stars reside in multiple systems, especially binaries. They form in dense cores of molecular clouds that are observed to be significantly magnetized. Our previous study shows that magnetic braking can tighten the binary separation during the protostellar mass accretion phase by removing the angular momentum of the accreting material. Recent numerical calculations of single star formation have shown that misalignment between the magnetic field and rotation axis may weaken both magnetic braking and the associated magnetically driven outflows. These two effects allow fo…
We present a study on the impact of molecular outflows in the Perseus molecular cloud complex using the COMPLETE survey large-scale 12CO(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) maps. We used three-dimensional isosurface models generated in RA-DEC-Velocity space to visualize the maps. This rendering of the molecular line data allowed for a rapid and efficient way to search for molecular outflows over a large (~ 16 sq. deg.) area. Our outflow-searching technique detected previously known molecular outflows as well as new candidate outflows. Most of these new outflow-related high-velocity features lie in regions that…
Recent observations uncover various phenomena around the protostar such as misalignment between the outflow and magnetic field, precession of the jet, and time variability of the ejected clumps, whose origins are under debate. We perform a three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulation of the protostar formation in a star-forming core whose rotation axis is tilted at an angle $45^\circ$ with respect to the initial magnetic field, in which the protostar is resolved with a spatial resolution of $0.01\,$au. In low-dense outer region, the prestellar core contracts along the magnetic f…
We study the interactions between a protostar and its circumstellar disc under the influence of an external binary companion to determine the evolution of the mutual stellar spin - disc misalignment angle. The gravitational torque on the disc from an inclined binary makes the disc precess around the binary axis, while the star-disc interaction torque due to the rotation-induced quadrupole makes the stellar spin and the disc angular momentum axes precess around each other. A significant star-disc misalignment angle can be generated from a small initial value as the star-disc system evolves in t…
We present a study on the shells (and bubbles) in the Perseus molecular cloud using the COMPLETE survey large-scale 12CO(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) maps. The twelve shells reported here are spread throughout most of the Perseus cloud and have circular or arc-like morphologies with a range in radius of about 0.1 to 3 pc. Most of them have not been detected before most likely as maps of the region lacked the coverage and resolution needed to distinguish them. The majority of the shells are coincident with infrared nebulosity of similar shape and have a candidate powering source near the center. We sugge…
We report the ALMA Cycle 2 observations of the Class I binary protostellar system L1551 NE in the 0.9-mm continuum, C18O (3-2), 13CO (3-2), SO (7_8-6_7), and the CS (7-6) emission. At 0.18" (= 25 AU) resolution, ~4-times higher than that of our Cycle 0 observations, the circumbinary disk as seen in the 0.9-mm emission is shown to be comprised of a northern and a southern spiral arm, with the southern arm connecting to the circumstellar disk around Source B. The western parts of the spiral arms are brighter than the eastern parts, suggesting the presence of an m=1 spiral mode. In the C18O emiss…
To assess the potential role of magnetic fields in regulating the envelope rotation and the fragmentation of Class 0 protostars, we carried out observations of the dust polarized emission at 0.87 mm with the SMA, in the envelopes of a large sample of 20 Class 0 protostars. We estimate the mean magnetic field orientation over the central 1000 au envelope scales and compared it to that of the protostellar outflow in order to study the relation between their misalignment and the kinematics of the circumstellar gas. We discover a strong relationship between the misalignment of the magnetic field o…
Many protostellar gapped and binary discs show misalignments between their inner and outer discs; in some cases, $\sim70$ degree misalignments have been observed. Here we show that these misalignments can be generated through a "secular precession resonance" between the nodal precession of the inner disc and the precession of the gap-opening (stellar or massive planetary) companion. An evolving protostellar system may naturally cross this resonance during its lifetime due to disc dissipation and/or companion migration. If resonance crossing occurs on the right timescale, of order a few Myrs, c…
Star forming molecular clouds are observed to be both highly magnetized and turbulent. Consequently the formation of protostellar disks is largely dependent on the complex interaction between gravity, magnetic fields, and turbulence. Studies of non-turbulent protostellar disk formation with realistic magnetic fields have shown that these fields are efficient in removing angular momentum from the forming disks, preventing their formation. However, once turbulence is included, disks can form in even highly magnetized clouds, although the precise mechanism remains uncertain. Here we present sever…
Using resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulations, the propagation of protostellar jets, the formation of circumstellar discs and the configuration of magnetic fields are investigated from the prestellar cloud phase until $\sim$500 yr after protostar formation. As the initial state, we prepare magnetized rotating clouds, in which the rotation axis is misaligned with the global magnetic field by an angle $θ_0$. We calculate the cloud evolution for nine models with different $θ_0 (=$ 0, 5, 10, 30, 45, 60, 80, 85, 90$^\circ$). Our simulations show that there is no significant difference in the phy…
The formation of circumstellar disks is investigated using three-dimensional resistive magnetohydrodynamic simulations, in which the initial prestellar cloud has a misaligned rotation axis with respect to the magnetic field. We examine the effects of (i) the initial angle difference between the global magnetic field and the cloud rotation axis ($θ_0$) and (ii) the ratio of the thermal to gravitational energy ($α_0$). We study $16$ models in total and calculate the cloud evolution until $\sim \! 5000$ yr after protostar formation. Our simulation results indicate that an initial non-zero $θ_0$ (…
Dippers are a common class of young variable star exhibiting day-long dimmings with depths of up to several tens of percent. A standard explanation is that dippers host nearly edge-on (70 deg) protoplanetary discs that allow close-in (< 1 au) dust lifted slightly out of the midplane to partially occult the star. The identification of a face-on dipper disc and growing evidence of inner disc misalignments brings this scenario into question. Thus we uniformly (re)derive the inclinations of 24 dipper discs resolved with (sub-)mm interferometry from ALMA. We find that dipper disc inclinations are c…
The discovery of close in, giant planets (hot Jupiters) with orbital angular momentum vectors misaligned with respect to the rotation axis of their host stars presents problems for planet formation theories in which planets form in discs with angular momentum vectors aligned with that of the star. Violent, high eccentricity migration mechanisms purported to elevate planetary orbits above the natal disc plane predict populations of proto-hot Jupiters which have not been observed with Kepler. Alternative theories invoking primordial star-disc misalignments have recently received more attention. …
The presence of gaseous giant planets whose orbits lie in extreme proximity to their host stars ("hot Jupiters"), can largely be accounted for by planetary migration, associated with viscous evolution of proto-planetary nebulae. Recently, observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect during planetary transits have revealed that a considerable fraction of detected hot Jupiters reside on orbits that are misaligned with respect to the spin-axes of their host stars. This observational fact has cast significant doubts on the importance of disk-driven migration as a mechanism for production of hot …
The presence of giant gaseous planets that reside in close proximity to their host stars may be a consequence of large-scale radial migration through the proto-planetary nebulae. Within the context of this picture, significant orbital obliquities characteristic of a substantial fraction of such planets can be attributed to external torques that perturb the disks out of alignment with the spin axes of their host stars. Therefore, the acquisition of orbital obliquity exhibits sensitive dependence on the physics of disk-star interactions. Here, we analyze the primordial excitation of spin-orbit m…
Shadows in scattered light images of protoplanetary disks are a common feature and support the presence of warps or misalignments between disk regions. These warps are possibly due to an inclined (sub-)stellar companion embedded in the disk. We study the morphology of the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 139614 based on the first scattered light observations of this disk, which we model with the radiative transfer code MCMax3D. We obtained J- and H-band observations in polarized scattered light with VLT/SPHERE that show strong azimuthal asymmetries. In the outer disk, beyond ~3…
