In this paper, we present a generalisation of a theorem of David and Rob Pollack. In 'A construction of rigid analytic cohomology classes for congruence subgroups of SL(3,Z)', they give a very general argument for lifting ordinary eigenclasses (with respect to a suitable operator) in the group cohomology of certain arithmetic groups. With slightly tighter conditions, we prove the same result for non-ordinary classes. Pollack and Pollack apply their results to the case of p-ordinary classes in the group cohomology of congruence subgroups for SL3, constructing explicit overconvergent classes in this setting. As an application of our results, we give an extension of their results to the case of non-critical slope classes in the same setting.
We use the theta lift to study the multiplicity with which certain automorphic representations of cohomological type occur in a family of congruence covers of an arithmetic manifold. When the family of covers is a so-called `p-adic congruence tower' we obtain sharp asymptotics for the number of representations which occur as lifts. When combined with theorems on the surjectivity of the theta lift due to Howe and Li, and Bergeron, Millson and Moeglin, this allows us to verify certain cases of a conjecture of Sarnak and Xue.
We prove a non-minimal modularity lifting theorem for ordinary Galois representations over imaginary quadratic fields, conditional on a local-global compatibility conjecture for ordinary torsion classes.
We study the $Λ$-module structure of the ordinary parts of the arithmetic cohomology groups of modular Jacobians made out of various towers of modular curves. We prove that the ordinary parts of $Λ$-adic Selmer groups coming from two different towers have "almost same" $Λ$-module structures. We also prove the cotorsionness of $Λ$-adic Tate-Shafarevich group under mild assumptions.
In a previous paper [CG], we showed how one could generalize Taylor-Wiles modularity lifting theorems [Wil95, TW95] to contexts beyond those in which the automorphic forms in question arose from the middle degree cohomology of Shimura varieties, in particular, to contexts in which the relevant automorphic forms contributed to cohomology in exactly two degrees. In this sequel, we extend our method to the general case in which Galois representations are expected to occur in cohomology, contingent on the (as yet unproven) existence of certain Galois representations with the expected properties. A…
We study the derived Hecke action at $p$ on the ordinary $p$-adic cohomology of arithmetic subgroups of semisimple groups $\mathrm G(\mathbb Q)$, i.e., we study the derived version of Hida's theory for ordinary Hecke algebras. This is the analog at $\ell=p$ of derived Hecke actions studied by Venkatesh in the tame case. We show that properties of the derived Hecke action at $p$ are related to deep conjectures in Galois cohomology which are higher analogs of the classical Leopoldt conjecture.
We prove automorphy lifting results for certain essentially conjugate self-dual $p$-adic Galois representations $ρ$ over CM imaginary fields $F$, which satisfy in particular that $p$ splits in $F$, and that the restriction of $ρ$ on any decomposition group above $p$ is reducible with all the Jordan-Hölder factors of dimension at most $2$. We also show some results on Breuil's locally analytic socle conjecture in certain non-trianguline case. The main results are obtained by establishing an $R=\mathbb{T}$-type result over the $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$-ordinary families considered by Breuil-…
Given a continuous ordinary Galois representation $\barρ:G_{\mathbb{Q}_p}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_n(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$, Breuil and Herzig constructed an admissible smooth $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$-representation $Π(\barρ)^{\mathrm{ord}}$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ and showed that it occurs in certain globally defined mod $p$ cohomology spaces. By applying Taylor-Wiles patching to spaces of ordinary automorphic representations we prove that the indecomposable pieces of $Π(\barρ)^{\mathrm{ord}}$ each occur with the same multiplicity at a well-chosen tame level.
We give a new method for solving a problem originally solved about 20 years ago by Sinnott and Kubert, namely that of computing the cohomology of the universal ordinary distribution with respect to the action of the two-element group generated by complex conjugation. We develop the method in sufficient generality so as to be able to calculate analogous cohomology groups in the function field setting which have not previously been calculated. In particular, we are able to confirm a conjecture of L.~S.~Yin conditional on which Yin was able to obtain results on unit indices generalizing those of …
Under mild hypotheses, we prove that if F is a totally real field, k is the algebraic closure of the finite field with l elements and r : G_F --> GL_2(k) is irreducible and modular, then there is a finite solvable totally real extension F'/F such that r|_{G_F'} has a modular lift which is ordinary at each place dividing l. We deduce a similar result for r itself, under the assumption that at places v|l the representation r|_{G_F_v} is reducible. This allows us to deduce improvements to results in the literature on modularity lifting theorems for potentially Barsotti-Tate representations and th…
We consider lifting of mod p representations to mod p^2 representations in the setting of representations of (i) finite groups; (ii) absolute Galois groups of abstract fields; and (iii) absolute Galois groups of local and global fields.
We construct the $Λ$-adic de Rham analogue of Hida's ordinary $Λ$-adic étale cohomology and of Ohta's $Λ$-adic Hodge cohomology, and by exploiting the geometry of integral models of modular curves over the cyclotomic extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, we give a purely geometric proof of the expected finiteness, control, and $Λ$-adic duality theorems. Following Ohta, we then prove that our $Λ$-adic module of differentials is canonically isomorphic to the space of ordinary $Λ$-adic cuspforms. In the sequel to this paper, we construct the crystalline counterpart to Hida's ordinary $Λ$-adic étale cohomo…
For any odd squarefree integer r, we get complete description of the G_r=Gal(Q(mu_r)/Q) group cohomology of the universal ordinary distribution U_r in this paper. Moreover, if M is a fixed integer which divides l-1 for all prime factors l of r, we study the cohomology group H^{*}(G_r, U_r/MU_r). In particular, we explain the mysterious construction of the elements kappa_{r'} for r'|r in Rubin's construction of Kolyvagin elements, which come exactly from a certain Z/M Z-basis of the cohomology group H^{0}(G_r, U_r/MU_r) through an evaluation map.
We use vanishing results for sheaf cohomology on Siegel modular varieties to study two lifting problems: (a) When can Siegel modular forms (mod p) be lifted to characteristic zero? This uses and extends previous results for cusp forms by Stroh and Lan-Suh. (b) When is the restriction of Siegel modular forms to the boundary of the moduli space a surjective map? We investigate this question in arbitrary characteristic, generalising analytic results of Weissauer and Arakawa.
Let $G'$ be a connected reductive group over $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $G = G'/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is quasi-split, and let $Q \subset G$ be a parabolic subgroup. We introduce parahoric overconvergent cohomology groups with respect to $Q$, and prove a classicality theorem showing that the small slope parts of these groups coincide with those of classical cohomology. This allows the use of overconvergent cohomology at parahoric, rather than Iwahoric, level, and provides flexible lifting theorems that appear to be particularly well-adapted to arithmetic applications. When $Q$ is the Borel, we recover the …
This paper contains both theoretical results and experimental data on the behavior of the dimensions of the cohomology spaces H^1(G,E_n), where Gamma is a lattice in SL(2,C) and E_n is one of the standard self-dual modules. In the case Gamma = SL(2,O) for the ring of integers O in an imaginary quadratic number field, we make the theory of lifting explicit and obtain lower bounds linear in n. We have accumulated a large amount of experimental data in this case, as well as for some geometrically constructed and mostly non-arithmetic groups. The computations for SL(2,O) lead us to discover two in…
This paper treats what we call `weak geometric liftings' of Galois representations associated to abelian varieties. This notion can be seen as a generalization of the idea of lifting a Galois representation along an isogeny of algebraic groups. The weaker notion only takes into account an isogeny of the derived groups and disregards the centres of the groups in question. The weakly lifted representations are required to be geometric in the sense of a conjecture of Fontaine and Mazur. The conjecture in question states that any irreducible geometric representation is a twist of a subquotient of …
We prove analogues of the major algebraic results of Greenberg-Vatsal for Selmer groups of $p$-ordinary newforms over $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extensions which may be neither cyclotomic nor anticyclotomic, under a number of technical hypotheses, including a cotorsion assumption on the Selmer groups. The main complication which arises in our work is the possible presence of finite primes which can split completely in the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-extension being considered, resulting in the local cohomology groups that appear in the definition of the Selmer groups being significantly larger than they are in the cas…

In this article we prove a semistable version of the variational Tate conjecture for divisors in crystalline cohomology, stating that a rational (logarithmic) line bundle on the special fibre of a semistable scheme over $k [\![ t ]\!]$ lifts to the total space if and only if its first Chern class does. The proof is elementary, using standard properties of the logarithmic de Rham-Witt complex. As a corollary, we deduce similar algebraicity lifting results for cohomology classes on varieties over global function fields. Finally, we give a counter example to show that the variational Tate conject…
We construct Λ-adic de Rham and crystalline analogues of Hida's ordinary Λ-adic etale cohomology, and by exploiting the geometry of integral models of modular curves over the cyclotomic extension of \Q_p, we prove appropriate finiteness and control theorems in each case. We then employ integral p-adic Hodge theory to prove Λ-adic comparison isomorphisms between our cohomologies and Hida's etale cohomology. As applications of our work, we provide a "cohomological" construction of the family of (ϕ,Γ)-modules attached to Hida's ordinary Λ-adic etale cohomology by Dee, and we give a new and purely…
We show that crystals with the properties of crystalline cohomology of ordinary Calabi-Yau threefolds in characteristic p>0, exhibit a remarkable similarity with the well known structure on the cohomology of complex Calabi-Yau threefolds near a boundary point of the moduli space with maximal unipotent local monodromy. In particular, there are canonical coordinates and an analogue of the prepotential of the Yukawa coupling. Moreover we show p-adic analogues of the integrality properties for the canonical coordinates and the prepotential of the Yukawa coupling, which have been observed in the ex…
We prove that certain p-adic Banach representations, associated to local ordinary Galois representations, constructed by Breuil and Herzig appears in the completed cohomology of a definite unitary group in three variables. This confirms part of their conjecture. Our main technique is making use of p-adic automorphic forms for definite unitary groups and the eigenvarieties which parameterize them.
On the classicality theorem and its applications to the automorphy lifting theorem and the Breuil-M$\mathrm{\acute{e}}$zard conjecture in some $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q}_{p^2})$ cases
We prove the existence of noncrossed product and indecomposable division algebras over the function field of a smooth p-adic curve, especially when the curve does not admit a smooth model over Z_p. Thus we generalize arXiv 0907.0670. To make our constructions, we investigate the lifting of cohomology classes from the total fraction ring of the closed fiber to the function field of the curve, over an arbitrary discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic.
