Accretion onto central massive black holes in galaxies is often modelled with the Bondi solution. In this paper we study a generalization of the classical Bondi accretion theory, considering the additional effects of the gravitational potential of the host galaxy, and of electron scattering in the optically thin limit. We provide a general analysis of the bias in the estimates of the Bondi radius and mass accretion rate, when adopting as fiducial values for the density and temperature at infinity the values of these quantities measured at finite distance from the central black hole. We also give general formulae to compute the correction terms of the critical accretion parameter in relevant asymptotic regimes. A full analytical discussion is presented in the case of an Hernquist galaxy, when the problem reduces to the discussion of a cubic equation, therefore allowing for more than one critical point in the accretion structure. The results are useful for observational works (especially in the case of low-luminosity systems), as well as for numerical simulations, where accretion rates are usually defined in terms of the gas properties near the
Hermann Bondi's 1952 paper "On spherically symmetrical accretion" is recognized as one of the foundations of accretion theory. Although Bondi later remarked that it was "not much more than an examination exercise", his mathematical analysis of spherical accretion on to a point mass has found broad use across fields of astrophysics that were embryonic or non-existent at the time of the paper's publication. In this non-technical review, I describe the motivations for Bondi's work, and briefly discuss some of the applications of Bondi accretion in high energy astrophysics, galaxy formation, and s…
(Abridged) We propose a new method to estimate the Bondi (hot gas) accretion rates, \dot M_B, onto the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centres of elliptical galaxies. It can be applied even if the Bondi radius is not well-resolved in X-ray observations. This method is based on two simple assumptions: (1) hot gas outside the Bondi radius is in nearly a hydrostatic equilibrium, and (2) the gas temperature near the galaxy centre is close to the virial temperature. We apply this method to 28 bright elliptical galaxies in nearby galaxy clusters (27 of them are the brightest cluster galaxies…
The fully analytical solution for isothermal Bondi accretion on a black hole (MBH) at the center of JJ two-component Jaffe (1983) galaxy models is presented. In JJ models the stellar and total mass density distributions are described by the Jaffe profile, with different scale-lengths and masses, and to which a central MBH is added; all the relevant stellar dynamical properties can also be derived analytically. In these new accretion solutions the hydrodynamical and stellar dynamical properties are linked by imposing that the gas temperature is proportional to the virial temperature of the stel…
The fully analytical solution for isothermal Bondi accretion on a black hole (MBH) at the center of two-component Jaffe (1983) galaxy models is presented. In a previous work we provided the analytical expressions for the critical accretion parameter and the radial profile of the Mach number in the case of accretion on a MBH at the center of a spherically symmetric one-component Jaffe galaxy model. Here we apply this solution to galaxy models where both the stellar and total mass density distributions are described by the Jaffe profile, with different scale-lengths and masses, and to which a ce…
Spherical Bondi accretion is used in astrophysics as an approximation to investigate many types of accretion processes. Two-phase accretion flows that transition from neutral to ionized have observational support in high-mass star formation, and have application to accretion flows around any ionizing source, but the hydrodynamic stability of two-phase Bondi accretion is not understood. With both semi-analytic and fully numerical methods we find that these flows may be stable, conditionally stable or unstable depending on the initial conditions. The transition from an R-type to a D-type ionizat…
The classic Bondi solution remains a common starting point both for studying black hole growth across cosmic time in cosmological simulations and for smaller scale simulations of AGN feedback. In nature, however, there will be inhomogenous distributions of rotational velocity and density along the outer radius ($R_o$) marking the sphere of influence of a black hole. While there have been many studies of how the Bondi solution changes with a prescribed angular momentum boundary condition, they have all assumed a constant density at $R_o$. In this Letter, we show that a non-uniform density at $R…
Gas undergoing Bondi accretion onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH) becomes hotter toward smaller radii. We searched for this signature with a Chandra observation of the hot gas in NGC 3115, which optical observations show has a very massive SMBH. Our analysis suggests that we are resolving, for the first time, the accretion flow within the Bondi radius of an SMBH. We show that the temperature is rising toward the galaxy center as expected in all accretion models in which the black hole is gravitationally capturing the ambient gas. There is no hard central point source that could cause such a…
Whilst in galaxy-size simulations, supermassive black holes (SMBH) are entirely handled by sub-grid algorithms, computational power now allows the accretion radius of such objects to be resolved in smaller scale simulations. In this paper, we investigate the impact of resolution on two commonly used SMBH sub-grid algorithms; the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) formula for accretion onto a point mass, and the related estimate of the drag force exerted onto a point mass by a gaseous medium. We find that when the accretion region around the black hole scales with resolution, and the BHL formula is ev…

An isolated star moving supersonically through a uniform gas accretes material from its gravitationally-induced wake. The rate of accretion is set by the accretion radius of the star and is well-described by classical Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton theory. Stars, however, are not born in isolation. They form in clusters where they accrete material that is influenced by all the stars in the cluster. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of clusters of individual accretors embedded in a uniform-density wind in order to study how the accretion rates experienced by individual cluster member…
We present deep (250 ks) Chandra observations of the nearby galaxy group NGC 1600, which has at its centre an ultramassive black hole (17$\pm$1.5 billion M$_{\odot}$). The exceptionally large mass of the black hole coupled with its low redshift makes it one of only a handful of black holes for which spatially resolved temperature and density profiles can be obtained within the Bondi radius with the high spatial resolution of Chandra. We analyzed the hot gas properties within the Bondi accretion radius R$_B$=1.2" - 1.7"= 0.38 - 0.54 kpc. Within a $\sim\!3$ kpc radius, we find two temperature co…
Isolated massive elliptical galaxies, or that are present at the center of cool-core clusters, are believed to be powered by hot gas accretion directly from their surrounding hot X-ray emitting gaseous medium. This leads to a giant Bondi-type spherical/quasi-spherical accretion flow onto their host SMBHs, with the accretion flow region extending well beyond the Bondi radius. In this work, we present a detailed study of Bondi-type spherical flow in the context of these massive ellipticals by incorporating the effect of entire gravitational potential of the host galaxy in the presence of cosmolo…
The recent advanced LIGO/Virgo detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from stellar binary black hole (BBH) mergers, in particular GW190521, which is potentially associated with a quasar, have stimulated renewed interest in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) as factories of merging BBHs. Compact objects evolving from massive stars are unavoidably enshrouded by a massive envelope to form accretion-modified stars (AMSs) in the dense gaseous environment of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion disk. We show that most AMSs form binaries due to gravitational interaction with each other during radia…

Accretion rates and radiative efficiencies of Sagittarius A* and nearby supermassive black holes estimated using empirical relations: Implications for accretion models
The mass accretion rate of transonic spherical accretion flow onto compact objects such as black holes is known as the Bondi accretion rate(Mdot_B), which is determined only by the density and the temperature of gas at the outer boundary. But most work on disc accretion has taken the mass flux to be a given with the relation between that parameter and external conditions left uncertain. Within the framework of a slim alpha disk, we have constructed global solutions of the rotating, viscous hot accretion flow and determined its mass accretion rate as a function of density, temperature, and angu…
We develop an analytic, steady-state model for the gas environment in quiescent galactic nuclei. We assume that the mass is constantly supplied by a spherically symmetric distribution of wind emitting stars, and that gravity is solely due to a central supermassive black hole. We show that at some finite radius, where the Keplerian velocity is comparable to the wind velocity, the bulk velocity vanishes. Matter generated below that radius will be accreted onto the black hole, while matter outside it will escape the system. Under certain conditions, the flow may become supersonic at both domains.…
In many investigations involving accretion on a central point mass, ranging from observational studies to cosmological simulations, including semi-analytical modelling, the classical Bondi accretion theory is the standard tool widely adopted. Previous works generalised the theory to include the effects of the gravitational field of the galaxy hosting a central black hole, and of electron scattering in the optically thin limit. Here we apply this extended Bondi problem, in the general polytropic case, to a class of new two-component galaxy models recently presented. In these models, a Jaffe ste…
By means of a one-zone evolutionary model, we study the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies, as a function of the accretion radiative efficiency, dark matter content, and cosmological infall of gas. In particular, the radiation feedback is computed by using the self-regulated Bondi accretion. The models are characterized by strong oscillations when the galaxy is in the AGN state with a high accretion luminosity. We found that these one-zone models are able to reproduce two important phases of galaxy evolution, namely an obscured-cold phase when the bulk of star for…
We present three-dimensional calculations of spherically symmetric Bondi accretion onto a stationary supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass $10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$ within a radial range of $0.02-10$ pc, using a modified version of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) \gad \sp code, which ensures approximate first-order consistency (i.e., second-order accuracy) for the particle approximation. First-order consistency is restored by allowing the number of neighbours, $n_{\rm neigh}$, and the smoothing length, $h$, to vary with the total number of particles, $N$, such that the asymptotic limits …
Mass accretion rate is a key parameter in accretion disk theory. It determines black hole accretion mode. In large scale cosmological simulations studying galaxy formation and evolution, Bondi radius can at most be marginally resolved. In those simulations, Bondi accretion formula is always used to estimate black hole accretion rate. Bondi solution is too simple, which cannot represent the real accretion process. We perform simulations of hot accretion flow at parsec scale irradiated by a low luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN). We perform 77 simulations with varying density and temperatu…
We investigate the general stability of 1D spherically symmetric ionized Bondi accretion onto a massive object in the specific context of accretion onto a young stellar object. We first derive a new analytic expression for a steady state two temperature solution that predicts the existence of compact and hypercompact HII regions. We then show that this solution is only marginally stable if ionization is treated self-consistently. This leads to a recurring collapse of the HII region over time. We derive a semi-analytic model to explain this instability, and test it using spatially converged 1D …
Recently, an exact spherically symmetric analytic accretion solution was presented having simple $ρ\propto R^{-3/2}$ and $V \propto R^{-1/2}$ scalings in Hernandez et al. (2023). In dimensionless variables that solution forms a one-parameter family of solutions ranging from an empty free-fall solution to a hydrostatic equilibrium configuration. This power-law solution is characterised by a constant Mach number for the flow, which can vary from zero to infinity as a function of the one parameter of the solution, and has an accretion density profile which naturally goes to zero at large radii. T…
We consider the spike mass density profile in a dark halo by self-consistently solving the relativistic Bondi accretion of dark matter onto a non-spining black hole of mass $M$. We assume that the dominant component of the dark matter in the halo is a Standard model gauge-singlet scalar. Its mass $m\simeq 10^{-5}{\rm eV}$ and quartic self-coupling $λ\lesssim10^{-19}$ are constrained to be compatible with the properties of galactic dark halos. In the hydrodynamic limit, we find that the accretion rate is bounded from below, $\dot{M}_{\rm min}=96πG^2M^2 m^4/λ\hbar^3$. Therefore, for $M=10^6~{\rm…
Accretion onto a supermassive black hole of a rotating inflow is a particularly difficult problem to study because of the wide range of length scales involved. There have been broadly utilized analytic and numerical treatments of the global properties of accretion flows, but detailed numerical simulations are required to address certain critical aspects. We use the ZEUS code to run hydrodynamical simulations of rotating, axisymmetric accretion flows with Bremsstrahlung cooling, considering solutions for which the centrifugal balance radius significantly exceeds the Schwarzschild radius, with a…
We present an exact $γ=5/3$ spherical accretion solution which modifies the Bondi boundary condition of $ρ\to const.$ as $r\to \infty$ to $ρ\to 0$ as $r \to \infty$. This change allows for simple power law solutions on the density and infall velocity fields, ranging from a cold empty free-fall condition where pressure tends to zero, to a hot hydrostatic equilibrium limit with no infall velocity. As in the case of the Bondi solution, a maximum accretion rate appears. As in the $γ=5/3$ case of the Bondi solution, no sonic radius appears, this time however, because the flow is always characterise…
Compact objects are expected to exist in the accretion disks of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), and in the presence of such a dense environment ($\sim 10^{14}\,{\rm cm^{-3}}$), they will form a new kind of stellar population denoted as Accretion-Modified Stars (AMSs). This hypothesis is supported by recent LIGO/Virgo detection of the mergers of very high-mass stellar binary black holes (BHs). We show that the TZOs will be trapped by the SMBH-disk within a typical AGN lifetime. In the context of SMBH-disks, the rates of Bondi accretion onto BHs are $\sim 10^{9…
The early-type galaxy NGC 3115, at a distance of 10.2 Mpc, hosts the nearest billion-solar-mass black hole. Wong et al. recently inferred a substantial Bondi accretion rate near the black hole. Bondi-like accretion is thought to fuel outflows, which can be traced through their radio emission. This paper reports the discovery of a radio nucleus in NGC 3115, with a diameter less that 0.17 arcsec (8.4 pc), a luminosity at 8.5 GHz of 3.1 x 10^35 ergs/s and a flat spectrum (alpha = -0.23+/-0.20, flux density ~ frequency^alpha). The radio source coincides with the galaxy's photocenter and candidate …
Black holes (BHs) are believed to be a key ingredient of galaxy formation. However, the galaxy-BH interplay is challenging to study due to the large dynamical range and complex physics involved. As a consequence, hydrodynamical cosmological simulations normally adopt sub-grid models to track the unresolved physical processes, in particular BH accretion; usually the spatial scale where the BH dominates the hydrodynamical processes (the Bondi radius) is unresolved, and an approximate Bondi-Hoyle accretion rate is used to estimate the growth of the BH. By comparing hydrodynamical simulations at d…
Essentially all stars form in giant molecular clouds (GMCs). However, inside GMCs, most of the gas does not participate in star formation; rather, denser gas accumulates in clumps in the GMC, with the bulk of the stars in a given GMC forming in a few of the most massive clumps. In the Milky Way, these clumps have masses $M_{\rm cl}\lesssim 5\times 10^{-2}$ of the GMC, radii $r_{\rm cl} \sim 1$pc, and free-fall times $τ_{\rm cl} \sim 2\times 10^5\yr$. We show that clumps inside giant molecular clouds should accrete at a modified Bondi accretion rate, which depends on clump mass as $\dot M_{\rm …
Binary stars often move through an ambient medium from which they accrete material and angular momentum, as in triple-star systems, star-forming clouds, young globular clusters and in the centres of galaxies. A binary form of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion results whereby the accretion rate depends on the binary properties: the stellar masses and separation, and the relative wind speed. We present the results of simulations performed with the hydrodynamic code GANDALF, to determine the mass accretion rates over a range of binary separations, inclinations and mass ratios. When the binary separ…
We report on a series of numerical simulations of gas clouds with self-gravity forming sink particles, adopting an isothermal equation of state to isolate the effects of gravity from thermal physics on the resulting sink mass distributions. Simulations starting with supersonic velocity fluctuations develop sink mass functions with a high-mass power-law tail $dN/d\log M \propto M^Γ$, $Γ= -1 \pm 0.1$, independent of the initial Mach number of the velocity field. Similar results but with weaker statistical significance hold for a simulation starting with initial density fluctuations. This mass fu…
We analyse the environment of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the centre of a massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster, hosting the radio source 3C 84. We focus on the young radio lobe observed inside the estimated Bondi accretion radius. We discuss the momentum balance between the jet associated with the lobe and the surrounding gas. The results are compared with the proper motion of the radio lobe obtained with the very long baseline interferometry. We find that under assumption of a high-density environment >~ 100 cm^-3), the jet power must be comparable to the Edding…
Accretion on to seed black holes (BHs) is believed to play a crucial role in formation of supermassive BHs observed at high-redshift (z>6). Here, we investigate the combined effect of gas angular momentum and radiation feedback on the accretion flow, by performing 2D axially symmetric radiation hydrodynamics simulations that solve the flow structure across the Bondi radius and the outer part of the accretion disc simultaneously. The accreting gas with finite angular momentum forms a rotationally-supported disc inside the Bondi radius, where the accretion proceeds by the angular momentum transp…
We study the gas accretion onto a supermassive black hole (SMBH) using the 3D SPH code GADGET-3 on scales of 0.1-200 pc. First we test our code with spherically symmetric, adiabatic Bondi accretion problem. We find that our simulation can reproduce the expected Bondi accretion flow very well for a limited amount of time until the effect of outer boundary starts to be visible. We also find artificial heating of gas near the inner accretion boundary due to the artificial viscosity of SPH. Second, we implement radiative cooling and heating due to X-rays, and examine the impact of thermal feedback…
We argue that one of the basic assumptions of the Bondi accretion process, that the accreting object has zero pressure, might not hold in many galaxies because of the pressure exerted by stellar winds of star orbiting the central super massive black hole (SMBH). Hence, the Bondi accretion cannot be used in these cases, such as in the galaxy NGC 3115. The winds of these high-velocity stars are shocked to temperatures above the virial temperature of the galaxy, leading to the formation of a hot bubble of size ~0.1-10 pc near the center. This hot bubble can substantially reduce the mass accretion…
The early growth of black holes (BHs) in high-redshift galaxies is likely regulated by their feedback on the surrounding gas. While radiative feedback has been extensively studied, the role of mechanical feedback has received comparatively less scrutiny to date. Here we use high-resolution parsec-scale hydrodynamical simulations to study jet propagation and its effect on BH accretion onto 100 ${\rm M_\odot}$ BHs in the dense, low-metallicity gas expected in early protogalaxies. As the jet propagates, it shocks the surrounding gas and forms a jet cocoon. The cocoon consists of a rapidly-cooling…
We study the properties of rotating accretion flows onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using axisymmetric two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations with radiative cooling and BH feedback. The simulations resolve the accretion dynamics of gas outside from the BH influence radius through an inner accretion disk. For lower Bondi accretion rates in units of the Eddington rate ($\dot{M}_{\rm B}\ll 10^{-3}~\dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$), the BH feeding is suppressed due to turbulent motion by several orders of magnitudes from the Bondi rate. Thus, the radiative luminosity results in as low as $\sim 10^{-10…
In regions of star formation, protostars and newborn stars accrete mass from their natal clouds. These clouds are threaded by magnetic fields with a strength characterized by the plasma beta---the ratio of thermal and magnetic pressures. Observations show molecular clouds have beta <= 1, so magnetic fields can play a significant role in the accretion process. We have carried out a numerical study of the effect of large-scale magnetic fields on the rate of accretion onto a uniformly moving point particle from a uniform, non-self-gravitating, isothermal gas. We consider gas moving with sonic Mac…

Black holes are believed to be one of the key ingredients of galaxy formation models, but it has been notoriously challenging to simulate them due to the very complex physics and large dynamical range of spatial scales involved. Here we address a significant shortcoming of a Bondi-Hoyle-like prescription commonly invoked to estimate black hole accretion in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation, namely that the Bondi-Hoyle radius is frequently unresolved. We describe and implement a novel super-Lagrangian refinement scheme to increase, adaptively and 'on the fly', the mass a…
The Galactic Center black hole Sgr A* is the archetypical example of an underfed massive black hole. The extremely low accretion rate can be understood in radiatively inefficient accretion flow models. Testing those models has proven to be difficult due to the lack of suitable probes. Radio and submm polarization measurements constrain the flow very close to the event horizon. X-ray observations resolving the Bondi radius yield an estimate roughly four orders of magnitude further out. Here, we present a new, indirect measurement of the accretion flow density at intermediate radii. We use the d…

Discovery of high-redshift (z > 6) supermassive black holes (BHs) may indicate that the rapid (or super-Eddington) gas accretion has aided their quick growth. Here, we study such rapid accretion of the primordial gas on to intermediate-mass (10^2 - 10^5 M_sun) BHs under anisotropic radiation feedback. We perform two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations that solve the flow structure across the Bondi radius, from far outside of the Bondi radius down to a central part which is larger than a circum-BH accretion disc. The radiation from the unresolved circum-BH disc is analytically model…
