The frog model starts with one active particle at the root of a graph and some number of dormant particles at all nonroot vertices. Active particles follow independent random paths, waking all inactive particles they encounter. We prove that certain frog model statistics are monotone in the initial configuration for two nonstandard stochastic dominance relations: the increasing concave and the probability generating function orders.
This extends many canonical theorems. We connect recurrence for random initial configurations to recurrence for deterministic configurations. Also, the limiting shape of activated sites on the integer lattice respects both of these orders. Other implications include monotonicity results on transience of the frog model where the number of frogs per vertex decays away from the origin, on survival of the frog model with death, and on the time to visit a given vertex in any frog model.
The frog model is a stochastic model for the spreading of an epidemic on a graph, in which a dormant particle starts to perform a simple random walk on the graph and to awake other particles, once it becomes active. We study two versions of the frog model on the complete graph with $N + 1$ vertices. In the first version we consider, active particles have geometrically distributed lifetimes. In the second version, the displacement of each awakened particle lasts until it hits a vertex already visited by the process. For each model, we prove that as $N \to \infty$, the trajectory of the process …
We examine a system of interacting random walks with leftward drift on $\mathbb{Z}$, which begins with a single active particle at the origin and some distribution of inactive particles on the positive integers. Inactive particles become activated when landed on by other particles, and all particles beginning at the same point posses equal leftward drift. Once activated, the trajectories of distinct particles are independent. This system belongs to a broader class of problems involving interacting random walks on rooted graphs, referred to collectively as the frog model. Additional conditions …
The frog model on the rooted d-ary tree changes from transient to recurrent as the number of frogs per site is increased. We prove that the location of this transition is on the same order as the degree of the tree.
Consider the following interacting particle system on the $d$-ary tree, known as the frog model: Initially, one particle is awake at the root and i.i.d. Poisson many particles are sleeping at every other vertex. Particles that are awake perform simple random walks, awakening any sleeping particles they encounter. We prove that there is a phase transition between transience and recurrence as the initial density of particles increases, and we give the order of the transition up to a logarithmic factor.

Let $W^{(n)}$ be the $n$-letter word obtained by repeating a fixed word $W$, and let $R_n$ be a random $n$-letter word over the same alphabet. We show several results about the length of the longest common subsequence (LCS) between $W^{(n)}$ and $R_n$; in particular, we show that its expectation is $γ_W n-O(\sqrt{n})$ for an efficiently-computable constant $γ_W$. This is done by relating the problem to a new interacting particle system, which we dub "frog dynamics". In this system, the particles (`frogs') hop over one another in the order given by their labels. Stripped of the labeling, the fr…
We study how the recurrence and transience of space-time sets for a branching random walk on a graph depends on the offspring distribution. Here, we say that a space-time set $A$ is recurrent if it is visited infinitely often almost surely on the event that the branching random walk survives forever, and say that $A$ is transient if it is visited at most finitely often almost surely. We prove that if $μ$ and $ν$ are supercritical offspring distributions with means $\bar μ< \bar ν$ then every space-time set that is recurrent with respect to the offspring distribution $μ$ is also recurrent with …
In this paper, we consider the problem of order preservation under addition and multiplication operators over the vector space of univariate real-valued random variables. Consistent with the case of usual order over the real numbers-as constant random variables, we prove that the usual stochastic order is both additive and multiplicative. We additionally discuss the situation for nine extra univariate stochastic orders presenting counterexamples in some cases. The problem remains unsolved for other univariate stochastic orders.
The article is devoted to the integration order replacement technique for iterated Ito stochastic integrals and iterated stochastic integrals with respect to martingales. We consider the class of iterated Ito stochastic integrals, for which with probability 1 the formulas of integration order replacement corresponding to the rules of classical integral calculus are reasonable. The theorems on integration order replacement for the class of iterated Ito stochastic integrals is proven. Many examples of this theorems usage have been considered. These results are generalized for the class of iterat…
In this short note, we prove that the stochastic order of Radon probability measures on any ordered topological space is antisymmetric. This has been known before in various special cases. We give a simple and elementary proof of the general result.
We study monotone and convex stochastic orders for processes with independent increments. Our contributions are twofold: First, we relate stochastic orders of the Poisson component to orders of their (generalized) Lévy measures. The relation is proven using an interpolation formula for infinitely divisible laws. Second, we derive explicit conditions on the characteristics of the processes. In this case, we prove the conditions via constructions of couplings.
We study stochastic monotonicity and propagation of order for Markov processes with respect to stochastic integral orders characterized by cones of functions satisfying $Φf \geq 0$ for some linear operator $Φ$. We introduce a new functional analytic technique based on the generator $A$ of a Markov process and its resolvent. We show that the existence of an operator $B$ with positive resolvent such that $ΦA - B Φ$ is a positive operator for a large enough class of functions implies stochastic monotonicity. This establishes a technique for proving stochastic monotonicity and propagation of order…
A stochastic ordering approach is applied with Stein's method for approximation by the equilibrium distribution of a birth-death process. The usual stochastic order and the more general s-convex orders are discussed. Attention is focused on Poisson and translated Poisson approximation of a sum of dependent Bernoulli random variables, for example k-runs in i.i.d. Bernoulli trials. Other applications include approximation by polynomial birth--death distributions.
We investigate stochastic Volterra equations and their limiting laws. The stochastic Volterra equations we consider are driven by a Hilbert space valued \Levy noise and integration kernels may have non-linear dependence on the current state of the process. Our method is based on an embedding into a Hilbert space of functions which allows to represent the solution of the Volterra equation as the boundary value of a solution to a stochastic partial differential equation. We first gather abstract results and give more detailed conditions in more specific function spaces.
First order stochastic dominance and monotone likelihood ratio are two partial orders on the $n$-probability simplex that play an important role in the establishment of structural results for MDPs and POMDPs. We study the strength of those partial orders in terms of how likely it is for two random points on the $n$-probability simplex to be comparable with respect to each of the two partial orders.
Stochastic partial differential equations of second order with two unknown parameters are studied. Based on ergodicity, two suitable families of minimum constrast estimators are introduced. Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of estimators are proved. The results are applied to hyperbolic equations perturbed by Brownian noise.
In this paper, we consider stationarity of a class of second-order stochastic evolution equations with memory, driven by Wiener processes or Levy jump processes, in Hilbert spaces. The strategy is to formulate by reduction some first-order systems in connection with the stochastic equations under investigation. We develop asymptotic behavior of dissipative second-order equations and then apply them to time delay systems through Gearhart-Pruss-Greiner's theorem. The stationary distribution of the system under consideration is the projection on the first coordinate of the corresponding stationar…
In this note, we shall consider the existence of invariant measures for a class of infinite dimensional stochastic functional differential equations with delay whose driving semigroup is eventually norm continuous. The results obtained are applied to stochastic heat equations with distributed delays which appear in such terms having the highest order partial derivatives. In the systems, the associated driving semigroups are generally non eventually compact.
In this paper we present stochastic foundations of fractional dynamics driven by fractional material derivative of distributed order-type. Before stating our main result we present the stochastic scenario which underlies the dynamics given by fractional material derivative. Then we introduce a Levy walk process of distributed-order type to establish our main result, which is the scaling limit of the considered process. It appears that the probability density function of the scaling limit process fulfills, in a weak sense, the fractional diffusion equation with material derivative of distribute…
This note is concerned with an important for modelling question of existence of solutions of stochastic partial differential equations as proper stochastic processes, rather than processes in the generalized sense. We consider a first order stochastic partial differential equations of the form $\pd Ut = DW$, and $\pd Ut-\pd Ux= DW$, where $D$ is a differential operator and $W(t,x)$ is a continuous but non-differentiable function (field). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for stochastic equations to have solutions as functions. The result is then applied to the equation for a yield c…
We discuss a new stochastic ordering for the sequence of independent random variables. It generalizes the stochastic precedence order that is defined for two random variables to the case $n>2$. All conventional stochastic orders are transitive, whereas the stochastic precedence order is not. Therefore, a new approach to compare the sequence of random variables had to be developed that resulted in the notion of the sequential precedence order. A sufficient condition for this order is derived and some examples are considered.
In this paper we provide a novel family of stochastic orders that generalizes second order stochastic dominance, which we call the $α,[a,b]$-concave stochastic orders. These stochastic orders are generated by a novel set of "very" concave functions where $α$ parameterizes the degree of concavity. The $α,[a,b]$-concave stochastic orders allow us to derive novel comparative statics results for important applications in economics that cannot be derived using previous stochastic orders. In particular, our comparative statics results are useful when an increase in a lottery's riskiness changes the …
A procedure is described for defining a generalized solution for stochastic differential equations using the Cameron-Martin version of the Wiener Chaos expansion. Existence and uniqueness of this Wiener Chaos solution is established for parabolic stochastic PDEs such that both the drift and the diffusion operators are of the second order.
Using a multiplicative structure (for example that of a Banach algebra) and a partial order we construct a weak version of a Banach space valued stochastic integral with respect to square integrable martingales.
We introduce a class of second order backward stochastic differential equations and show relations to fully non-linear parabolic PDEs. In particular, we provide a stochastic representation result for solutions of such PDEs and discuss Monte Carlo methods for their numerical treatment.
We show that a family of random variables is uniformly integrable if and only if it is stochastically bounded in the increasing convex order by an integrable random variable. This result is complemented by proving analogous statements for the strong stochastic order and for power-integrable dominating random variables. Especially, we show that whenever a family of random variables is stochastically bounded by a p-integrable random variable for some p>1, there is no distinction between the strong order and the increasing convex order. These results also yield new characterizations of relative c…
The general notion of a stochastic ordering is that one probability distribution is smaller than a second one if the second attaches more probability to higher values than the first. Motivated by recent work on barycentric maps on spaces of probability measures on ordered Banach spaces, we introduce and study a stochastic order on the space of probability measures $\mathcal{P}(X)$, where $X$ is a metric space equipped with a closed partial order, and derive several useful equivalent versions of the definition. We establish the antisymmetry and closedness of the stochastic order (and hence that…
We show that first order semilinear PDEs by stochastic perturbation are well-posedness for globally Holder continuous and bounded vector field, with an integrability condition on the divergence. This result extends the liner case presented in [2]. The proof is based on in the stochastic characteristics method and a version of the commuting Lemma.
Several methods are available in the literature to stochastically compare random variables and random vectors. We introduce the notion of asymptotic stochastic order for random processes and define four such orders. Various properties and interrelations of the orders are discussed. Sufficient conditions for these orders to hold for certain stochastic processes, evolving from some statistical entities of interest, are derived.
We study a generalized family of stochastic orders, semiparametrized by a distortion function H, namely H-distorted stochastic dominance, which may determine a continuum of dominance relations from the first- to the second-order stochastic dominance (and beyond). Such a family is especially suitable for representing a decision maker's preferences in terms of risk aversion and may be used in those situations in which a strong order does not have enough discriminative power, whilst a weaker one is poorly representative of some classes of decision makers. In particular, we focus on the class of p…
We propose and analyze a specific asymptotic stochastic order for random processes based on the measure of departure discussed in the literature. As applications, we stochastically compare mixtures of order statistics and record values coming from two different homogeneous samples, as the sample size becomes large.
In this paper, we bring together the worlds of model order reduction for stochastic linear systems and $\mathcal H_2$-optimal model order reduction for deterministic systems. In particular, we supplement and complete the theory of error bounds for model order reduction of stochastic differential equations. With these error bounds, we establish a link between the output error for stochastic systems (with additive and multiplicative noise) and modified versions of the $\mathcal H_2$-norm for both linear and bilinear deterministic systems. When deriving the respective optimality conditions for mi…
