We report multistate optical switching among high-order bouncing-ball modes ("ripples") and whispering-gallerying modes ("petals") of exciton-polariton condensates in a laser-generated annular trap. By tailoring the diameter and power of the annular trap, the polariton condensate can be switched among different trapped modes, accompanied by redistribution of spatial densities and superlinear increase in the emission intensities, implying that polariton condensates in this geometry could be exploited for a multistate switch. A model based on non-Hermitian modes of the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that this mode switching arises from competition between pump-induced gain and in-plane polariton loss. The parameters for reproducible switching among trapped modes have been measured experimentally, giving us a phase diagram for mode switching. Taken together, the experimental result and theoretical modeling advances our fundamental understanding of the spontaneous emergence of coherence and move us toward its practical exploitation.
Optically pumping high quality semiconductor microcavities allows for the spontaneous formation of polariton condensates, which can propagate over distances of many microns. Tightly focussed pump spots here are found to produce expanding incoherent bottleneck polaritons which coherently amplify the ballistic polaritons and lead to the formation of unusual ring condensates. This quantum liquid is found to form a remarkable sunflower-like spatial ripple pattern which arises from self interference with Rayleigh-scattered coherent polariton waves in the Cerenkov regime.
We examine the photoluminescence of highly-excited exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. Under strong pumping, exciton-polariton condensates have been observed to undergo a lasing transition where strong coupling between the excitons and photons is lost. We discuss an alternative high-density scenario, where the strong coupling is maintained. We find that the photoluminescence smoothly transitions between the lower polariton energy to the cavity photon energy. An intuitive understanding of the change in spectral characteristics is given, as well as differences to the ph…
The precise adjustment of the polariton condensate flow under incoherent excitation conditions is an indispensable prerequisite for polariton-based logic gate operations. In this report, an all-optical approach for steering the motion of a polariton condensate using only non-resonant excitation is demonstrated. We create arbitrarily shaped functional potentials by means of a spatial light modulator, which allow for tailoring the condensate state and guiding a propagating condensate along reconfigurable pathways. Additional numerical simulations confirm the experimental observations and elucida…
A simple model, describing the dynamics of the non-equilibrium pseudospin of a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton polaritons, has been formulated. It explains the suppression of spin splitting of a non-equilibrium polariton condensate in an external magnetic field, the optical alignment, and the conversion of alignment into orientation of polaritons. It has been shown that inverse effects are possible, to wit, the spontaneous circular polarization and the enhancement of spin splitting of a non-equilibrium condensate of polaritons in the absence of external field.
We propose a way to directly excite compact localized condensates in a nearly flat band of the exciton-polariton Lieb lattice by short Laguerre-Gaussian pulses and investigate the dynamics of these condensates in the presence of repulsive polariton-polariton interaction and distributed losses in the lattice. The evolution of a low-density compact polariton condensate shows fast Rabi oscillations between its excitonic and photonic components, with slow beatings of the Rabi oscillation amplitude. Both oscillations and beatings are suppressed at higher condensate densities due to polariton-polari…
Exciton-polaritons are mixed light-matter quasiparticles. We have developed a statistical model describing stochastic exciton-photon transitions within a condensate of exciton polaritons. We show that the exciton-photon correlator depends on the "hidden variable" which characterizes the rate of exciton-photon transformations in the condensate. We discuss implications of this effect for the quantum statistics of photons emitted by polariton lasers.
A full quantum theory beyond the mean-field regime is developed for an exciton polariton condensate, to gain a complete understanding of quantum fluctuations. We find analytical solution for the polariton density matrix, showing the polariton nonlinearity causing fast relaxation correlated with the pump so as to yield the condensation at threshold. Increasing the pump intensity, a nonequilibrium phase transition towards the condensation of lower polaritons emerges, with a statistics transiting from a thermal, through a super-Poissonian and to a nonclassical distribution beyond the understandin…
We show that the appropriate on-off switching of Josephson coupling between exciton-polaritons in coupled semiconductor microcavities can reveal the full capacity for generating entanglement with a recently proposed method which essentially enhances the nonlinearity of the system. The improvement achieved with this simple modulation of the coupling is substantial over the case where it is kept constant. The suggested procedure is expected to find also application in other research areas, where nonlinear interacting bosons are encountered.
We explore nonlinear transitions of polariton wavepackets, first, to a soliton and then to a standing wave polariton condensate in a multi-mode microwire system. At low polariton density we observe ballistic propagation of the multi-mode polariton wavepackets arising from the interference between different transverse modes. With increasing polariton density, the wavepackets transform into single mode bright solitons due to effects of both inter-modal and intra-modal polariton-polariton scattering. Further increase of the excitation density increases thermalisation speed leading to relaxation o…
We present a microscopic theory of the equilibrium polariton condensate state of a semiconductor quantum well in a planar optical cavity. The theory accounts for the adjustment of matter excitations to the presence of a coherent photon field, predicts effective polariton-polariton interaction strengths that are weaker and condensate exciton fractions that are smaller than in the commonly employed exciton-photon model, and yields effective Rabi coupling strengths that depend on the detuning of the cavity photon energy relative to the bare exciton energy. The dressed quasiparticle bands that app…
We present a time-resolved study of the logical operation of a polariton condensate transistor switch. Creating a polariton condensate (source) in a GaAs ridge-shaped microcavity with a non-resonant pulsed laser beam, the polariton propagation towards a collector, at the ridge edge, is controlled by a second weak pulse (gate), located between the source and the collector. The experimental results are interpreted in the light of simulations based on the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, including incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate.
Spin-selective spatial filtering of propagating polariton condensates, using a controllable spin-dependent gating barrier, in a one-dimensional semiconductor microcavity ridge waveguide is reported. A nonresonant laser beam provides the source of propagating polaritons while a second circularly polarized weak beam imprints a spin dependent potential barrier, which gates the polariton flow and generates polariton spin currents. A complete spin-based control over the blocked and transmitted polaritons is obtained by varying the gate polarization.
We investigate the thermal robustness of traveling polariton condensates. We create remote condensates that have never been in contact, and study their interference in momentum space, when they travel with the same velocity, by means of time-resolved photoluminescence. We determine the condensed to thermal, uncondensed polariton fraction, which shows a gradual decay with increasing temperature, and obtain the critical temperature for the Bose-Einstein-like condensate (BEC) phase transition. We tentatively compare our experimental findings with theoretical models, developed for atomic condensat…
A condensed matter platform for analogue simulation of complex two-dimensional molecular bonding configurations, based on optically trapped exciton-polariton condensates is proposed. The stable occupation of polariton condensates in the excited states of their optically configurable potential traps permits emulation of excited atomic orbitals. A classical mean field model describing the dissipative coupling mechanism between p-orbital condensates is derived, identifying lowest threshold condensation solutions as a function of trap parameters corresponding to bound and antibound $π$ and $σ$ bon…
We explore the exciton-polariton condensation in the two degenerate orbital states. In the honeycomb lattice potential, at the third band we have two degenerate vortex-antivortex lattice states at the inequivalent K and K'-points. We have observed energetically degenerate condensates within the linewidth ~ 0.3 meV, and directly measured the vortex-antivortex lattice phase order of the order parameter. We have also observed the intensity anticorrelation between polariton condensates at the K- and K'-points. We relate this intensity anticorrelation to the dynamical feature of polariton condensat…
We investigate the spin polarization of localized exciton-polariton condensates. We demonstrate the presence of an effective magnetic field leading to the formation of elliptically polarized condensates. We show that this synthetic field has an entirely photonic origin, which we believe is unique for the CdTe-based microcavities. Moreover, the degree of spin polarization of localized polariton condensates in samples with magnetic ions depends on the excitation power or polarization of the non-resonant excitation laser. In an external magnetic field, the semimagnetic condensate spontaneously bu…
We show that recent paper by Flayac et al. [Phys. Rev. B 81, 045318 (2010) and arXiv:0911.1650] is misleading. We demonstrate the existence of static half-quantum vortices in exciton-polariton condensates and calculate the warping of their polarization texture produced by TE-TM splitting of polariton band.
In this manuscript we will gather clear experimental evidences of remote coherence between two polariton condensate droplets that have never overlapped in real space and discuss how these interferences in momentum space can be used to estimate the critical temperature for the BEC like transition.
Several mechanisms are discussed which could determine the spatial coherence of a polariton condensate confined to a one dimensional wire. The mechanisms considered are polariton-polariton interactions, disorder scattering and non-equilibrium occupation of finite momentum modes. For each case, the shape of the resulting spatial coherence function g1(x) is analysed. The results are compared with the experimental data on a polariton condensate in an acoustic lattice from [E. A. Cerda-Mendez et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 116402 (2010)]. It is concluded that the shape of g1(x) can only be explained…
We present a theoretical study of synchronization dynamics in incoherently pumped exciton-polariton condensates in coupled polariton traps. Our analysis is based on a coupled-mode theory for the generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which employs an expansion in non-Hermitian, pump-dependent modes appropriate for the pumped geometry. We find that polariton-polariton and reservoir-polariton interactions play competing roles and lead to qualitatively different synchronized phases of the coupled polariton modes as pumping power is increased. Crucially, these interactions can also act against eac…
Polariton condensates are investigated in periodical potentials created by surface acoustic waves using both resonant and non-resonant optical excitation. Under resonant pumping condensates are formed due to polariton parametric scattering from the pump. In this case the single particle dispersion in the presence of the condensate shows a strong reduction of the energy gap arising from the acoustic modulation, indicating efficient screening of the surface acoustic wave potential by spatial modulation of the polariton density. The observed results are in good agreement with a model based on gen…
In a proposed book chapter surface plasmon polariton assisted optical switching in noble metal nanoparticle systems is discussed in the sub-band gap formalism.
Owing to their integer spin, exciton-polaritons in microcavities can be used for observation of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation in solid state. However, spin-related phenomena of such condensates are difficult to explore due to the relatively small Zeeman effect of standard semiconductor microcavity systems and the strong tendency to sustain an equal population of two spin components, which precludes the observation of condensates with a well defined spin projection along the axis of the system. The enhancement of the Zeeman splitting can be achieved by introducing magnetic ions to …
We realise bistability in the spinor of polariton condensates under non-resonant optical excitation and in the absence of biasing external fields. Numerical modelling of the system using the Ginzburg-Landau equation with an internal Josephson coupling between the two spin components of the condensate qualitatively describes the experimental observations. We demonstrate that polariton spin bistability persists for sweep times in the range of $[10 μsec,1 sec]$ offering a promising route to spin switches and spin memory elements.
We demonstrate a regime in which matter-wave condensates of exciton-polaritons trapped in an elliptically shaped two-dimensional potential appear as a coherent mixture of ground and first-excited state of the quantum harmonic oscillator. This system resembles an optically controllable two-level system and produces near terahertz harmonic oscillations of the condensate's center of mass along the major axis of the elliptical trapping potential. The population ratio between the two trap levels is tunable through the excitation laser power and is shown to follow Lotka-Volterra dynamics. We demonst…
Polariton condensates propagation is strongly dependent on the particular energy landscape the particles are moving upon, in which the geometry of the pathway laid for their movement plays a crucial role. Bends in the circuits trajectories affect the condensates speed and oblique geometries introduce an additional discretization of the polaritons momenta due to the mixing of short and long axis wavevectors on the propagating eigenvalues. In this work, we study the nature of the propagation of condensates along the arms of a polariton coupler, by a combination of time-resolved micro-tomography …
We report spin and intensity coupling of an exciton-polariton condensate to the mechanical vibrations of a circular membrane microcavity. We optically drive the microcavity resonator at the lowest mechanical resonance frequency while creating an optically-trapped spin-polarized polariton condensate in different locations on the microcavity, and observe spin and intensity oscillations of the condensate at the vibration frequency of the resonator. Spin oscillations are induced by vibrational strain driving, whilst the modulation of the optical trap due to the displacement of the membrane causes …
We investigate, through polarization-resolved spectroscopy, the spin transport by propagating polariton condensates in a quasi one-dimensional microcavity ridge along macroscopic distances. Under circularly polarized, continuous-wave, non-resonant excitation, a sinusoidal precession of the spin in real space is observed, whose phase depends on the emission energy. The experiments are compared with simulations of the spinor-polariton condensate dynamics based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, modified to account for incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate…
We investigate an all-optical microscale planar lensing technique based on coherent fluids of semiconductor cavity exciton-polariton condensates. Our theoretical analysis underpins the potential in using state-of-the-art spatial light modulation of nonresonant excitation beams to guide and focus polariton condensates away from their pumping region. The nonresonant excitation profile generates an excitonic reservoir that blueshifts the polariton mode and provides gain, which can be spatially tailored into lens shapes at the microscale to refract condensate waves. We propose several different av…
The dynamics of the expansion of the first order spatial coherence g(1) for a polariton system in a high-Q GaAs microcavity was investigated on the basis of Young's double slit experiment under 3 ps pulse excitation at the conditions of polariton Bose-Einstein condensation. It was found that in the process of condensate formation the coherence expands with a constant velocity of about 10^8 cm/s. The measured coherence is smaller than that in thermally equilibrium system during the growth of condensate density and well exceeds it at the end of condensate decay. The onset of spatial coherence is…
In this letter, we give an analytical quantum description of a non-equilibrium polariton Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) based on the solution of the master equation for the full polariton density matrix in the limit of fast thermalization. We find the density matrix of a non-equilibrium BEC, that takes into account quantum correlations between all polariton states. We show that the formation of BEC is accompanied by the build-up of cross-correlations between the ground state and the excited states reaching their highest values at the condensation threshold. Despite the non-equilibrium nature o…
We report on the linear polarization of polariton condensates in a codirectional coupler that allows evanescent coupling between adjacent waveguides. We observe polarization-dependent intensity oscillations in the output terminal of the coupler that we identify as the mode beating between the linear-polarized eigenmodes.
We study the dynamics of polariton condensate wave trains that propagate along a quasi one-dimensional waveguide. Through the application of tuneable potential barriers the propagation can be reflected and multiple reflections used to confine and store a propagating state. Energy-relaxation processes allow the delayed relaxation into a long-living coherent ground state. Aside the potential routing of polariton condensate signals, the system forms an AND-type logic gate compatible with incoherent inputs.
A cavity-polariton, formed due to the strong coupling between exciton and cavity mode, is one of the most promising composite bosons for realizing macroscopic spontaneous coherence at high temperature. Up to date, most of polariton quantum degeneracy experiments were conducted in the complicated two-dimensional (2D) planar microcavities. The role of dimensionality in coherent quantum degeneracy of a composite bosonic system of exciton polaritons remains mysterious. Here we report the first experimental observation of a one-dimensional (1D) polariton condensate in a ZnO microwire at room temper…
We present a time-resolved study of energy relaxation and trapping dynamics of polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity ridge. The combination of two non-resonant, pulsed laser sources in a GaAs ridge-shaped microcavity gives rise to profuse quantum phenomena where the repulsive potentials created by the lasers allow the modulation and control of the polariton flow. We analyze in detail the dependence of the dynamics on the power of both lasers and determine the optimum conditions for realizing an all-optical polariton condensate transistor switch. The experimental results are inte…
We demonstrate the reconstruction of the exciton-polariton condensate loaded in a single active miniband in one-dimensional microcavity wires with a complex-valued periodic potentials. The effect appears due to strong polariton-polariton repulsion and it depends on the type of the single-particle dispersion of the miniband, which can be fine tuned by the real and imaginary components of the potential. As a result, the condensate can be formed in a $0$-state, $π$-state, or mixed state of spatiotemporal intermittency, depending on the shape of the miniband, strength of interparticle interaction,…
The dynamics of propagating polariton condensates in one-dimensional microcavities is investigated through time resolved experiments. We find a strong increase in the condensate intensity when it travels through the non-resonantly excited area. This amplification is shown to come from bosonic stimulated relaxation of reservoir excitons into the polariton condensate, allowing for the repopulation of the condensate through non-resonant pumping. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate a polariton amplifier with a large band width, opening the way towards the transport of polaritons with high densitie…
We demonstrate tunable dissipative interactions between optically trapped exciton-polariton condensates. We apply annular shaped nonresonant optical beams to both generate and confine each condensate to their respective traps, pinning their natural frequencies. Coupling between condensates is realized through the finite escape rate of coherent polaritons from the traps leading to robust phase locking with neighboring condensates. The coupling is controlled by adjusting the polariton propagation distance between neighbors. This permits us to map out regimes of both strong and weak dissipative c…
Spatial quantum coherence between two separated driven-dissipative polariton condensates created non-resonantly and with a different occupation is studied. We identify the regions where the condensates remain coherent with the phase difference continuously changing with the pumping imbalance and the regions where each condensate acquires its own chemical potential with phase differences exhibiting time-dependent oscillations. We show that in the mutual coherence limit the coupling consists of two competing contributions: a symmetric Heisenberg exchange and the Dzyloshinskii-Moriya asymmetric i…
We propose a new system for the study of event horizons and black holes - a Bose-Einstein condensate of exciton-polaritons. Hawking radiation from a closed horizon in 2D is observed in numerical experiments. We simulate inter-Universe and intra-Universe wormholes capitalizing on the spinor nature of polariton condensates and on the spin dependence of polariton-polariton interactions.
Collective (elementary) excitations of quantum bosonic condensates, including condensates of exciton polaritons in semiconductor microcavities, are a sensitive probe of interparticle interactions. In anisotropic microcavities with momentum-dependent TE-TM splitting of the optical modes, the excitations dispersions are predicted to be strongly anisotropic, which is a consequence of the synthetic magnetic gauge field of the cavity, as well as the interplay between different interaction strengths for polaritons in the singlet and triplet spin configurations. Here, by directly measuring the disper…
We study the effects of imprinting a single-quantized vortex on the steady state of a microcavity exciton-polariton condensate generated via parametric scattering. Interestingly we observe two distinct regimes: In the first case, at low polariton densities, the effect of the pulsed probe, containing the vortex state, is to generate a gain response in the condensate lasting for tens of picoseconds during which no dissipation of the circulating currents is detected. In the second regime, at higher densities, the gain lasts much less and the circulation is imprinted directly into the steady state…
We analyse nonequilibrium phase transitions in microcavity polariton condensates trapped in optically induced annular potentials. We develop an analytic model for annular optical traps, which gives an intuitive interpretation for recent experimental observations on the polariton spatial mode switching with variation of the trap size. In the vicinity of polariton lasing threshold we then develop a nonlinear mean-field model accounting for interactions and gain saturation, and identify several bifurcation scenarios leading to formation of high angular momentum quantum vortices. For experimentall…
We investigate exciton-polariton condensation under magnetic field in a single high-quality semiconductor micropillar cavity. We observe successive polariton condensation of each spin component for two distinct threshold powers. Pronounced and non-monotonous variations of both the Zeeman splitting and the circular polarization of the emission are measured across these two condensation thresholds. This unexpected behavior deeply deviates from the so-called spin Meissner effect predicted for a fully thermalized system. Our measurements can be understood in a kinetic approach taking into account …
In this paper, we see a strong effect of the injected current on the light emission from the polariton condensate in an n-i-n structure, when we monitor the luminescence intensity under applied bias at various pump powers. We present here three thresholds for nonlinear increase of the intensity. We show that small changes of the incoherent injected current lead to stimulated enhancement of the coherent light emission from free carriers. We conclude that the polariton condensate-current system is a highly nonlinear electro-optical system.
We study nonlinear dynamics of exciton-polaritons in an incoherently pumped semiconductor microcavity with embedded weak-contrast lattice and coupled to an exciton reservoir. We elucidate fundamental features of non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensate trapped in one-dimensional periodical potential close to zero momentum (so-called "Zero-state") and to the state at the boundary of Brillouin zone ("$π$-state"). Within the framework of the mean-field theory, we identify different regimes of both relaxation and oscillatory dynamics of coherent exciton-polaritons governed by superpositions of…
