We demonstrate the reconstruction of the exciton-polariton condensate loaded in a single active miniband in one-dimensional microcavity wires with a complex-valued periodic potentials. The effect appears due to strong polariton-polariton repulsion and it depends on the type of the single-particle dispersion of the miniband, which can be fine tuned by the real and imaginary components of the potential. As a result, the condensate can be formed in a $0$-state, $π$-state, or mixed state of spatiotemporal intermittency, depending on the shape of the miniband, strength of interparticle interaction, and distribution of losses in the system. The reconstruction of the condensate wave function takes place by proliferation of nuclei of the new condensate phase in the form of dark solitons. We show that, in general, the interacting polaritons are not condensed in the state with minimal losses, neither they accumulate in the state with a well-defined wave vector.
We have developed a model in order to account for electron-vibrational effects on absorption, luminescence of molecular aggregates and exciton-polaritons in nanofibers. The model generalizes the mean-field electron-vibrational theory developed by us earlier to the systems with spatial symmetry, exciton luminescence and the exciton-polaritons with spatial dispersion. The correspondence between manifestation of electron-vibrational interaction in monomers, molecular aggregates and exciton-polariton dispersion in nanofibers is obtained by introducing the aggregate line-shape functions in terms of…
We present a quantitative microscopic analysis of the formation of exciton-polaritons, the composite particles possessing light and material components, polariton-polariton interactions, and resonant pumping dynamics in cylindrical semiconductor micropillars. We discuss how the redistribution effect can be used in devices generating photons with non zero orbital angular momenta.
We present a many-body theory for exciton-trion-polaritons in doped two-dimensional materials. Exciton-trion-polaritons are robust coherent hybrid excitations involving excitons, trions, and photons. Signatures of these polaritons have been recently seen in experiments. In these polaritons, the 2-body exciton states are coupled to the material ground state via exciton-photon interaction and the 4-body trion states are coupled to the exciton states via Coulomb interaction. The trion states are not directly optically coupled to the material ground state. The energy-momentum dispersion of these p…
Macroscopic wave packets of spin-polarized exciton-polaritons in two-dimensional microcavities experience the zitterbewegung, the effect manifested by the appearance of the oscillatory motion of polaritons in the direction normal to the initial propagation direction. The oscillating trajectories of exciton-polaritons are adjustable by the control parameters: the splitting of the longitudinal and transverse exciton-polariton modes, the wave vector and the width of the resonant cw pump. Our theoretical analysis supported by the numerical calculations allowed to optimize values of the control par…
Integrated circuits of photonic components are the goal of applied polaritonics. Here, we propose a compact clock generator based on an exciton-polariton micropillar, providing optical signal with modulation frequency up to 100 GHz. This generator can be used for driving polariton devices. The clock frequency can be controlled by the driving laser frequency. The device also features low power consumption (1 pJ/pulse).
We consider exciton-polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of micropillars subjected to circularly polarized (${σ_\pm}$) incoherent pumps, which are arranged to form two domains in the lattice. We predict that the nonlinear interaction between the polaritons and the reservoir excitons gives rise to the topological valley Hall effect where in each valley two counterpropagating helical edge modes appear. Under a resonant pump, ${σ_\pm}$ polaritons propagate in different directions without being reflected around bends. The polaritons propagating along the interface have extremely high effective lifeti…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, known for exhibiting strong excitonic resonances, constitute a very interesting and versatile platform for investigation of light-matter interactions. In this work we report on a strong coupling regime between excitons in monolayer WSe2 and photons confined in an open, voltage-tunable dielectric microcavity. The tunability of our system allows us to extend the exciton-polariton state over a wide energy range and, in particular, to bring the excitonic component of the lower polariton mode into resonance with other excitonic transitions in monolayer WS…
We propose a way to directly excite compact localized condensates in a nearly flat band of the exciton-polariton Lieb lattice by short Laguerre-Gaussian pulses and investigate the dynamics of these condensates in the presence of repulsive polariton-polariton interaction and distributed losses in the lattice. The evolution of a low-density compact polariton condensate shows fast Rabi oscillations between its excitonic and photonic components, with slow beatings of the Rabi oscillation amplitude. Both oscillations and beatings are suppressed at higher condensate densities due to polariton-polari…
We analyze the interaction of exciton-polariton condensates in a one-dimensional semiconductor microcavity with acoustic phonons. We consider the case of a coherently pumped condensate and demonstrate that upon passing of a certain threshold the parametric instability in the system leads to the generation of a coherent acoustic wave and additional polariton harmonics. The process is strongly affected by exciton-exciton interactions which lead to the appearance of the effects of the bistability and hysteresis in the system.
Embedding a monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide in a high-Q optical cavity results in the formation of distinct exciton polariton modes. The polaritons are affected by the strong exciton-phonon interaction in the monolayer. We use a time convolutionless master equation to calculate the phonon influence on the spectra of the polaritons. We discuss the non-trivial dependence of the line shapes of both branches on temperature and detuning. The peculiar polariton dispersion relation results in a linewidth of the lower polariton being largely independent of the coupling to acoustic phono…
Realizing nonlinear optical response in the low photon density limit in solid-state systems has been a long-standing challenge. Semiconductor microcavities in the strong coupling regime hosting exciton-polaritons have emerged as attractive candidates in this context. However, the weak interaction between these quasiparticles has been a hurdle in this quest. Dipolar excitons provide an attractive strategy to overcome this limitation but are often hindered by their weak oscillator strength. The interlayer dipolar excitons in naturally occurring homobilayer MoS$_2$ alleviates this issue owing to …
We theoretically investigate the dynamics of wave packets in a generic, non-Hermitian, optically anisotropic exciton-polariton system that exhibits degeneracies of its complex-valued eigenenergies in the form of pairs of exceptional points in momentum space. We observe the self-acceleration and reshaping of the wave packets governed by their eigenenergies. We further find that the exciton-polariton wave packets tend to self-organize into the eigenstate with the smaller decay rate, then propagate towards the minima of the decay rates in momentum space, resulting in directional transport in real…
Recently there have been several proposals on exciton-polariton topological insulators, most requiring strong external magnetic fields induced by bulky superconducting coils. We propose an alternate design for a polariton topological insulator, where excitons are in a proximity of an additional layer of a ferromagnetic material with a predefined magnetic moment located between the pillars of the cavity. Our design supports a variety of topological phases and transitions between Chern numbers $\pm 2$ and $\pm 1$ by varying either the magnetic moment of the ferromagnetic material or the spin-orb…
Dispersion engineering is a powerful and versatile tool that can vary the speed of light signals and induce negative-mass effects in the dynamics of particles and quasiparticles. Here, we show that dissipative coupling between bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) and photons in an optical microcavity can lead to the formation of exciton polaritons with an inverted dispersion of the lower polariton branch and hence a negative mass. We perform direct measurements of the anomalous dispersion in atomically thin (monolayer) WS$_2$ crystals embedded in planar microcavities and demonstrate that the p…
We present a scheme to obtain anti-chiral edge states in an exciton-polariton honeycomb lattice with strip geometry, where the modes corresponding to both edges propagate in the same direction. Under resonant pumping the effect of a polariton condensate with nonzero velocity in one linear polarization is predicted to tilt the dispersion of polaritons in the other, which results in an energy shift between two Dirac cones and the otherwise flat edge states become tilted. Our simulations show that due to the spatial separation from the bulk modes the edge modes are robust against disorder.
Topological insulators (TIs) are a striking example of materials in which topological invariants are manifested in robustness against perturbations. Their most prominent feature is the emergence of topological edge states with reduced dimension at the boundary between areas with distinct topological invariants. The observable physical effect is unidirectional robust transport, unaffected by defects or disorder. TIs were originally observed in the integer quantum Hall effect for fermionic systems of correlated electrons. However, during the past decade the concepts of topological physics have b…
Dark excitons are of fundamental importance for a wide variety of processes in semiconductors, but are difficult to investigate using optical techniques due to their weak interaction with light fields. We reveal and characterize dark excitons injected by non-resonant pulsed excitation in a semiconductor microcavity structure containing InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells by monitoring their interactions with the bright lower polariton mode. We find a surprisingly long dark exciton lifetime of more than 20 ns which is longer than the time delay between two consecutive pulses. This creates a memory effect…
