Dispersion engineering is a powerful and versatile tool that can vary the speed of light signals and induce negative-mass effects in the dynamics of particles and quasiparticles. Here, we show that dissipative coupling between bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) and photons in an optical microcavity can lead to the formation of exciton polaritons with an inverted dispersion of the lower polariton branch and hence a negative mass. We perform direct measurements of the anomalous dispersion in atomically thin (monolayer) WS$_2$ crystals embedded in planar microcavities and demonstrate that the propagation direction of the negative-mass polaritons is opposite to their momentum. Our study introduces a new concept of non-Hermitian dispersion engineering for exciton polaritons and opens a pathway for realising new phases of quantum matter in a solid state.
We have developed a model in order to account for electron-vibrational effects on absorption, luminescence of molecular aggregates and exciton-polaritons in nanofibers. The model generalizes the mean-field electron-vibrational theory developed by us earlier to the systems with spatial symmetry, exciton luminescence and the exciton-polaritons with spatial dispersion. The correspondence between manifestation of electron-vibrational interaction in monomers, molecular aggregates and exciton-polariton dispersion in nanofibers is obtained by introducing the aggregate line-shape functions in terms of…
Atomically thin semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers exhibit a very strong Coulomb interaction, giving rise to a rich exciton landscape. This makes these materials highly attractive for efficient and tunable optoelectronic devices. In this article, we review the recent progress in the understanding of exciton optics, dynamics and transport, which crucially govern the operation of TMD-based devices. We highlight the impact of hBN-encapsulation, which reveals a plethora of many-particle states in optical spectra, and we outline the most novel breakthroughs in t…
We present a quantitative microscopic analysis of the formation of exciton-polaritons, the composite particles possessing light and material components, polariton-polariton interactions, and resonant pumping dynamics in cylindrical semiconductor micropillars. We discuss how the redistribution effect can be used in devices generating photons with non zero orbital angular momenta.
We present a many-body theory for exciton-trion-polaritons in doped two-dimensional materials. Exciton-trion-polaritons are robust coherent hybrid excitations involving excitons, trions, and photons. Signatures of these polaritons have been recently seen in experiments. In these polaritons, the 2-body exciton states are coupled to the material ground state via exciton-photon interaction and the 4-body trion states are coupled to the exciton states via Coulomb interaction. The trion states are not directly optically coupled to the material ground state. The energy-momentum dispersion of these p…
The interaction of optically excited excitons in atomically thin semiconductors with residual doping densities leads to many-body effects which are continuously tunable by external gate voltages. Here, we develop a fully microscopic theory to describe the doping-dependent manipulation of the excitonic properties in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. In particular, we establish a diagonalization approach for the Schrödinger equation which characterizes the interaction of a virtual exciton with the Fermi sea of dopants. Solving this many-body Schrödinger equation provides access t…
Excitons are composite bosons that can feature spin singlet and triplet states. In usual semiconductors, without an additional spin-flip mechanism, triplet excitons are extremely inefficient optical emitters. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with their large spin-orbit coupling, have been of special interest for valleytronic applications for their coupling of circularly polarized light to excitons with selective valley and spin$^{1-4}$. In atomically thin MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ TMD van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, the unique atomic registry of vdW layers provides a quasi-angular momentu…
Integrated circuits of photonic components are the goal of applied polaritonics. Here, we propose a compact clock generator based on an exciton-polariton micropillar, providing optical signal with modulation frequency up to 100 GHz. This generator can be used for driving polariton devices. The clock frequency can be controlled by the driving laser frequency. The device also features low power consumption (1 pJ/pulse).
Two-dimensional semiconductors have emerged as a new class of materials for nanophotonics for their strong exciton-photon interaction and flexibility for engineering and integration. Taking advantage of these properties, we engineer an efficient lasing medium based on dipolar interlayer excitons, in rotationally aligned atomically thin heterostructures. Lasing is measured from a transition metal dichalcogenide hetero-bilayer integrated in a silicon nitride grating resonator. A sharp increase in the spatial coherence of the emission was observed across the lasing threshold. The work establishes…
We consider exciton-polaritons in a honeycomb lattice of micropillars subjected to circularly polarized (${σ_\pm}$) incoherent pumps, which are arranged to form two domains in the lattice. We predict that the nonlinear interaction between the polaritons and the reservoir excitons gives rise to the topological valley Hall effect where in each valley two counterpropagating helical edge modes appear. Under a resonant pump, ${σ_\pm}$ polaritons propagate in different directions without being reflected around bends. The polaritons propagating along the interface have extremely high effective lifeti…
Atomically thin semiconductors provide an excellent platform to study intriguing many-particle physics of tightly-bound excitons. In particular, the properties of tungsten-based transition metal dichalcogenides are determined by a complex manifold of bright and dark exciton states. While dark excitons are known to dominate the relaxation dynamics and low-temperature photoluminescence, their impact on the spatial propagation of excitons has remained elusive. In our joint theory-experiment study, we address this intriguing regime of dark state transport by resolving the spatio-temporal exciton d…
Excitons in semiconductors, bound pairs of excited electrons and holes, can form the basis for new classes of quantum optoelectronic devices. A van der Waals heterostructure built from atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) enables the formation of excitons from electrons and holes in distinct layers, producing interlayer excitons with large binding energy and a long lifetime. Employing heterostructures of monolayer TMDs, we realize optical and electrical generation of long-lived neutral and charged interlayer excitons. We demonstrate the transport of neutral in…
We analyze the interaction of exciton-polariton condensates in a one-dimensional semiconductor microcavity with acoustic phonons. We consider the case of a coherently pumped condensate and demonstrate that upon passing of a certain threshold the parametric instability in the system leads to the generation of a coherent acoustic wave and additional polariton harmonics. The process is strongly affected by exciton-exciton interactions which lead to the appearance of the effects of the bistability and hysteresis in the system.
Embedding a monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide in a high-Q optical cavity results in the formation of distinct exciton polariton modes. The polaritons are affected by the strong exciton-phonon interaction in the monolayer. We use a time convolutionless master equation to calculate the phonon influence on the spectra of the polaritons. We discuss the non-trivial dependence of the line shapes of both branches on temperature and detuning. The peculiar polariton dispersion relation results in a linewidth of the lower polariton being largely independent of the coupling to acoustic phono…
We perform a $\mathbf{k \cdot p}$ theory analysis of the spectra of the lowest energy and excited states of the excitons in few-layer atomically thin films of InSe taking into account in-plane electric polarizability of the film and the influence of the encapsulation environment. For the thinner films, the lowest-energy state of the exciton is weakly indirect in momentum space, with its dispersion showing minima at a layer-number-dependent wave number, due to an inverted edge of a relatively flat topmost valence band branch of the InSe film spectrum and we compute the activation energy from th…
Realizing nonlinear optical response in the low photon density limit in solid-state systems has been a long-standing challenge. Semiconductor microcavities in the strong coupling regime hosting exciton-polaritons have emerged as attractive candidates in this context. However, the weak interaction between these quasiparticles has been a hurdle in this quest. Dipolar excitons provide an attractive strategy to overcome this limitation but are often hindered by their weak oscillator strength. The interlayer dipolar excitons in naturally occurring homobilayer MoS$_2$ alleviates this issue owing to …
We present a systematic investigation of the electronic properties of bulk and few layer ReS$_2$ van der Waals crystals using low temperature optical spectroscopy. Weak photoluminescence emission is observed from two non-degenerate band edge excitonic transitions separated by $\sim$ 20 meV. The comparable emission intensity of both excitonic transitions is incompatible with a fully thermalized (Boltzmann) distribution of excitons, indicating the hot nature of the emission. While DFT calculations predict bilayer ReS$_2$ to have a direct fundamental band gap, our optical data suggests that the f…
