We establish a connection between semi-primitive roots of the multiplicative group of integers modulo $2^{k}$ where $k\geq 3$, and the logarithmic base in the algorithm introduced by Fit-Florea and Matula (2004) for computing the discrete logarithm modulo $2^{k}$. Fit-Florea and Matula used properties of the semi-primitive root 3 modulo $2^{k}$ to obtain their results and provided a conversion formula for other possible bases. Quadratic residues that are not primitive roots

We prove that any prime $p$ satisfying $ϕ(p-1)\leq (p-1)/4$ contains two consecutive quadratic non-residues modulo $p$ neither of which is a primitive root modulo $p$.

Quartic and Octic Characters Modulo n

The average number of primitive quadratic Dirichlet characters of modulus n tends to a constant as n->infty. The same is true for primitive cubic characters. It is therefore surprising that, as n->infty, the average number of primitive quartic characters of modulus n grows with ln(n), and that the average number of primitive octic characters of modulus n grows with ln(n)^2. We give an infinite family of polynomials that have roots modulo every positive integer but fail to have rational roots. Each polynomial in this family is made up of monic quadratic factors that do not have linear term.

Using the smoothness of p-1 for computing roots modulo p

We prove, without recourse to the Extended Riemann Hypothesis, that the projection modulo $p$ of any prefixed polynomial with integer coefficients can be completely factored in deterministic polynomial time if $p-1$ has a $(\ln p)^{O(1)}$-smooth divisor exceeding $(p-1)^{{1/2}+δ}$ for some arbitrary small $δ$. Assuming the Bateman-Horn conjecture, we prove the existence of strong sign biases for such pairs. We use character sum estimates to give a bound on the least square-full primitive root modulo a prime. Specifically, we show that there is a square-full primitive root mod $p$ less than $p^{2/3 + 3/(4 \sqrt{e})+ ε}$, and we give some conditional bounds.

A note on the Mordell-Weil rank modulo n

Conjecturally, the parity of the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve over a number field K is determined by its root number. The root number is a product of local root numbers, so the rank modulo 2 is conjecturally the sum over all places of K of a function of elliptic curves over local fields. This note shows that there can be no analogue for the rank modulo 3, 4 or 5, or for the rank itself. In fact, standard conjectures for elliptic curves imply that there is no analogue modulo n for any n>2, so this is purely a parity phenomenon.

Note on Artin's Conjecture on Primitive Roots

E. Artin conjectured that any integer $a >1$ which is not a perfect square is a primitive root modulo $p$ for infinitely many primes $p.$ Let $f_a(p)$ be the multiplicative order of the non-square integer $a$ modulo the prime $p.$ M. R. Murty and S. Srinivasan [10] showed that if $\sum_{p<x} \frac 1 {f_a(p)}= O(x^{1/4})$ then Artin's conjecture is true for $a.$ We relate the Murty-Srinivasan condition to sums involving the cyclotomic periods from the subfields of $\mathbb Q(e^{2πi/p})$ corresponding to the subgroups $<a> \subseteq \mathbb F*_p.$

A proof of the conjecture of Cohen and Mullen on sums of primitive roots

We prove that for all $q>61$, every non-zero element in the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ can be written as a linear combination of two primitive roots of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. This resolves a conjecture posed by Cohen and Mullen.

On Grosswald's conjecture on primitive roots

Grosswald's conjecture is that $g(p)$, the least primitive root modulo $p$, satisfies $g(p) \leq \sqrt{p} - 2$ for all $p>409$. We make progress towards this conjecture by proving that $g(p) \leq \sqrt{p} -2$ for all $409<p< 2.5\times 10^{15}$ and for all $p>3.67\times 10^{71}$.

On the density of primes in arithmetic progression having a prescribed primitive root

Let a,f and g be integers, with a and f coprime. Under the generalized Riemann hypothesis it follows from work of Hooley and Lenstra that the set of primes p such that p=a(mod f) and g is primitive root mod p has a natural density. In this note we explicitly evaluate this density and give some applications of this result.

On a Problem of Mordell with Primitive Roots

We consider the sums of the form $$ S=\sum_{x=1}^{N} \exp\big((ax+b_1g_1^x+... +b_rg_r^x)/p \big) $$, where $p$ is prime and $g_1,..., g_r$ are primitive roots $\pmod p$. An almost forty years old problem of L. J. Mordell asks to find a nontrivial estimate of $S$ when at least two of the coefficients $b_1,...,b_r$ are not divizible by $p$. Here we obtain a nontrivial bound of the average of these sums when $g_1$ runs over all primitive roots $\pmod p$.

On some symmetries of the base $ n $ expansion of $ 1/m $ : Comments on Artin's Primitive root conjecture

Suppose $ m,n\geq 2 $ are co prime integers. We prove certain new symmetries of the base $ n $ representation of $ 1/m $, and in particular characterize the subgroup generated by $ n $ inside $ (\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z})^\times $. A Variant of the Truncated Perron's Formula and Primitive Roots

We show under the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis that for every $δ>0$, almost every prime $q$ in $[Q,2Q]$ has the expected of prime primitive roots in the interval $[x,x+x^{\frac{1}2+δ}]$ provided $Q$ is not more than $x^{\frac{2}{3}-ε}$. Vinogradov's three primes theorem with primes having given primitive roots

The first purpose of our paper is to show how Hooley's celebrated method leading to his conditional proof of the Artin conjecture on primitive roots can be combined with the Hardy-Littlewood circle method. We do so by studying the number of representations of an odd integer as a sum of three primes, all of which have prescribed primitive roots. The second purpose is to analyse the singular series. In particular, using results of Lenstra, Stevenhagen and Moree, we provide a partial factorisation as an Euler product and prove that this does not extend to a complete factorisation.

Uniform Bounds for the Least Almost-Prime Primitive Root

We investigate, using the weighted linear sieve, the distribution of almost-primes among the residue classes (mod p) that generate the multiplicative group of reduced residue classes. We are concerned with finding an upper bound for the least prime or almost-prime primitive root (mod p) that holds uniformly for all p, analogous to Linnik's Theorem on a uniform upper bound for the least prime in a single arithmetic progression (mod p).

Mean Values of Certain Multiplicative Functions and Artin's Conjecture on Primitive Roots

We discuss how one could study asymptotics of cyclotomic quantities via the mean values of certain multiplicative functions and their Dirichlet series using a theorem of Delange. We show how this could provide a new approach to Artin's conjecture on primitive roots. We focus on whether a fixed prime has a certain order modulo infinitely many other primes. Computing higher rank primitive root densities

We extend the character sum method for the computation of densities in Artin primitive root problems developed by H. W. Lenstra and the authors to the situation of radical extensions of arbitrary rank. Our algebraic set-up identifies the key parameters of the situation at hand, and obviates the lengthy analytic multiplicative number theory arguments that used to go into the computation of actual densities. It yields a conceptual interpretation of the formulas obtained, and enables us to extend their range of application in a systematic way.

The Sums of the $k-$powers of the Euler set and their connection with Artin's conjecture for primitive roots

We examine the sums $S(k,\,n)$ of the $k-$th powers of the $ϕ(n)$ integers $α_1<α_2<\cdots<α_{ϕ(n)}$ less than and prime to $n$ (Euler set) and prove a formula (new) for $S(3,\,n)$. If $n$ equals a prime $p$, we prove a theorem showing a connection of $S(3,\,p)$ with Artin's conjectural constant for primitive roots and with other functions involving primes.

Primitive root bias for twin primes

Numerical evidence suggests that for only about $2\%$ of pairs $p,p+2$ of twin primes, $p+2$ has more primitive roots than does $p$. If this occurs, we say that $p$ is exceptional (there are only two exceptional pairs with $5 \leq p \leq 10{,}000$). Assuming the Bateman-Horn conjecture, we prove that at least $0.47\%$ of twin prime pairs are exceptional and at least $65.13\%$ are not exceptional. We also conjecture a precise formula for the proportion of exceptional twin primes.

An Elliptic Curve Analogue of Pillai's Lower Bound on Primitive Roots

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve. For a prime $p$ of good reduction, let $r(E,p)$ be the smallest non-negative integer that gives the $x$-coordinate of a point of maximal order in the group $E(\mathbb{F}_p)$. We prove unconditionally that $r(E,p)> 0.72\log\log p$ for infinitely many $p$, and $r(E,p) > 0.36 \log p$ under the assumption of the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. This can be viewed as elliptic curve analogues of classical lower bounds on the least primitive root of a prime.

Quadratic non-residues and non-primitive roots satisfying a coprimality condition

Let $q\geq 1$ be any integer and let $ ε\in [\frac{1}{11}, \frac{1}{2})$ be a given real number. Given such a nontrivial unit, for a rational prime p which is inert in the field the maximal order of the unit modulo p is p+1. D.H. Lehmer found a quadratic polynomial such that 326 is a primitive root for the first 206 primes represented by this polynomial. It is shown that this is related to the class number one problem and prime producing quadratics. An algorithm is described to find more impressive examples in the same spirit. Y. Gallot used it to establish the current record in which 206 is being replaced by 31082.

Explicit upper bounds on the least primitive root

We give a method for producing explicit bounds on $g(p)$, the least primitive root modulo $p$. Using our method we show that $g(p)<2r\,2^{rω(p-1)}\,p^{\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4r}}$ for $p>10^{56}$ where $r\geq 2$ is an integer parameter. This result beats existing bounds that rely on explicit versions of the Burgess inequality. Our main result allows one to derive bounds of differing shapes for various ranges of $p$. For example, our method also allows us to show that $g(p)<p^{5/8}$ for all $p\geq 10^{22}$ and $g(p)<p^{1/2}$ for $p\geq 10^{56}$.

Distribution of residues of an algebraic number modulo ideals of degree one

Let $f(x)$ be an irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients of degree at least two. Hooley proved that the roots of the congruence equation $f(x)\equiv 0\mod n$ is uniformly distributed. as a parallel of Hooley's theorem under ideal theoretical setting, we prove the uniformity of the distribution of residues of an algebraic number modulo degree one ideals. Then using this result we show that the roots of a system of polynomial congruences are uniformly distributed. Remarks on the distribution of the primitive roots of a prime

Let $\mathbb{F}_p$ be a finite field of size $p$ where $p$ is an odd prime. Let $f(x)\in\mathbb{F}_p[x]$ be a polynomial of positive degree $k$ that is not a $d$-th power in $\mathbb{F}_p[x]$ for all $d\mid p-1$. Furthermore, we require that $f(x)$ and $x$ are coprime. The main purpose of this paper is to give an estimate of the number of pairs $(ξ,ξ^αf(ξ))$ such that both $ξ$ and $ξ^αf(ξ)$ are primitive roots of $p$ where $α$ is a given integer. Small primitive roots and malleability of RSA moduli

In a paper of P. Paillier and J. Villar a conjecture is made about the malleability of an RSA modulus. In this paper we present an explicit algorithm refuting the conjecture. Concretely we can factorize an RSA modulus n using very little information on the factorization of a concrete n' coprime to n. However, we believe the conjecture might be true, when imposing some extra conditions on the auxiliary n' allowed to be used. In particular, the paper shows how subtle the notion of malleability is.
