The high tunability of the density of states of graphene makes it an ideal probe of quantum transport in different regimes. In particular, the supercurrent that can flow through a non-superconducting (N) material connected to two superconducting electrodes, crucially depends on the lenghth of the N relative to the superconducting coherence length. Using graphene as the N material we have investigated the full range of the superconducting proximity effect, from short to long diffusive junctions. By combining several S/graphene/S samples with different contacts and lengths, and measuring their gate-dependent critical currents ($ I_c $) and normal state resistance $ R_N $, we compare the product $eR_NI_c$ to the relevant energies, the Thouless energy in long junctions and the superconducting gap of the contacts in short junctions, over three orders of magnitude of Thouless energy. The experimental variations strikingly follow a universal law, close to the predictions of the proximity effect both in the long and short junction regime, as well as in the crossover region, thereby revealing the interplay of the different energy scales. Differences in the numerical coefficients reveal the crucial role played by the interfacial barrier between graphene and the superconducting electrodes, which reduces the supercurrent in both short and long junctions. Surprisingly the reduction of supercurrent is independent of the gate voltage and of the nature of the electrodes. A reduced induced gap and Thouless energy are extracted, revealing the role played by the dwell time in the barrier in the short junction, and an effective increased diffusion time in the long junction. We compare our results to the theoretical predictions of Usadel equations and numerical simulations which better reproduce experiments with imperfect NS interfaces.
High density superconductor-semiconductor-superconductor junctions have a small induced superconducting gap due to the quasiparticle trajectories with a large momentum parallel to the junction having a very long flight time. Because a large induced gap protects Majorana modes, these long trajectories constrain Majorana devices to a low electron density. We show that a zigzag-shaped geometry eliminates these trajectories, allowing the robust creation of Majorana states with both the induced gap $E_\textrm{gap}$ and the Majorana size $ξ_\textrm{M}$ improved by more than an order of magnitude for…
Tunnelling of electrons in graphene-based junctions is studied theoretically. Graphene is assumed to be deposited either directly on a ferromagnetic insulator or on a few atomic layers of boron nitride which separate graphene from a metallic ferromagnetic substrate. Such junctions can be formed by appropriate external gating of the corresponding system. To describe low-energy electronic states near the Dirac points, certain effective Hamiltonians available in the relevant literature are used. These Hamiltonians include staggered potential and exchange interaction due to ferromagnetic substrate…
We consider a new kind of superconducting proximity effect created by the tunneling of "spin split" Cooper pairs between two conventional superconductors connected by a normal conductor containing a quantum dot. The difference compared to the usual superconducting proximity effect is that the spin states of the tunneling Cooper pairs are split into singlet and triplet components by the electron spin-orbit coupling, which is assumed to be active in the normal conductor only. We demonstrate that the supercurrent carried by the spin-split Cooper pairs can be manipulated both mechanically and elec…
Semiconductor-based Josephson junctions provide a platform for studying proximity effect due to the possibility of tuning junction properties by gate voltage and large-scale fabrication of complex Josephson circuits. Recently Josephson junctions using InAs weak link with epitaxial aluminum contact have improved the product of normal resistance and critical current, $I_cR_N$, in addition to fabrication process reliability. Here we study similar devices with epitaxial contact and find large supercurrent and substantial product of $I_cR_N$ in our junctions. However we find a striking difference w…
The anomalous proximity effect in dirty superconducting junctions is one of most striking phenomena highlighting the profound nature of Majorana bound states and odd-frequency Cooper pairs in topological superconductors. Motivated by the recent experimental realization of planar topological Josephson junctions, we describe the anomalous proximity effect in a superconductor/semiconductor hybrid, where an additional dirty normal-metal segment is extended from a topological Josephson junction. The topological phase transition in the topological Josephson junction is accompanied by a drastic chang…
We study the anomalous proximity effect in diffusive normal metal (DN)/unconventional superconductor junctions, where the local density of states (LDOS) in the DN has a zero-energy peak due to the penetration of the odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave pairing. In this study, we consider a two-dimensional unconventional superconductor on the substrate in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) $λ$, where the Rashba vector is parallel to the $z$-direction. The anomalous proximity effect, originally predicted in spin-triplet $p$-wave superconductor junctions, is sensitive to the RSOC.…
By exploiting proximity coupling, we probe the spin state of the surface layers of CrI3, a van der Waals magnetic semiconductor, by measuring the induced magnetoresistance (MR) of Pt in Pt/CrI3 nano-devices. We fabricate the devices with clean and stable interfaces by placing freshly exfoliated CrI3 flake atop pre-patterned thin Pt strip and encapsulating the Pt/CrI3 heterostructure with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in a protected environment. In devices consisting of a wide range of CrI3 thicknesses (30 to 150 nm), we observe that an abrupt upward jump in Pt MR emerge at a 2 T magnetic field…

We study the thermodynamic properties of a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junction {in the short limit}. Owing to the proximity effect, such a junction constitutes a thermodynamic system where {phase difference}, supercurrent, temperature and entropy are thermodynamical variables connected by equations of state. These allow conceiving quasi-static processes that we characterize in terms of heat and work exchanged. Finally, we combine such processes to construct a Josephson-based Otto and Stirling cycles. We study the related performance in both engine and refrigerator ope…
We report on Andreev reflections at clean NbSe2-bilayer graphene junctions. The high transparency of the junction, which manifests as a large conductance enhancement of up to 1.8, enables us to see clear evidence of a proximity-induced superconducting gap in bilayer graphene and two Andreev reflections through a vertical NbSe2-graphene and a lateral graphene-graphene junction respectively. Quantum transport simulations capture the complexity of the experimental data and illuminate the impact of various microscopic parameters on the transmission of the junction. Our work establishes the practic…
We present a set of experiments to optimize the performance of the noninvasive thermometer based on proximity superconductivity. Current through a standard tunnel junction between an aluminum superconductor and a copper electrode is controlled by the strength of the proximity induced to this normal metal, which in turn is determined by the position of a direct superconducting contact from the tunnel junction. Several devices with different distances were tested. We develop a theoretical model based on Usadel equations and dynamic Coulomb blockade which reproduces the measured results and yield…
We have probed the superconducting proximity effect through long high-quality monocrystalline Ag nanowires, by realizing Josephson junctions of different lengths, with different superconducting materials. Thanks to the high number of junctions probed, both the contact resistance and electron diffusion constant could be determined, enabling a comparison of the measured critical current to theoretical expectation, over the entire regime from short to long diffusive junction. Although the length dependence of the critical current is as expected, the amplitude of the $R_{N}I_c$ product is smaller …
Proximity-driven source of highly spin-polarized ac current on the basis of superconductor/weak ferromagnet/superconductor voltage-biased Josephson junction
We derive a boundary condition for the Nambu Keldysh Green's function in diffusive normal metal / unconventional superconductor junctions applicable for mixed parity pairing. Applying this theory to a 1d model of $s+p$-wave superconductor, we calculate LDOS in DN and charge conductance of DN / $s+p$-wave superconductor junctions. When the $s$-wave component of the pair potential is dominant, LDOS has a gap like structure at zero energy and the dominant pairing in DN is even-frequency spin-singlet $s$-wave. On the other hand, when the $p$-wave component is dominant, the resulting LDOS has a zer…
A substantial influence of the proximity and pair breaking effects on the range of internal phase differences is shown to take place in symmetric double Josephson junctions with closely spaced interfaces and to affect the evolution of the supercurrent j with the changing central lead's length L. If the phase difference phi between the external leads is controlled and L exceeds a few coherence lengths, the regime of interchanging modes is established. The range of the phase differences across the two individual interfaces is reduced with decreasing L, and the states of the higher energy mode ar…
When a single molecule is connected to external electrodes by linker groups, the connectivity of the linkers to the molecular core can be controlled to atomic precision by appropriate chemical synthesis. Recently, the connectivity dependence of the electrical conductance and Seebeck coefficient of single molecules has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Here we study the connectivity dependence of the Wigner delay time of single-molecule junctions and the connectivity dependence of superconducting proximity effects, which occur when the external electrodes are replaced by …
This paper gives an overview of the unconventional dependence of internal phase differences on the external phase difference in superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SINIS) and superconductor-superconductor-superconductor (SISIS) tunnel double junctions. The results are obtained within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach that includes boundary conditions for the superconductor order parameter in the presence of a Josephson coupling through interfaces. The boundary conditions are derived within the GL theory and substantiated microscopically. The absence of the one-to-one correspondence bet…
We explore the role of proximity-induced odd-frequency pairing in the thermoelectricity of a ferromagnet when coupled to a conventional $s$-wave spin-singlet superconductor through a spin-active interface. By varying both the polarization and its direction in the ferromagnet and the interfacial spin-orbit interaction strength, we analyze the behavior of all proximity-induced pair amplitudes in the ferromagnet and their contributions to the thermoelectric coefficients. Based on our results for the Seebeck coefficient, we predict that odd-frequency spin-triplet Cooper pairs are much efficient th…
The shot noise of the current $I$ through junctions to single trioxatriangulenium cations (TOTA$^+$) on Au(111) is measured with a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope using Au tips. The noise is significantly reduced compared to the Poisson noise power of $2eI$ and varies linearly with the junction conductance. The data are consistent with electron transmission through a single spin-degenerate transport channel and show that TOTA$^+$ in a Au contact does not acquire an unpaired electron. Ab initio calculations reproduce the observations and show that the current involves the lowest u…
The quality of a superconductor-normal metal-superconductor Josephson junction (JJ) depends crucially on the transparency of the superconductor-normal metal (S/N) interface. We demonstrate a technique for fabricating planar JJs with perfect S/N interfaces. The technique utilizes a strong inverse proximity effect discovered in Al/V$_5$S$_8$ bilayers, by which the Al layer is driven into the resistive state. The highly transparent S/N homointerface and the peculiar normal metal enable the flow of Josephson supercurrent across a 2.9 $μ$m long weak link. Moreover, our JJ exhibits a giant critical …
