We show that the universal Gröbner basis and the Graver basis of a binomial edge ideal coincide. We provide a description for this basis set in terms of certain paths in the underlying graph. We conjecture a similar result for a parity binomial edge ideal and prove this conjecture for the case when the underlying graph is the complete graph.
Let K be a field equipped with a valuation. Tropical varieties over K can be defined with a theory of Gr{ö}bner bases taking into account the valuation of K. Because of the use of the valuation, the theory of tropical Gr{ö}bner bases has proved to provide settings for computations over polynomial rings over a p-adic field that are more stable than that of classical Gr{ö}bner bases. In this article, we investigate how the FGLM change of ordering algorithm can be adapted to the tropical setting. As the valuations of the polynomial coefficients are taken into account, the classical FGLM algorithm…
We consider a finite dimensional representation of the dihedral group $D_{2p}$ over a field of characteristic two where $p$ is an odd prime and study the corresponding Hilbert ideal $I_H$. We show that $I_H$ has a universal Gr\" {o}bner basis consisting of invariants and monomials only. We provide sharp bounds for the degree of an element in this basis and in a minimal generating set for $I_H$. We also compute the top degree of coinvariants.
In this paper, we prove that every binomial ideal in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero admits a canonical primary decomposition into binomial ideals. Moreover, we prove that this special decomposition is obtained from a cellular decomposition which is also defined in a canonical way and does not depend on the field.
We provide the regularity and the Cohen-Macaulay type of binomial edge ideals of Cohen-Macaulay cones, and we show the extremal Betti numbers of some classes of Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals: Cohen-Macaulay bipartite and fan graphs. In addition, we compute the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the binomial edge ideals of some Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graphs.
In this paper, we prove a finite basis theorem for radical well-mixed difference ideals generated by binomials. As a consequence, every strictly ascending chain of radical well-mixed difference ideals generated by binomials in a difference polynomial ring is finite, which answers a question raised by E. Hrushovski in the binomial case.
We provide a Hochster type formula for the local cohomology modules of binomial edge ideals. As a consequence we obtain a simple criterion for the Cohen-Macaulayness of these ideals and we describe their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and their Hilbert series. We also prove a conjecture of Conca, De Negri and Gorla relating the graded components of the local cohomology modules of binomial edge ideals and their generic initial ideals.
We discuss algebraic and homological properties of binomial edge ideals associated to graphs which are obtained by gluing of subgraphs and the formation of cones.
The package Binomials contains implementations of specialized algorithms for binomial ideals, including primary decomposition into binomial ideals. The current implementation works in characteristic zero. Primary decomposition is restricted to binomial ideals with trivial coefficients to avoid computations over the algebraic numbers. The basic ideas of the algorithms go back to Eisenbud and Sturmfels' seminal paper on the subject. Two recent improvements of the algorithms are discussed and examples are presented.
We provide a characterisation of all graphs whose parity binomial edge ideals have pure resolutions. In particular, we show that the minimal free resolution of a parity binomial edge ideal is pure if and only if the corresponding graph is a complete bipartite graph, or a disjoint union of paths and odd cycles.
We give an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the parity binomial edge ideal of a complete graph $K_{n}$ or equivalently for the ideal generated by all $2\times 2$-permanents of a $2\times n$-matrix. It follows that the depth and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these ideals are independent of $n$.
In this article, we compute the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs. We obtain a lower bound for the regularity of Rees algebra of binomial edge ideals. We also study some algebraic properties of the Rees algebra and special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs via algebraic properties of their initial algebra and Sagbi basis theory. We obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the special fiber ring of binomial edge ideals of closed graphs.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of binomial edge ideals of a clutter and obtain results similar to those obtained for graphs by Rauf \& Rinaldo in \cite{raufrin}. We also answer a question posed in their paper.
We show that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the binomial edge ideal of a graph is bounded below by the length of its longest induced path and bounded above by the number of its vertices.
We study the regularity of binomial edge ideals. For a closed graph $G$ we show that the regularity of the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ coincides with the regularity of $\ini_{\lex}(J_G)$ and can be expressed in terms of the combinatorial data of $G.$ In addition, we give positive answers to Matsuda-Murai conjecture for some classes of graphs.
It is shown that if the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$ defines a Koszul algebra, then $G$ must be chordal and claw free. A converse of this statement is proved for a class of chordal and claw free graphs.
Let G be a finite simple graph. In this paper we will show that the binomial edge ideal of G, JG is toric if and only if each connected component of G is complete and in this case it is the sum of toric ideal associated to bipartite complete graphs.
This paper studies a class of binomial ideals associated to graphs with finite vertex sets. They generalize the binomial edge ideals, and they arise in the study of conditional independence ideals. A Gröbner basis can be computed by studying paths in the graph. Since these Gröbner bases are square-free, generalized binomial edge ideals are radical. To find the primary decomposition a combinatorial problem involving the connected components of subgraphs has to be solved. The irreducible components of the solution variety are all rational.
We study the Betti numbers of binomial edge ideal associated to some classes of graphs with large Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. As an application we give several lower bounds of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of arbitrary graphs depending on induced subgraphs.
In this article, we obtain an upper bound for the regularity of the binomial edge ideal of a graph whose every block is either a cycle or a clique. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound for the regularity of binomial edge ideal of a cactus graph. We also identify certain subclass attaining the upper bound.
We present Binomials, a package for the computer algebra system Macaulay2, which specializes well known algorithms to binomial ideals. These come up frequently in algebraic statistics and commutative algebra, and it is shown that significant speedup of computations like primary decomposition is possible. While central parts of the implemented algorithms go back to Eisenbud and Sturmfels (1996), we also discuss a new algorithm for computing the minimal primes of a binomial ideal. All decompositions make significant use of combinatorial structure found in binomial ideals, and to demonstrate the …
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices. Let $L_G \text{ and } \mathcal{I}_G \: $ denote the Lovász-Saks-Schrijver(LSS) ideal and parity binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n] $ respectively. We classify graphs whose LSS ideals and parity binomial edge ideals are complete intersections. We also classify graphs whose LSS ideals and parity binomial edge ideals are almost complete intersections, and we prove that their Rees algebra is Cohen-Macaulay. We compute the second graded Betti number and obtain a minimal presentation of LSS i…
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the corresponding binomial edge ideal in the polynomial ring $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n].$ In this article, we compute the Hilbert series of binomial edge ideal of decomposable graphs in terms of Hilbert series of its indecomposable subgraphs. Also, we compute the Hilbert series of binomial edge ideal of join of two graphs and as a consequence we obtain the Hilbert series of complete $k$-partite graph, fan graph, multi-fan graph and wheel graph.
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S = \mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n].$ In this article, we compute the second graded Betti numbers of $J_G$, and we obtain a minimal presentation of it when $G$ is a tree or a unicyclic graph. We classify all graphs whose binomial edge ideals are almost complete intersection, prove that they are generated by a $d$-sequence and that the Rees algebra of their binomial edge ideal is Cohen-Macaulay. We also obtain an explicit description of the defining ideal of the Rees …
In this article, we obtain an upper bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of an ideal generated by a homogeneous quadratic sequence in a polynomial ring in terms of the regularity of its related ideals and degrees of its generators. As a consequence, we compute upper bounds for the regularity of powers of several binomial ideals. We generalize a result of Matsuda and Murai to show that the regularity of $J^s_G$ is bounded below by $2s+\ell(G)-1$ for all $s \geq 1$, where $J_G$ denotes the binomial edge ideal of a graph $G$ and $\ell(G)$ is the length of a longest induced path …
We show that under some conditions, if the initial ideal in$_<(I)$ of an ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring has the property that its symbolic and ordinary powers coincide, then the ideal $I$ shares the same property. We apply this result to prove the equality between symbolic and ordinary powers for binomial edge ideals with quadratic Gröbner basis.
In this paper, we provide exact formulas for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of powers of an almost complete intersection ideal $I$ which is generated by a homogeneous $d$-sequence. As applications, when $I$ is an almost complete intersection, taking the form of the (parity) binomial edge ideal of a connected graph, we can describe explicitly formulas for $\reg(I^t)$ for $t\ge 2$. The only exception is when $I$ is the parity binomial edge ideal of a graph which is obtained by adding an edge between two disjoint odd cycles.
Binomial edge ideals IG of a graph G were introduced by [4]. They found some classes of graphs G with the property that IG is a Cohen-Macaulay ideal. This might happen only for few classes of graphs. A certain generalization of being Cohen-Macaulay, named approximately Cohen-Macaulay, was introduced by S. Goto in [3]. We study classes of graphs whose binomial edge ideal are approximately Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover we use some homological methods in order to compute their Hilbert series.
We introduce binomial edge ideals attached to a simple graph $G$ and study their algebraic properties. We characterize those graphs for which the quadratic generators form a Gröbner basis in a lexicographic order induced by a vertex labeling. Such graphs are chordal and claw-free. We give a reduced squarefree Gröbner basis for general $G$. It follows that all binomial edge ideals are radical ideals. Their minimal primes can be characterized by particular subsets of the vertices of $G$. We provide sufficient conditions for Cohen--Macaulayness for closed and nonclosed graphs. Binomial edge ideal…
Let $I$ be an arbitrary ideal generated by binomials. We show that certain equivalence classes of fibers are associated to any minimal binomial generating set of $I$. We provide a simple and efficient algorithm to compute the indispensable binomials of a binomial ideal from a given generating set of binomials and an algorithm to detect whether a binomial ideal is generated by indispensable binomials.
Let $(f\_1,\dots, f\_s) \in \mathbb{Q}\_p [X\_1,\dots, X\_n]^s$ be a sequence of homogeneous polynomials with $p$-adic coefficients. Such system may happen, for example, in arithmetic geometry. Yet, since $\mathbb{Q}\_p$ is not an effective field, classical algorithm does not apply. We provide a definition for an approximate Gr{ö}bner basis with respect to a monomial order $w.$ We design a strategy to compute such a basis, when precision is enough and under the assumption that the input sequence is regular and the ideals $\langle f\_1,\dots,f\_i \rangle$ are weakly-$w$-ideals. The conjecture of…
Given a pure binomial ideal I in variables x_i, we define a new measure of the complexity of the saturation of I with respect to the product of the variables x_i, which we call the norm. We give a bound on the norm in terms of easily-computed invariants of the ideal. We discuss statistical applications both practical and theoretical.
Let $I_G$ be the binomial edge ideal on the generic 2 x n - Hankel matrix associated with a closed graph $G$ on the vertex set [n]. We characterize the graphs $G$ for which $I_G$ has maximal regularity and is Gorenstein.
In this paper we construct a combinatorial algorithm of resolution of singularities for binomial ideals, over a field of arbitrary characteristic. This algorithm is applied to any binomial ideal. This means ideals generated by binomial equations without any restriction, including monomials and $p$-th powers, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field. In particular, this algorithm works for toric ideals. However, toric geometry tools are not needed, the algorithm is constructed following the same point of view as Villamayor algorithm of resolution of singularities in characteristic zero…
For a graph $G$, Bolognini et al. have shown $J_{G}$ is strongly unmixed $\Rightarrow$ $J_{G}$ is Cohen-Macaulay $\Rightarrow$ $G$ is accessible, where $J_{G}$ denotes the binomial edge ideals of $G$. Accessible and strongly unmixed properties are purely combinatorial. We give some motivations to focus only on blocks with whiskers for the characterization of all $G$ with Cohen-Macaulay $J_{G}$. We show that accessible and strongly unmixed properties of $G$ depend only on the corresponding properties of its blocks with whiskers and vice versa. Also, we give an infinite class of graphs whose bin…
We classify generalized block graphs whose binomial edge ideals admit a unique extremal Betti number. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of binomial edge ideals of generalized block graphs is bounded below by $m(G)+1$, where $m(G)$ is the number of minimal cut sets of the graph $G$ and obtain an improved upper bound for the regularity in terms of the number of maximal cliques and pendant vertices of $G$.
In recent years, the combinatorial properties of monomials ideals and binomial ideals have been widely studied. In particular, combinatorial interpretations of free resolution algorithms have been given in both cases. In this present work, we will introduce similar techniques, or modify existing ones to obtain two new results. The first is $S[Λ]$-resolutions of $Λ$-invariant submodules of $k[\mathbb{Z}^n]$ where $Λ$ is a lattice in $\mathbb{Z}^n$ satisfying some trivial conditions. A consequence will be the ability to resolve submodules of $k[\mathbb{Z}^n/Λ]$, and in particular ideals $J$ of $…
There are two different notions for symbolic powers of ideals existing in the literature, one defined in terms of associated primes, the other in terms of minimal primes. Elaborating on an idea known to Eisenbud, Herzog, Hibi, and Trung, we interpret both notions of symbolic powers as suitable saturations of the ordinary powers. We prove a binomial expansion formula for saturated powers of sums of ideals. This gives a uniform treatment to an array of existing and new results on both notions of symbolic powers of such sums: binomial expansion formulas, computations of depth and regularity, and …
Recent results of Kahle and Miller give a method of constructing primary decompositions of binomial ideals by first constructing "mesoprimary decompositions" determined by their underlying monoid congruences. These mesoprimary decompositions are highly combinatorial in nature, and are designed to parallel standard primary decomposition over Noetherean rings. In this paper, we generalize mesoprimary decomposition from binomial ideals to "binomial submodules" of certain graded modules over the corresponding monoid algebra, analogous to the way primary decomposition of ideals over a Noetherean ri…
A natural candidate for a generating set of the (necessarily prime) defining ideal of an $n$-dimensional monomial curve, when the ideal is an almost complete intersection, is a full set of $n$ critical binomials. In a somewhat modified and more tractable context, we prove that, when the exponents are all positive, critical binomial ideals in our sense are not even unmixed for $n\geq 4$, whereas for $n\leq 3$ they are unmixed. We further give a complete description of their isolated primary components as the defining ideals of monomial curves with coefficients. This answers an open question on …
Let $X$ be the Hankel matrix of size $2\times n$ and let $G$ be a closed graph on the vertex set $[n].$ We study the binomial ideal $I_G\subset K[x_1,\ldots,x_{n+1}]$ which is generated by all the $2$-minors of $X$ which correspond to the edges of $G.$ We show that $I_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We find the minimal primes of $I_G$ and show that $I_G$ is a set theoretical complete intersection. Moreover, a sharp upper bound for the regularity of $I_G$ is given.
Let $\mathbf{CCM}$ denote the class of closed graphs with Cohen-Macaulay binomial edge ideals and $\mathbf{PIG}$ denote the class of proper interval graphs. Then $\mathbf{CCM}\subseteq \mathbf{PIG}$. The $\mathbf{PIG}$-completion problem is a classical problem in molecular biology as well as in graph theory and this problem is known to be NP-hard. In this paper, we study the $\mathbf{CCM}$-completion problem. We give a method to construct all possible $\mathbf{CCM}$-completion of a graph. We find the $\mathbf{CCM}$-completion number and the set of all minimal $\mathbf{CCM}$-completions for a l…
Let $J_G$ denote the binomial edge ideal of a connected undirected graph on $n$ vertices. This is the ideal generated by the binomials $x_iy_j - x_jy_i, 1\leq i < j \leq n,$ in the polynomial ring $S= K[x_1,...,x_n,y_1,...,y_n]$ where $\{i,j\}$ is an edge of $G$. We study the arithmetic properties of $S/J_G$ for $G$, the complete bipartite graph. In particular we compute dimensions, depths, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities, Hilbert functions and multiplicities of them. As main results we give an explicit description of the modules of deficiencies, the duals of local cohomology modules, and pro…
In this paper, we study a family of binomial ideals defining monomial curves in the $n-$dimensional affine space determined by $n$ hypersurfaces of the form $x_i^{c_i} - x_1^{u_{i1}} \cdots x_n^{u_{1n}} \in k[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ with $u_{ii} = 0$, $i\in \{ 1, \ldots, n\}$. We prove that, the monomial curves in that family are set-theoretic complete intersection. Moreover, if the monomial curve is irreducible, we compute some invariants such as genus, type and Fröbenius number of the corresponding numerical semigroup. We also describe a method to produce set-theoretic complete intersection semig…
Let $G$ be a finite connected simple graph and $I_{G}$ the toric ideal of the edge ring $K[G]$ of $G$. In the present paper, we study finite graphs $G$ with the property that $I_{G}$ is generated by quadratic binomials and $I_{G}$ possesses no quadratic Gröbner basis. First, we give a nontrivial infinite series of finite graphs with the above property. Second, we implement a combinatorial characterization for $I_{G}$ to be generated by quadratic binomials and, by means of the computer search, we classify the finite graphs $G$ with the above property, up to 8 vertices.
