We constructed a $^3$He magnetic force microscope operating at the base temperature of 300 mK under a vector magnetic field of 2-2-9 T in the $x-y-z$ direction. Fiber optic interferometry as a detection scheme is employed in which two home-built fiber walkers are used for the alignment between the cantilever and the optical fiber. The noise level of the laser interferometer is close to its thermodynamic limit. The capabilities of the sub-Kelvin and vector field are demonstrated by imaging the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in a ferromagnetic superconductor (ErNi$_2$B$_2$C) at $T$=500 mK and by probing a dipole shape of a single Abrikosov vortex with an in-plane tip magnetization.
In this work, we report the integration of an atomic force microscope (AFM) into a helium ion microscope (HIM). The HIM is a powerful instrument, capable of sub-nanometer resolution imaging and machining of nanoscale structures, while the AFM is a well-established versatile tool for multiparametric nanoscale characterization. Combining the two techniques opens the way for unprecedented, in situ, correlative analysis at the nanoscale. Nanomachining and analysis can be performed without contamination of the sample and environmental changes between processing steps. The practicality of the result…
Atomic force microscope (AFM) users often calibrate the spring constants of cantilevers using functionality built into individual instruments. This is performed without reference to a global standard, which hinders robust comparison of force measurements reported by different laboratories. In this article, we describe a virtual instrument (an internet-based initiative) whereby users from all laboratories can instantly and quantitatively compare their calibration measurements to those of others - standardising AFM force measurements - and simultaneously enabling non-invasive calibration of AFM …
We show that functionalized micromechanical bilayer levers can be used as sensitive probes to accurately measure radiative heat flux in vacuum between two materials at the micro scale. By means of calibration to one material these measurements can be made quantitative for radiative heat flux or for either temperature or material emissivity. We discuss issues and opportunities for our method and provide ample technical details regarding its implementation and demonstrate good correspondence with the Stefan Boltzman law. We use this system to probe the phase transition of VO2 and find that radia…
The design of an atomic force microscope with an all-fiber interferometric detection scheme capable of atomic resolution at about 500 mK is presented. The microscope body is connected to a small pumped 3He reservoir with a base temperature of about 300 mK. The bakeable insert with the cooling stage can be moved from its measurement position inside the bore of a superconducting 10 T magnet into an ultra-high vacuum chamber, where tip and sample can be exchanged in-situ. Moreover, single atoms or molecules can be evaporated onto a cold substrate located inside the microscope. Two side chambers a…
We demonstrate coaxial atomic force microscope (AFM) tweezers that can trap and place small objects using dielectrophoresis (DEP). An attractive force is generated at the tip of a coaxial AFM probe by applying a radio frequency voltage between the center conductor and a grounded shield; the origin of the force is found to be DEP by measuring the pull-off force vs. applied voltage. We show that the coaxial AFM tweezers (CAT) can perform three dimensional assembly by picking up a specified silica microsphere, imaging with the microsphere at the end of the tip, and placing it at a target destinat…
We present a combined scanning force and tunneling microscope working in a dilution refrigerator that is optimized for the study of individual electronic nano-devices. This apparatus is equipped with commercial piezo-electric positioners enabling the displacement of a sample below the probe over several hundred microns at very low temperature, without excessive heating. Atomic force microscopy based on a tuning fork resonator probe is used for cryogenic precise alignment of the tip with an individual device. We demonstrate the local tunneling spectroscopy of a hybrid Josephson junction as a fu…
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an essential nanoinstrument technique for several applications such as cell biology and nanoelectronics metrology and inspection. The need for statistically significant sample sizes means that data collection can be an extremely lengthy process in AFM. The use of a single AFM instrument is known for its very low speed and not being suitable for scanning large areas, resulting in very-low-throughput measurement. We address this challenge by parallelizing AFM instruments. The parallelization is achieved by miniaturizing the AFM instrument and operating many of th…
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have promised to revolutionize the way we live and work, and one of particularly promising areas for AI is image analysis. Nevertheless, many current AI applications focus on post-processing of data, while in both materials sciences and medicines, it is often critical to respond to the data acquired on the fly. Here we demonstrate an artificial intelligent atomic force microscope (AI-AFM) that is capable of not only pattern recognition and feature identification in ferroelectric materials and electrochemical systems, but can also respond to cla…
Further improvements are made to the non-linear data analysis algorithm for the atomic force microscope [P. Attard, arXiv:1212.3019v2 (2012)]. The algorithm is required when there is curvature in the compliance region due to photo-diode non-linearity. Results are obtained for the hydrodynamic drainage force, for three surfaces: hydrophilic silica (symmetric, Si-Si), hydrophobic dichlorodimethylsilane (symmetric, DCDMS-DCDMS), and hydrophobic octadecyltrichlorosilane (asymmetric, Si-OTS). The drainage force was measured in the viscous liquid di-n-octylphthalate. The slip-lengths are found to be…
We present the design and performance of a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope (STM) which operates inside a water-cooled Bitter magnet, which can attain a magnetic field of up to 38 T. Due to the high vibration environment generated by the magnet cooling water, a uniquely designed STM and vibration damping system are required. The STM scan head is designed to be as compact and rigid as possible, to minimize the effect of vibrational noise as well as fit the size constraints of the Bitter magnet. The STM uses a differential screw mechanism for coarse tip - sample approach, and operates in …
We describe the development and performance of an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope working under combined extreme conditions of ultra-low temperatures and high magnetic fields. We combined a top-loading dilution refrigerator and a standard bucket dewar with a bottom-loading superconducting magnet to achieve 4.5 days operating time, which is long enough to perform various spectroscopic-imaging measurements. To bring the effective electron temperature closer to the mixing-chamber temperature, we paid particular attention to filtering out the radio-frequency noise, as well as enhan…
We describe the construction and performance of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) capable of taking maps of the tunneling density of states with sub-atomic spatial resolution at dilution refrigerator temperatures and high (14 T) magnetic fields. The fully ultra-high vacuum system features visual access to a two-sample microscope stage at the end of a bottom-loading dilution refrigerator, which facilitates the transfer of in situ prepared tips and samples. The two-sample stage enables location of the best area of the sample under study and extends the experiment lifetime. The successful the…
We present the design of a highly compact High Field Scanning Probe Microscope (HF-SPM) for operation at cryogenic temperatures in an extremely high magnetic field, provided by a water-cooled Bitter magnet able to reach 38 T. The HF-SPM is 14 mm in diameter: an Attocube nano-positioner controls the coarse approach of a piezo resistive AFM cantilever to a scanned sample. The Bitter magnet constitutes an extreme environment for SPM due to the high level of vibrational noise; the Bitter magnet noise at frequencies up to 300 kHz is characterized and noise mitigation methods are described. The perf…
We present a Scanning Hall Probe Microscope operating in ambient conditions. One of the unique features of this microscope is the use of the same stepper motors for both sample positioning as well as scanning, which makes it possible to have a large scan range (few mm) in x and y directions, with a scan resolution of 0.1 $μ$m. Protocols have been implemented to enable scanning at different heights from the sample surface. The z range is 35 mm. Microstructured Hall probes of size 1-5 $μ$m have been developed. A minimum probe-sample distance \textless{} 2 $μ$m has been obtained by the combinatio…
We present a probe-type scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with atomic resolution that is designed to be directly inserted and work in a harsh vibrational cryogen-free superconducting magnet system. When a commercial variable temperature insert (VTI) is installed in the magnet and the STM is in turn housed in the VTI, a lowest temperature of 1.6 K can be achieved, where the STM still operates well. We have tested it in an 8 T superconducting magnet cooled with the pulse-tube cryocooler (PTC) and obtained atomically revolved graphite and NiSe2 images as well as the scanning tunneling spectrum …
We present the design and operation of a fiber-based cryogenic confocal microscope. It is designed as a compact cold-finger that fits inside the bore of a superconducting magnet, and which is a modular unit that can be easily swapped between use in a dilution refrigerator and other cryostats. We aimed at application in quantum optical experiments with electron spins in semiconductors and the design has been optimized for driving with, and detection of optical fields with well-defined polarizations. This was implemented with optical access via a polarization maintaining fiber together with Voig…
We have built a variable temperature scanning probe microscope (SPM) that covers 4.6 K - 180 K and up to 7 Tesla whose SPM head fits in a 52 mm bore magnet. It features a temperature-controlled sample stage thermally well isolated from the SPM body in good thermal contact with the liquid helium bath. It has a 7 sample holder storage carousel at liquid helium temperature for systematic studies using multiple samples and field emission targets intended for spin-polarized spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study on samples with various compositions and doping conditions. Current density distributions in active integrated circuits (ICs) result in patterns of magnetic fields that contain structural and functional information about the IC. Magnetic fields pass through standard materials used by the semiconductor industry and provide a powerful means to fingerprint IC activity for security and failure analysis applications. Here, we demonstrate high spatial resolution, wide field-of-view, vector magnetic field imaging of static (DC) magnetic field emanations from an IC in different active states using a Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM). The QDM employs a dense lay…
We demonstrate a cryogenic scanned probe microscope (SPM) that has been modified to be controlled with a haptic device, such that the operator can `feel' the surface of a sample under investigation. This system allows for direct tactile sensation of the atoms in and on top of a crystal, and we simulate, by using different SPM modalities, a sensation that is representative of the relevant atomic forces controlling the SPM. In particular, we operate the microscope in modes of (1) conventional STM feedback, (2) energy-dependent electron density imaging, (3) q-plus AFM frequency and amplitude base…
Polarized light microscopy, as a contrast-enhancing technique for optically anisotropic materials, is a method well suited for the investigation of a wide variety of effects in solid-state physics, as for example birefringence in crystals or the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). We present a microscopy setup that combines a widefield microscope and a confocal scanning laser microscope with polarization-sensitive detectors. By using a high numerical aperture objective, a spatial resolution of about 240 nm at a wavelength of 405 nm is achieved. The sample is mounted on a $^4$He continuous flow…
Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM) magnetic field imaging is an emerging interrogation and diagnostic technique for integrated circuits (ICs). To date, the ICs measured with a QDM were either too complex for us to predict the expected magnetic fields and benchmark the QDM performance, or were too simple to be relevant to the IC community. In this paper, we establish a 555 timer IC as a "model system" to optimize QDM measurement implementation, benchmark performance, and assess IC device functionality. To validate the magnetic field images taken with a QDM, we used a SPICE electronic circuit simu…

This paper presents a method for hardware trojan detection in integrated circuits. Unsupervised deep learning is used to classify wide field-of-view (4x4 mm$^2$), high spatial resolution magnetic field images taken using a Quantum Diamond Microscope (QDM). QDM magnetic imaging is enhanced using quantum control techniques and improved diamond material to increase magnetic field sensitivity by a factor of 4 and measurement speed by a factor of 16 over previous demonstrations. These upgrades facilitate the first demonstration of QDM magnetic field measurement for hardware trojan detection. Unsupe…

Optical tweezers and AFM cantilevers are often calibrated by fitting their experimental powerspectra of Brownian motion. We demonstrate here that if this is done with typical weighted least-squares methods the result is a bias of relative size between -2/n and +1/n on the value of the fitted diffusion coefficient. Here n is the number of power-spectra averaged over, so typical calibrations contain 10-20% bias. Both the sign and the size of the bias depends on the weighting scheme applied. Hence, so do length-scale calibrations based on the diffusion coefficient. The fitted value for the charac…
Near-field optical microscopes with two independent tips for simultaneous excitation and detection can be essential tools for studying localized optical phenomena on the subwavelength scale. Here, we report on the implementation of a fully automated and robust dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), in which the excitation tip is stationary, while the detection tip automatically scans the surrounding area. To monitor and control the distance between the two probes, mechanical interactions due to shear forces are used. We experimentally investigate suitable scan parameters and f…
