The paper is devoted to introduce some notions extending the unique path lifting property from a homotopy viewpoint and to study their roles in the category of fibrations. First, we define some homotopical kinds of the unique path lifting property and find all possible relationships between them. Moreover, we supplement the full relationships of these new notions in the presence of fibrations. Second, we deduce some results in the category of fibrations with these notions instead of unique path lifting such as the existence of products and coproducts. Also, we give a brief comparison of these new categories to some categories of the other generalizations of covering maps. Finally, we present two subgroups of the fundamental group related to the fibrations with these notions and compare them to the subgroups of the fundamental group related to covering and generalized covering maps.
In classical homotopy theory, two spaces are homotopy equivalent if one space can be continuously deformed into the other. This theory, however, does not respect the discrete nature of graphs. For this reason, a discrete homotopy theory that recognizes the difference between the vertices and edges of a graph was invented, called A-homotopy theory [1-5]. In classical homotopy theory, covering spaces and lifting properties are often used to compute the fundamental group of the circle. In this paper, we develop the lifting properties for A-homotopy theory. Using a covering graph and these lifting…
The settings for homotopical algebra---categories such as simplicial groups, simplicial rings, $A_\infty$ spaces, $E_\infty$ ring spectra, etc.---are often equivalent to categories of algebras over some monad or triple $T$. In such cases, $T$ is acting on a nice simplicial model category in such a way that $T$ descends to a monad on the homotopy category and defines a category of homotopy $T$-algebras. In this setting there is a forgetful functor from the homotopy category of $T$-algebras to the category of homotopy $T$-algebras. Under suitable hypotheses we provide an obstruction theory, in t…
We use Quillen model structures to show a systematic method to lift recollements of hereditary abelian model categories to recollements of their associated homotopy categories. To that end, we use the notion of Quillen adjoint triples and we investigate transfers of abelian model structures along adjoint pairs. Applications include liftings of recollements of module categories to their derived counterpart, liftings to homotopy categories that provide models for stable categories of Gorenstein projective and injective modules and liftings to homotopy categories of n-morphism categories over Iwa…
For any finite group $G$, we define the notion of a Bredon homotopy action of $G$, modelled on the diagram of fixed point sets $(X_H)_{H\leq G}$ for a $G$-space $X$, together with a pointed homotopy action of the group $N_{G}H/H$ on $X^{H}/(\bigcup_{H<K} X^{K})$. We then describe a procedure for constructing a suitable diagram $\underline{X}:O_G^{op}\to Top$ from this data, by solving a sequence of elementary lifting problems. If successful, we obtain a $G$-space $X'$ realizing the given homotopy information, determined up to Bredon $G$-homotopy type. Such lifting methods may also be used to u…
In this paper we define the notion of pullback lifting of a lifting crossed module over a crossed module morphism and interpret this notion in the category of group-groupoid actions as pullback action. Moreover, we give a criterion for the lifting of homotopic crossed module morphisms to be homotopic, which will be called homotopy lifting property for crossed module morphisms. Finally, we investigate some properties of derivations of lifting crossed modules according to base crossed module derivations.
Let $X$ and $Y$ be finite simplicial sets (e.g. finite simplicial complexes), both equipped with a free simplicial action of a finite group $G$. Assuming that $Y$ is $d$-connected and $\dim X\le 2d$, for some $d\geq 1$, we provide an algorithm that computes the set of all equivariant homotopy classes of equivariant continuous maps $|X|\to|Y|$; the existence of such a map can be decided even for $\dim X\leq 2d+1$. For fixed $G$ and $d$, the algorithm runs in polynomial time. This yields the first algorithm for deciding topological embeddability of a $k$-dimensional finite simplicial complex int…
The usual way of defining weak equivalences for simplicial presheaves is to require an isomorphism on all sheaves of homotopy groups. We unravel some of the machinery here, and give a more concrete description in terms of local homotopy lifting properties. This characterization is used to prove some basic facts about the local homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves.
In a previous paper [21] the author studied the homotopy lifting property in the category dTop of directed spaces in the sense of M. Grandis [12], [13], [14]. The present paper, which is a continuation of aforementioned article, introduces and studies the directed weak homotopy property (dWCHP) and directed weak fibrations, extending to the category dTop the well known Dold's (or weak) - fibrations [6]. The dWCHP is characterized in several ways. Then the notion of a directed fibre homotopy equivalence (dFHE) between directed weak fibrations is studied. Some examples and counterexamples are gi…
Given a path-connected space $X$ and $H\leqπ_1(X,x_0)$, there is essentially only one construction of a map $p_H:(\widetilde{X}_H,\widetilde{x}_0)\rightarrow(X,x_0)$ with connected and locally path-connected domain that can possibly have the following two properties: $(p_{H})_{\#}π_1(\widetilde{X}_H,\widetilde{x}_0)=H$ and $p_H$ has the unique lifting property. $\widetilde{X}_H$ consists of equivalence classes of paths starting at $x_0$, appropriately topologized, and $p_H$ is the endpoint projection. For $p_H$ to have these two properties, $T_1$ fibers are necessary and unique path lifting is…
Homotopy theory folklore tells us that the sheaf defining the cohomology theory Tmf of topological modular forms is unique up to homotopy. Here we provide a proof of this fact, although we claim no originality for the statement. This retroactively reconciles all previous constructions of Tmf.
If P \to X is a topological principal K-bundle and \hat K a central extension of K by Z, then there is a natural obstruction class δ_1(P) in \check H^2(X,\uline Z) in sheaf cohomology whose vanishing is equivalent to the existence of a \hat K-bundle \hat P over X with P \cong \hat P/Z. In this paper we establish a link between homotopy theoretic data and the obstruction class δ_1(P) which in many cases can be used to calculate this class in explicit terms. Writing \partial_d^P \: π_d(X) \to π_{d-1}(K) for the connecting maps in the long exact homotopy sequence, two of our main results can be f…
Digital topology is part of the ongoing endeavour to understand and analyze digitized images. With a view to supporting this endeavour, many notions from algebraic topology have been introduced into the setting of digital topology. But some of the most basic notions from homotopy theory remain largely absent from the digital topology literature. We embark on a development of homotopy theory in digital topology, and define such fundamental notions as function spaces, path spaces, and cofibrations in this setting. We establish digital analogues of basic homotopy-theoretic properties such as the …
This presentation is the sequel of a paper published in GETCO'00 proceedings where a research program to construct an appropriate algebraic setting for the study of deformations of higher dimensional automata was sketched. This paper focuses precisely on detailing some of its aspects. The main idea is that the category of homotopy types can be embedded in a new category of dihomotopy types, the embedding being realized by the Globe functor. In this latter category, isomorphism classes of objects are exactly higher dimensional automata up to deformations leaving invariant their computer scienti…
We define a notion of homotopy Segal cooperad in the category of $ E_\infty $-algebras. This model of Segal cooperad that we define in the paper, which we call homotopy Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperad, covers examples given by the cochain complex of topological operads and provides a framework for the study of the homotopy of such objects. In a first step, we consider a category of Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperads, which consists of collections of $ E_\infty $-algebras indexed by trees and equipped with coproduct operators, corresponding to tree morphisms, together with facet operators, corr…
The theory of dendroidal sets has been developed to serve as a combinatorial model for homotopy coherent operads by Moerdijk and Weiss. An infinity-operad is a dendroidal set D satisfying certain lifting conditions. In this paper we give a definition of K-groups K_n(D) for a dendroidal set D. These groups generalize the K-theory of symmetric monoidal (resp. permutative) categories and algebraic K-theory of rings. We establish some useful properties like invariance under the appropriate equivalences and long exact sequences which allow us to compute these groups in some examples. We show that t…
We undertake a systematic study of the notion of fibration in the setting of abstract simplicial complexes, where the concept of `homotopy' has been replaced by that of `contiguity'. Then a fibration will be a simplicial map satisfying the `contiguity lifting property'. This definition turns out to be equivalent to a known notion introduced by G. Minian, established in terms of a cylinder construction $K \times I_m$. This allows us to prove several properties of simplicial fibrations which are analogous to the classical ones in the topological setting, for instance: all the fibers of a fibrati…
Parallel transport in a fibre bundle with respect to smooth paths in the base space B have recently been extended to representations of the smooth singular simplicial set Sing_{smooth}(B). Inspired by these extensions,I revisit the development of a notion of `parallel' transport in the topological setting of fibrations with the homotopy lifting property and then extend it to representations of Sing(B) on such fibrations. Closely related is the notion of (strong or `infty') homotopy action, which has variants under a variety of names.
Local properties of the fundamental group of a path-connected topological space can pose obstructions to the applicability of covering space theory. A generalized covering map is a generalization of the classical notion of covering map defined in terms of unique lifting properties. The existence of generalized covering maps depends entirely on the verification of the unique path lifting property for a standard covering construction. Given any path-connected metric space $X$, and a subgroup $H\leqπ_1(X,x_0)$, we characterize the unique path lifting property relative to $H$ in terms of a new clo…
We define Peano covering maps and prove basic properties analogous to classical covers. Their domain is always locally path-connected but the range may be an arbitrary topological space. One of characterizations of Peano covering maps is via the uniqueness of homotopy lifting property for all locally path-connected spaces. Regular Peano covering maps over path-connected spaces are shown to be identical with generalized regular covering maps introduced by Fischer and Zastrow. If $X$ is path-connected, then every Peano covering map is equivalent to the projection $\widetilde X/H\to X$, where $H$…
In his classical textbook on algebraic topology Edwin Spanier developed the theory of covering spaces within a more general framework of lifting spaces (i.e., Hurewicz fibrations with unique path-lifting property). Among other, Spanier proved that for every space $X$ there exists a universal lifting space, which however need not be simply connected, unless the base space $X$ is semi-locally simply connected. The question on what exactly is the fundamental group of the universal space was left unanswered. The main source of lifting spaces are inverse limits of covering spaces over $X$, or more …
