We define Peano covering maps and prove basic properties analogous to classical covers. Their domain is always locally path-connected but the range may be an arbitrary topological space. One of characterizations of Peano covering maps is via the uniqueness of homotopy lifting property for all locally path-connected spaces.
Regular Peano covering maps over path-connected spaces are shown to be identical with generalized regular covering maps introduced by Fischer and Zastrow. If $X$ is path-connected, then every Peano covering map is equivalent to the projection $\widetilde X/H\to X$, where $H$ is a subgroup of the fundamental group of $X$ and $\widetilde X$ equipped with the basic topology. The projection $\widetilde X/H\to X$ is a Peano covering map if and only if it has the unique path lifting property. We define a new topology on $\widetilde X$ for which one has a characterization of $\widetilde X/H\to X$ having the unique path lifting property if $H$ is a normal subgroup of $π_1(X)$. Namely, $H$ must be closed in $π_1(X)$. Such groups include $π(\mathcal{U},x_0)$ ($\mathcal{U}$ being an open cover of $X$) and the kernel of the natural homomorphism from the fundamental group to the Cech fundamental group.
We construct branched double coverings by certain direct products of manifolds for connected sums of copies of sphere bundles over the 2-sphere. As an application we answer a question of Kotschick and Loeh up to dimension five. More precisely, we show that: (1) every simply connected, closed four-manifold admits a branched double covering by a product of the circle with a connected sum of copies of $S^2 \times S^1$, followed by a collapsing map; (2) every simply connected, closed five-manifold admits a branched double covering by a product of the circle with a connected sum of copies of $S^3 \…
This paper pays a visit to a famous contractible open 3-manifold $W^3$ proposed by R. H. Bing in 1950's. By the finiteness theorem \cite{Hak68}, Haken proved that $W^3$ can embed in no compact 3-manifold. However, until now, the question about whether $W^3$ can embed in a more general compact space such as a compact, locally connected and locally 1-connected metric 3-space was not known. Using the techniques developed in Sternfeld's 1977 PhD thesis \cite{Ste77}, we answer the above question in negative. Furthermore, it is shown that $W^3$ can be utilized to produce counterexamples for every co…
We show that the classical example $X$ of a 3-dimensional generalized manifold constructed by van Kampen is another example of not homologically locally connected (i.e. not HLC) space. This space $X$ is not locally homeomorphic to any of the compact metrizable 3-dimensional manifolds constructed in our earlier paper which are not HLC spaces either.
Bredon has constructed a 2-dimensional compact cohomology manifold which is not homologically locally connected, with respect to the singular homology. In the present paper we construct infinitely many such examples (which are in addition metrizable spaces) in all remaining dimensions $n \ge 3$.
Using the covering involution on the double branched cover of the three-sphere branched along a knot, and adapting ideas of Hendricks-Manolescu and Hendricks-Hom-Lidman, we define new knot invariants and apply them to deduce novel linear independence results in the smooth concordance group of knots.
By a construction of Berstein and Edmonds every proper branched cover f between manifolds is a factor of a branched covering orbit map from a locally connected and locally compact Hausdorff space called the monodromy space of f to the target manifold. For proper branched covers between 2-manifolds the monodromy space is known to be a manifold. We show that this does not generalize to dimension 3 by constructing a self-map of the 3-sphere for which the monodromy space is not a locally contractible space.
In this paper, we study CAT(0) spaces with non-locally connected boundary. We give some condition of a CAT(0) space whose boundary is not locally connected.
We provide an infinite family of pared manifolds whose relative deformation spaces of hyperbolic structures on these manifolds are not locally connected. This is a natural extension of the recent result of Bromberg that shows the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected.
This paper constructs a continuous decomposition of the Sierpiński curve into acyclic continua one of which is an arc. This decomposition is then used to construct another continuous decomposition of the Sierpiński curve. The resulting decomposition space is homeomorphic to the continuum obtained from taking the Sierpiński curve and identifying two points on the boundary of one of its complementary domains. This outcome is shown to imply that there are continuum many topologically different one dimensional locally connected plane continua that are homogeneous with respect to monotone open maps…
We provide some properties and characterizations of homologically $UV^n$-maps and $lc^n_G$-spaces. We show that there is a parallel between recently introduced by Cauty algebraic $ANR$'s and homologically $lc^n_G$-metric spaces, and this parallel is similar to the parallel between ordinary $ANR$'s and $LC^n$-metric spaces. We also show that there is a similarity between the properties of $LC^n$-spaces and $lc^n_G$-spaces. Some open questions are raised.
For a connected, locally path connected space $X$, let $H$ be a subgroup of the fundamental group of $X$, $π_1(X,x)$. We show that there exists an open cover $\cal U$ of $X$ such that $H$ contains the Spanier group $π({\U},x)$ if and only if the core of $H$ in $π_1(X,x)$ is open in the quasitopological fundamental group $π_1^{qtop}(X,x)$ or equivalently it is open in the topological fundamental group $π_1^τ(X,x)$. As a consequence, using the relation between the Spanier groups and covering spaces, we give a classification for connected covering spaces of $X$ based on the conjugacy classes of s…
For any closed surface $S$ of genus $g \geq 2$, we show that the deformation space of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $S$, $AH(S \times I)$, is not locally connected. This proves a conjecture of Bromberg who recently proved that the space of Kleinian punctured torus groups is not locally connected. Playing an essential role in our proof is a new version of the filling theorem that is based on the theory of cone-manifold deformations developed by Hodgson, Kerckhoff, and Bromberg.
We prove that any closed simply-connected smooth 4-manifold is 16-fold branched covered by a product of an orientable surface with the 2-torus, where the construction is natural with respect to spin structures. In particular this solves Problem 4.113(C) in Kirby's list. We also discuss analogous results for other families of 4-manifolds with infinite fundamental groups.
We attach copies of the circle to points of a countable dense subset $D$ of a separable metric space $X$ and construct an earring space $E(X,D)$. We show that the fundamental group of $E(X,D)$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of the Hawaiian earring group, if the space $X$ is simply-connected and locally simply-connected. In addition if the space $X$ is locally path-connected, the space $X$ can be recovered from the fundamental group of $E(X,D)$.
Here we survey on the growth of systoles of arithmetic locally symmetric spaces under the congruence covering and give simple proofs for the best possible constants of Gromov for several important classes of symmetric spaces.
A smooth curve $γ: [0,1] \to S^2$ is locally convex if its geodesic curvature is positive at every point. J. A. Little showed that the space of all locally positive curves $γ$ with $γ(0) = γ(1) = e_1$ and $γ'(0) = γ'(1) = e_2$ has three connected components $L_{-1,c}$, $L_{+1}$, $L_{-1,n}$. The space $L_{-1,c}$ is known to be contractible but the topology of the other two connected components is not well understood. We prove that all connected components of $L_I$ are simply connected, that $H^2(L_{+1};Z) = Z^2$ and $H^2(L_{-1,n};Z) = Z$.
Let $M_i$ and $N_i$ be path-connected locally uniquely geodesic metric spaces that are not points and $f:\prod_{i=1}^m M_i\to \prod_{i=1}^n N_i$ be an isometry where $\prod_{i=1}^n N_i$ and $\prod_{i=1}^m M_i$ are given the sup metric. Then $m=n$ and after reindexing $M_i$ is isometric to $N_i$ for all $i$. Moreover $f$ is a composition of an isometry that reindexes the factor spaces and an isometry that is a product of isometries $f_i:M_i\to N_i$.

We show that the Kakimizu complex of a knot may be locally infinite, answering a question of Przytycki--Schultens. We then prove that if a link $L$ only has connected Seifert surfaces and has a locally infinite Kakimizu complex then $L$ is a satellite of either a torus knot, a cable knot or a connected sum, with winding number 0.
This article establishes the algebraic covering theory of quandles. For every connected quandle we explicitly construct a universal covering, which in turn leads us to define the algebraic fundamental group as the automorphism group of the universal covering. We then establish the Galois correspondence between connected coverings and subgroups of the fundamental group. Quandle coverings are thus formally analogous to coverings of topological spaces, and resemble Kervaire's algebraic covering theory of perfect groups. A detailed investigation also reveals some crucial differences, which we illu…
