Collisional effects can play an essential role in the dynamics of plasma waves by setting a minimum damping rate and by interfering with wave-particle resonances. Kinetic simulations of the effects of electron-ion pitch angle scattering on Electron Plasma Waves (EPWs) are presented here. In particular, the effects of such collisions on the frequency and damping of small-amplitude EPWs for a range of collision rates and wave phase velocities are computed and compared with theory. Both the Vlasov simulations and linear kinetic theory find the direct contribution of electron-ion collisions to wave damping is about a factor of two smaller than is obtained from linearized fluid theory. To our knowledge, this simple result has not been published before.
Simulations have been carried out using a grid-based (Vlasov) approach, based on a high-order conservative finite difference method for discretizing the Fokker-Planck equation describing the evolution of the electron distribution function. Details of the implementation of the collision operator within this framework are presented. Such a grid-based approach, which is not subject to numerical noise, is of particular interest for the accurate measurements of the wave damping rates.
A general solution to linearized Vlasov equation for an electron electrostatic wave in a homogeneous unmagnetized plasma is derived. The quasi-linear diffusion coefficient resulting from this solution is a continuous function of omega in contrast to that derived from the traditional Vlasov treatment. The general solution is also equivalent to the Landau treatment of the plasma normal oscillations, and hence leads to the well-known Landau damping.
The kinetic damping mechanism of low frequency transverse perturbations propagating parallel to the magnetic field in a magnetized warm electron plasma is simulated by means of electromagnetic (EM) Vlasov simulations. The short-time-scale damping of the electron magnetohydrodynamic whistler perturbations and underlying physics of finite electron temperature effect on its real frequency are recovered rather deterministically, and analyzed. The damping arises from an interplay between a global (prevailing over entire phase-space) and the more familiar resonant-electron-specific kinetic damping m…
The low-frequency limit of Maxwell equations is considered in the Maxwell-Vlasov system. This limit produces a neutral Vlasov system that captures essential features of plasma dynamics, while neglecting radiation effects. Euler-Poincaré reduction theory is used to show that the neutral Vlasov kinetic theory possesses a variational formulation in both Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinates. By construction, the model recovers all collisionless neutral models employed in plasma simulations. Then, comparisons between the neutral Vlasov system and hybrid kinetic-fluid models are presented in the line…
The gyrocenter phase-space transformation used to describe nonlinear gyrokinetic theory is rediscovered by a recursive solution of the Hamiltonian dynamics associated with the perturbed guiding-center Vlasov operator. The present work clarifies the relation between the derivation of the gyrocenter phase-space coordinates by the guiding-center recursive Vlasov method and the method of Lie-transform phase-space transformations.
We study Landau damping in the 1+1D Vlasov-Poisson system using a Fourier-Hermite spectral representation. We describe the propagation of free energy in phase space using forwards and backwards propagating Hermite modes recently developed for gyrokinetics [Schekochihin et al. (2014)]. The change in the electric field corresponds to the net Hermite flux via a free energy evolution equation. In linear Landau damping, decay in the electric field corresponds to forward propagating Hermite modes; in nonlinear damping, the initial decay is followed by a growth phase characterised by the generation o…
We analyze the Vlasov dispersion relation for Yukawa plasmas in three dimensions for the purpose of identifying coupling parameter domains where the Vlasov approach is justified and the existence of a well-developed RPA type collective excitation is allowed. We establish a rigorous lower bound for the coupling parameter, below which there can be no real solution to the Vlasov dispersion relation. In the coupling domain, where weakly damped solutions do exist, we have focused on the long-wavelength acoustic regime where we establish more restrictive estimates for the lower bound of the coupling…
Collisionless plasmas, such as those encountered in tokamaks, exhibit a rich variety of instabilities. The physical origin, triggering mechanisms and fundamental understanding of many plasma instabilities, however, are still open problems. We investigate the stability properties of a collisionless Vlasov plasma in a stationary homogeneous magnetic field. We narrow the scope of our investigation to the case of Maxwellian plasma. For the first time using a fully kinetic approach we show the emergence of the local instability, a transient growth, followed by classical Landau damping in a stable m…
We simulate magnetic reconnection in the GEM problem using a two-fluid model with 10 moments for the electron fluid as well as the proton fluid. We show that use of 10 moments for electrons gives good qualitative agreement with the the electron pressure tensor components in published kinetic simulations.
We revisit the contour dynamics (CD) simulation method which is applicable to large deformation of distribution function in the Vlasov-Poisson plasma with the periodic boundary, where contours of distribution function are traced without using spatial grids. Novelty of this study lies in application of CD to the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson plasma with the periodic boundary condition. A major difficulty in application of the periodic boundary is how to deal with contours when they cross the boundaries. It has been overcome by virtue of a periodic Green's function, which effectively introduces…
The Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian (Eq. (1) below) describes the interaction of a discrete harmonic oscillator with a continuous bath of harmonic oscillators. This system is a standard model of dissipation in macroscopic low temperature physics, and has applications to superconductors, quantum computing, and macroscopic quantum tunneling. The similarities between the Caldeira-Leggett model and the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation are analyzed, and it is shown that the damping in the Caldeira-Leggett model is analogous to that of Landau damping in plasmas [1]. An invertible linear transformatio…
In this paper, we study Landau damping in the weakly collisional limit of a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation with nonlinear collisions in the phase-space $(x,v) \in \mathbb T_x^n \times \mathbb R^n_v$. The goal is four-fold: (A) to understand how collisions suppress plasma echoes and enable Landau damping in agreement with linearized theory in Sobolev spaces, (B) to understand how phase mixing accelerates collisional relaxation, (C) to understand better how the plasma returns to global equilibrium during Landau damping, and (D) to rule out that collision-driven nonlinear instabilities dominate. W…
We have analyzed the Vlasov dispersion relation for Yukawa plasmas in three and two dimensions primarily for the purpose of identifying coupling parameter domains where the existence of well-developed collective excitations is forbidden or allowed. First, we have established a rigorous lower bound for the coupling parameter, below which there can be no real solution to the dispersion relation. In the coupling domain where weakly damped solutions do exist, we have focused on the long-wavelength acoustic regime where we have established more restrictive lower-bound estimates of the coupling para…
Effects of non-thermal high-energy electrons on Langmuir wave-particle interaction are investigated by an initial value approach. A Vlasov-Poisson simulation is employed which is based on the splitting scheme by Cheng and Knorr [Cheng, C.Z. and G. Knorr, 1976: J. Comput. Phys. 22, 330-351.]. The kappa distribution function is taken as an example of non-thermal electrons. The modification is manifested as an increase in the Landau damping rate and a decrease in the real frequency for a long wavelength limit. A part of the analyses by the modified plasma dispersion function [Summers, D. and R.M.…
The hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations is suitable to describe a magnetized plasma at scales of the order of or larger than proton kinetic scales. An exact stationary solution is presented by revisiting previous results with a uniform-density shear flow, directed either parallel or perpendicular to a uniform magnetic field, and by adapting the solution to the hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell model. A quantitative characterization of the equilibrium distribution function is provided by studying both analytically and numerically the temperature anisotropy and gyrotropy and the heat flux. In both cas…
Full self-consistent stationary Vlasov-Maxwell solutions of magnetically confined plasmas are built for systems with cylindrical symmetries. The stationary solutions are thermodynamic equilibrium solutions. These are obtained by computing the equilibrium distribution function resulting from maximizing the entropy and closing the equations with source terms that are then computed by using the obtained distribution. This leads to a self-consistent problem corresponding to solving a set of two coupled second order non-linear differential equations. Relevant plasma parameters are introduced and a …
A nonlinear kinetic equation for nonrelativistic quantum plasma with electromagnetic interaction of particles is obtained in the Hartree's mean-field approximation. It is cast in a convenient form of Vlasov-Boltzmann-type equation with "quantum interference integral", that allows for relatively straightforward modification of existing classical Vlasov codes to incorporate quantum effects (quantum statistics and quantum interference of overlapping particles wave functions), without changing the bulk of the codes. Such modification (upgrade) of existing Vlasov codes may provide a direct and effe…
A one dimensional Vlasov Poisson simulation code is employed to investigate the plasma sheath considering electron induced secondary electron emission (SEE) and backscattering. The SEE coefficient is commonly treated as constant in a range of plasma simulations, here improved SEE model of a charged dielectric wall is constructed which includes the wall charging effect on SEE coefficient and the energy dependency of SEE coefficient. Pertinent algorithms to implement above SEE model in plasma simulation are studied in detail. It is found that the SEE coefficient increases with the amount of nega…
Numerical diffusion is introduced by any numerical scheme as soon as small scales fluctuations, generated during the dynamical evolution of a collisionless plasma, become comparable to the grid size. Here we investigate the role of numerical dissipation in collisionless plasma simulations by studying the non linear regime of the two stream instability. We show that the long time evolution of the Vlasov - Poisson system can be affected by the used algorithm.
We study the expansion of ultracold neutral plasmas in the regime in which inelastic collisions are negligible. The plasma expands due to the thermal pressure of the electrons, and for an initial spherically symmetric Gaussian density profle, the expansion is self-similar. Measurements of the plasma size and ion kinetic energy using fluorescence imaging and spectroscopy show that the expansion follows an analytic solution of the Vlasov equations for an adiabatically expanding plasma.
A parallel, relativistic, three-dimensional particle-in-cell code SPACE has been developed for the simulation of electromagnetic fields, relativistic particle beams, and plasmas. In addition to the standard second-order Particle-in-Cell (PIC) algorithm, SPACE includes efficient novel algorithms to resolve atomic physics processes such as multi-level ionization of plasma atoms, recombination, and electron attachment to dopants in dense neutral gases. SPACE also contains a highly adaptive particle-based method, called Adaptive Particle-in-Cloud (AP-Cloud), for solving the Vlasov-Poisson problems…
These lecture notes were presented by Allan N. Kaufman in his graduate plasma theory course and a follow-on special topics course (Physics 242A, B, C and Physics 250 at the University of California Berkeley). The notes follow the order of the lectures. The equations and derivations are as Kaufman presented, but the text is a reconstruction of Kaufman's discussion and commentary. The notes were transcribed by Bruce I. Cohen in 1971 and 1972, and word-processed, edited, and illustrations added by Cohen in 2017 and 2018. The series of lectures are divided into four major parts: (1) collisionless …
A previous proof of non existence of tokamak equilibria with purely poloidal flow within macroscopic theory [Throumoulopoulos, Weitzner, Tasso, Physics of Plasmas Vol. 13, 122501 (2006)] motivated this microscopic analysis near magnetic axis for toroidal and "straight" tokamak plasmas. Despite the new exact solutions of Vlasov's equation found here, the structure of macroscopic flows remains elusive.
A hybrid model of the Vlasov equation in multiple spatial dimension $D>1$ [H. A. Rose and W. Daughton, Physics of Plasmas v. 18, 122109 (2011)], the Vlasov multi dimensional model (VMD), consists of standard Vlasov dynamics along a preferred direction, the $z$ direction, and $N$ flows. At each $z$ these flows are in the plane perpendicular to the $z$ axis. They satisfy Eulerian-type hydrodynamics with coupling by self-consistent electric and magnetic fields. Every solution of the VMD is an exact solution of the original Vlasov equation. We show convergence of the VMD Langmuir wave dispersion r…
We present a Vlasov, i.e. a kinetic Eulerian simulation study of nonlinear collisionless ion-acoustic shocks and solitons excited by an intense laser interacting with an overdense plasma. The use of the Vlasov code avoids problems with low particle statistics and allows a validation of particle-in-cell results. A simple original correction to the splitting method for the numerical integration of the Vlasov equation has been implemented in order to ensure the charge conservation in the relativistic regime. We show that the ion distribution is affected by the development of a turbulence driven b…
This review presents an upgraded wave theory adapted to the high fluctuation level of driven realistic i.e. non-idealized plasmas. Above all, this means giving up the well-known concept of a linear wave theory in favor of a thoroughly nonlinear theory. Based on the author's early publication (H. Schamel, Plasma Phys. 14 (1972) 905) and supported by recent Vlasov-Poisson simulations of realistic noisy plasmas, an extended framework is presented which not only covers the essential features of coherent hole structures, but which also enables to make the necessary corrections to the current wave t…
A long-standing challenge encountered in modeling plasma dynamics is achieving practical Vlasov equation simulation in multiple spatial dimensions over large length and time scales. While direct multi-dimension Vlasov simulation methods using adaptive mesh methods [J. W. Banks et al., Physics of Plasmas 18, no. 5 (2011): 052102; B. I. Cohen et al., November 10, 2010, http://meetings.aps.org/link/BAPS.2010.DPP.NP9.142] have recently shown promising results, in this paper we present an alternative, the Vlasov Multi Dimensional (VMD) model, that is specifically designed to take advantage of solut…
We present a new Vlasov code for collisionless plasmas in the nonrelativistic regime. A Darwin approximation is used for suppressing electromagnetic vacuum modes. The spatial integration is based on an extension of the flux-conservative scheme, introduced by Filbet et al. [J. Comp. Phys. Vol. 172 (2001) 166]. Performance and accuracy is demonstrated by comparing it to a standard finite differences scheme for two test cases, including a Harris sheet magnetic reconnection scenario. This comparison suggests that the presented scheme is a promising alternative to finite difference schemes.
Comparisons are presented between a hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) simulation of turbulence in a collisionless plasma and fluid reductions. These include Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (HMHD) and Landau fluid (LF) or FLR-Landau fluid (FLR-LF) models that retain pressure anisotropy and low-frequency kinetic effects such as Landau damping and, for the last model, finite Larmor radius (FLR) corrections. The problem is considered in two space dimensions, when initial conditions involve moderate-amplitude perturbations of a homogeneous equilibrium plasma subject to an out-of-plane magnetic field. LF turns …
Landau damping is the tendency of solutions to the Vlasov equation towards spatially homogeneous distribution functions. The distribution functions however approach the spatially homogeneous manifold only weakly, and Boltzmann entropy is not changed by Vlasov equation. On the other hand, density and kinetic energy density, which are integrals of the distribution function, approach spatially homogeneous states strongly, which is accompanied by growth of the hydrodynamic entropy. Such a behavior can be seen when Vlasov equation is reduced to the evolution equations for density and kinetic energy…
In this paper we study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous Maxwellian background distribution in $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$. In contrast with the confined case $\mathbb T^d _x \times \mathbb R_v ^d$, or the unconfined case $\mathbb R^d_x \times \mathbb R^d_v$ with screening, the dynamics of the disturbance are not scattering towards free transport as $t \to \pm \infty$: we show that the electric field decomposes into a very weakly-damped Klein-Gordon-type evolution for long waves and a Landau-damped evolution. The Klein-Gordon…
We prove cyclotron damping for the collisionless Vlasov-Maxwell equations on $\mathbb{T}_{x}^{3}\times\mathbb{R}_{v}^{3}$ under the assumptions that the electric induction is zero and $(\mathcal{\mathbf{PSC}})$ holds. It is a crucial step to solve the stability problem of the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. Our proof is based on a new dynamical system of the plasma particles, originating from Faraday Law of Electromagnetic induction and Lenz's Law. On the basis of it, we use the improved Newton iteration scheme to show the damping mechanism.
Kinetic Alfvén waves represent an important subject in space plasma physics, since they are thought to play a crucial role in the development of the turbulent energy cascade in the solar wind plasma at short wavelengths (of the order of the proton inertial length $d_p$ and beyond). A full understanding of the physical mechanisms which govern the kinetic plasma dynamics at these scales can provide important clues on the problem of the turbulent dissipation and heating in collisionless systems. In this paper, hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell simulations are employed to analyze in detail the features of the…
The Hamiltonian formulations for the perturbed Vlasov-Maxwell equations and the perturbed ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are expressed in terms of the perturbation derivative $\partial{\cal F}/\partialε\equiv [{\cal F}, {\cal S}]$ of an arbitrary functional ${\cal F}[\vbψ]$ of the Vlasov-Maxwell fields $\vbψ = ({\sf f},{\bf E},{\bf B})$ or the ideal MHD fields $\vbψ = (ρ,{\bf u},s,{\bf B})$, which are assumed to depend continuously on the (dimensionless) perturbation parameter $ε$. Here, $[\;,\;]$ denotes the functional Poisson bracket for each set of plasma equations and the pertu…
Ion acceleration due to the interaction between a short high-intensity laser pulse and a moderately overdense plasma target is studied using Eulerian Vlasov-Maxwell simulations. The effects of variations in the plasma density profile and laser pulse parameters are investigated, and the interplay of collisionless shock and target normal sheath acceleration is analyzed. It is shown that the use of a layered-target with a combination of light and heavy ions, on the front and rear side respectively, yields a strong quasi-static sheath-field on the rear side of the heavy-ion part of the target. Thi…
We study stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in laser-fusion conditions with the Eulerian Vlasov code ELVIS. Back SRS from homogeneous plasmas occurs in sub-picosecond bursts and far exceeds linear theory. Forward SRS and re-scatter of back SRS are also observed. The plasma wave frequency downshifts from the linear dispersion curve, and the electron distribution shows flattening. This is consistent with trapping and reduces the Landau damping. There is some acoustic ($ω\propto k$) activity and possibly electron acoustic scatter. Kinetic ions do not affect SRS for early times but suppress it late…
A theory for the ion acoustic wave damping in dense plasmas and warm dense matter, accounting for the Umklapp process, is presented. A higher decay rate compared to the prediction from the Landau damping theory is predicted for high-Z dense plasmas where the electron density ranges from $10^{21}$ to $ 10^{24} \mathrm{cm^{-3}}$ and the electron temperature is moderately higher than the Fermi energy.
The cosmic large-scale structures of the Universe are mainly the result of the gravitational instability of initially small density fluctuations in the dark-matter distribution. Dark matter appears to be initially cold and behaves as a continuous and collisionless medium on cosmological scales, with evolution governed by the gravitational Vlasov--Poisson equations. Cold dark matter can accumulate very efficiently at focused locations, leading to a highly non-linear filamentary network with extreme matter densities. Traditionally, investigating the non-linear Vlasov--Poisson equations was typic…
In a collisionless Vlasov-Poisson (V-P) electron plasma system, two types of modes for electric field perturbation exist: the exponentially Landau damped electron plasma waves and the initial-value sensitive ballistic modes. Here, the V-P system is modified slightly to a Vlasov-Ampere (V-A) system. A new constant residual mode is revealed. Mathematically, this mode comes from the Laplace transform of an initial electric field perturbation, and physically represents that an initial perturbation (e.g., external electric field perturbation) would not be damped away. Thus, this residual mode is mo…
Models of covariant linear electromagnetic constitutive relations are formulated that have wide applicability to the computation of susceptibility tensors for dispersive and inhomogeneous media. A perturbative framework is used to derive a linear constitutive relation for a globally neutral plasma enabling one to describe in this context a generalized Landau damping mechanism for non-stationary inhomogeneous plasma states.

In this paper, we consider the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equations in a weakly collisional regime and study the linear Boltzmann collision operator. We prove that Landau damping still occurs in this case.
Difficulties in founding microscopically the Vlasov equation for Coulomb-interacting particles are recalled for both the statistical approach (BBGKY hierarchy and Liouville equation on phase space) and the dynamical approach (single empirical measure on one-particle $(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{v})$-space). The role of particle trajectories (characteristics) in the analysis of the partial differential Vlasov--Poisson system is stressed. Starting from many-body dynamics, a direct derivation of both Debye shielding and collective behaviour is sketched.
Following the method in Ref.(1), this paper introduces a fundamental Lagrangian 1-form on the particle's coordinates, which determines the dynamics of all ions and electrons of the magnetized plasma with low-frequency magnetic perturbations. An Ampere-Vlasov model is utilized to model this fundamental Lagrangian 1-form based on a kind of coarse-grained scheme. With the Cary-Littlejohn single-parameter Lie transform method, a new fundamental Lagrangian 1-form on the gyrocenter coordinates is derived through transforming the one on particle's coordinates. This new 1-form determines the dynamics …
Previously developed method for finding asymptotic solutions of Vlasov equations using two-dimensional (in coordinate x and time t) Laplace transform is here applied to consider transversal oscillations and waves in low-collision quasi-neutral (n_i \simeq n_e) Maxwellian electron-ion plasmas. We obtain two branches of electron waves: the ubiquitous one of high-frequency and high-velocity oscillations and the unusual low-velocity one. Taking into account Coulomb collisions in the limit m_e << m_i, \bar{v_i} << \bar{v_e}, and T_e m_e << T_i m_i results in expressions for transversal plasma-elect…
Kinetic simulations based on the Eulerian Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) formalism permit the examination of plasma turbulence with useful resolution of the proton velocity distribution function (VDF). The HVM model is employed here to study the balance of energy, focusing on channels of conversion that lead to proton kinetic effects, including growth of internal energy and temperature anisotropies. We show that this Eulerian simulation approach, which is almost noise-free, is able to provide an accurate energy balance for protons. The results demonstrate explicitly that the recovered temperature…
Energy conserving particle-in-cell schemes are constructed for a class of reduced relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations of laser-plasma interaction. Discrete Poisson equation is also satisfied by the numerical solution. Specifically, distribution function is discretized using particle-in-cell method, discretization of electromagnetic fields is done using compatible finite element method in the framework of finite element of exterior calculus, and time discretization used is based on discrete gradient method combined with Poisson splitting. Numerical experiments of parametric instability are d…
The methods developed by authors are applied to some reductions of BBGKY hierarchy, namely, various examples of Vlasov-like systems which are important both for fusion modeling and for particular physical problems related to plasma/beam physics. We mostly concentrate on phenomena of localization and pattern formation.
In the paper, gridless particle techniques are presented in order to solve problems involving electrostatic, collisionless plasmas. The method makes use of computational particles having the shape of spherical shells or of rings, and can be used to study cases in which the plasma has spherical or axial symmetry, respectively. As a computational grid is absent, the technique is particularly suitable when the plasma occupies a rapidly changing space region.
We consider the two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system to model a two-component plasma whose distribution function is constant with respect to the third space dimension. First, we show how this two-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson system can be derived from the full three-dimensional system. The existence of compactly supported steady states with vanishing electric potential in a three-dimensional setting has already been investigated by A. L. Skubachevskii [15]. We show that his approach can easily be adapted to the two-dimensional system. However, our main result is to prove the existence of compac…
We present an extension of the multi-moment advection scheme (Minoshima et al., 2011, J. Comput. Phys.) to the three-dimensional case, for full electromagnetic Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasma. The scheme treats not only point values of a profile but also its zeroth to second order piecewise moments as dependent variables, and advances them on the basis of their governing equations. Similar to the two-dimensional scheme, the three-dimensional scheme can accurately solve the solid body rotation problem of a gaussian profile with little numerical dispersion or diffusion. This is a very im…
