We show that the absolute period foliation of the principal stratum of abelian differentials on a surface of genus at least 3 is ergodic. We also investigate the absolute period foliation of affine invariant manifolds.
In this paper we address the issues of absolute continuity for the center foliation (as well as the disintegration on the non-absolute continuous case) and rigidity of volume preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms isotopic to a linear Anosov on $\mathbb T^3$. It is shown that the disintegration of volume on center leaves may be neither atomic nor Lebesgue. It is also obtained results concerning the atomic disintegration. Moreover, the absolute continuity of the center foliation does not imply smooth conjugacy with its linearization. Imposing stronger conditions besides absolute contin…
We prove the absolute continuity of stable foliations for mappings of Banach spaces satisfying conditions consistent with time-t maps of certain classes of dissipative PDEs. This property is crucial for passing information from submanifolds transversal to the stable foliation to the rest of the phase space; it is also used in proofs of ergodicity. Absolute continuity of stable foliations is well known in finite dimensional hyperbolic theory. On Banach spaces, the absence of nice geometric properties poses some additional difficulties.
We show that for the C^1-open set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms constructed in (M. Shub and A. Wilkinson, "Pathological foliations and removable zero exponents," Invent. math. 139 (2000) 3, 495-508), Lebesgue measure on the 3-torus decomposes as atomic measure along the leaves of the central foliation.
Center foliations of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms may exhibit pathological behavior from a measure-theoretical viewpoint: quite often, the disintegration of the ambient volume measure along the center leaves consists of atomic measures. We add to this theory by constructing stable examples for which the disintegration is singular without being atomic. In the context of diffeomorphisms with mostly contracting center direction, for which upper leafwise absolute continuity is known to hold, we provide examples where the center foliation is not lower leafwise absolutely continuous.
In this work we completely classify $C^\infty$ conjugacy for conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to a linear Anosov automorphism on the 3-torus by its center foliation behavior. We prove that the uniform version of absolute continuity for the center foliation is the natural hypothesis to obtain $C^\infty$ conjugacy to its linear Anosov automorphism. On a recent work Avila, Viana and Wilkinson proved that for a perturbation in the volume preserving case of the time-one map of an Anosov flow absolute continuity of the center foliation implies smooth rigidity. The absolute…
According to the work of Dennis Sullivan, there exists a smooth flow on the 5-sphere all of whose orbits are periodic although there is no uniform bound on their periods. The question addressed in this article is whether these type of examples can occur in the partially hyperbolic context. That is, if does there exist a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of a compact manifold such that all the leaves of its center foliation are compact but there is no uniform bound for their volumes. We develop tools to attack the previous question and show that it has negative answer provided that all period…
We show the existence of a dense orbit for real Rel flows on the area-1 locus of every connected component of every stratum of holomorphic 1-forms with at least 2 distinct zeros. For this purpose, we establish a general density criterion for ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closures, based on finding an orbit of a real Rel flow whose closure contains a horocycle. This criterion can be verified using explicit constructions of holomorphic 1-forms with a periodic horizontal foliation. Our constructions also provide explicit examples of dense leaves of the absolute period foliation and many subfolia…
In this paper, we define the recurrence and "non-wandering" for decompositions. The following inclusion relations hold for codimension one foliations on closed $3$-manifolds: $\{$minimal$\} \sqcup \{$compact$\}$ $\subsetneq$ $\{$pointwise almost periodic$\}$ $\subsetneq$ $\{$recurrent$\}$ $\subsetneq$ $\{$non-wandering$\}$ $\subsetneq$ $\{$Reebless$\}$. A non-wandering codimension one $C^2$ foliation on a closed connected $3$-manifold which has no leaf with uncountably many ends is minimal (resp. compact) if and only if it has no compact (resp. locally dense) leaves. In addition, the fundament…
We consider the geodesic flow defined by periodic Eaton lens patterns in the plane and discover ergodic ones among those. The ergodicity result on Eaton lenses is derived from a result for quadratic differentials on the plane that are pull backs of quadratic differentials on tori. Ergodicity itself is concluded for $\mathbb{Z}^d$-covers of quadratic differentials on compact surfaces with vanishing Lyapunov exponents.
In this work we obtain some metric and ergodic properties of $C^{1+}$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional topological neutral center, mainly regarding the behavior of its center foliation. Based on a trichotomy for the center conditional measures of any invariant ergodic measure, we show that if these conditionals have full support, then the center foliation is leafwise absolutely continuous, the diffeomorphism is Bernoulli in the $C^{1+}$ case, and an invariance principle occurs in the sense that M may be covered by a finite number of open sets where the system of center…
We give a new proof of the classification of ${\rm GL}^+(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closures that are saturated for the absolute period foliation of the Hodge bundle. As a consequence, we obtain a short proof of the classification of closures of leaves of the absolute period foliation of the Hodge bundle. Our approach is based on a method for classifying ${\rm GL}^+(2,\mathbb{R})$-orbit closures using deformations of flat pairs of pants.
We analyze the rel leaf of the Arnoux-Yoccoz translation surface in genus 3. We show that the leaf is dense in the stratum $\mathcal{H}(2,2)^{\mathrm{odd}}$ but that the real-rel trajectory of the surface is divergent. On this real-rel trajectory, the vertical foliation of one surface is invariant under a pseudo-Anosov map (and in particular is uniquely ergodic), but the vertical foliations on all other surfaces are completely periodic.
We study a class of scalar differential equations on the circle $S^1$. This class is characterized mainly by the property that any solution of such an equation possesses exponential dichotomy both on the semi-axes $\R_+$ and $\R_+$. Also we impose some other assumptions on the structure of the foliation into integral curves for such the equation. Differential equations of this class are called gradient-like ones. As a result, we describe the global behavior of the foliation, introduce a complete invariant of uniform equivalency, give standard models for the equations of the distinguished class…
The moduli space of algebraic foliations on P2 of a fixed degree and with a center singularity has many irreducible components. We find a basis of the Brieskorn module defined for a rational function and prove that set of pull-back foliations forms an irreducible component of the moduli space. The main tools are the Picard-Lefschetz theory of a rational function in two variables, period integrals, and the Brieskorn module.
Here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined on the Elliptic region (where the Gaussian curvature $\mathcal K$ is positive) of an oriented surface immersed in $\mathbb R^3$. The leaves of the foliations are the lines of geometric mean curvature, along which the normal curvature is given by $\sqrt {\mathcal K}$, which is the geometric mean curvature of the principal curvatures $ k_1, k_2$ of the immersion. The singularities of the foliations are the umbilic points and parabolic curves}, where $ k_1 = k_2$ and ${\mathcal K} = 0$, respectively. Here are determined …
A meromorphic differential on a Riemann surface is said to be {\it real-normalized} if all its periods are real. Real-normalized differentials on Riemann surfaces of given genus with prescribed orders of their poles form real orbifolds whose topology is closely related to that of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces with marked points. Our goal is to develop tools to study this topology. We propose a combinatorial model for the real normalized differentials with a single order $2$ pole and use it to analyze the corresponding absolute period foliation.
Associated to oriented surfaces immersed in R^3 here are studied pairs of transversal foliations with singularities, defined on the Elliptic region, where the Gaussian curvature K, given by the product of the principal curvatures k_1, k_2 of the immersion, is positive. The leaves of the foliations are the lines of M- mean curvature, along which the normal curvature of the immersion is given by a function M = M(k_1,k_2) in [k_1, k_2], called a M- mean curvature, whose properties extend and unify those of the arithmetic H=(k_1+k_2)/2, the geometric K^{1/2} and harmonic K/H=((1/{k_1} + 1/{k_2})/2…
