We prove non-uniqueness and study the behaviour of viscosity solutions of a class of uniformly elliptic fully nonlinear equations of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman-Isaacs type, with quadratic growth in the gradient. The crucial a priori bound for the solutions is proved through an argument which uses a boundary growth lemma, and consequences such as boundary "half"-Harnack inequalities, which are of independent interest. Our results are new even for linear equations.
This paper is concerned with higher Hölder regularity for viscosity solutions to non-translation invariant second order integro-PDEs, compared to \cite{mou2018}. We first obtain $C^{1,α}$ regularity estimates for fully nonlinear integro-PDEs. We then prove the Schauder estimates for solutions if the equation is convex.
We present a general method for obtaining conservation laws for integrable PDE at negative regularity and exhibit its application to KdV, NLS, and mKdV. Our method works uniformly for these problems posed both on the line and on the circle.
This manuscript aims to provide a self-contained introduction to the regularity theory for elliptic PDE, focusing on the main ideas rather than proving all results in their greatest generality. It can be seen as a bridge between an elementary PDE course and more advanced textbooks. This is a draft of the book "Regularity Theory for Elliptic PDE". The final version has been published in Zurich Lectures in Advanced Mathematics, EMS Press, 2022.
We study the continuity in weighted Fourier Lebesgue spaces for a class of pseudodifferential operators, whose symbol has finite Fourier Lebesgue regularity with respect to $x$ and satisfies a quasi-homogeneous decay of derivatives with respect to the $ξ$ variable. Applications to Fourier Lebesgue microlocal regularity of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations are given.
We provide a broad overview on qualitative versus quantitative regularity estimates in the theory of degenerate parabolic pdes. The former relates to DiBenedetto's revolutionary method of intrinsic scaling, while the latter is achieved by means of what has been termed geometric tangential analysis. We discuss, in particular, sharp estimates for the parabolic p-Poisson equation, for the porous medium equation and for the doubly nonlinear equation.
We prove regularity estimates for weak solutions to the Dirichlet problem for a divergence form elliptic operator. We give $L^p$ estimates for the second derivative for $p<2$. Our work generalizes results due to Miranda [28].
In this manuscript we establish local Hölder regularity estimates for bounded solutions of a certain class of doubly degenerate evolution PDEs. By making use of intrinsic scaling techniques and geometric tangential methods, we derive sharp regularity estimates for such models, which depend only on universal and compatibility parameters of the problem. In such a scenario, our results are natural improvements for former ones in the context of nonlinear evolution PDEs with degenerate structure via a unified approach. As a consequence for our findings and approach, we address a Liouville type resu…
We study the doubly nonlinear PDE $$ |\partial_t u|^{p-2}\,\partial_t u-\textrm{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=0. $$ This equation arises in the study of extremals of Poincaré inequalities in Sobolev spaces. We prove spatial Lipschitz continuity and Hölder continuity in time of order $(p-1)/p$ for viscosity solutions. As an application of our estimates, we obtain pointwise control of the large time behavior of solutions.
We give full boundary extensions to two fundamental estimates in the theory of elliptic PDE, the weak Harnack inequality and the quantitative strong maximum principle, for uniformly elliptic equations in non-divergence form.
We are concerned with fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with superlinear terms with respect to $Du$. We prove several comparison principles among viscosity solutions which may be unbounded under some polynomial-type growth conditions. Our main result applies to PDEs with convex superlinear terms but we also obtain some results in nonconvex cases. Applications to monotone systems of PDEs are given.
We aim at reviewing and extending a number of recent results addressing stability of certain geometric and analytic estimates in the Riemannian approximation of subRiemannian structures. In particular we extend the recent work of the the authors with Rea [19] and Manfredini [17] concerning stability of doubling properties, Poincaré inequalities, Gaussian estimates on heat kernels and Schauder estimates from the Carnot group setting to the general case of Hörmander vector fields.
We establish the existence and sharp global regularity results ($C^{0, γ}$, $C^{0, 1}$ and $C^{1, α}$ estimates) for a class of fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs with unbalanced variable degeneracy. In a precise way, the degeneracy law of the model switches between two different kinds of degenerate elliptic operators of variable order, according to the null set of a modulating function. Such sharp regularity estimates generalize and improve, to some extent, earlier ones via geometric treatments. Our results are consequences of geometric tangential methods and make use of compactness, localized osc…
The goal of this paper is to investigate some rigidity properties of stable solutions of elliptic equations set on manifolds with boundary. We provide several types of results, according to the dimension of the manifold and the sign of its Ricci curvature.
We develop an optimal regularity theory for $L^p$-viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations in nondivergence form whose gradient growth is described through a Hamiltonian function with measurable and possibly unbounded coefficients. Our approach treats both superlinear and sublinear gradient regimes in a unified way. We show $C^{0,α}$, $C^{0,\textrm{Log-Lip}}$, $C^{1,α}$, $ C^{1,\textrm{Log-Lip}}$ and $C^{2,α}$ regularity estimates, by displaying the growth allowed to the Hamiltonian in order to deal with an unbounded nonlinear gradient coefficient, whose integrabilit…
We derive a comparison principle for a degenerate elliptic partial differential equation without boundary conditions which arises naturally in optimal learning strategies. Our argument is direct and exploits the degeneracy of the differential operator to construct (logarithmically) diverging barriers.
In this study we prove the existence-uniqueness of a coupled non-linear elliptic PDE system using Lax-Milgram theorem, Galerkin Method, Brouwer's fixed point theorem. Later we derive the finite element scheme for the numerical solution of the PDE system and also carry out the convergence analysis for the derived scheme. Further successfully apply the scheme to an application related to free convection phenomena.
In this paper, we establish $L^{\infty}$ and $L^{p}$ estimates for solutions of some polyharmonic elliptic equations via the Morse index. As far as we know, it seems to be the first time that such explicit estimates are obtained for polyharmonic problems.
In this paper we investigate regularity properties of weak solutions to a PDE system that arises in the study of biological transport networks. The system consists of a possibly singular elliptic equation for the scalar pressure of the underlying biological network coupled to a diffusion equation for the conductance vector of the network. There are several different types of nonlinearities in the system. Of particular mathematical interest is a term that is a polynomial function of solutions and their partial derivatives and this polynomial function has degree three. That is, the system contai…
We show that two classically known properties of positive supersolutions of uniformly elliptic PDEs, the boundary point principle (Hopf lemma) and global integrability, can be quantified with respect to each other. We obtain an extension to the boundary of the de Giorgi-Moser weak Harnack inequality, optimal with respect to the norms involved, for equations in divergence form.
We prove the following theorem: if $w$ is a quasiconformal mapping of the unit disk onto itself satisfying elliptic partial differential inequality $|L[w]|\le \mathcal{B}|\nabla w|^2+Γ$, then $w$ is Lipschitz continuous. This {result} extends some recent results, where instead of an elliptic differential operator is {only} considered {the} Laplace operator.
We obtain a global extension of the classical weak Harnack inequality which extends and quantifies the Hopf-Oleinik boundary-point lemma, for uniformly elliptic equations in divergence form. Among the consequences is a boundary gradient estimate, due to Krylov and well-studied for non-divergence form equations, but completely novel in the divergence framework. Another consequence is a new more general version of the Hopf-Oleinik lemma.
We describe a new method of proving a priori bounds for positive supersolutions and solutions of superlinear elliptic PDE, based on global weak Harnack inequalities and a quantitative Hopf lemma. Novel results based on the method include: (i) equations without a boundary condition on the whole boundary; (ii) equations with nonlinearities which do not have precise growth at infinity; (iii) systems of inequalities with opposite sign.
We consider degenerated nonlinear PDE of elliptic type: $$ - \mathrm{div}(a(|x|)|\nabla w(x)|^{p-2} \nabla w(x)) + h(|x|,w(x),\langle\nabla w(x),\frac{x}{|x|}\rangle)=ϕ(w(x)), $$ where $x$ belongs to the ball in $\bf{R}^n$. Using the argument based on Opial-type inequalities, we investigate qualitative properties of their radial solutions, like e.g. maximum principles, monotonicity, as well as nonexistence of the nontrivial solutions.
We study the averaging behavior of nonlinear uniformly elliptic partial differential equations with random Dirichlet or Neumann boundary data oscillating on a small scale. Under conditions on the operator, the data and the random media leading to concentration of measure, we prove an almost sure and local uniform homogenization result with a rate of convergence in probability.
In this paper we study the Hausdorff dimension of a elliptic measure $μ_{f}$ in space associated to a positive weak solution to a certain quasilinear elliptic PDE in an open subset and vanishing on a portion of the boundary of that open set. We show that this measure is concentrated on a set of $σ-$finite $n-1$ dimensional Hausdorff measure for $p>n$ and the same result holds for $p=n$ with an assumption on the boundary. We also construct an example of a domain in space for which the corresponding measure has Hausdorff dimension $\leq n-1-δ$ for $p\geq n$ for some $δ$ which depends on various …
We consider an elliptic Kolmogorov equation $λu - Ku = f$ in a separable Hilbert space $H$. The Kolmogorov operator $K$ is associated to an infinite dimensional convex gradient system: $dX = (AX - DU(X))dt + dW (t)$, where $A $ is a self--adjoint operator in $H$ and $U$ is a convex lower semicontinuous function. Under mild assumptions we prove that for $λ>0$ and $f\in L^2(H,ν)$ the weak solution $u$ belongs to the Sobolev space $W^{2,2}(H,ν)$, where $ν$ is the log-concave probability measure of the system. Moreover maximal estimates on the gradient of $u$ are proved. The maximal regularity res…
We introduce a notion of subunit vector field for fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations. We prove that an interior maximum of a viscosity subsolution of such an equation propagates along the trajectories of subunit vector fields. This implies strong maximum and minimum principles when the operator has a family of subunit vector fields satisfying the Hörmander condition. In particular these results hold for a large class of nonlinear subelliptic PDEs in Carnot groups. We prove also a strong comparison principle for degenerate elliptic equations that can be written in Hamilton-Jacobi-Bel…
We analyze a second order, linear, elliptic PDE with mixed boundary conditions. This problem arose as a limiting case of a Markov-modulated queueing model for data handling switches in communications networks. We use singular perturbation methods to analyze the problem. In particular we use the ray method to solve the PDE in the limit where convection dominates diffusion. We show that there are both interior and boundary caustics, as well as a cusp point where two caustics meet, an internal layer, boundary layers and a corner layer. Our analysis leads to approximate formulas for the queue leng…
In the present paper, we investigate the regularity and symmetry properties of weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations which are locally stable.
In this article, we will prove the existence of infinitely many positive weak solutions to the following nonlocal elliptic PDE. \begin{align} (-Δ)^s u&= \fracλ{u^γ}+ f(x,u)~\text{in}~Ω,\nonumber u&=0~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ,\nonumber \end{align} where $Ω$ is an open bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with Lipschitz boundary, $N>2s$, $s\in (0,1)$, $γ\in (0,1)$. We will employ variational techniques to show the existence of infinitely many weak solutions of the above problem.
We establish an optimal C^{1,α}-regularity for viscosity solutions of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear elliptic equations by finding minimal regularity requirements on the associated operator.
We study the regularity properties of a weak solution to the boundary value problem for the equation $-Δρ+a u=f$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, where $ρ=e^{-\mbox{div}\left(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u+β_0|\nabla u|^{-1}\nabla u\right)}$. This problem is derived from the mathematical modeling of crystal surfaces. It is known that the exponent term can exhibit singularity. In this paper we obtain a partial regularity result for the weak solution. It asserts that there exists an open subset $Ω_0\subset Ω$ such that $|Ω\setminusΩ_0|=0$ and the exponent term is locally bounded in $Ω_0$. …
In this note we study the global regularity in the Morrey spaces for the second derivatives for the strong solutions of non variational elliptic equations.
We obtain an explicit Hölder regularity result for viscosity solutions of a class of second order fully nonlinear equations leaded by operator that are neither convex/concave nor uniformly elliptic.
In this work we study regularity properties of solutions to fractional elliptic problems with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary data when dealing with the Spectral Fractional Laplacian.
We prove a $C^{1,α}$ interior regularity theorem for fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic integro-differential equations without assuming any regularity of the kernel. We then give some applications to linear theory and higher regularity of a special class of nonlinear operators.
We prove a Meyers type regularity estimate for approximate solutions of second order elliptic equations obtained by Galerkin methods. The proofs rely on interpolation results for Sobolev spaces on graphs. Estimates for second order elliptic operators on rather general graphs are also obtained.
It is shown that, for the bi-harmonic equation, an optimal regularity criterion of the vertex of typical paraboloids can be expressed in terms of Osgood-Dini integral conditions of Petrovskii's type for the heat equation derived in 1934. Some extensions of the first Fourier coefficent method to other PDEs are discussed. A survey on boundary point regularity for elliptic and parabolic PDEs is enclosed.
We develop a new, unified approach to the following two classical questions on elliptic PDE: the strong maximum principle for equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearities, and the at most exponential decay of solutions in the whole space or exterior domains. Our results apply to divergence and nondivergence operators with locally unbounded lower-order coefficients, in a number of situations where all previous results required bounded ingredients. Our approach, which allows for relatively simple and short proofs, is based on a (weak) Harnack inequality with optimal dependence of the constants in…
In this paper, we study the regularity of weak solutions to a class of nonlocal elliptic equations in Bessel potential spaces $H^{s,p}$. Our main results can be seen as an extension of the well-known $W^{1,p}$ regularity theory for local second-order elliptic equations in divergence form to the nonlocal setting.
We consider the inverse problem of determining a potential in a semilinear elliptic equation from the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. For bounded Euclidean domains we prove that the potential is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map measured at a single boundary point, or integrated against a fixed measure. This result is valid even when the Dirichlet data is only given on a small subset of the boundary. We also give related uniqueness results on Riemannian manifolds.
We establish sharp global regularity results for solutions to nonhomogeneous, nonunifomrly elliptic systems with zero boundary conditions. In particular, we obtain everywhere Lipschitz continuity under borderline Lorentz assumptions on the forcing term, thus positively settling the optimality issue raised in \cite{bdms}.
