The results of density functional theory calculations and measurements using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Co-nanoparticles dispersed on graphene/Cu are presented. It is found that for low cobalt thickness (0.02 nm - 0.06 nm) the Co forms islands distributed non-homogeneously which are strongly oxidized under exposure to air to form cobalt oxides. At greater thicknesses up to 2 nm the upper Co-layers are similarly oxidized whereas the lower layers contacting the graphene remain metallic. The measurements indicate a Co2+ oxidation state with no evidence of a 3+ state appearing at any Co thickness, consistent with CoO and Co[OH]2. The results show that thicker Co (2nm) coverage induces the formation of a protective oxide layer while providing the magnetic properties of Co nanoparticles.
We observe that gold atoms deposited by physical vapor deposition onto few layer graphenes condense upon annealing to form nanoparticles with an average diameter that is determined by the graphene film thickness. The data are well described by a theoretical model in which the electrostatic interactions arising from charge transfer between the graphene and the gold particle limit the size of the growing nanoparticles. The model predicts a nanoparticle size distribution characterized by a mean diameter D that follows a scaling law D proportional to m^(1/3), where m is the number of carbon layers…
We present classical molecular dynamics calculations of the behavior of copper and gold nanoparticles on a graphene sheet, sheared with a constant applied force $F_{\rm a}$. The force $F_{\rm s}$ acting on the particle from the substrate depends on the material of the nanoparticles (Au or Cu), and exhibits a sawtooth dependency on time, which we attribute to local commensurability between the metal nanoparticle surface atomic positions with the graphene lattice. The time-averaged value of $F_{\rm s}$ (the friction force) acting on Au nanoparticles increases linearly with the contact area, havi…
Shifting of the surface plasmon resonance wavelength induced by the variation of the thickness of insulating spacer between single layer graphene and Au nanoparticles is studied. The system demonstrates a blue shift of 29 nm as the thickness of the spacer layer increases from 0 to 15 nm. This is due to the electromagnetic coupling between the localized surface plasmons excited in the nanoparticles and the graphene film. The strength of the coupling decays exponentially with a decay length of d/R=0.36, where d is the spacer layer thickness and R is the diameter of the Au nanoparticles. The resu…
Molten metallic nanoparticles have recently been used to construct graphene nanostructures with crystallographic edges. The mechanism by which this happens, however, remains unclear. Here, we present a simple model that explains how a droplet can etch graphene. Two factors possibly contribute to this process: a difference between the equilibrium wettability of graphene and the substrate that supports it, or the large surface energy associated with the graphene edge. We calculate the etching velocities due to either of these factors and make testable predictions for evaluating the significance …
We report electron-beam activated motion of a catalytic nanoparticle along a graphene step edge and associated etching of the edge. This approach enables beam-controlled etching of matter through activated electrocatalytic processes. The applications of electron-beam control as a paradigm for molecular-scale robotics are discussed.
The specific role played by small gold nanoparticles supported on the rutile TiO2(110) surface in the processes of adsorption and dissociation of H2 is discussed. It is demonstrated that the molecular and dissociative adsorption of H2 on Au_n clusters containing n = 1, 2, 8 and 20 atoms depends on cluster size, geometry structure, cluster flexibility and the interaction with the support material. Rutile TiO2(110) support energetically promotes H2 dissociation on gold clusters. It is demonstrated that the active sites towards H2 dissociation are located at corners and edges on the surface of th…
The exceptional conducting nature of graphene makes it a viable candidate for enhancing the effectiveness of photocatalytic and biomedical nanomaterials. Herein, the immobilization of monodispersed silicon dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles on multiple graphene layers is demonstrated for intercalation of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Interestingly, the loading of graphene nanoplatelets with SiO2 nanoparticles enhances the photocatalytic efficiency from 46% to 99%. For biomedical applications, it is found that 75% of Gram positive and 50% of Gram negative bacteria have been killed, hence bacterial p…
We present theoretical calculations for the absorption properties of protein-coated gold nanoparticles on graphene and graphite substrates. As the substrate is far away from nanoparticles, numerical results show that the number of protein bovine serum molecules molecules aggregating on gold surfaces can be quantitatively determined for gold nanoparticles with arbitrary size by means of the Mie theory and the absorption spectra. The presence of graphitic substrate near protein-conjugated gold nanoparticles substantially enhances the red shift of the surface plasmon resonances of the nanoparticl…
The results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and measurements of X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and X-ray emission (XES) spectra of Co-nanoparticles dispersed on graphene/Cu composites are presented. It is found that for 0.02nm and 0.06nm Co coverage the Co atoms form islands which are strongly oxidized under exposure at the air. For Co (2nm) coverage the upper Co-layers is oxidized whereas the lower layers contacting with graphene is in metallic state. Therefore Co (2 nm) coverage induces the formation of protective oxide layer providing the ferromagnetic properties of Co nanopartic…
A review of the main phenomena related with the linear optical properties of isolated and supported metal nanoparticles is presented. The extinction, absorption and scattering efficiencies are calculated using the Mie theory and the Discrete Dipole Approximation. The origin of the optical spectra is discussed in terms of the size, shape and environment for each nanoparticle. The main optical features of each nanoparticle are identified, showing the tremendous potentiality of optical spectroscopy as a tool of characterization.
Based on combination of experimental measurements and first-principles calculations we report a novel carbon-based catalytic material and describe significant acceleration of the hydrogenation of magnesium at room temperature in presence of nickel nanoparticles wrapped in multilayer graphene. Increase of the rate of magnesium hydrogenation in contrast to the mix of graphite and nickel nanoparticles evidences intrinsic catalytic properties of explored nanocomposites. Results of simulations demonstrate that the doping from metal substrate and the presence of Stone-Wales defects turn multilayer g…
In this paper, we report on the charge transport properties of hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) based on the polymeric 1D compound [Fe(Htrz)2(trz)](BF4), which is one of the most promising SCO systems for designing electronic devices. In particular, we used for the first time hybrid SCO NPs covered with a silica shell and placed in between single-layer graphene electrodes. We evidence a reproducible thermal hysteresis loop in the conductance above room-temperature, meaning that no degradation of the current levels has been detected; we thus conclude that the robustness of the spin-transition is sign…
Advanced materials for electrocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting are central to the area of renewable energy. Here, we developed a solvothermal synthesis of MoS2 nanoparticles selectively on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets suspended in solution. The resulting MoS2/RGO hybrid material possessed nanoscopic few-layer MoS2 structures with abundant exposed edges stacked onto graphene, in strong contrast to large aggregated MoS2 particles grown freely in solution without GO. The MoS2/RGO hybrid exhibited superior electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) …

We developed two-step solution-phase reactions to form hybrid materials of Mn3O4 nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets for lithium ion battery applications. Mn3O4 nanoparticles grown selectively on RGO sheets over free particle growth in solution allowed for the electrically insulating Mn3O4 nanoparticles wired up to a current collector through the underlying conducting graphene network. The Mn3O4 nanoparticles formed on RGO show a high specific capacity up to ~900mAh/g near its theoretical capacity with good rate capability and cycling stability, owing to the intimate interacti…
We construct a simple thermodynamic model to describe the melting of a supported metal nanoparticle with a spherically curved free surface both with and without surface melting. We use the model to investigate the results of recent molecular dynamics simulations, which suggest the melting temperature of a supported metal particle is the same as that of a free spherical particle with the same surface curvature. Our model shows that this is only the case when the contact angles of the supported solid and liquid particles are similar. This is also the case for the temperature at which surface mel…
High surface area graphene sheets were obtained by electrochemical exfoliation of graphite in an acid media under constant potential conditions. Filtration and centrifugation processes played an important role in order to obtain stable dispersions in water. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging revealed highly exfoliated crystalline samples of ~5(\mum). Raman, FT-IR and XPS spectroscopy further confirmed the high quality of the exfoliated material. The electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) was decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNP) using …
The comment gives principal arguments proving that the claims given in the title of the commented paper and some its conclusions have to be wrong for principal reasons. An example illustrating the arguments is provided via atomistic simulation.
We present a graphene/Cu nanoparticle hybrids (G/CuNPs) system as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for adenosine detection. The Cu nanoparticles wrapped around a monolayer graphene shell were directly synthesized on flat quartz by chemical vapor deposition in a mixture of methane and hydrogen. The G/CuNPs showed an excellent SERS enhancement activity for adenosine. The minimum detected concentration of the adenosine in serum was demonstrated as low as 5 nM, and the calibration curve showed a good linear response from 5 to 500 nM. The capability of SERS detection of adenosin…
We examine thermal transport in graphene supported on SiO2 using molecular dynamics simulations. Coupling to the substrate reduces the thermal conductivity (TC) of supported graphene by an order of magnitude, due to damping of the flexural acoustic (ZA) phonons. However, increasing the strength of the graphene-substrate interaction enhances the TC of supported graphene, contrary to expectations. The enhancement is due to the coupling of graphene ZA modes to the substrate Rayleigh waves, which linearizes the dispersion and increases the group velocity of the hybridized modes. These findings sug…
With photothermal efficiency higher than traditionally used reduced graphene oxide, while simultaneously being water dispersible, we propose biocompatible Molybdenum Nanoribbons - gold Nanoparticles (MoS2 NR-Au NPs) system for synergistically enhanced photo-thermal ablation of cancerous cells (100% fatality) using NIR radiation (808nm), owing to commendable temperature rise above 70oC at a much faster rate.
First-principles calculations of the effect of carbon coverage on the atomic, electronic and magnetic structure of nickel and iron substrates demonstrate insignificant changes in the interatomic distances and magnetic moments on the atoms of the metallic substrates. The coverage of the iron surface by mono- and few-layer graphene induces significant changes in the orbital occupancies and exchange interactions between the layers in contrast to the case of a nickel substrate for which changes in the orbital ordering and exchange interactions are much smaller. Experimental measurements demonstrat…
It is promising to apply quantum-mechanically confined graphene systems in field-effect transistors. High stability, superior performance, and large-scale integration are the main challenges facing the practical application of graphene transistors. Our understandings of the adatom-graphene interaction combined with recent progress in the nanofabrication technology indicate that very stable and high-quality graphene nanostripes could be integrated in substrate-supported functionalized (hydrogenated or fluorinated) graphene using electron-beam lithography. We also propose that parallelizing a co…
Tunability of the surface plasmon resonance wavelength is demonstrated by varying the thickness of Al2O3 spacer layer inserted between the graphene and nanoparticles. By varying the spacer layer thickness from 0.3 to 1.8 nm, the resonance wavelength is shifted from 583 to 566 nm. The shift is due to a change in the electromagnetic field coupling strength between the localized surface plasmons excited in the gold nanoparticles and a single layer graphene film. In contrast, when the graphene film is absent from the system, no noticeable shift in the resonance wavelength is observed upon varying …
In the present paper, we observed both two-photon and three-photon induced distinct photoluminescence from GO nanoparticles under fs laser excitation. Conjugated with PEG molecules, GO nanoparticles exhibited high chemical stability, and could effectively label HeLa cells. Imaged with a two-photon scanning microscope, GO nanoparticles were observed to localize in the mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi and lysosome of HeLa cells. Furthermore, GO nanoparticles were micro-injected into the brain of a black mouse, and in vivo two-photon luminescence imaging illustrated that GO nanoparticle…
The electromagnetic enhancement for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) of graphene is studied by inserting a layer of Al2O3 between epitaxial graphene and Au nanoparticles. Different excitation lasers are utilized to study the relationship between laser wavelength and SERS. The theoretical calculation shows that the extinction spectrum of Au nanoparticles is modulated by the presence of graphene. The experimental results of the relationship between the excitation laser wavelength and the enhancement factor fit well with the calculated results. An exponential relationship is observed be…
Simple, yet versatile, methods to functionalize graphene flakes with metal (oxide) nanoparticles are in demand, particularly for the development of advanced catalysts. Herein, based on light-induced electrochemistry, a laser-assisted, continuous, solution route for the simultaneous reduction and modification of graphene oxide with catalytic nanoparticles is reported. Electrochemical graphene oxide (EGO) is used as starting material and electron-hole pair source due to its low degree of oxidation, which imparts structural integrity and an ability to withstand photodegradation. Simply illuminati…
The sticking probability of cold atomic hydrogen on suspended graphene calculated by Lepetit and Jackson [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107}, 236102 (2011)] does not include the effect of fluctuations from low-frequency vibrations of graphene. These fluctuations suppress the sticking probability for low incident energies ($\lesssim 15$ meV).
Heterogeneous catalysts consisting of supported metallic nanoparticles typically derive exceptional catalytic activity from their large proportion of under-coordinated surface sites which promote adsorption of reactant molecules. Simultaneously, these high energy surface configurations are unstable, leading to nanoparticle growth or degradation, and eventually a loss of catalytic activity. Surface morphology of catalytic nanoparticles is paramount to catalytic activity, selectivity, as well as degradation rates, however, it is well-known that harsh reaction conditions can cause the surface str…
The thermal behavior of free and alumina-supported iron-carbon nanoparticles is investigated via molecular dynamics simulations, in which the effect of the substrate is treated with a simple Morse potential fitted to ab initio data. We observe that the presence of the substrate raises the melting temperature of medium and large $Fe_{1-x}C_x$ nanoparticles ($x$ = 0-0.16, $N$ = 80-1000, non- magic numbers) by 40-60 K; it also plays an important role in defining the ground state of smaller Fe nanoparticles ($N$ = 50-80). The main focus of our study is the investigation of Fe-C phase diagrams as a…
Thermal conductivity $κ$ of both suspended and supported graphene has been studied by using molecular dynamics simulations. Obvious length dependence is observed in $κ$ of suspended single-layer graphene (SLG), while $κ$ of supported SLG is insensitive to the length. The simulation result of room temperature $κ$ of supported SLG is in good agreement with experimental value. In contrast to the decrease in $κ$ induced by inter-layer interaction in suspended few-layer graphene (FLG), $κ$ of supported FLG is found to increase rapidly with the layer thickness, reaching about 90% of that of bulk gra…
We formulate a nonlinear continuum model of a graphene sheet supported by a flat rigid substrate. The sheet is parallel to the substrate and loaded on a pair of opposite edges. A typical cross-section of the sheet is modeled as an elastica. We use elementary techniques from bifurcation theory to investigate how the buckling of the sheet depends on the boundary conditions, the composition of the substrate, and the length of the sheet. We also present numerical results that illustrate snap-buckling of the sheet.
We have investigated the electronic structure of graphene supported on Re(0001) before and after the intercalation of one monolayer of Ag by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations. The intercalation of Ag reduces the graphene-Re interaction and modifies the electronic band structure of graphene. Although the linear dispersion of the π state of graphene in proximity of the Fermi level highlights a rather weak graphene-noble metal layer interaction, we still observe a significant hybridization between the Ag bands and the π stat…
Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) exploits surface plasmons induced by the incident field in metallic nanostructures to significantly increase the Raman intensity. Graphene provides the ideal prototype two dimensional (2d) test material to investigate SERS. Its Raman spectrum is well known, graphene samples are entirely reproducible, height controllable down to the atomic scale, and can be made virtually defect-free. We report SERS from graphene, by depositing arrays of Au particles of well defined dimensions on graphene/SiO$_2$(300nm)/Si. We detect significant enhancements at 633nm. To…
We demonstrate a substrate-supported thermometry platform to measure thermal conduction in nanomaterials like graphene, with no need to suspend them. We use three-dimensional simulations and careful uncertainty analysis to optimize the platform geometry and to obtain the sample thermal conductivity. The lowest thermal sheet conductance that can be sensed with <50% error is ~25 nW/K at room temperature, indicating applicability of this platform to graphene or polymer thin films, nanotube or nanowire arrays, even a single Si nanowire. The platform can also be extended to plastic substrates, and …
Through direct nanoparticle nucleation and growth on nitrogen doped, reduced graphene oxide sheets and cation substitution of spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles, a manganese-cobalt spinel MnCo2O4/graphene hybrid was developed as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions. Electrochemical and X-ray near edge structure (XANES) investigations revealed that the nucleation and growth method for forming inorganic-nanocarbon hybrid results in covalent coupling between spinel oxide nanoparticles and N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rmGO) sheets. Carbon K-edg…
Graphene monolayers supported on oxide substrates have been demonstrated with superior charge mobility and thermal transport for potential device applications. Morphological corrugation can strongly influence the transport properties of the supported graphene. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the morphological stability of a graphene monolayer on an oxide substrate, subject to van der Waals interactions and in-plane mismatch strains. First, we define the equilibrium separation and the interfacial adhesion energy as the two key parameters that characterize the van der Waals interaction b…
Herein, we report an easy, straight forward, and versatile approach to build 0D/2D hybrid nanoparticle/graphene architectures by means of non-covalent chemistry and a modified Layer-by-Layer assembly. Three water soluble perylene diimides were employed to efficiently exfoliate pristine graphite into positively charged few- and multilayer graphene flakes. Further combination of these cationic building blocks with anionic zinc oxide nanoparticles led to the formation of tailor-made hybrid films via electrostatic and van der Waals interactions. These supramolecular hybrid nano-structures were tho…

Insights to the mechanism of CdSe nanoparticle attachment to carbon nanotubes following the hot injection method are discussed. It was observed that the presence of water improves the nanotube coverage while Cl containing media are responsible for the shape transformation of the nanoparticles and further attachment to the carbon lattice. The experiments also show that the mechanism taking place involves the right balance of several factors, namely, low passivated nanoparticle surface, particles with well-defined crystallographic facets, and interaction with an organics-free sp2 carbon lattice.…

To enhance efficiency of thermal contact between free-standing conductive nanoparticles were previously proposed. This work report for the first time the investigation of molecular junctions within a graphene polymer nanocomposite. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal transport efficiency of molecular junctions in p…
One of the salient features of graphene is the very high carrier mobility that implies tremendous potential for use in electronic devices. Unfortunately, transport measurements find the expected high mobility only in freely suspended graphen. When supported on a surface, graphene shows a strongly reduced mobility, and an especially severe reduction for temperatures above 200 K. A temperature-dependent mobility reduction could be explained by scattering of carriers with phonons, but this is expected to be weak for pristine, weakly-doped graphene. The mobility reduction has therefore been ascrib…
Hybrid systems composed of the reduced graphene oxide-supported platinum and multiwall carbon nanotubes-supported iridium (both noble metals utilized at low loadings on the level of 15 and < 5 microg cm-2, respectively) have been considered as catalytic materials for the reduction of oxygen in acid media (0.5 mol dm-3 H2SO4). The electrocatalytic activity toward reduction of oxygen and formation of hydrogen peroxide intermediate have been tested using rotating ring-disk electrode voltammetric experiments. The efficiency of the proposed catalytic systems has also been addressed by performing ga…
We study gate field effects on the Mn$_{12}$O$_{12}$(COOH)$_{16}$(H$_2$O)$_4$ | graphene | GaAs heterostructure via first-principles calculations. We find that under moderate doping levels electrons can be added to but not taken from the single-molecule magnet Mn$_{12}$O$_{12}$(COOH)$_{16}$(H$_2$O)$_4$ (Mn$_{12}$). The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Mn$_{12}$ decreases as the electron doping level increases, due to electron transfer from graphene to Mn$_{12}$ and change in the band alignment between Mn$_{12}$ and graphene. At an electron doping level of $-5.00 \times 10^{13}\, \textrm{cm}…
An ideal support for electron microscopy shall be as thin as possible and interact as little as possible with the primary electrons. Since graphene is atomically thin and made up of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, the potential to use graphene as substrate in electron microscopy is enormous. Until now graphene has hardly ever been used for this purpose because the cleanliness of freestanding graphene before or after deposition of the objects of interest was insufficient. We demonstrate here by means of low-energy electron holographic imaging that freestanding graphene prepared wi…
