The solar photospheric oxygen abundance is still widely debated. Adopting the solar chemical composition based on the "low" oxygen abundance, as determined with the use of three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical model atmospheres, results in a well-known mismatch between theoretical solar models and helioseismic measurements that is so far unresolved. We carry out an independent redetermination of the solar oxygen abundance by investigating the center-to-limb variation of the OI IR triplet lines at 777 nm in different sets of spectra with the help of detailed synthetic line profiles based on 3D hydrodynamical CO5BOLD model atmospheres and 3D non-LTE line formation calculations with NLTETD. The idea is to simultaneously derive the oxygen abundance,A(O), and the scaling factor SH that describes the cross-sections for inelastic collisions with neutral hydrogen relative the classical Drawin formula. The best fit of the center-to-limb variation of the triplet lines achieved with the CO5BOLD 3D solar model is clearly of superior quality compared to the line profile fits obtained with standard 1D model atmospheres. Our best estimate of the 3D non-LTE solar oxygen abundance is A(O) = 8.76 +/- 0.02, with the scaling factor SH in the range between 1.2 and 1.8. All 1D non-LTE models give much lower oxygen abundances, by up to -0.15 dex. This is mainly a consequence of the assumption of a $μ$-independent microturbulence.
In this work we present first results of our current project aimed at combining the 3D hydrodynamical stellar atmosphere approach with non-LTE (NLTE) spectral line synthesis for a number of key chemical species. We carried out a full 3D-NLTE spectrum synthesis of the oxygen IR 777 nm triplet, using a modified and improved version of our NLTE3D package to calculate departure coefficients for the atomic levels of oxygen in a CO5BOLD 3D hydrodynamical solar model atmosphere. Spectral line synthesis was subsequently performed with the Linfor 3D code. In agreement with previous studies, we find tha…

The interpretation of water lines in red supergiant stellar atmospheres has been much debated over the past decade. The introduction of the so-called MOLspheres to account for near-infrared "extra" absorption has been controversial. We propose that non-LTE effects should be taken into account before considering any extra-photospheric contribution. After a brief introduction on the radiative transfer treatment and the inadequacy of classical treatments in the case of large-scale systems such as molecules, we present a new code, based on preconditioned Krylov subspace methods. Preliminary result…
Context: There is a lively debate about the solar oxygen abundance and the role of 3D models in its recent downward revision. The models have been tested using high resolution solar atlases. Further testing can be done using centre-to-limb variations. Aims: Using high quality observations of oxygen lines across the solar surface we seek to test if the 3D and 1D models reproduce their observed centre-to-limb variation (CLV). In particular we seek to assess whether the 3D model is appropriate to derive the solar oxygen abundance. Methods: We use our recent observations of OI 777 nm, OI 615.81 nm…
We present multilevel radiative transfer modeling of the scattering polarization observed in the solar O I infrared triplet around 777 nm. We demonstrate that the scattering polarization pattern observed on the solar disk forms in the chromosphere, far above the photospheric region where the bulk of the emergent intensity profiles originates. We study the sensitivity of the polarization pattern to the thermal structure of the solar atmosphere and to the presence of weak magnetic fields (0.01 - 100 G) through the Hanle effect, showing that the scattering polarization signals of the oxygen infra…
We have performed a NLTE analysis of the infrared oxygen triplet for a large number of cepheid spectra obtained with the Hobby-Eberly telescope. These data were combined with our previous NLTE results for the stars observed with Max Planck Gesellschaft telescope with the aim to investigate oxygen abundance distribution in Galactic thin disc. We find the slope of the radial (O/H) gradient value to be equal -0.058 dex/kpc. Nevertheless, we found that there could be a hint that the distribution might become flatter in the outer parts of the disc. This is also supported by other authors who studie…
For the first time, a direct NLTE analysis of carbon and nitrogen lines in the spectra of nine RR Lyrae stars was carried out. We have determined the abundances of these elements together with oxygen, and have shown that the nitrogen content is increased in metallicity deficient program stars. We conclude that this is a sign of the first dredge up, which occurred at the previous stage of the red giant branch, and brought material processed in an incomplete CNO cycle to the surface of the star. This effect is significantly enhanced by thermohaline (extra-) mixing, which is more effective for me…
We investigate the linear correlation coefficient between the intensities at different wavelengths in photospheric and chromospheric spectral lines. Waves that propagate vertically through the stratified solar atmosphere affect different wavelengths at different times. This leads to a characteristic pattern of (non-)coherence of the intensity at various wavelengths. We derived the correlation matrices for several photospheric and chromospheric spectral lines from observations. For comparison with the observations, we calculate correlation matrices for spectra from LTE modeling approaches, 1-D …
The purpose of this work is to better understand the confidence limits of the photospheric solar oxygen abundance derived from three-dimensional models using the forbidden [OI] line at 6300 Å, including correlations with other parameters involved. We worked with a three-dimensional empirical model and two solar intensity atlases. We employed Bayesian inference as a tool to determine the most probable value for the solar oxygen abundance given the model chosen. We considered a number of error sources, such as uncertainties in the continuum derivation, in the wavelength calibration and in the ab…
The solar photospheric abundance of oxygen is still a matter of debate. For about ten years some determinations have favoured a low oxygen abundance which is at variance with the value inferred by helioseismology. Among the oxygen abundance indicators, the forbidden line at 630nm has often been considered the most reliable even though it is blended with a NiI line. In Papers I and Paper II of this series we reported a discrepancy in the oxygen abundance derived from the 630nm and the subordinate [OI] line at 636nm in dwarf stars, including the Sun. Here we analyse several, in part new, solar o…
Motivated by the controversy over the surface metallicity of the Sun, we present a re-analysis of the solar photospheric oxygen (O) abundance. New atomic models of O and Ni are used to perform Non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) calculations with 1D hydrostatic (MARCS) and 3D hydrodynamical (Stagger and Bifrost) models. The Bifrost 3D MHD simulations are used to quantify the influence of the chromosphere. We compare the 3D NLTE line profiles with new high-resolution, R = 700 000, spatially-resolved spectra of the Sun obtained using the IAG FTS instrument. We find that the O I lines at 7…
We present accurate methods of abundance determination based on the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for carbon, oxygen, calcium, titanium, and iron in the atmospheres of BAF-type stars. For C I-II, O I, Ca I-II, and Ti I-II, their comprehensive model atoms were described in our previous papers. A fairly complete model atom of Fe I-II is first applied in this study. We determine the NLTE abundances of the nine BAF-type stars with well-determined atmospheric parameters, using high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectral observations in the broad wavelength ra…
Aims. We report the results of a novel determination of the solar oxygen abundance using spatially resolved observations and inversions. We seek to derive the photospheric solar oxygen abundance with a method that is robust against uncertainties in the model atmosphere. Methods. We use observations with spatial resolution obtained at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) to derive the oxygen abundance at 40 different spatial positions in granules and intergranular lanes. We first obtain a model for each location by inverting the Fe I lines with the NICOLE inversion code. These models are then integ…
Weak line emission originating in the photosphere is well known from O stars and widely used for luminosity classification. The physical origin of the line emission are NLTE effects, most often optical pumping by far-UV lines. Analogous lines in B stars of lower luminosity are identified in radially pulsating $β$ Cephei stars. Their diagnostic value is shown for radially pulsating stars, as these lines probe a much larger range of the photosphere than absorption lines, and can be traced to regions where the pulsation amplitude is much lower than seen in the absorption lines.
In the Sun, the two forbidden [OI] lines at 630 and 636 nm were previously found to provide discrepant oxygen abundances. aims: We investigate whether this discrepancy is peculiar to the Sun or whether it is also observed in other stars. method: We make use of high-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of four dwarf to turn-off stars, five giant stars, and one sub-giant star observed with THEMIS, HARPS, and UVES to investigate the coherence of the two lines. results: The two lines provide oxygen abundances that are consistent, within observational errors, in all the giant stars examin…
We started a program to construct several grids of suitable model atmospheres and synthetic spectra for hot subdwarf O stars computed, for comparative purposes, in LTE, NLTE, with and without metals. For the moment, we use our grids to perform fits on our spectrum of SDSS J160043.6+074802.9 (J1600+0748 for short), this unique pulsating sdO star. Our best fit is currently obtained with NLTE model atmospheres including carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in solar abundances, which leads to the following parameters for SDSS J1600+0748 : Teff = 69 060 +/- 2080 K, log g = 6.00 +/- 0.09 and log N(He)/N(H) =…
Aluminium plays a key role in studies of the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy and of globular clusters. However, strong deviations from LTE (non-LTE) are known to significantly affect the inferred abundances in giant and metal-poor stars. We present NLTE modeling of aluminium using recent and accurate atomic data, in particular utilizing new transition rates for collisions with hydrogen atoms, without the need for any astrophysically calibrated parameters. For the first time, we perform 3D NLTE modeling of aluminium lines in the solar spectrum. We also compute and make available extensive gri…
The aim of this paper is to analyse the validity of the Dopplergram and lambda-meter techniques for the Doppler diagnostics of solar photospheric velocities using the BaII 4554 A line. Both techniques are evaluated by means of NLTE radiative transfer calculations of the BaII 4554 A line in a three-dimensional hydrodynamical model of solar convection. We consider the cases of spatially unsmeared profiles and the profiles smeared to the resolution of ground-based observations. We find that: (i) Speckle-reconstructed Dopplergram velocities reproduce the ``true'' velocities well at heights around …
Aims: we seek to provide additional tests of the line formation of theoretical 3D solar photosphere models. In particular, we set out to test the spatially-resolved line formation at several viewing angles, from the solar disk-centre to the limb and focusing on atomic oxygen lines. The purpose of these tests is to provide additional information on whether the 3D model is suitable to derive the solar oxygen abundance. We also aim to empirically constrain the NLTE recipes for neutral hydrogen collisions, using the spatially-resolved observations of the OI 777 nm lines. Methods: using the Swedish…
In order to investigate the carbon-to-oxygen ratio of the young open cluster M45 (Pleiades), the C and O abundances of selected 32 F-G type dwarfs (in the effective temperature range of Teff~5800-7600K and projected rotational velocity range of vesini~10-110km/s) belonging to this cluster were determined by applying the synthetic spectrum-fitting technique to C I 5380 and O I 6156-8 lines. The non-LTE corrections for these C I and O I lines were found to be practically negligible (less than a few hundredths dex). The resulting C and O abundances (along with the Fe abundance) turned out nearly …
CONTEXT: In recent years, the solar chemical abundances have been studied in considerable detail because of discrepant values of solar metallicity inferred from different indicators, i.e., on the one hand, the "sub-solar" photospheric abundances resulting from spectroscopic chemical composition analyses with the aid of 3D hydrodynamical models of the solar atmosphere, and, on the other hand, the high metallicity inferred by helioseismology. AIMS: After investigating the solar oxygen abundance using a CO5BOLD 3D hydrodynamical solar model in previous work, we undertake a similar approach studyi…
This paper forms the second part of our study on how the neglect of NLTE conditions in the formation of Fe I 6301.5 A and the 6302.5 A lines influences the atmosphere obtained by inverting their profiles in LTE. The main cause of NLTE effects is the line opacity deficit due to the excess ionization of the Fe I atoms by the UV photons in the Sun. In the first paper, the above photospheric lines were assumed to have formed in 1DNLTE and the effects of horizontal radiation transfer (RT) were neglected. In the present paper, the iron lines are computed in 3DNLTE. We investigate the influence of ho…

Our recent re-analysis of the solar photospheric spectra with non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) models resulted in higher metal abundances compared to previous works. When applying the new chemical abundances to Standard Solar Model calculations, the new composition resolves the long-standing discrepancies with independent constraints on the solar structure from helioseismology. Critical to the determination of chemical abundances is the accuracy of the atomic data, specially the $f$-values, used in the radiative transfer models. Here we describe in detail the calculations of $f$-v…
Based on the spectrum fitting method applied to CI 5380, NI 7486, and OI 6156-8 lines, we determined the abundances of C, N, and O for 100 mostly A-type main-sequence stars (late B through early F at 11000K>Teff>7000K) comprising normal stars as well as non-magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars in the projected rotational velocity range of 0km/s<vsini<100km/s, where our aim was to investigate the abundance anomalies of these elements in terms of mutual correlation, dependence upon stellar parameters, and difference between normal and CP stars. We found that CNO are generally underabundant (r…
Spectral analyses of hot, compact stars with NLTE (non-local thermodynamical equilibrium) model-atmosphere techniques allow the precise determination of photospheric parameters. The derived photospheric metal abundances are crucial constraints for stellar evolutionary theory. Previous spectral analyses of the exciting star of the nebula A 35, BD-22 3467, were based on He+C+N+O+Si+Fe models only. For our analysis, we use state-of-the-art fully metal-line blanketed NLTE model atmospheres that consider opacities of 23 elements from hydrogen to nickel. For the analysis of high-resolution and high-…
We aim to determine abundances of Li, O and Na in a sample of of 110 turn-off (TO) stars, in order to study the evolution of light elements in this cluster and to put our results in perspective with observations of other globular and open clusters, as well as with field stars. We use medium resolution spectra obtained with the GIRAFFE spectrograph at the ESO 8.2m Kueyen VLT telescope and use state of the art 1D model atmospheres and NLTE line transfer to determine the abundances. We also employ CO5BOLD hydrodynamical simulations to assess the impact of stellar granulation on the line formation…

Half a year after its outburst in September 2002, nova V4743 Sgr evolved into the brightest supersoft X-ray source in the sky with a flux maximum around 30A. We calculated grids of synthetic energy distributions (SEDs) based on NLTE model atmospheres for the analysis of the hottest white dwarfs and present the result of fits to Chandra and XMM-Newton grating X-ray spectra of V4743 Sgr of outstanding quality, exhibiting prominent resonance lines of C V, C VI, N VI, N VII, and O VII in absorption. The nova reached its highest effective temperature (Teff = 740 +/- 70kK) around April 2003 and rema…
The non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation of neutral boron in the atmospheres of cool stars are investigated. Our results confirm that NLTE effects for the B I resonance lines, which are due to a combination of overionization and optical pumping effects, are most important for hot, metalpoor, and low-gravity stars; however, the amplitude of departures from LTE found by this work are smaller than that of previous studies. In addition, our calculation shows that the line formation of B I will get closer to LTE if the strength of collisions with neutral hydrogen increases, whi…
In this work, we present a photospheric solar silicon abundance derived using CO5BOLD model atmospheres and the LINFOR3D spectral synthesis code. Previous works have differed in their choice of a spectral line sample and model atmosphere as well as their treatment of observational material, and the solar silicon abundance has undergone a downward revision in recent years. We additionally show the effects of the chosen line sample, broadening due to velocity fields, collisional broadening, model spatial resolution, and magnetic fields. CO5BOLD model atmospheres for the Sun were used in conjunct…
H-rich, DA-type white dwarfs are particularly suited as primary standard stars for flux calibration. State-of-the-art NLTE models consider opacities of species up to trans-iron elements and provide reliable synthetic stellar-atmosphere spectra to compare with observation. We establish a database of theoretical spectra of stellar flux standards that are easily accessible via a web interface. In the framework of the Virtual Observatory, the German Astrophysical Virtual Observatory developed the registered service TheoSSA. It provides easy access to stellar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) an…
We constructed a comprehensive model atom for NeI -- NeII using the most up-to-date atomic data available and evaluated the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for NeI and NeII in classical 1D models representing the atmospheres of B-type stars. We find that the large NLTE strengthening of the NeI lines corresponding to the 2p$^5$3p $-$ 2p$^5$3s transitions array occurs due to extremely small photoionization cross-sections of 2p$^5$3s levels that leads to strong overpopulation of these levels relative to their LTE populations. The deviations from LTE for the most NeII lin…
SMSS J031300.36-670839.3 (hereafter SM0313-6708) is a sub-giant halo star, with no detectable Fe lines and large overabundances of C and Mg relative to Ca. We obtained VLT-UVES spectra extending to 3060 Angstroms showing strong OH A-X band lines enabling an oxygen abundance to be derived. The OH A-X band lines in SM0313-6708 are much stronger than the CH C-X band lines. Spectrum synthesis fits indicate an [O/C] ratio of 0.02 +- 0.175. Our high S/N UVES data also enabled us to lower the Fe abundance limit to [Fe/H]{3D},NLTE < -7.52 (3 sigma). These data support our previous suggestion that the …
Initial C/O ratios of circumstellar disks have been obtained in solar-type stars by differential photospheric abundance analysis with respect to the Sun. We present C/O ratios of M dwarfs obtained by absolute abundance analysis derived from CO and H2O spectra in the K-band. We compare the distributions of C/O ratios in M dwarfs and solar-type stars using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The C/O distribution of M dwarfs is consistent with low frequency of high C/O ratios in solar-type stars.
We present nebular phase optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the Type IIP supernova SN 2012aw combined with NLTE radiative transfer calculations applied to ejecta from stellar evolution/explosion models. Our spectral synthesis models generally show good agreement with the ejecta from a MZAMS = 15 Msun progenitor star. The emission lines of oxygen, sodium, and magnesium are all consistent with the nucleosynthesis in a progenitor in the 14 - 18 Msun range. We also demonstrate how the evolution of the oxygen cooling lines of [O I] 5577 A, [O I] 6300 A, and [O I] 6364 A can be used to constr…

The importance of magnetic fields in three-dimensional magnetoconvection models of the Sun's photosphere is investigated in terms of their influence on the continuum intensity at different viewing inclination angles, and on the intensity profile of two [O I] spectral lines. We use the RH numerical radiative transfer code to perform a posteriori spectral synthesis on the same time-series of magnetoconvection models used in our publications on the effect of magnetic fields on abundance determination. We obtain a good match of the synthetic disc-centre continuum intensity to the absolute continuu…
To analyze spectra of hot stars, advanced non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model-atmosphere techniques are mandatory. Reliable atomic data is for the calculation of such model atmospheres. We aim to calculate new Sr IV - VII oscillator strengths to identify for the first time Sr spectral lines in hot white dwarf (WD) stars and to determine the photospheric Sr abundances. o measure the abundances of Se, Te, and I in hot WDs, we aim to compute new Se V, Te VI, and I VI oscillator strengths. To consider radiative and collisional bound-bound transitions of Se V, Sr IV - VII, Te VI, and I…
For the spectral analysis of spectra of hot stars with a high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N), advanced non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres are mandatory. These are strongly dependent on the reliability of the atomic data that are used for their calculation. Reliable Xe VI oscillator strengths are used to identify Xe lines in the ultraviolet spectrum of the DO-type white dwarf RE0503-289 and to determine its photospheric Xe abundance. We publish newly calculated oscillator strengths that are based on a recently measured Xe VI laboratory line spectrum. T…
Element abundance ratios of magnesium to neon (Mg/Ne) and neon to oxygen (Ne/O) in the transition region of the quiet Sun have been derived by re-assessing previously published data from the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory in the light of new atomic data. The quiet Sun Mg/Ne ratio is important for assessing the effect of magnetic activity on the mechanism of the first ionization potential (FIP) effect, while the Ne/O ratio can be used to infer the solar photospheric abundance of neon, which can not be measured directly. The average Mg/Ne ratio is…

In the last decade, the photospheric solar metallicity as determined from spectroscopy experienced a remarkable downward revision. Part of this effect can be attributed to an improvement of atomic data and the inclusion of NLTE computations, but also the use of hydrodynamical model atmospheres seemed to play a role. This "decrease" with time of the metallicity of the solar photosphere increased the disagreement with the results from helioseismology. With a CO5BOLD 3D model of the solar atmosphere, the CIFIST team at the Paris Observatory re-determined the photospheric solar abundances of sever…
(Abridged) Extremely metal-poor stars contain the fossil records of the chemical composition of the early Galaxy. The NLTE profiles of the calcium lines were computed in a sample of 53 extremely metal-poor stars with a modified version of the program MULTI. With our new model atom we are able to reconcile the abundance of Ca deduced from the Ca I and Ca II lines in Procyon. -We find that [Ca/Fe] = 0.50 $\pm$ 0.09 in the early Galaxy, a value slightly higher than the previous LTE estimations. -The scatter of the ratios [X/Ca] is generally smaller than the scatter of the ratio [X/Mg] where X is …
We analyzed X-Shooter/VLT spectra of 24 ClassIII sources from three nearby star-forming regions (sigmaOrionis, LupusIII, and TWHya). We determined the effective temperature, surface gravity, rotational velocity, and radial velocity by comparing the observed spectra with synthetic BT-Settl model spectra. We investigated in detail the emission lines emerging from the stellar chromospheres and combined these data with archival X-ray data to allow for a comparison between chromospheric and coronal emissions. Both X-ray and Halpha luminosity as measured in terms of the bolometric luminosity are ind…
Accurate atomic data is an essential ingredient for the calculation of reliable non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres that are mandatory for the spectral analysis of hot stars. We aim to search for and identify for the first time spectral lines of copper (atomic number Z = 29) and indium (Z = 49) in hot white dwarf (WD) stars and to subsequently determine their photospheric abundances. Oscillator strengths of Cu IV - VII were calculated to include radiative and collisional bound-bound transitions of Cu in our NLTE model-atmosphere calculations. Oscillator strengths of In…
Stars with masses in the range 7-10Msun end their lives either as massive white dwarfs or weak type II supernovae, and there are only limited observational constraints of either channel. Here we report the detection of two white dwarfs with large photospheric oxygen abundances, implying that they are bare oxygen-neon cores and that they may have descended from the most massive progenitors that avoid core-collapse.
The German Astrophysical Virtual Observatory (GAVO) developed the registered service TheoSSA (theoretical stellar spectra access) and the supporting registered VO tool TMAW (Tuebingen Model-Atmosphere WWW interface). These allow individual spectral analyses of hot, compact stars with state-of-the-art non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) stellar-atmosphere models that presently consider opacities of the elements H, He, C, N, O, Ne, Na, and Mg, without requiring detailed knowledge about the involved background codes and procedures. Presently, TheoSSA provides easy access to about 150000 …
We present atmospheric parameters and abundances for chemical elements from carbon to barium in metal-poor stars in Segue 1 (seven stars), Coma Berenices (three stars), and Triangulum II (one star) ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). The effective temperatures rely on new photometric observations in the visible and infra-red bands, obtained with the 2.5 m telescope of the SAI MSU Caucasian observatory. Abundances of up to fourteen chemical elements were derived under the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation, and LTE abundances were obtained for up to five more elements. For…
To revisit the long-standing problem of possible inconsistency concerning the oxygen composition in the current galactic gas and in the solar atmosphere (i.e., the former being appreciably lower by ~0.3 dex) apparently contradicting the galactic chemical evolution, we carried out oxygen abundance determinations for 64 mid- through late-B stars by using the O I 6156-8 lines while taking into account the non-LTE effect, and compared them with the solar O abundance established in the same manner. The resulting mean oxygen abundance was <A(O)> = 8.71 (+/- 0.06), which means that [O/H] (star-Sun di…
Calibrating the metallicity of M dwarfs in wide physical binaries with F-, G-, and K-primaries -- II: Carbon, oxygen, and odd-Z iron-peak abundances of the primary stars
Present day solar imaging spectrometers typically yield a few hundred million spectra in one hour of observing time. This number will increase by an order of magnitude for future instruments with larger 4k x 4k sensors as planned to be used for the upcoming DKIST solar telescope. A fast quantitative analysis of such huge data volumes can be done by comparing the observations to an archive of pre-calculated synthetic spectra to infer the thermodynamic properties of the atmosphere. To analyze intensity spectra of the Ca II IR line at 854 nm in the solar atmosphere, we generated an archive with 2…
The use of hydrodynamical simulations, the selection of atomic data, and the computation of deviations from local thermodynamical equilibrium for the analysis of the solar spectra have implied a downward revision of the solar metallicity. We are in the process of using the latest simulations computed with the CO5BOLD code to reassess the solar chemical composition. We determine the solar photospheric carbon abundance by using a radiation-hydrodynamical CO5BOLD model, and compute the departures from local thermodynamical equilibrium by using the Kiel code. We measure equivalent widths of atomic…
For the spectral analysis of high-resolution and high-signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra of hot stars, state-of-the-art non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model atmospheres are mandatory. These are strongly dependent on the reliability of the atomic data that is used for their calculation. Reliable Ba V - VII oscillator strengths are used to identify Ba lines in the spectra of the DA-type white dwarf G191-B2B and the DO-type white dwarf RE0503-289 and to determine their photospheric Ba abundances. We newly calculated Ba V - VII oscillator strengths to consider their radiative and collisiona…
The sn stars present sharp Balmer lines, sharp metallic lines and broad coreless He I lines. Initially Abt & Levato proposed a shell-like nature to explain the sn stars, although this scenario was subsequently questioned. We aim to derive abundances for a sample of 9 stars, including sn and non-sn stars, to determine the possible relation between sn and CP stars. We analysed the photospheric chemical composition of sn stars and show that approximately 40% of them display chemical peculiarities (such as He-weak and HgMn stars) within a range of temperature of 10300 - 14500 K. We have studied th…
For the spectral analysis of high-resolution and high-signal-to-noise spectra of hot stars, state-of-the-art non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) model-atmospheres are mandatory. These are strongly dependent on the reliability of the atomic data that is used for their calculation. In a recent analysis of the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum of the DA-type white dwarf G191-B2B, 21 Zn IV lines were newly identified. Because of the lack of Zn IV data, transition probabilities of the isoelectronic Ge VI were adapted for a first, coarse determination of the photospheric Zn abundance. We performed ne…
Idealized protoplanetary disk and giant planet formation models have been interpreted to suggest that a giant planet's atmospheric abundances can be used to infer its formation location in its parent protoplanetary disk. It has recently been reported that the hot Jupiter WASP-77 A b has sub-solar atmospheric carbon and oxygen abundances with a solar C/O abundance ratio. Assuming solar carbon and oxygen abundances for its host star WASP-77 A, WASP-77 A b's atmospheric carbon and oxygen abundances possibly indicate that it accreted its envelope interior to its parent protoplanetary disk's H2O ic…
