Proof assistants and programming languages based on type theories usually come in two flavours: one is based on the standard natural deduction presentation of type theory and involves eliminators, while the other provides a syntax in equational style. We show here that the equational approach corresponds to the use of a focused presentation of a type theory expressed as a sequent calculus. A typed functional language is presented, based on a sequent calculus, that we relate to the syntax and internal language of Agda. In particular, we discuss the use of patterns and case splittings, as well as rules implementing inductive reasoning and dependent products and sums.
In this paper we briefly summarize the contents of Manzonetto's PhD thesis which concerns denotational semantics and equational/order theories of the pure untyped lambda-calculus. The main research achievements include: (i) a general construction of lambda-models from reflexive objects in (possibly non-well-pointed) categories; (ii) a Stone-style representation theorem for combinatory algebras; (iii) a proof that no effective lambda-model can have lambda-beta or lambda-beta-eta as its equational theory (this can be seen as a partial answer to an open problem introduced by Honsell-Ronchi Della …
We present an abstract framework for concurrent processes in which atomic steps have generic side effects, handled according to the principle of monadic encapsulation of effects. Processes in this framework are potentially infinite resumptions, modelled using final coalgebras over the monadic base. As a calculus for such processes, we introduce a concurrent extension of Moggi's monadic metalanguage of effects. We establish soundness and completeness of a natural equational axiomatisation of this calculus. Moreover, we identify a corecursion scheme that is explicitly definable over the base lan…
A longstanding open problem is whether there exists a non syntactical model of the untyped lambda-calculus whose theory is exactly the least lambda-theory (l-beta). In this paper we investigate the more general question of whether the equational/order theory of a model of the (untyped) lambda-calculus can be recursively enumerable (r.e. for brevity). We introduce a notion of effective model of lambda-calculus calculus, which covers in particular all the models individually introduced in the literature. We prove that the order theory of an effective model is never r.e.; from this it follows tha…
We introduce the PBS-calculus to represent and reason on quantum computations involving coherent control of quantum operations. Coherent control, and in particular indefinite causal order, is known to enable multiple computational and communication advantages over classically ordered models like quantum circuits. The PBS-calculus is inspired by quantum optics, in particular the polarising beam splitter (PBS for short). We formalise the syntax and the semantics of the PBS-diagrams, and we equip the language with an equational theory, which is proved to be sound and complete: two diagrams are re…
The primary goal of this paper is to present a unified way to transform the syntax of a logic system into certain initial algebraic structure so that it can be studied algebraically. The algebraic structures which one may choose for this purpose are various clones over a full subcategory of a category. We show that the syntax of equational logic, lambda calculus and first order logic can be represented as clones or right algebras of clones over the set of positive integers. The semantics is then represented by structures derived from left algebras of these clones.
Development of a contraction-free BI sequent calculus, be it in the sense of G3i or G4i, has not been successful in literature. We address the open problem by presenting such a sequent system. In fact our calculus involves no structural rules.
Public announcement logic(PAL) is an extension of epistemic logic (EL) with some reduction axioms. In this paper, we propose a cut-free labelled sequent calculus for PAL, which is an extension of that for EL with sequent rules adapted from the reduction axioms. This calculus admits cut and allows terminating proof search.
A logic calculus is presented that is a conservative extension of linear logic. The motivation beneath this work concerns lazy evaluation, true concurrency and interferences in proof search. The calculus includes two new connectives to deal with multisequent structures and has the cut-elimination property. Extensions are proposed that give first results concerning our objectives.
Bi-intuitionistic logic is the extension of intuitionistic logic with a connective dual to implication. Bi-intuitionistic logic was introduced by Rauszer as a Hilbert calculus with algebraic and Kripke semantics. But her subsequent ``cut-free'' sequent calculus for BiInt has recently been shown by Uustalu to fail cut-elimination. We present a new cut-free sequent calculus for BiInt, and prove it sound and complete with respect to its Kripke semantics. Ensuring completeness is complicated by the interaction between implication and its dual, similarly to future and past modalities in tense logic…
We study the Pi-calculus, enriched with pairing and non-blocking input, and define a notion of type assignment that uses the type constructor "arrow". We encode the circuits of the calculus X into this variant of Pi, and show that all reduction (cut-elimination) and assignable types are preserved. Since X enjoys the Curry-Howard isomorphism for Gentzen's calculus LK, this implies that all proofs in LK have a representation in Pi.
The formal system of intuitionistic epistemic logic IEL was proposed by S. Artemov and T. Protopopescu. It provides the formal foundation for the study of knowledge from an intuitionistic point of view based on Brouwer-Hayting-Kolmogorov semantics of intuitionism. We construct a cut-free sequent calculus for IEL and establish that polynomial space is sufficient for the proof search in it. So, we prove that IEL is PSPACE-complete.
We present a labelled sequent calculus for Boolean BI, a classical variant of O'Hearn and Pym's logic of Bunched Implication. The calculus is simple, sound, complete, and enjoys cut-elimination. We show that all the structural rules in our proof system, including those rules that manipulate labels, can be localised around applications of certain logical rules, thereby localising the handling of these rules in proof search. Based on this, we demonstrate a free variable calculus that deals with the structural rules lazily in a constraint system. A heuristic method to solve the constraints is pro…
We have developed a web-based pedagogical proof assistant, the Proof Tree Builder, that lets you apply rules upwards from the initial goal in sequent calculus and Hoare logic for a simple imperative language. We equipped our tool with a basic proof automation feature and Z3 integration. Students in the automated reasoning course at Princeton University used our tool and found it intuitive. The Proof Tree Builder is available online at https://proof-tree-builder.github.io.
In this paper, we take a pervasively effectful (in the style of ML) typed lambda calculus, and show how to extend it to permit capturing pure expressions with types. Our key observation is that, just as the pure simply-typed lambda calculus can be extended to support effects with a monadic type discipline, an impure typed lambda calculus can be extended to support purity with a comonadic type discipline. We establish the correctness of our type system via a simple denotational model, which we call the capability space model. Our model formalizes the intuition common to systems programmers that…
Full Intuitionistic Linear Logic (FILL) is multiplicative intuitionistic linear logic extended with par. Its proof theory has been notoriously difficult to get right, and existing sequent calculi all involve inference rules with complex annotations to guarantee soundness and cut-elimination. We give a simple and annotation-free display calculus for FILL which satisfies Belnap's generic cut-elimination theorem. To do so, our display calculus actually handles an extension of FILL, called Bi-Intuitionistic Linear Logic (BiILL), with an `exclusion' connective defined via an adjunction with par. We…
Nominal logic is a variant of first-order logic that provides support for reasoning about bound names in abstract syntax. A key feature of nominal logic is the new-quantifier, which quantifies over fresh names (names not appearing in any values considered so far). Previous attempts have been made to develop convenient rules for reasoning with the new-quantifier, but we argue that none of these attempts is completely satisfactory. In this article we develop a new sequent calculus for nominal logic in which the rules for the new- quantifier are much simpler than in previous attempts. We also pro…
We describe SeCaV, a sequent calculus verifier for first-order logic in Isabelle/HOL, and the SeCaV Unshortener, an online tool that expands succinct derivations into the full SeCaV syntax. We leverage the power of Isabelle/HOL as a proof checker for our SeCaV derivations. The interactive features of Isabelle/HOL make our system transparent. For instance, the user can simply click on a side condition to see its exact definition. Our formalized soundness and completeness proofs pertain exactly to the calculus as exposed to the user and not just to some model of our tool. Users can also write th…
A grammar logic refers to an extension to the multi-modal logic K in which the modal axioms are generated from a formal grammar. We consider a proof theory, in nested sequent calculus, of grammar logics with converse, i.e., every modal operator [a] comes with a converse. Extending previous works on nested sequent systems for tense logics, we show all grammar logics (with or without converse) can be formalised in nested sequent calculi, where the axioms are internalised in the calculi as structural rules. Syntactic cut-elimination for these calculi is proved using a procedure similar to that fo…
In a previously published ENTCS paper (Santos et al. (2016)), we introduced a sequent calculus called $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ for Minimal Implicational Propositional Logic ($\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$). This calculus provides a proof search procedure for $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ that works in a bottom-up approach. We proved there that $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ is sound and complete. We also suggested a strategy to guarantee termination of the proof search procedure. In this current paper, we refined this strategy and presented a new strategy for $\mathbf{LMT^{\rightarrow}}$ termin…
Bi-intuitionistic logic is the conservative extension of intuitionistic logic with a connective dual to implication. It is sometimes presented as a symmetric constructive subsystem of classical logic. In this paper, we compare three sequent calculi for bi-intuitionistic propositional logic: (1) a basic standard-style sequent calculus that restricts the premises of implication-right and exclusion-left inferences to be single-conclusion resp. single-assumption and is incomplete without the cut rule, (2) the calculus with nested sequents by Gore et al., where a complete class of cuts is encapsula…
Nakano's "later" modality, inspired by Gödel-Löb provability logic, has been applied in type systems and program logics to capture guarded recursion. Birkedal et al modelled this modality via the internal logic of the topos of trees. We show that the semantics of the propositional fragment of this logic can be given by linear converse-well-founded intuitionistic Kripke frames, so this logic is a marriage of the intuitionistic modal logic KM and the intermediate logic LC. We therefore call this logic $\mathrm{KM}_{\mathrm{lin}}$. We give a sound and cut-free complete sequent calculus for $\math…
We give a linear nested sequent calculus for the basic normal tense logic Kt. We show that the calculus enables backwards proof-search, counter-model construction and syntactic cut-elimination. Linear nested sequents thus provide the minimal amount of nesting necessary to provide an adequate proof-theory for modal logics containing converse. As a bonus, this yields a cut-free calculus for symmetric modal logic KB.
The aim of our paper is twofold: firstly we present a sequent calculus for an intuitionistic non-Fregean logic ISCI, which is based on the calculus presented in the paper by Chlebowski and Leszczynska-Jasion, 'An Investigation into Intuitionistic Logic with Identity' (Bulletin of the Section of Logic 48(4), p. 259-283, 2019) and, secondly, we discuss the problem of decidability of ISCI via the obtained system. The original calculus from the mentioned paper did not provide the decidability result for ISCI. There are two problems to be solved in order to obtain this result: the so called loops c…
The intuitionistic fragment of the call-by-name version of Curien and Herbelin's λ\_mu\_{mu}-calculus is isolated and proved strongly normalising by means of an embedding into the simply-typed lambda-calculus. Our embedding is a continuation-and-garbage-passing style translation, the inspiring idea coming from Ikeda and Nakazawa's translation of Parigot's λ\_mu-calculus. The embedding strictly simulates reductions while usual continuation-passing-style transformations erase permutative reduction steps. For our intuitionistic sequent calculus, we even only need "units of garbage" to be passed. …
The sequent calculus sL for the Lambek calculus L (lambek 58) has no structural rules. Interestingly, sL is equivalent to a multimodal calculus mL, which consists of the nonassociative Lambek calculus with the structural rule of associativity. This paper proves that the sequent calculus or hypersequent calculus hD of the discontinuous Lambek calculus (Morrill and Valentín), which like sL has no structural rules, is also equivalent to an omega-sorted multimodal calculus mD. More concretely, we present a faithful embedding translation between mD and hD in such a way that it can be said that hD a…
We study the equational theory of Parigot's second-order λμ-calculus in connection with a call-by-name continuation-passing style (CPS) translation into a fragment of the second-order λ-calculus. It is observed that the relational parametricity on the target calculus induces a natural notion of equivalence on the λμ-terms. On the other hand, the unconstrained relational parametricity on the λμ-calculus turns out to be inconsistent with this CPS semantics. Following these facts, we propose to formulate the relational parametricity on the λμ-calculu…
In a recent paper, Herbelin developed a calculus dPA$^ω$ in which constructive proofs for the axioms of countable and dependent choices could be derived via the encoding of a proof of countable universal quantification as a stream of it components. However, the property of normalization (and therefore the one of soundness) was only conjectured. The difficulty for the proof of normalization is due to the simultaneous presence of dependent dependent types (for the constructive part of the choice), of control operators (for classical logic), of coinductive objects (to encode functions of type $N\…
This paper positively solves an open problem if it is possible to provide a Hilbert system to Epistemic Logic of Friendship (EFL) by Seligman, Girard and Liu. To find a Hilbert system, we first introduce a sound, complete and cut-free tree (or nested) sequent calculus for EFL, which is an integrated combination of Seligman's sequent calculus for basic hybrid logic and a tree sequent calculus for modal logic. Then we translate a tree sequent into an ordinary formula to specify a Hilbert system of EFL and finally show that our Hilbert system is sound and complete for the intended two-dimensional…
Basic proof-search tactics in logic and type theory can be seen as the root-first applications of rules in an appropriate sequent calculus, preferably without the redundancies generated by permutation of rules. This paper addresses the issues of defining such sequent calculi for Pure Type Systems (PTS, which were originally presented in natural deduction style) and then organizing their rules for effective proof-search. We introduce the idea of Pure Type Sequent Calculus with meta-variables (PTSCalpha), by enriching the syntax of a permutation-free sequent calculus for propositional logic due …
Lambek's non-associative syntactic calculus (NL) excels in its resource consciousness: the usual structural rules for weakening, contraction, exchange and even associativity are all dropped. Recently, there have been proposals for conservative extensions dispensing with NL's intuitionistic bias towards sequents with single conclusions: De Groote and Lamarche's classical non-associative Lambek calculus (CNL) and the Lambek-Grishin calculus (LG) of Moortgat and associates. We demonstrate Andreoli's focalization property for said proposals: a normalization result for Cut-free sequent derivations …
We present the Sequent Calculus Trainer, a tool that supports students in learning how to correctly construct proofs in the sequent calculus for first-order logic with equality. It is a proof assistant fostering the understanding of all the syntactic principles that need to be obeyed in constructing correct proofs. It does not provide any help in finding good proof strategies. Instead it aims at understanding the sequent calculus on a lower syntactic level that needs to be mastered before one can consider proof strategies. Its main feature is a proper feedback system embedded in a graphical us…
Proof search has been used to specify a wide range of computation systems. In order to build a framework for reasoning about such specifications, we make use of a sequent calculus involving induction and co-induction. These proof principles are based on a proof theoretic (rather than set-theoretic) notion of definition. Definitions are akin to (stratified) logic programs, where the left and right rules for defined atoms allow one to view theories as "closed" or defining fixed points. The use of definitions makes it possible to reason intensionally about syntax, in particular enforcing free equ…
We show how Leibnitz.s indiscernibility principle and Gentzen's original work lead to extensions of the sequent calculus to first order logic with equality and investigate the cut elimination property. Furthermore we discuss and improve the nonlengthening property of Lifshitz and Orevkov.
This paper introduces a logical system, called BV, which extends multiplicative linear logic by a non-commutative self-dual logical operator. This extension is particularly challenging for the sequent calculus, and so far it is not achieved therein. It becomes very natural in a new formalism, called the calculus of structures, which is the main contribution of this work. Structures are formulae submitted to certain equational laws typical of sequents. The calculus of structures is obtained by generalising the sequent calculus in such a way that a new top-down symmetry of derivations is observe…
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a bi-intuitionistic sequent calculus and to give proofs of admissibility for its structural rules. The calculus I will present, called SC2Int, is a sequent calculus for the bi-intuitionistic logic 2Int. Calculi for this logic represent a kind of bilateralist reasoning, since they do not only internalize processes of verification or provability but also the dual processes in terms of falsification or what is called dual provability. A normal form theorem for a natural deduction calculus of 2Int has already been stated, in this paper I want to prove a cu…
Separation logics are a family of extensions of Hoare logic for reasoning about programs that mutate memory. These logics are "abstract" because they are independent of any particular concrete memory model. Their assertion languages, called propositional abstract separation logics, extend the logic of (Boolean) Bunched Implications (BBI) in various ways. We develop a modular proof theory for various propositional abstract separation logics using cut-free labelled sequent calculi. We first extend the cut-fee labelled sequent calculus for BBI of Hou et al to handle Calcagno et al's original logi…
In this paper, we define a multi-type calculus for inquisitive logic, which is sound, complete and enjoys Belnap-style cut-elimination and subformula property. Inquisitive logic is the logic of inquisitive semantics, a semantic framework developed by Groenendijk, Roelofsen and Ciardelli which captures both assertions and questions in natural language. Inquisitive logic is sound and complete w.r.t. the so-called state semantics (also known as team semantics). The Hilbert-style presentation of inquisitive logic is not closed under uniform substitution; indeed, some occurrences of formulas are re…
In this paper we present a cut-free sequent calculus, called SeqS, for some standard conditional logics, namely CK, CK+ID, CK+MP and CK+MP+ID. The calculus uses labels and transition formulas and can be used to prove decidability and space complexity bounds for the respective logics. We also present CondLean, a theorem prover for these logics implementing SeqS calculi written in SICStus Prolog.
