The article reviews the current state of the field, and also presents new analyses especially with respect to the impact of seismic scattering on gravity perturbations, active gravity noise cancellation, and time-domain models of gravity perturbations from atmospheric and seismic point sources. Our understanding of terrestrial gravity fluctuations will have great impact on the future development of GW detectors and high-precision gravimetry in general, and many open questions need to be answered still as emphasized in this article.
Using a semi-empirical approach we show that modified gravity affects the internal properties of terrestrial planets, such as their physical characteristics of a core, mantle, and core-mantle boundary. We also apply these findings for modeling a two-layers exoplanet in Palatini $f(R)$ gravity.
Light can be used as a probe to explore the structure of space-time: this is usual in astrophysical and cosmological tests, however it has been recently suggested that this can be done also in terrestrial laboratories. Namely, the GINGER project aims at measuring post-Newtonian effects, such as the gravito-magnetic ones, in an Earth based laboratory, by means of a ring lasers array. Here, we first review the theoretical foundations of the Sagnac Effect, on which ring lasers are based, and then we study the Sagnac Effect in a terrestrial laboratory, emphasizing the origin of the gravitational c…
Modified gravity theories include $f(\mathbf{R})-$gravity models that are usually constrained by the cosmological evolutionary scenario. However, it has been recently shown that they can also be constrained by the signatures of accretion disk around constant Ricci curvature Kerr-$f(\mathbf{R}_{0})$ stellar sized black holes. Our aim here is to use another experimental fact, viz., the terrestrial Sagnac delay to constrain the parameters of specific $f(\mathbf{R})-$gravity prescriptions. We shall assume that a Kerr-$f(\mathbf{R}_{0})$ solution asymptotically describes Earth's weak gravity near i…
Mass-radius relations of homogeneous cold spheres are obtained for six solid materials commonly found in terrestrial planets. An additional degeneracy in the (exo-)planets' profiles is discussed together with their properties concluded from our findings in the framework of Palatini $f(\mathcal R)$ gravity. Moreover, a new test of gravity has been proposed: The results presented here will allow to test and to constrain models of gravity by the use of seismic data acquired from earthquakes and marsquakes.

The effects of Horava-Lifshitz corrections to the gravito-magnetic field are analyzed. Solutions in the weak field, slow motion limit, referring to the motion of a satellite around the Earth are considered. The post-newtonian paradigm is used to evaluate constraints on the Horava-Lifshitz parameter space from current satellite and terrestrial experiments data. In particular, we focus on GRAVITY PROBE B, LAGEOS and the more recent LARES mission, as well as a forthcoming terrestrial project, GINGER.
In this paper we very preliminarily investigate the possibility of measuring the post-Newtonian general relativistic gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic components of the acceleration of gravity on the Earth, in continuous regime, with two absolute measurements at the equator and the south pole with superconducting gravimeters. The magnitudes of such relativistic effects are 10^-10 m s^-2 and 10^-11 m s^-2, respectively. Unfortunately, the present-day uncertainties in the Earth's geodetic parameters which enter the classical Newtonian terms induce systematic errors 1-2 orders of magnitude larg…
Shapiro time delay is one of the fundamental tests of general relativity and post-Newtonian theories of gravity. Consequently, its measurements can be used to probe the parameter $γ$ which is related to spacetime curvature produced by a unit mass in the post-Newtonian formalism of gravity. To date all measurements of time delay have been conducted on astronomical scales. It was asserted in 2010 that gravitational wave detectors on Earth could be used to measure Shapiro delay on a terrestrial scale via massive rotating systems. Building on that work, we consider how measurements of Shapiro dela…
The quantum fluctuation of the stress tensor of a quantum field are discussed, as are the resulting spacetime metric fluctuations. Passive quantum gravity is an approximation in which gravity is not directly quantized, but fluctuations of the spacetime geometry are driven by stress tensor fluctuations. We discuss a decomposition of the stress tensor correlation function into three parts, and consider the physical implications of each part. The operational significance of metric fluctuations and the possible limits of validity of semiclassical gravity are discussed.
In this paper we study the evolution of density perturbations in the framework of Phase Coupling Gravity theory at the very early universe. We show that these perturbation display an exponential-like behaviour.
In this paper we study gauge-invariant metric fluctuations from a Noncompact Kaluza-Klein (NKK) theory of gravity in a de Sitter expansion. We recover the well known result $δρ/ρ\simeq 2Φ$, obtained from the standard 4D semiclassical approach to inflation. The spectrum for these fluctuations should be dependent of the fifth (spatial-like) coordinate.
The Einstein-Langevin equation is a perturbative correction to the semiclassical Einstein equation which takes into account the lowest order quantum fluctuations of the matter stress-energy tensor. It predicts classical stochastic fluctuations in the metric field which may describe some of the remnant gravitational fluctuations after the process of environment induced decoherence driving the quantum to classical transition of gravity.
In this work, we shall analyze the effects of quantum fluctuations on the properties of a BTZ black hole, in a massive theory of gravity. We will analyze this for a charged BTZ black hole in asymptotically AdS and dS space-times. The quantum fluctuations would produce thermal fluctuations in the thermodynamics of this BTZ black hole. As these fluctuations would become relevant at a sufficiently small scale, we shall discuss the effects of such thermal fluctuations on the entropy of a small charged BTZ black. We shall also analyze the effects of these fluctuations on the stability of such a bla…
We show how the quantum potential arises in various ways and trace its connection to quantum fluctuations and Fisher information along with its realization in terms of Weyl curvature. It is a quantization factor for certain classical systems as well as an expression for quantum matter in gravity theories of Weyl-Dirac type. We extract theories and examples from the literature, providing connections and interpretations, and make a few new observations.
Stochastic semiclassical gravity is a theory for the interaction of gravity with quantum matter fields which goes beyond the semiclassical limit. The theory predicts stochastic fluctuations of the classical gravitational field induced by the quantum fluctuations of the stress energy tensor of the matter fields. Here we use an axiomatic approach to introduce the Einstein-Langevin equations as the consistent set of dynamical equations for a first order perturbative correction to semiclassical gravity and review their main features. We then describe the application of the theory in a simple chaot…
We study fluctuations and correlations between spacial regions, generated by the primordial quantum gravitational phase of the universe. We do so by a numerical evaluation of Lorentzian amplitudes in Loop Quantum Gravity, in a non-semiclassical regime. We find that the expectation value of the quantum state of the geometry emerging from the early quantum phase of the universe is a homogeneous space but fluctuations are very large and correlations are strong, although not maximal. In particular, this suggests that early quantum gravitational effects could be sufficient to solve the cosmological…
The back-reaction of a classical gravitational field interacting with quantum matter fields is described by the semiclassical Einstein equation, which has the expectation value of the quantum matter fields stress tensor as a source. The semiclassical theory may be obtained from the quantum field theory of gravity interacting with N matter fields in the large N limit. This theory breaks down when the fields quantum fluctuations are important. Stochastic gravity goes beyond the semiclassical limit and allows for a systematic and self-consistent description of the metric fluctuations induced by t…
A correspondence between fluctuations of conformally invariant quantum fields and that of classical fields finally reducing to perfect fluid matter content is shown to exist. Previously a similar correspondence between the stress tensors was known and well established in the 70's. Using recent results obtained in semiclassical stochastic gravity regarding exact definition and significance given to quantum fluctuations of the stress tensor, we obtain this correspondence, which is fundamental to statistical analysis of systems in curved spacetime. This is of immense importance, in that the fluct…
We examine the thermodynamics of a regular charged black hole (RCB) added with corrections due to massive gravity and thermal fluctuations at quantum level. We then derive the expressions for all the relevant thermodynamic quantities such as entropy, Hawkings temperature, internal energy, Gibbs free energy, corrected to first order. We also briefly discuss the stability of such a system with the help of quantities like specific heat and thermodynamic pressure, along with this we present their comparative study with the corresponding original values.
We discuss the stability of semiclassical gravity solutions with respect to small quantum corrections by considering the quantum fluctuations of the metric perturbations around the semiclassical solution. We call the attention to the role played by the symmetrized two-point quantum correlation function for the metric perturbations, which can be naturally decomposed into two separate contributions: intrinsic and induced fluctuations. We show that traditional criteria on the stability of semiclassical gravity are incomplete because these criteria based on the linearized semiclassical Einstein eq…
We propose a criterion for the validity of semiclassical gravity (SCG) which is based on the stability of the solutions of SCG with respect to quantum metric fluctuations. We pay special attention to the two-point quantum correlation functions for the metric perturbations, which contain both intrinsic and induced fluctuations. These fluctuations can be described by the Einstein-Langevin equation obtained in the framework of stochastic gravity. Specifically, the Einstein-Langevin equation yields stochastic correlation functions for the metric perturbations which agree, to leading order in the l…
We investigate gauge invariant scalar fluctuations of the metric during inflation in a non-perturbative formalism in the framework of a recently introduced scalar-tensor theory of gravity formulated on a Weyl-Integrable geometry. We found that the Weyl scalar field can play the role of the inflaton field in this theory. As an application we study the case of a power law inflation. In this case the quasi-scale invariance of the spectrum for scalar fluctuations of the metric is achieved for determined values of the $ω$ parameter of the scalar-tensor theory. In our formalism the physical inflaton…
The quantum gravity path integral's measure can be written as the product of classical backgrounds and quantum fluctuations about each background. After proving that fluctuations about the background do not diffuse in Hilbert space and obey the laws of many-body statistics, their probability distributions, entropy, and expected background are determined. This background obeys expectation-valued Einstein equations and features an entropy-based positive cosmological constant. From the fluctuation probability distributions, a finite temperature, R-squared, quantum gravity path integral is constru…
The Newman-Janis technique and the semi-classical Hamilton-Jacobi approach are two distinct phenomena that we apply in this paper to examine the Hawking temperature $(T_{H})$ for $4$-dimensional gauge super gravity like black hole with rotation parameters. First, using the Newman-Janis algorithmic approach, we compute the gauge super gravity like black holes solution. We use surface gravity to derive the $T_H$ for a gauge super gravity like black hole. In order to do this, we use the Lagrangian field equation in the background of generalized uncertainty principle, semi-classical Hamilton-Jacob…
We give a short update of our research program on nonequilibrium statistical field theory applied to quantum processes in the early universe and black holes, as well as the development of stochastic gravity theory as an extension of semiclassical gravity and an intermediary in the 'bottom-up' approach to quantum gravity.
The positive energy theorem precludes the possibility of Minkowski flat space decaying by any mechanism. In certain circumstances, however, large quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field could arise---not only at the Planck scale, but also at larger scales. This is because there exists a set of localised weak field configurations which satisfy the condition int d4x sqrt{g}R = 0 and thus give a null contribution to the Einstein action. Such configurations can be constructed by solving Einstein field equations with unphysical dipolar sources. We discuss this mechanism and its modification…
From calculations of the variance of fluctuations and of the mean of the energy density of a massless scalar field in the Minkowski vacuum as a function of an intrinsic scale defined by the world function between two nearby points (as used in point separation regularization) we show that, contrary to prior claims, the ratio of variance to mean-squared being of the order unity does not imply a failure of semiclassical gravity. It is more a consequence of the quantum nature of the state of matter field than any inadequacy of the theory of spacetime with quantum matter as source.
We investigate the properties of the condensates of cold atoms at zero temperature in the tunable binary Bose-Einstein condensate system with a Rabi transition between atomic hyperfine states. We use this system to examine the effect of quantum fluctuations in a tunable quantum gas on phonon propagation. We show that the system can be represented by a coupled two-field model of a gapless phonon and a gapped mode, which are analogous to the Goldstone and Higgs particles in particle physics. We then further trace out the gapped modes to give an effective purely phononic theory using closed-time-…
We give a progress report of our research on spacetime fluctuations induced by quantum fields in an evaporating black hole and a black hole in quasi-equilibrium with its Hawking radiation. We note the main issues involved in these two classes of problems and outline the key steps for a systematic quantitative investigation. This report contains unpublished new ideas for further studies.
Quantum fluctuation consequences have significant role in high-energy physics. These fluctuation often regarded as a correction of the infrared (IR) limit. Such correction contribute to the high-energy limit of thermodynamical quantities and the stability conditions of black holes. In this work, we analyze the thermal stability of black holes in the presence of thermal fluctuations. We consider AdS black hole in Born-Infeld massive gravity with non-abelian hair and the charged AdS black hole with a global monopole. We develop many thermodynamical quantities such as entropy, temperature, pressu…
This paper presents a new, non-Gaussian formulation of stochastic gravity by incorporating the higher moments of the fluctuations of the quantum stress energy tensor for a free quantum scalar field in a consistent way. A scheme is developed for obtaining realizations of these fluctuations in terms of the Wightman function, and the behavior of the fluctuations is investigated. The resulting probability distribution for fluctuations of the energy density in Minkowski spacetime is found to be similar to a shifted Gamma distribution. This distribution features a minimum energy density cutoff at a …
We discuss the limits of validity of the semiclassical theory of gravity in which a classical metric is coupled to the expectation value of the stress tensor. It is argued that this theory is a good approximation only when the fluctuations in the stress tensor are small. We calculate a dimensionless measure of these fluctuations for a scalar field on a flat background in particular cases, including squeezed states and the Casimir vacuum state. It is found that the fluctuations are small for states which are close to a coherent state, which describes classical behavior, but tend to be large oth…
For a conformally-coupled scalar field we obtain the conformally-related Einstein-Langevin equations, using appropriate transformations for all the quantities in the equations between two conformally-related spacetimes. In particular, we analyze the transformations of the influence action, the stress energy tensor, the noise kernel and the dissipation kernel. In due course the fluctuation-dissipation relation is also discussed. The analysis in this paper thereby facilitates a general solution to the Einstein-Langevin equation once the solution of the equation in a simpler, conformally-related …
We describe the fully gauge invariant cosmological perturbation equations in braneworld teleparallel gravity. In this theory, perturbations are the result of small fluctuations in the pentad field. We derive the gauge invariant 'potentials' for both geometric and matter variables. Unlike the metric fluctuations in general relativity, pentad perturbations can only contain scalar and vector modes. As a result, in teleparallel gravity, tensor modes including gravitational waves, come from the contortion tensor.
We have considered the perturbation equations governing the growth of fluctuations in generalized scalar tensor theory during inflation. we have found that the scalar metric perturbations at very early times are negligible compared with the scalar field perturbation, just like general relativity. At sufficiently early times, when $q/a\gg H$, we have obtained the metric and scalar field perturbation in the form of WKB solutions up to an undetermined coefficient. Then we have quantized the scalar fluctuations and expanded the metric and the scalar field perturbations with the help of annihilatio…
We propose a thought experiment to detect low-energy Quantum Gravity phenomena using Quantum Optical Information Technologies. Gravitational field perturbations, such as gravitational waves and quantum gravity fluctuations, decohere the entangled photon pairs, revealing the presence of gravitational field fluctuations including those more speculative sources such as compact extra dimensions and the sub-millimetric hypothetical low-energy quantum gravity phenomena and then set a limit for the decoherence of photon bunches and entangled pairs in space detectable with the current astronomical spa…
This paper corrects an earlier work suggesting that the quantum expectation value of the proper length is bounded from below by the Planck length. The original calculation examined fluctuations of the conformal factor of Einstein-Hilbert gravity. However, in Einstein-Hilbert gravity, the conformal factor is not a dynamical field subject to fluctuations. This paper performs the same calculation using the trace anomaly-induced effective action for the conformal factor and finds that, while conformal fluctuations modify the short-distance behavior of the interval, the interval still approaches ze…
We study a novel set of gravitational field configurations, called "dipolar zero modes", which give an exactly null contribution to the Einstein action and are thus candidates to become large fluctuations in the quantized theory. They are generated by static unphysical sources satisfying (up to terms of order G^2) the simple condition Int d^3x T_00(x) = 0. We give two explicit examples of virtual sources: (i) a "mass dipole" consisting of two separated mass distributions with different signs; (ii) two concentric "+/- shells". The field fluctuations can be large even at macroscopic scale. There…
In a class of generalized gravity theories with general couplings between the scalar field and the scalar curvature in the Lagrangian, we can describe the quantum generation and the classical evolution of both the scalar and tensor structures in a simple and unified manner. An accelerated expansion phase based on the generalized gravity in the early universe drives microscopic quantum fluctuations inside a causal domain to expand into macroscopic ripples in the spacetime metric on scales larger than the local horizon. Following their generation from quantum fluctuations, the ripples in the met…
We develop a nonperturbative quantum field formalism to describe scalar gauge-invariant metric flucturations in the early universe from a 5D apparent (Ricci flat) vacuum.
Recently, we presented a unified way of analysing classical cosmological perturbation in generalized gravity theories. In this paper, we derive the perturbation spectrums generated from quantum fluctuations again in unified forms. We consider a situation where an accelerated expansion phase of the early universe is realized in a particular generic phase of the generalized gravity. We take the perturbative semiclassical approximation which treats the perturbed parts of the metric and matter fields as quantum mechanical operators. Our generic results include the conventional power-law and expone…
In this paper, we study the idea about gravity as entropic force proposed by Verlinde. By applying the identification between partition functions of gravity theory and the dual field theory, we find the gravitational force can be calculated from the changing of entropy induced from its dual field theory side. Unlike Verlinde's calculation, our method does not depend on other assumptions such as equipartition of energy, so it is a safe check on the entropic force idea. Also we show how entropic force can be derived by similar method from gravity side along, which will provide a clue to a better…
Due to quantum fluctuations, a black hole of mass $M$ represents an average over an ensemble of black hole geometries with angular momentum. This observation is apparently at odds with the fact that the curvature singularity inside a rotating black hole is timelike, while the one inside a non-rotating black hole is spacelike. Is the average of timelike singularities really spacelike? We use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula to introduce a microcanonical ensemble for spin fluctuations and show that the onset of quantum gravity is always spacelike. We discuss the impact of this result on si…

We propose a simple model of spacetime vacuum fluctuations motivated by AdS/CFT, where the vacuum is described by a thermal density matrix, $ρ= \frac{e^{-K}}{\mbox{Tr}(e^{-K})}$ with $K$ the modular Hamiltonian. In AdS/CFT, both the expectation value of $K$ and its fluctuations $\langle ΔK^2 \rangle$ have been calculated; both obey an area law identical to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law of black hole mechanics: $\langle K \rangle = \langle ΔK^2 \rangle = \frac{A}{4 G_N}$, where $A$ is the area of an (extremal) entangling surface. It has also been shown that $ΔK$ gravitates in AdS, and hence g…

A correspondence between fluctuations of non-minimally coupled scalar fields and that of an effective fluid with heat flux and anisotropic stresses, is shown. Though the correspondence between respective stress tensors of scalar fields and fluids is known and widely used in literature, the fluctuations in the two cases still await a formal correspondence and are open to investigation in all details. Using results obtained in the newly established theory of semiclassical stochastic gravity which focuses on the fluctuations of the quantum stress tensor, we show new relations in this regard. This…
We derive the weak field limit of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory and place novel bounds on the parameter space using terrestrial and space-based experiments. In order to analyze the theory in the context of a wide range of experiments, we compute the deviations from Einstein gravity around source masses with planar, cylindrical, and spherical symmetry. We find a correction to the Newtonian potential around spherical and cylindrical sources that can be larger than PPN corrections sufficiently close to the source. We use this to improve on laboratory constraints on the scalar-Gauss-Bonnet coupling p…
We study cosmological density fluctuations within a covariant and gauge-invariant fluid-flow approach for a perfect fluid in the Einstein-Cartan gravity and derive the corresponding Raychaudhuri type of inhomogeneous coupled differential evolution equations of the second order. It appears that the quantum fluctuations of spin trigger primordial density inhomogeneities at the scale of weak interactions. These inhomogeneities are then evolved precisely to the value measured be COBE mission at the scale of decoupling.
