A conventional method to determine beam parameters is using the profile measurements and converting them into the values of twiss parameters and beam emittance at a specified position. The beam information can be used to improve transverse beam matching between two different beam lines or accelerating structures. This work is related with the measurement error effects of the beam parameters and the optimal number of profile monitors in a section between MEBT (medium energy beam transport) and QWR (quarter wave resonator) of RAON linear accelerator.
The use of Smith-Purcell radiation to measure electrons longitudinal profiles has been demonstrated at several facilities in the picosecond and sub-picosecond range. There is a strong interest for the development of non intercepting longitudinal profile diagnostics for high current proton beams. We present here results of simulations on the expected yield of longitudinal profile monitors using Smith-Purcell radiation for such proton beams.
We introduce and give examples of applications of an optimality criterion which can be used for the design and comparison of multiple beam profile emittance and Twiss parameters measurement sections and which is independent from the position of the reconstruction point.
High-brightness electron beams with low energy spread at existing and future x-ray free-electron lasers are affected by various collective beam self-interactions and microbunching instabilities. The corresponding coherent optical radiation effects, e.g., coherent optical transition radiation, render electron beam profile imaging impossible and become a serious issue for all kinds of electron beam diagnostics using imaging screens. Furthermore, coherent optical radiation effects can also be related to intrinsically ultrashort electron bunches or the existence of ultrashort spikes inside the ele…
Beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerators typically use the external injection scheme to ensure controllable beam quality at injection. However, the externally injected witness bunch may exhibit a non-Gaussian transverse density distribution. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that the common beam quality factors, such as the normalized RMS emittance and beam radius, do not strongly depend on the initial transverse shapes of the witness beam. Nonetheless, a beam with a highly-peaked transverse spatial profile can achieve a higher fraction of the total beam charge in the core. The same…
The use of coherent transition radiation autocorrelation methods to determine bunch length and profile information is examined with the compressed electron beam at the BNL ATF. A bi-gaussian fit is applied to coherent transition radiation auto-correlation data to extract the longitudinal current distribution. The effects of large transverse beam sizes are studied in theory and compared to experimental results. A suitable form of the correction factor is derived for beams with large transverse-longitudinal aspect ratios.
In this paper, a new type magnet is proposed and processed to uniform the transverse beam profile. Compeared to the octupole, the new type magnet can prove a similar octupole magnet field in the middle, but the rise rate declines quickly in the edge. So that, a same uniform beam is got with less particles loss. Besides that, a mechanical structure is added to adjust the width of the middle region to satisfy different transverse dimensions, and this whould further reduce particles loss. Some numerical simulations have been done respectively with the octupole and the new type of magnet to show t…
For the injector Scheme-I test stand of the China-ADS, a beam with the maximum power of 100 kW will be produced and transported to the beam dump. At the beam dump, the beam power will be converted to thermal load and brought away by the cooling water. Two measures are taken to deal with the huge power density at the target. One is to enlarge the contact area between the beam and the target, and this is to be accomplished by expanding the beam profile at the target and using two copper plates each having a 20o inclination angle relative to the beam direction. The other is to produce more homoge…
At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the interplay between a series of effects, including intrabeam scattering (IBS), synchrotron radiation, longitudinal beam manipulations, two beam effects (beam-beam, e-cloud) and machine non-linearities, can change the population of the core and tails and lead to non-Gaussian beam distributions, at different periods during the beam cycle. By employing generalised distribution functions, it can be demonstrated that the modified non-Gaussian beam profiles have an impact in the beam emittance evolution by itself and thereby to the collider luminosity. This pape…
Electron beam probe (EBP) is a new principle detector, which makes use of a low-intensity and low-energy electron beam to measure the transverse profile, bunch shape, beam neutralization and beam wake field of an intense beam with small dimensions. While can be applied to many aspects, we limit our analysis to beam distribution reconstruction. This kind of detector is almost non-interceptive for all of the beam and does not disturb the machine environment. In this paper, we present the theoretical aspects behind this technique for beam distribution measurement and some simulation results of th…
Vertical electric fields need to remain orders of magnitude smaller than the horizontal electric field in storage ring electric dipole moment experiments. Otherwise, the coupling with the magnetic dipole moment dominates the spin precession, eventually leading to a false signal. This work presents first quantitative studies regarding electrostatic quadrupole profile optimization, which helps suppressing image beam induced vertical electric fields. Besides the demonstration of the profile optimization, its suppression performance is also studied for various beam offsets and beam size configurat…
Ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are widely used in particle accelerators for fast evaluation of parameters of high energy beams. Due to the space-charge effects and several other physical reasons, as well as due to instrumental effects, the measured IPM profiles differ from the those of the beams. Empirical mathematical models are commonly used for reconstruction of the profiles. Here we present proper correction algorithm based on the space-charge dynamics of the secondaries in IPMs. We also demonstrate efficiency of the beam size reconstruction from experimentally measured profiles and di…
This paper examines the transition from isotropic to anisotropic beam profiles in a linear focusing channel. Considering a high-intensity ion beam in space-charge dominated regime and large mismatched {\it RMS} beam size initially, observe a fast anisotropy situation of the beam, characterized for a transition of the transversal section round to elliptical with a coupling of transversal emittance driven for instabilities of nonlinear space-charge forces. Space-charge interactions in high-intensity linear accelerator can lead to equipartitioning of energy between the degrees of freedom. The ani…
A compact beam-profile monitor was constructed using a linear contact image sensor attached to a plastic scintillator and tested using a 230 MeV proton beam. The results indicate that the beam distribution can be obtained in real-time, and the beam position with a precision of up to 0.03 mm. The compactness and high precision of the device hold considerable potential for it to be used as a beam-profile monitor and offline, daily quality assurance monitor in hadron therapy.
Collinear high-gradient ${\cal O} (GV/m)$ beam-driven wakefield methods for charged-particle acceleration could be critical to the realization of compact, cost-efficient, accelerators, e.g., in support of TeV-scale lepton colliders or multiple-user free-electron laser facilities. To make these options viable, the high accelerating fields need to be complemented with large transformer ratios $>2$, a parameter characterizing the efficiency of the energy transfer between a wakefield-exciting "drive" bunch to an accelerated "witness" bunch. While several potential current distributions have been d…
In present work, we report an experimental method to measure the density and distribution of a supersonic gas jet used for charged particle beam profile monitoring. The density of the gas jet used in this monitor was in the range of $10^{14}$ - $10^{17}$ molecules/$m^3$.
The performance and safe operation of a particle accelerator is closely connected to the transverse emittance of the beams it produces. For this reason many techniques have been developed over the years for monitoring the transverse distribution of particles along accelerator chains or over machine cycles. The definition of beam profiles is explained and the different techniques available for the detection of the particle distributions are explored. Examples of concrete applications of these techniques are given.
Measurements of transverse profiles using Ionization Profile Monitors (IPMs) for high brightness beams are affected by the electromagnetic field of the beam. This interaction may cause a distortion of the measured profile shape despite strong external magnetic field applied to impose limits on the transverse movement of electrons. The mechanisms leading to this distortion are discussed in detail. The distortion itself is described by means of analytic calculations for simplified beam distributions and a full simulation model for realistic distributions. Simple relation for minimum magnetic fie…
Ion extraction from DECRIS-PM source is simulated by using initial distributions of ions at the extraction aperture obtained with NAM-ECRIS code. Three-dimensional calculations of plasma emissive surface are done and ions are traced in the extraction region. The ion beam profiles show strong aberrations due to shape of plasma meniscus; hollow beam features are reproduced, as well as changes in profiles for different focusing conditions.
We present a non-destructive beam profile imaging concept that utilizes machine learning tools, namely genetic algorithm with a gradient descent-like minimization. Electromagnetic fields around a charged beam carry information about its transverse profile. The electrodes of a stripline-type beam position monitor (with eight probes in this study) can pick up that information for visualization of the beam profile. We use a genetic algorithm to transform an arbitrary Gaussian beam in such a way that it eventually reconstructs the transverse position and the shape of the original beam. The algorit…
Present-day and next-generation accelerators, particularly for applications in driving wakefield-based schemes, require longitudinal beam shaping and attendant longitudinal characterization for experimental optimization. Here we present a diagnostic method which reconstructs the longitudinal beam profile at the location of a wakefield-generating source. The methods presented derive the longitudinal profile of a charged particle beam solely from measurement of the time-resolved centroid energy change due to wakefield effects. The reconstruction technique is based on a deconvolution algorithm th…
The MTA beam line has been specifically designed to facilitate measurements of the Fermilab Linac beam emittance and properties utilizing a long, 10m, element-free straight. Linac beam is extracted downstream of the 400-MeV electrostatic chopper located in the Booster injection line. This chopper cannot be utilized for MTA beam, and therefore the entire Linac beam pulse is directed into the MTA beamline. Pulse length manipulation is provided by the 750-keV electrostatic chopper at the upstream end of the Linac and, using this device, beam can be delivered from 8 μsec up to the full 50 μsec Lin…
Proton beam therapy has been developed to irradiate the tumor with higher precision and dose conformity compared to conventional X-ray irradiation. The dose conformity of this treatment modality may be further improved if narrower proton beams are used. Still, this is limited by multiple Coulomb scattering of protons through tissue. The primary aim of this work was to develop techniques to produce narrow proton beams and investigate the resulting dose profiles. We introduced and assessed three different proton beam shaping techniques: 1) metal collimators (100/150~MeV), 2) focusing of conventi…
Longitudinal charge profile measurements or bunch shape measurements is a challenge for temporally short non-relativistic bunches. The field profile has a larger longitudinal extent compared to the charge profile for such beams. This affects the ability of field sensing devices such as phase pick-ups or wall current monitors to measure charge distribution. Here we evaluate the feasibility for usage of coherent transition and diffraction radiation from non-relativistic beams for bunch shape measurements.
Synchrotron radiation has been used for many years as a beam diagnostic at electron accelerators. It is not normally associated with proton accelerators as the intensity of the radiation is too weak to make detection practical. However, if one utilizes the radiation originating near the edge of a bending magnet, or from a short magnet, the rapidly changing magnetic field serves to enhance the wavelengths shorter than the cutoff wavelength, which for more recent high energy proton accelerators such as Fermilab's Tevatron, tends to be visible light. This paper discusses the implementation at the…
An instrument has been developed for precision controlled exposures of electronic devices and material samples in particle beams. The instrument provides simultaneously a real time record of the profile of the beam and the fluence received. The system is capable of treating devices with dimensional scales ranging from millimeters to extended objects of cross sections measured in tens of square centimeters. The instrument has been demonstrated to operate effectively in integrated fluences ranging up to a few times $10^{16}$ 1-MeV-neutron-equivalent/cm$^{2}$ (n$_{\textrm{eq}}$). The positioner p…
Emittance exchange beamlines employ transverse masks to create drive and witness beams of variable longitudinal profile and bunch spacing. Recently, this approach has been used to create advanced driver profiles and demonstrate record-breaking plasma wakefield transformer ratios [Roussel, R., et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 044802 (2020)], a crucial advancement for efficient witness acceleration. However, since the transverse masks are individually laser cut and installed into the UHV beamline, refinement of the beam profiles is not possible without replacing masks. Instead, this work proposes t…
The usage of optical transition radiation for profile monitoring of relativistic electron beams is well known. This report presents the case for beam diagnostic application of optical transition radiation for non-relativistic ion beams. The angular distribution of the transition radiation emitted from few target materials for ion beam irradiation is shown. In addition to expected linearly polarized transition radiation in the plane of observation, a large amount (roughly factor 20) of unpolarized radiation is observed towards grazing angles. The unpolarized radiation has the characteristics of…
Seeded self-modulation in a plasma can transform a long proton beam into a train of micro-bunches that can excite a strong wakefield over long distances, but this needs the plasma to have a certain density profile with a short-scale ramp up. For the parameters of the AWAKE experiment at CERN, we numerically study which density profiles are optimal if the self-modulation is seeded by a short electron bunch. With the optimal profiles, it is possible to "freeze" the wakefield at approximately half the wavebreaking level. High-energy electron bunches (160 MeV) are less efficient seeds than low-ene…
A system for online measurement of the transverse beam emittance was developed. It is named $^{4}$PrOB$\varepsilon$aM (4-Profiler Online Beam Emittance Measurement) and was conceived to measure the emittance in a fast and efficient way using the multiple beam profiler method. The core of the system is constituted by four consecutive UniBEaM profilers, which are based on silica fibers passing across the beam. The $^{4}$PrOB$\varepsilon$aM system was deployed for characterization studies of the 18~MeV proton beam produced by the IBA Cyclone 18 MeV cyclotron at Bern University Hospital (Inselspit…
Simulations of ionization induced injection in a laser driven plasma wakefield show that high-quality electron injectors in the 50-200 MeV range can be achieved in a gas cell with a tailored density profile. Using the PIC code Warp with parameters close to existing experimental conditions, we show that the concentration of $\mathrm{N_2}$ in a hydrogen plasma with a tailored density profile is an efficient parameter to tune electron beam properties through the control of the interplay between beam loading effects and varying accelerating field in the density profile. For a given laser plasma co…
Plasma wakefields can enable very high accelerating gradients for frontier high energy particle accelerators, in excess of 10 GeV/m. To overcome limits on total acceleration achievable, specially shaped drive beams can be used in both linear and nonlinear plasma wakefield accelerators (PWFA), to increase the transformer ratio, implying that the drive beam deceleration is minimized relative to acceleration obtained in the wake. In this Letter, we report the results of a nonlinear PWFA, high transformer ratio experiment using high-charge, longitudinally asymmetric drive beams in a plasma cell. A…
