At the international linear collider, measurement of the beam profile at the interaction point is a key issue to achieve high luminosity. We report a simulation study on a new beam profile monitor, called the pair monitor, which uses the hit distribution of the electron-positron pairs generated at the interaction point. We obtained measurement accuracies of 5.1%, 10.0%, and 4.0% for the horizontal, vertical, and longitudinal beam size, respectively, for 50 bunch crossings.
We present a brief summary of the International Linear Collider as documented in the 2013 Technical Design Report. The Technical Design Report has detailed descriptions of the accelerator baseline design for a 500 GeV e+e- linear collider, the R&D program that has demonstrated its feasibility, the physics goals and expected sensitivities, and the description of the ILD and SiD detectors and their capabilities.
This note describes R&D to be carried out on the data acquisition system for a calorimeter at the future International Linear Collider. A generic calorimeter and data acquisition system is described. Within this framework modified designs and potential bottlenecks within the current system are described. Solutions leading up to a technical design report will to be carried out within CALICE-UK groups.
Detectors for experiments at International Linear Collider require utilities such as electricity and cooling water, as well as the space to locate the relevant service facilities. In this article, a possible design of caverns for utilities and services near the interaction point is presented. The design has been made intending to satisfy requirements from detectors, as well as requirements from the accelerator.
This paper presents the status of Monte Carlo simulation of one of the luminosity detectors considered for the future e+e- International Linear Collider (ILC). The detector consists of a tungsten/silicon sandwich calorimeter with pad readout. The study was performed for Bhabha scattering events assuming a zero crossing angle for the beams.
The Technical Design Report (TDR) of the ILC mainly concentrates on a baseline machine of 500 GeV centre-of-mass with detailed cost and manpower estimates consistent with this option. However, the discovery of a Higgs Boson with a mass of 125 GeV opens up the possibility of reducing cost by starting at a centre-of-mass energy of 250 GeV with the possibility of future upgrades to 500 GeV or even 1 TeV should the physics case for such an upgrade be compelling. The rest of this paper outlines the options for the design of a 250 GeV "Higgs factory".
At the Linear Collider mismatches between the two beams will result in an intense beamstrahlung. We have studied how this beamstrahlung would evolve as a function of the offset between the two beams and we suggest ways of monitoring it.
The International Linear Collider (ILC) will collide polarised electrons and positrons at beam energies of 45.6 GeV to 250 GeV and optionally up to 500 GeV. To fully exploit the physics potential of this machine, not only the luminosity and beam energy have to be known precisely, but also the polarisation of the particles has to be measured with an unprecedented precision of dP/P ~ 0.25% for both beams. The SiD Detector is one of two validated detector designs for the future International Linear Collider. SiD features a compact, cost-constrained design for precision Higgs couplings determination, and other measurements, and sensitivity to a wide range of possible new phenomena. A robust silicon vertex and tracking system, combined with a 5 Tesla central solenoidal field, provides excellent momentum resolution. At a warm linear collider the short time interval at which bunches will pass near each other in the interaction region may lead to significant alteration of the bunches positions. In this paper we quantify the intensity of this effect and show that it can be addressed by a fast intra-pulse feedback system.
High precision physics at future colliders requires unprecedented highly granular calorimeters for the application of the Particle Flow (PF) algorithm. The physical proof of concept was given in the previous campaign of beam tests of physic prototypes within the CALICE collaboration. A large, world-wide community of physicists is working to realise an exceptional physics program of energy-frontier, electron-positron collisions with the International Linear Collider (ILC). This program will begin with a central focus on high-precision and model-independent measurements of the Higgs boson couplings. This method of searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model is orthogonal to and complements the LHC physics program. The Tevatron in Collider Run II (2001-present) is operating with six times more bunches and many times higher beam intensities and luminosities than in Run I (1992-1995). Beam diagnostics were crucial for the machine start-up and the never-ending luminosity upgrade campaign. We present the overall picture of the Tevatron diagnostics development for Run II, outline machine needs for new instrumentation, present several notable examples that led to Tevatron performance improvements, and discuss the lessons for future colliders.

LumiCal will be the luminosity calorimeter for the proposed International Large Detector of the International Linear Collider (ILC). The ILC physics program requires the integrated luminosity to be measured with a relative precision on the order of 10e-3, or 10e-4 when running in GigaZ mode. Luminosity will be determined by counting Bhabha scattering events coincident in the two calorimeter modules placed symmetrically on opposite sides of the interaction point. LHC experiments have shown that efficient b tagging, reconstruction of displaced vertices and identification of disappearing tracks are necessary. One of the potential problems of a Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD)-based Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is the Ion back Flow (IBF): ions generated through the avalanche amplification process flow back to the drift volume of the TPC and disarrange an electric field inside it. Consequently non-negligible degradation of azimuthal spatial resolution is caused due to this IBF. Meanwhile, it is necessary to collect primary ionized electrons to maintain intrinsic performance of the MPGDs. Basic scaling laws are used to compare the relative capabilities of gaseous and solid-state tracking. Conclusions are drawn in the context of physics processes expected to be at the focus of studies at the International Linear Collider.
The feasibility of a CLIC-LHC based FEL-nucleus collider is investigated. It is shown that the proposed scheme satisfies all requirements of an ideal photon source for the Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence method. The physics potential of the proposed collider is illustrated for a beam of Pb nuclei.
Photon beams at photon colliders are very narrow, powerful and can not be deflected. For the beam dump at the TESLA-like collider we suggest to use a long gas (Ar) spoiler in front of the water absorber, this solves the overheating and mechanical stress problems. The neutron background at the interaction point is estimated.
The first technological SDHCAL prototype having been successfully tested, a new phase of R&D, to validate completely the SDHCAL option for the International Linear Detector (ILD) project of the International Linear Collider (ILC), has started with the conception and the realisation of a new prototype. The SLAC Linac can deliver damped bunches with ILC parameters for bunch charge and bunch length to End Station A. A 10Hz beam at 28.5 GeV energy can be delivered there, parasitic with PEP-II operation. We plan to use this facility to test prototype components of the Beam Delivery System and Interaction Region. We discuss our plans for this ILC Test Facility and preparations for carrying out experiments related to collimator wakefields and energy spectrometers. We also plan an interaction region mockup to investigate effects from backgrounds and beam-induced electromagnetic interference.

MICE is an experiment with a section of an ionization cooling channel and a muon beam. The muons will be produced by the decay of pions from a target dipping into the ISIS proton beam at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). The channel includes liquid-hydrogen absorbers providing transverse and longitudinal momentum loss and high-gradient radiofrequency (RF) cavities for longitudinal reacceleration, all packed into a solenoidal magnetic channel.
