The approach to obtain the image shape of an optical diffraction radiation (ODR) source focused by lens on a detector with taking into account the "pre-wave zone" effect has been developed. In full analogy with optical transition radiation source the characteristic size of ODR slit image doesn't depend on the Lorentz-factor and is defined by slit width, wavelength and lens aperture. If a beam is passed through a narrow slit the shape of a slit image depends on a beam size. ODR generated by extremely ultrarelativistic beam passing through a narrow slit may be used to determine the beam size from ODR slit image.

The feasibility of near-field ODR beam-size monitoring at 23 GeV at FACET

Extension of near-field optical diffraction radiation (ODR) imaging to the 23 GeV beams at the proposed FACET facility at SLAC has been evaluated. The beam-size sensitivity at the 10- to 20- μm sigma level based on a simple model will be reported. Polarization effects are also seen to be important and will be discussed. The comparisons to previous experimental results and the modeling results indicate sufficient feasibility for planning of the experiments in the coming year.

Overview of non-intercepting beam-size monitoring with optical diffraction radiation

The initial demonstrations over the last several years of the use of optical diffraction radiation (ODR) as non-intercepting electron-beam-parameter monitors are reviewed. Developments in both far-field imaging and near-field imaging are addressed for ODR generated by a metal plane with a slit aperture, a single metal plane, and two-plane interferences. Polarization effects and sensitivities to beam size, divergence, and position will be discussed as well as a proposed path towards monitoring 10-micron beam sizes at 25 GeV.

Interference of diffraction and transition radiation and its application as a beam divergence diagnostic

Optical Diffraction-Transition Radiation Interferometry and its Application to the Measurement of Beam Divergence

Characterization and control of linear coupling using turn-by-turn beam position monitor data in storage rings

We introduce a new application of measuring symplectic generators to characterize and control the linear betatron coupling in storage rings. From synchronized and consecutive BPM (Beam Position Monitor) turn-by-turn (TbT) readings, symplectic Lie generators describing the coupled linear dynamics are extracted. Internal Smith-Purcell radiation and its interplay with Cherenkov diffraction radiation in silicon -- a combined time and frequency domain numerical study

We consider radiation generated by an electron travelling parallel to a planar rectangular silicon grating: Smith-Purcell radiation to the vacuum side, internal Smith-Purcell radiation into the dielectric, and Cherenkov radiation into the dielectric. Internal Smith-Purcell radiation dominates over the other two radiation mechanisms in the range where conventional Smith-Purcell radiation is forbidden. This observation may lead to improved design of contactless particle beam monitors.

Longitudinal charge distribution measurement of non-relativistic ion beams using coherent transition radiation

Longitudinal charge profile measurements or bunch shape measurements is a challenge for temporally short non-relativistic bunches. The field profile has a larger longitudinal extent compared to the charge profile for such beams. This affects the ability of field sensing devices such as phase pick-ups or wall current monitors to measure charge distribution. Here we evaluate the feasibility for usage of coherent transition and diffraction radiation from non-relativistic beams for bunch shape measurements.
