A linear [Fe/H]-[O/H] relation is found for different stellar populations in the Galaxy (halo, thick disk, thin disk) from a data sample obtained in a recent investigation (Ram{\'ı}rez et al. 2013). These correlations support previous results inferred from poorer samples: stars display a "main sequence" expressed as [Fe/H] = $a$[O/H$]+b\mpΔb$ where a unit slope, $a=1$, implies a constant [O/Fe] abundance ratio. Oxygen and iron empirical abundance distributions are then determined for different subsamples, which are well explained by the theoretical predictions of multistage closed-(box+reservoir) (MCBR) chemical evolution models by taking into account the found correlations. The interpretation of these distributions in the framework of MCBR models gives us clues about inflow/outflow rates in these different Galactic regions and their corresponding evolution. Outflow rate for the thick and the thin disks are lower than the halo outflow rate. Moreover if the thin disk built up from the thick disk, both systems result of comparable masses. Besides that, the iron-to-oxygen yield ratio and the primary to not primary contribution ratio for the iron production are obtained from the data, resulting consistent with SNII progenitor nucleosynthesis and with the iron production from SNIa supernova events.
We present chemical abundance analyses of sodium, iron-peak and neutron-capture elements for 97 kinematically selected thick disk, inner halo and outer halo stars with metallicities -3.3<[Fe/H]<-0.5. The main aim of this study is to examine chemical similarities and differences among metal-poor stars belonging to these old Galactic components as a clue to determine their early chemodynamical evolution. In our previous paper, we obtained abundances of alpha elements by performing a one-dimensional LTE abundance analysis based on the high-resolution (R~50000) spectra obtained with the Subaru/HDS…
Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan telescopes we present detailed elemental abundances for 20 red giant stars in the outer Galactic disk, located at Galactocentric distances between 9 and 13 kpc. The outer disk sample is complemented with samples of red giants from the inner Galactic disk and the solar neighbourhood, analysed using identical methods. For Galactocentric distances beyond 10 kpc, we only find chemical patterns associated with the local thin disk, even for stars far above the Galactic plane. Our results show that the relative densi…
We present the abundance analysis of 97 nearby metal-poor (-3.3<[Fe/H]<-0.5) stars having kinematics characteristics of the Milky Way (MW) thick disk, inner, and outer stellar halos. The high-resolution, high-signal-to-noise optical spectra for the sample stars have been obtained with the High Dispersion Spectrograph mounted on the Subaru Telescope. Abundances of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca and Ti have been derived using a one-dimensional LTE abundance analysis code with Kurucz NEWODF model atmospheres. By assigning membership of the sample stars to the thick disk, inner or outer halo components based on t…
We use oxygen and argon abundances for planetary nebulae (PNe) with low internal extinction (progenitor ages of (>4.5 Gyr) and high extinction (progenitor ages <2.5 Gyr), as well as those of the H II regions, to constrain the chemical enrichment and star formation efficiency in the thin and thicker discs of M31. The argon element is produced in larger fraction by Type Ia supernovae (SNe) than oxygen. We find that the mean log(O/Ar) values of PNe as a function of their argon abundances, 12 + log(Ar/H), trace the inter-stellar matter (ISM) conditions at the time of birth of the M 31 disc PN prog…
Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with the MIKE spectrograph on the Magellan telescopes we present detailed elemental abundances for 64 red giant stars in the inner and outer Galactic disk. For the inner disk sample (4-7 kpc from the Galactic centre) we find that stars with both thin and thick disk abundance patterns are present while for Galactocentric distances beyond 10 kpc, we only find chemical patterns associated with the local thin disk, even for stars far above the Galactic plane. Our results show that the relative densities of the thick and thin disks are dramatically differen…
The relationship between abundances and orbital parameters for 235 F- and G-type intermediate- and low- mass stars in the Galaxy is analyzed. We found that there are abundance gradients in the thin disk in both radial and vertical directions (-0.116 dex/kpc and -0.309 dex/kpc respectively). The gradients appear to be flatter as the Galaxy evolves. No gradient is found in the thick disk based on 18 thick disk stars. These results indicate that the ELS model is mainly suitable for the evolution of the thin disk, while the SZ model is more suitable for the evolution of the thick disk. Additionall…
[ABRIDGED] We determine Li abundances for a well-studied sample of 714 F and G dwarf, turn-off, and subgiant stars in the solar neighbourhood. The analysis is based on line synthesis of the Li line at 6707 Å in high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio echelle spectra, obtained with the MIKE, FEROS, SOFIN, UVES, and FIES spectrographs. The presented Li abundances are corrected for non-LTE effects. Out of the sample of 714 stars we are able to determine Li abundances for 420 stars and upper limits on the Li abundance for another 121 stars. 18 of the stars with well-determined Li abundances…
We investigate the evolution of the abundance of fluorine in the Milky Way thick and thin discs by means of detailed chemical evolution models compared with recent observational data. The chemical evolution models adopted here have already been shown to fit the observed abundance patterns of CNO and $α$-elements as well as the metallicity distribution functions for the Galactic thick and thin disc stars. We apply them here to the study of the origin and evolution of fluorine, which is still a matter of debate. First, we study the importance of the various sites proposed for the production of f…
Star clusters, particularly those objects in the disk-bulge-halo interface are as of yet poorly charted, albeit carrying important information about the formation and the structure of the Milky Way. Here, we present a detailed chemical abundance study of the recently discovered object Gaia 1. Photometry has previously suggested it as an intermediate-age, moderately metal-rich system, although the exact values for its age and metallicity remained ambiguous in the literature. We measured detailed chemical abundances of 14 elements in four red giant members, from high-resolution (R=25000) spectra…
Linear [Q/H]-[O/H] relations, Q = Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, are inferred from a sample (N=67) of recently studied FGK-type dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood including different populations. Regression line slope and intercept estimators and related variance estimators are determined. With regard to the straight line, [Q/H] = aQ [O/H] + bQ, sample stars display along a "main sequence", [Q,O] = [aQ,bQ, Delta bQ], leaving aside the two OL stars which, in most cases (e.g., Na), lie outside. A unit slope, aQ = 1, implies Q is a primary element synthesised via SNII progenitors in presence…
We obtain a magnitude-limited sample of Andromeda (M 31) disc PNe with chemical abundance estimated through the direct detection of the [OIII] 4363 $\mathring{\mathrm A}$ line. This leads to $205$ and $200$ PNe with oxygen and argon abundances respectively. We find that high- and low-extinction M 31 disc PNe have statistically distinct argon and oxygen abundance distributions. In the radial range $2-30$ kpc, the older low-extinction disc PNe are metal-poorer on average with a slightly positive radial oxygen abundance gradient ($0.006 \pm 0.003$ dex/kpc) and slightly negative for argon ($-0.005…
Recent observations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have shown a high Fe~II/Mg~II line-flux ratio in their broad-line regions, nearly independent of redshift up to $z \gtrsim 6$. The high flux ratio requires rapid production of iron in galactic nuclei to reach an abundance ratio of ${\rm [Fe/Mg]} \gtrsim 0.2$ as high as those observed in matured galaxies in the local universe. We propose a possible explanation of rapid iron enrichment in AGNs by massive star formation that follows a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) with a power-law index of $Γ$ larger than the canonical value of $Γ=-2.35…
The Bulge is the least understood major stellar population of the Milky Way. Most of what we know about the formation and evolution of the Bulge comes from bright giant stars. The underlying assumption that giants represent all the stars, and accurately trace the chemical evolution of a stellar population, is under debate. In particular, recent observations of a few microlensed dwarf stars give a very different picture of the evolution of the Bulge from that given by the giant stars. [ABRIDGED] We perform a detailed elemental abundance analysis of dwarf stars in the Galactic bulge, based on hi…
We highlight some results from our detailed abundance analysis study of 703 kinematically selected F and G dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood. The analysis is based on spectra of high-resolution (R=45000 to 110000) and high signal-to-noise (S/N=150 to 300). The main findings include: (1) at a given metallicity, the thick disk abundance trends are more $α$-enhanced than those of the thin disk; (2) the metal-rich limit of the thick disk reaches at least solar metallicities; (3) the metal-poor limit of the thin disk is around [Fe/H]=-0.8; (4) the thick disk shows an age-metallicity gradient; …
Context. Recent observations of the Bulge, e.g., its X-shape, cylindrical stellar motions, and a potential fraction of young stars propose that it formed through secular evolution of the disk and not through gas dissipation and/or mergers, as thought previously. Aims. We measure abundances of six iron-peak elements (Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni) in the local thin and thick disks as well as the Bulge to provide additional observational constraints for Galaxy formation and chemical evolution models. Methods. We use high-resolution optical spectra of 291 K giants in the local disk mostly obtained by …
We study the evolution of nitrogen in the Galactic halo, thick disc, thin disc and bulge by comparing detailed chemical evolution models with recent observations. The models used in this work have already been constrained to explain the abundance patterns of $α$-elements and the metallicity distribution functions of halo, disc and bulge stars; here, we adopt them to investigate the origin and evolution of N in the different Galactic components. First, we consider different sets of yields and study the importance of the various channels proposed for N production. Secondly, we apply the referenc…
We have obtained high-resolution spectra and carried out a detailed elemental abundance analysis for a new sample of 899 F and G dwarf stars in the Solar neighbourhood. The results allow us to, in a multi-dimensional space consisting of stellar ages, detailed elemental abundances, and full kinematic information for the stars, study and trace their respective origins. Here we briefly address selection criteria and discuss how to define a thick disc star. The results are discussed in the context of galaxy formation.
We analyze the oxygen abundances of a stellar sample representative of the two major Galactic populations: the thin and thick disks. The aim is to investigate the differences between members of the Galactic disks and to contribute to the understanding on the origin of oxygen chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. The analysis is based on the [O\,{\sc i}]=6300.30\,Å~ oxygen line in HR spectra ($R\sim$52,500) obtained from the GES Survey. By comparing the observed spectra with a theoretical dataset, computed in LTE with the SPECTRUM synthesis and ATLAS12 codes, we derive the oxygen abundances of 516…
We use the method of statistical parallax to constrain the distance-scale zero points and analyze the kinematics of extensive samples of Galactic classical Cepheids, RR Lyrae type variables, and blue horizontal branch stars, which serve as standard candles/kinematic tracers of various Galactic populations. We obtain three consistent estimates for the local circular velocity based on the mean velocities of halo RR Lyrae variables, BHB stars, and Galactic rotation curve inferred from Cepheid data with an average value of 210+/-6 km/s, which is close to the average circular velocity in the 5-40 k…
The disc structure of the Milky Way is marked by a chemical dichotomy, with high-alpha and low-alpha abundance sequences, traditionally identified with the geometric thick and thin discs. This identification is aided by the old ages of the high-alpha stars, and lower average ages of the low-alpha ones. Recent large scale surveys such as APOGEE have provided a wealth of data on this chemical structure, including showing that an identification of chemical and geometric thick discs is not exact, but the origin of the chemical dichotomy has remained unclear. Here we demonstrate that a dichotomy ar…
Recent detection of the isotope $^7$Be (that decays into $^7$Li) in the outburst of classical novae confirms the suggestion made in the 70s that novae could make $^7$Li. We reconsidered the role of novae as producers of Li by means of a detailed model of the chemical evolution of the Milky Way. We showed that novae could be the Galactic lithium source accounting for the observed increase of Li abundances in the thin disk with stellar metallicity. The best agreement with the upper envelope of the observed Li abundances is obtained for a delay time of ~ 1 Gyr for the nova production and for an e…
The aim of this work is to determine abundances of neutron-capture elements for thin- and thick-disc F, G, and K stars in several sky fields near the north ecliptic pole and to compare the results with the Galactic chemical evolution models, to explore elemental gradients according to stellar ages, mean galactocentric distances, and maximum heights above the Galactic plane. The observational data were obtained with the 1.65m telescope at the Moletai Astronomical Observatory and a fibre-fed high-resolution spectrograph. Elemental abundances were determined using a differential spectrum synthesi…

We present abundances for 20 elements for stars in two stellar streams identified by Arifyanto & Fuchs (2006, A&A, 449, 533): 18 stars from the Arcturus stream and 26 from a new stream, which we call AF06 stream, both from the Galactic thick disk. Results show both streams are metal-poor and very old (10$-$14 Gyrs) with kinematics and abundances overlapping with the properties of local field thick disk stars. Both streams exhibit a range in metallicity but with relative elemental abundances that are identical to those of thick disk stars of the same metallicity. These results show that neither…
The GALAH survey targets one million stars in the southern hemisphere down to a limiting magnitude of V = 14 at the Anglo- Australian Telescope. The project aims to measure up to 30 elemental abundances and radial velocities (~1 km/s accuracy) for each star at a resolution of R = 28000. These elements fall into 8 independent groups (e.g. alpha, Fe peak, r-process). For all stars, Gaia will provide distances to 1% and transverse velocities to 1 km/s or better, giving us a 14D set of parameters for each star, i.e. 6D phase space and 8D abundance space. There are many scientic applications but he…
The single stable isotope of beryllium is a pure product of cosmic-ray spallation in the ISM. Assuming that the cosmic-rays are globally transported across the Galaxy, the beryllium production should be a widespread process and its abundance should be roughly homogeneous in the early-Galaxy at a given time. Thus, it could be useful as a tracer of time. In an investigation of the use of Be as a cosmochronometer and of its evolution in the Galaxy, we found evidence that in a log(Be/H) vs. [alpha/Fe] diagram the halo stars separate into two components. One is consistent with predictions of evolut…
The evolution of the metal content of the universe can be tracked through rest-frame UV spectroscopy of damped Ly-$α$ systems (DLAs). Gas-phase abundances in DLAs must be corrected for dust depletion effects, which can be accomplished by calibrating the relation between abundance ratios such as [Zn/Fe] and depletions (the fraction of metals in gas, as opposed to dust). Using samples of gas-phase abundances and depletions in the Milky Way (MW), LMC, and SMC, we demonstrate that the relation between [Zn/Fe] and other abundance ratios does not change significantly between these local galaxies and…
The stellar velocity ellipsoid of the solar neighbour is re-examined using intermediate-old mono-abundances stellar groups with high quality chemistry data together with parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia DR1. We find the average velocity dispersion values for the three space velocity components for the thin and thick disc of (σ_{U},σ_{V},σ_{W})_{thin} = (33 \pm 4, 28 \pm 2, 23 \pm 2) and (σ_{U},σ_{V},σ_{W})_{thick} = (57 \pm 6, 38 \pm 5, 37 \pm 4) km s^{-1}, respectively. The mean values of the ratio between the semi-axes of the velocity ellipsoid for the thin disc are found to be, σ_{V}…
The atmospheric parameters and abundances of Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti have been determined for 20 stars using the Gaia DR2 parallaxes, high-resolution spectra, and the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) line formation modeling. A sample of stars with homogeneous data on the abundances of alpha-process elements has thus been increased to 94. It is shown that applying a non-LTE approach and classical 1D atmospheric models with spectroscopically determined surface gravities based on Fe~I and Fe~II lines yields reliable results. Analysis of the full sample confirms the conclusions of earlier …
Oxygen and carbon are important elements in stellar populations. Their behavior refers to the formation history of the stellar populations. C and O abundances would also obviously influence stellar opacities and the overall metal abundance $Z$. With observed high-quality spectroscopic properties, we construct stellar models with C and O elements, to give more accurate ages for 70 metal-poor dwarfs, which have been determined to be high-$α$ halo, low-$α$ halo and thick-disk stars. Our results show that high-$α$ halo stars are relatively older than low-$α$ halo stars by around 2.0 Gyr. The thick…
We analyse the structure and chemical enrichment of a Milky Way-like galaxy with a stellar mass of 2 10^{10} M_sun, formed in a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. It is disk-dominated with a flat rotation curve, and has a disk scale length similar to the Milky Way's, but a velocity dispersion that is ~50% higher. Examining stars in narrow [Fe/H] and [α/Fe] abundance ranges, we find remarkable qualitative agreement between this simulation and observations: a) The old stars lie in a thickened distribution with a short scale length, while the young stars form a thinner disk, with scale lengt…
Lithium abundance in most of the warm metal-poor main sequence stars shows a constant plateau (A(Li)~2.2 dex) and then the upper envelope of the lithium vs. metallicity distribution increases as we approach solar metallicity. Meteorites, which carry information about the chemical composition of the interstellar medium at the solar system formation time, show a lithium abundance A(Li)~3.26 dex. This pattern reflects the Li enrichment history of the interstellar medium during the Galaxy lifetime. After the initial Li production in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the sources of the enrichment include A…
We analyze high quality abundances data of solar neighborhood stars and show that there are two distinct regimes of [alpha/Fe] versus age which we identify as the epochs of the thick and thin disk formation. A tight correlation between metallicity and [alpha/Fe] versus age is clearly identifiable on thick disk stars, implying that this population formed from a well mixed ISM, over a time scale of 4-5 Gyr. Thick disk stars vertical velocity dispersion correlate with age, with the youngest objects having as small scale heights as those of thin disk stars. A natural consequence of these two resul…
We have obtained high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra for 899 F and G dwarf stars in the Solar neighbourhood. The stars were selected on the basis of their kinematic properties to trace the thin and thick discs, the Hercules stream, and the metal-rich stellar halo. A significant number of stars with kinematic properties 'in between' the thin and thick discs were also observed in order to in greater detail investigate the dichotomy of the Galactic disc. All stars have been homogeneously analysed, using the exact same methods, atomic data, model atmospheres, etc., and also truly differe…
We analyse a set of very metal-poor stars for which accurate chemical abundances have been obtained as part of the ESO Large Program "First stars" in the light of the Gaia DR2 data. The kinematics and orbital properties of the stars in the sample show they probably belong to the thick disc, partially heated to halo kinematics, and to the accreted Nissen & Schuster-Gaia Sausage-Enceladus satellite. The continuity of these properties with stars at both higher ($\rm [Fe/H]>-2$) and lower metallicities ($\rm [Fe/H]<-4.$) suggests that the Galaxy at $\rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -0.5$ and down to at least $…
Basing on the large volume \textit{Gaia} Early Data Release 3 and LAMOST Data Release 5 data, we estimate the bias-corrected binary fractions of the field late G and early K dwarfs. A stellar locus outlier method is used in this work, which works well for binaries of various periods and inclination angles with single epoch data. With a well-selected, distance-limited sample of about 90 thousand GK dwarfs covering wide stellar chemical abundances, it enables us to explore the binary fraction variations with different stellar populations. The average binary fraction is 0.42$\pm$0.01 for the whol…
We analyze a new kinematic survey that includes accurate proper motions derived from SDSS DR7 positions, combined with multi-epoch measurements from the GSC-II database. By means of the SDSS spectro-photometric data (effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and radial velocities), we estimate photometric parallaxes for a sample of 27,000 FGK (sub)dwarfs with [Fe/H]<-0.5, which we adopted as tracers of the seven-dimensional space distribution (kinematic phase distribution plus chemical abundance) of the thick disk and inner halo within a few kiloparsecs of the Sun. We find evidence …
Manganese is mainly produced in type II SNe during explosive silicon burning, in incomplete Si-burning regions, and depends on several nucleosynthesis environment conditions, such as mass cut beween the matter ejected and falling back onto the remnant, electron and neutron excesses, mixing fallback, and explosion energy. Manganese is also produced in type Ia SNe. The aim of this work is the study of abundances of the iron-peak element Mn in 56 bulge giants, among which 13 are red clump stars. Four bulge fields along the minor axis are inspected. The study of abundances of Mn-over-Fe as a funct…
This is a brief overview of the elemental abundance patterns that have been observed in the different Galactic stellar populations. Main focus is on studies that are based on high-resolution spectra of dwarf and subgiant stars, and in some cases red giant stars. Of particular interest is the thin-thick disk dichotomy, the variation of abundances and stellar ages with galactocentric radius, multiple stellar populations in the Galactic bulge region, and how some of these may be connected with other Galactic populations.
Different stellar sub-populations of the Milky Way's stellar disk are known to have different vertical scale heights, their thickness increasing with age. Using SEGUE spectroscopic survey data, we have recently shown that mono-abundance sub-populations, defined in the [α/Fe]-[Fe/H] space, are well described by single exponential spatial-density profiles in both the radial and the vertical direction; therefore any star of a given abundance is clearly associated with a sub-population of scale height h_z. Here, we work out how to determine the stellar surface-mass density contributions at the sol…
We extend our previous work on the age-chemical abundance structure of the Galactic outer disc to the inner disc (4 < r < 8 kpc) based on the SDSS/APOGEE survey. Different from the outer disc, the inner disc stars exhibit a clear bimodal distribution in the [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane. While a number of scenarios have been proposed in the literature, it remains challenging to recover this bimodal distribution with theoretical models. To this end, we present a chemical evolution model embedding a complex multi-phase inner disc formation scenario that matches the observed bimodal [Mg/Fe]-[Fe/H] distrib…
This contribution presents an overview of the evolution of Li abundances in stars of the Galactic thin and thick discs, from the observational point of view. The focus is on Li abundances obtained by recent projects and surveys. To separate thin and thick disc stars, both chemical abundances, kinematics, and ages can be used. For thick disc stars, the Li evolution is uncertain, as differences appear depending on how the stars were separated. Nevertheless, it seems clear that most of the Galactic enrichment in Li takes place in the thin disc. Literature consensus also seems to exist regarding t…
Infrared (IR) absorption spectra of individual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) containing methyl (-CH3), methylene (>CH2), or diamond-like *CH groups and IR spectra of mixtures of methylated and hydrogenated PAHs prepared by gas phase condensation were measured at room temperature (as grains in pellets) and at low temperature (isolated in Ne matrices). In addition, the PAH blends were subjected to an in-depth molecular structure analysis by means of high-performance liquid chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-f…
Theories of thick disk formation can be differentiated by measurements of stellar elemental abundances. We have undertaken a study of metal-poor stars selected from the RAVE spectroscopic survey of bright stars to establish whether or not there is a significant population of metal-poor thick-disk stars ([Fe/H] <~ -1.0) and to measure their elemental abundances. In this paper, we present abundances of four alpha-elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti) and iron for a subsample of 212 RGB and 31 RC/HB stars from this study. We find that the [alpha/Fe] ratios are enhanced implying that enrichment proceeded by p…
We revisit the Galactic chemical evolution of oxygen, addressing the systematic errors inherent in classical determinations of the oxygen abundance that arise from the use of one dimensional hydrostatic (1D) model atmospheres and from the assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We perform detailed 3D non-LTE radiative transfer calculations for atomic oxygen lines across a grid of 3D hydrodynamic stag- ger model atmospheres for dwarfs and subgiants. We apply our grid of predicted line strengths of the [OI] 630 nm and OI 777 nm lines using accurate stellar parameters from the litera…
Stellar mass and metallicity are factors that affect the neutron-capture process. Due to this, the enrichment of the ISM and the abundance of neutron-capture elements vary with time, making them suitable probes for the Galactic chemical evolution. In this work we make a differential comparison of neutron-capture element abundances determined in the local disk(s) and the bulge, focusing on minimising possible systematic effects in the analysis, with the aim of finding possible differences/similarities between the populations. Abundances are determined for Zr, La, Ce and Eu in 45 bulge giants an…
In this work we present chemical abundances of heavy elements (Z$>$28) for a homogeneous sample of 1059 stars from HARPS planet search program. We also derive ages using parallaxes from Hipparcos and Gaia DR1 to compare the results. We study the [X/Fe] ratios for different populations and compare them with models of Galactic chemical evolution. We find that thick disk stars are chemically disjunt for Zn and Eu. Moreover, the high-alpha metal-rich population presents an interesting behaviour, with clear overabundances of Cu and Zn and lower abundances of Y and Ba with respect to thin disk stars…
Determining elemental abundances of bulge stars can, via chemical evolution modeling, help to understand the formation and evolution of the bulge. Recently there have been claims both for and against the bulge having a different [$α$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H]-trend as compared to the local thick disk possibly meaning a faster, or at least different, formation time scale of the bulge as compared to the local thick disk. We aim to determine the abundances of oxygen, magnesium, calcium, and titanium in a sample of 46 bulge K-giants, 35 of which have been analyzed for oxygen and magnesium in previous works, …
This paper focuses on carbon that is one of the most abundant elements in the Universe and is of high importance in the field of nucleosynthesis and galactic and stellar evolution. Even nowadays, the origin of carbon and the relative importance of massive and low- to intermediate-mass stars in producing it is still a matter of debate. In this paper we aim at better understanding the origin of carbon by studying the trends of [C/H], [C/Fe],and [C/Mg] versus [Fe/H], and [Mg/H] for 2133 FGK dwarf stars from the fifth Gaia-ESO Survey internal data release (GES iDR5). The availability of accurate p…
Atmospheric parameters and oxygen abundances of 825 nearby FGK stars are derived using high-quality spectra and a non-LTE analysis of the 777 nm O I triplet lines. We assign a kinematic probability for the stars to be thin-disk (P1), thick-disk (P2), and halo (P3) members. We confirm previous findings of enhanced [O/Fe] in thick-disk (P2>0.5) relative to thin-disk (P1>0.5) stars with [Fe/H]<-0.2, as well as a "knee" that connects the mean [O/Fe]-[Fe/H] trend of thick-disk stars with that of thin-disk members at [Fe/H]>-0.2. Nevertheless, we find that the kinematic membership criterion fails at…
