We analyze a new kinematic survey that includes accurate proper motions derived from SDSS DR7 positions, combined with multi-epoch measurements from the GSC-II database. By means of the SDSS spectro-photometric data (effective temperature, surface gravity, metallicity, and radial velocities), we estimate photometric parallaxes for a sample of 27,000 FGK (sub)dwarfs with [Fe/H]<-0.5, which we adopted as tracers of the seven-dimensional space distribution (kinematic phase distribution plus chemical abundance) of the thick disk and inner halo within a few kiloparsecs of the Sun. We find evidence of a kinematics-metallicity correlation, dVphi/d[Fe/H]=40-50 km/s/dex, amongst thick disk stars located between one and three kiloparsecs from the plane and with abundance -1 <[Fe/H]< -0.5, while no significant correlation is present for [Fe/H]> -0.5. In addition, we estimate a shallow vertical rotation velocity gradient, dVphi/d|z| = -19 +/- 2 km/s/kpc, for the thick disk between 1 kpc < |z| < 3 kpc, and a low prograde rotation, 37 +/- 3 km/s for the inner halo up to 4 kpc. Finally, we briefly discuss the implications of these findings for the thick disk formation scenarios in the context of CDM hierarchical galaxy formation mechanisms and of secular evolutionary processes in galactic disks.
We have developed a novel Markov Chain Mote Carlo (MCMC) chemical "painting" technique to explore possible radial and vertical metallicity gradients for the thick disc progenitor. In our analysis we match an N-body simulation to the data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. We assume that the thick disc has a constant scale-height and has completed its formation at an early epoch, after which time radial mixing of its stars has taken place. Under these assumptions, we find that the initial radial metallicity gradient of the thick disc progenitor shou…
We examine the metallicity distribution of the Galactic thick disk using F, G, and K dwarf stars selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Data Release 8. Using the large sample of dwarf stars with proper motions and spectroscopically determined stellar parameters, metallicity gradients in the radial direction for various heights above the Galactic plane and in the vertical direction for various radial distances from the Galaxy center have been found. In particular, we find a vertical metallicity gradient of -0.113 +/- 0.010 (-0.125 +/- 0.008) dex/kpc using an isochrone (photometric) distanc…
Using N-body simulations of the Galactic disks, we qualitatively study how the metallicity distributions of the thick and thin disk stars are modified by radial mixing induced by the bar and spiral arms. We show that radial mixing drives a positive vertical metallicity gradient in the mono-age disk population whose initial scale-height is constant and initial radial metallicity gradient is tight and negative. On the other hand, if the initial disk is flaring, with scale-height increasing with galactocentric radius, radial mixing leads to a negative vertical metallicity gradient, which is consi…
This study is based on high quality astrometric and spectroscopic data from the most recent releases by Gaia and APOGEE. We select $58\,882$ thin and thick disk red giants, in the Galactocentric (cylindrical) distance range $5 < R < 13$~kpc and within $|z| < 3$~kpc, for which full chemo-kinematical information is available. Radial chemical gradients, $\partial \rm{[M/H]} / \partial \rm{R}$, and rotational velocity-metallicity correlations, $\partial V_ϕ/ \partial \rm{[M/H]}$, are re-derived firmly uncovering that the thick disk velocity-metallicity correlation maintains its positiveness over t…
We analyze the radial and vertical metallicity and [alpha/Fe] gradients of the disk stars of a disk galaxy simulated in a fully cosmological setting with the chemodynamical galaxy evolution code, GCD+. We study how the radial abundance gradients vary as a function of height above the plane and find that the metallicity ([alpha/Fe]) gradient becomes more positive (negative) with increasing height, changing sign around 1.5 kpc above the plane. At the largest vertical height (2 < |z| < 3 kpc), our simulated galaxy shows a positive radial metallicity gradient. We find that the positive metallicity…

Aims. Using a suite of cosmological chemodynamical disc galaxy simulations, we assess how (a) radial metallicity gradients evolve with scaleheight; (b) the vertical metallicity gradients change through the thick disc; and (c) the vertical gradient of the stellar rotation velocity varies through the disc. We compare with the Milky Way to search for analogous trends. Methods. We analyse five simulated spiral galaxies with masses comparable to the Milky Way. The simulations span a range of star formation and energy feedback strengths and prescriptions, particle- and grid-based hydrodynamical impl…

We aim to understand the accretion history of the Milky Way by exploring the vertical and radial properties of the Galactic thick disc. We study the chemical and kinematic properties of roughly a thousand spectra of faint magnitude foreground Galactic stars observed serendipitously during extra-galactic surveys in four lines-of-sight: three in the southern Galactic hemisphere (surveys of the Carina, Fornax and Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxies) and one in the northern Galactic hemisphere (a survey of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy). The foreground stars span distances up to 3kpc from the…
The interstellar thick disks of galaxies serve as the interface between the thin star-forming disk, where feedback-driven outflows originate, and the distant halo, the repository for accreted gas. We present optical emission line spectroscopy of a luminous thick disk H II region located at $z = 860$ pc above the plane of the spiral galaxy NGC 4013 taken with the Multi-Object Double Spectrograph on the Large Binocular Telescope. This nebula, with an H$α$ luminosity $\sim4-7$ times that of the Orion nebula, surrounds a luminous cluster of young, hot stars that ionize the surrounding interstellar…
In this letter we examine the evolution of the radial metallicity gradient induced by secular processes, in the disk of an $N$-body Milky Way-like galaxy. We assign a [Fe/H] value to each particle of the simulation according to an initial, cosmologically motivated, radial chemical distribution and let the disk dynamically evolve for 6 Gyr. This direct approach allows us to take into account only the effects of dynamical evolution and to gauge how and to what extent they affect the initial chemical conditions. The initial [Fe/H] distribution increases with R in the inner disk up to R ~ 10 kpc a…
We examine the metallicity trends in the Milky Way (MW) bulge - using APOGEE DR13 data - and explore their origin by comparing two N-body models of isolated galaxies which develop a bar and a boxy/peanut (b/p) bulge. Both models have been proposed as scenarios for reconciling a disc origin of the MW bulge with a negative vertical metallicity gradient. The first model is a superposition of co-spatial, i.e. overlapping, disc populations with different scaleheights, kinematics and metallicities. In this model the thick, metal-poor, and centrally concentrated disc populations contribute significan…
We study the radial metallicity gradient $Δ[M/H]/ΔR_g$ as a function of [Mg/Fe] and $|Z|$ with the help of a guiding radius based on the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment and Gaia and then analyze the radial migration effect on the radial metallicity gradient and metallicity-rotation gradient between the Galactic thin and thick disks. The derived trend of gradient $Δ[M/H]/ΔR_g$ versus [Mg/Fe] shows a transition at [Mg/Fe] $\sim 0.18$ dex, below which the gradient is negative and varies a little as [Mg/Fe] increases; however, it changes sharply in [Mg/Fe] ranges of 0.16-0.1…
We determined the chemical and kinematic properties of the Galactic thin and thick disk using a sample of 307,246 A/F/G/K-type giant stars from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey and Gaia DR2 survey. Our study found that the thick disk globally exhibits no metallicity radial gradient, but the inner disk ($R \le 8$ kpc) and the outer disk ($R>8$ kpc) have different gradients when they are studied separately. The thin disk also shows two different metallicity radial gradients for the inner disk and the outer disk, and has steep metallicity vertical gradient of d[Fe/H]/d$|z|$ $=-0.12\pm0.0007$ dex k…
By selecting in the RAVE-DR4 survey the stars located between 1 and 2 kpc above the Galactic plane, we question the consistency of the simplest three-component model (thin disc, thick disc, halo) for the Milky Way. We confirm that the metallicity and azimuthal velocity distribution functions of the thick disc are not Gaussian. In particular, we find that the thick disc has an extended metallicity tail going at least down to [M/H]=-2 dex, contributing roughly at 3% of the entire thick disc population and having a shorter scale-length compared to the canonical thick disc. The mean azimuthal velo…

Using the stellar atmospheric parameters such as effective temperature and metallicity derived from SDSS spectra for 2200 main sequence (MS) stars which were also observed by Beijing - Arizona - Taiwan - Connecticut (BATC) photometric system, we develop the polynomial photometric calibration method to evaluate the stellar effective temperature and metallicity for BATC multi-color photometric data. This calibration method has been applied to about 160 000 MS stars from 67 BATC observed fields. Those stars have colors and magnitudes in the ranges 0.1 < d - h < 1.4 and 14.0 < d < 21.0. We find th…
Previous studies have found that the Galactic rotation velocity-metallicity (V-[Fe/H]) relations for the thin and thick disk populations show negative and positive slopes, respectively. The first Gaia Data Release includes the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) information, which we use to analyze the V-[Fe/H] relation for a strictly selected sample with high enough astrometric accuracy. We aim to arrive at an explanation for the slopes of the V-[Fe/H] relationship. We measure the V-[Fe/H] relation for thin and thick disk stars classified on the basis of their [$α$/Fe] and [Fe/H] abundance…
We study the role of radial migration of stars on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way disk. In particular, we are interested in the impact of that process on the local properties of the disk (age-metallicity relation and its dispersion, metallicity distribution, evolution of abundance ratios) and on the morphological properties of the resulting thick and thin disks. We use a model with several new or up-dated ingredients: atomic and molecular gas phases, star formation depending on molecular gas, yields from the recent homogeneous grid provided by Nomoto et al. (2013), observationally infer…
Transition type dwarf galaxies are thought to be systems undergoing the process of transformation from a star-forming into a passively evolving dwarf, which makes them particularly suitable to study evolutionary processes driving the existence of different dwarf morphological types. Here we present results from a spectroscopic survey of ~200 individual red giant branch stars in the Phoenix dwarf, the closest transition type with a comparable luminosity to "classical" dwarf galaxies. We measure a systemic heliocentric velocity V = -21.2 km/s. Our survey reveals the clear presence of prolate rot…
Based on the LAMOST survey and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we use low-resolution spectra of 130,043 F/G-type dwarf stars to study the kinematics and metallicity properties of the Galactic disk. Our study shows that the stars with poorer metallicity and larger vertical distance from Galactic plane tend to have larger eccentricity and velocity dispersion. After separating the sample stars into likely thin-disk and thick-disk sub-sample, we find that there exits a negative gradient of rotation velocity $V_ϕ$ with metallicity [Fe/H] for the likely thin-disk sub-sample, and the thick-disk sub-…
Based on the second Gaia data release (DR2), combined with the LAMOST and APOGEE spectroscopic surveys, we study the kinematics and metallicity distribution of the high-velocity stars that have a relative speed of at least 220 ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$ with respect to the local standard of rest in the Galaxy. The rotational velocity distribution of the high-velocity stars with [Fe/H] $>-1.0$ dex can be well described by a two-Gaussian model, with peaks at $V_ϕ\sim +164.2\pm0.7$ and $V_ϕ\sim +3.0\pm0.3$ ${\rm km\ s^{-1}}$, associated with the thick disk and halo, respectively. This implies that there …
A curious rotation period distribution in the Color-Magnitude-Period Diagram (CMPD) of the Kepler field was recently revealed, thanks to data from Gaia and Kepler spacecraft. It was found that redder and brighter stars are spinning slower than the rest of the main sequence. On the theoretical side, it was demonstrated that metallicity should affect the rotational evolution of stars as well as their evolution in the Hertzprung-Rüssel or Color-Magnitude diagram. In this work we combine this dataset with medium and high resolution spectroscopic metallicities and carefully select main sequence sin…
We used the ugr magnitudes of 1,437,467 F-G type main-sequence stars with metal abundance -2<[Fe/H]<+0.2 dex and estimated radial and vertical metallicity gradients for high Galactic-latitude fields (b>50) of the Milky Way Galaxy. The radial metallicity gradient d[Fe/H]/dR=-0.042(0.011) dex/kpc estimated for the stars with 1.31<z<=1.74 kpc is attributed to the thin-disc population. While, the radial gradients evaluated for stars at higher vertical distances are close to zero indicating that the thick disc and halo have not undergone a radial collapse phase at least at high Galactic latitudes. …
We present a scenario of the chemical enrichment of the solar neighborhood that solves the G-dwarf problem by taking into account constraints on a larger scale. We argue that the Milky Way disk within 10 kpc has been enriched to solar metallicity by a massive stellar population: the thick disk, which itself formed from a massive turbulent gaseous disk. The key new consideration is that the pre-enrichment provided by the thick disk is not related to the mass fraction of this stellar population at the solar radius, as is classically assumed in inside-out scenarios, but is actually related to the…
We employ our Bayesian Machine Learning framework BINGO (Bayesian INference for Galactic archaeOlogy) to obtain high-quality stellar age estimates for 68,360 red giant and red clump stars present in the 17th data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the APOGEE-2 high-resolution spectroscopic survey. By examining the denoised age-metallicity relationship of the Galactic disc stars, we identify a drop in metallicity with an increase in [Mg/Fe] at an early epoch, followed by a chemical enrichment episode with increasing [Fe/H] and decreasing [Mg/Fe]. This result is congruent with the chemical…
Metallicity Gradients in the Milky Way Disk as Observed by the SEGUE Survey
The data reveal that the radial metallicity gradient becomes flat at heights |Z| >。
Lithium abundance in most of the warm metal-poor main sequence stars shows a constant plateau (A(Li)~2.2 dex) and then the upper envelope of the lithium vs. metallicity distribution increases as we approach solar metallicity. Meteorites, which carry information about the chemical composition of the interstellar medium at the solar system formation time, show a lithium abundance A(Li)~3.26 dex. This pattern reflects the Li enrichment history of the interstellar medium during the Galaxy lifetime. After the initial Li production in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, the sources of the enrichment include A…
The metallicity of star-forming gas in galaxies from the EAGLE simulations increases with stellar mass. Here we investigate whether the scatter around this relation correlates with morphology and/or stellar kinematics. At redshift $z=0$, galaxies with more rotational support have lower metallicities on average when the stellar mass is below $M_\star\approx 10^{10}~{\rm M}_\odot$. This trend inverts at higher values of $M_\star$, when prolate galaxies show typically lower metallicity. At increasing redshifts, the trend between rotational support and metallicity becomes weaker at low stellar mas…
We study the metallicity distribution and kinematic properties of 4,680 A/F/G/K-type giant stars with $|z|>$ 5 kpc selected from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The metallicity distribution of giant stars with 5 $<|z|\leqslant$ 15 kpc can be described by a three-peak Gaussian model with peaks at [Fe/H] $\sim-0.6\pm0.1$, $-1.2\pm0.3$ and $-2.0\pm0.2$, corresponding to the ratio of 19$\%$, 74$\%$ and 7$\%$, respectively. The $\rm{[α/Fe]}$ is used to associate the three peaks with the thick disk, inner-halo and outer-halo components of the Galaxy. The metallicity distribution of these giant star…
Asteroseismology is a promising tool to study Galactic structure and evolution because it can probe the ages of stars. Earlier attempts comparing seismic data from the {\it Kepler} satellite with predictions from Galaxy models found that the models predicted more low-mass stars compared to the observed distribution of masses. It was unclear if the mismatch was due to inaccuracies in the Galactic models, or the unknown aspects of the selection function of the stars. Using new data from the K2 mission, which has a well-defined selection function, we find that an old metal-poor thick disc, as use…
We analyze high quality abundances data of solar neighborhood stars and show that there are two distinct regimes of [alpha/Fe] versus age which we identify as the epochs of the thick and thin disk formation. A tight correlation between metallicity and [alpha/Fe] versus age is clearly identifiable on thick disk stars, implying that this population formed from a well mixed ISM, over a time scale of 4-5 Gyr. Thick disk stars vertical velocity dispersion correlate with age, with the youngest objects having as small scale heights as those of thin disk stars. A natural consequence of these two resul…
The metallicity dependence of the wide binary fraction (WBF) is critical for studying the formation of wide binaries. While controversial results have been found in recent years. Here we combine the wide binary catalog recognized from Gaia EDR3 and stellar parameters from LAMOST to investigate this topic. Taking bias of the stellar temperature at given separations into account, we find that the relationship between the WBF and metallicity depends on temperature for the thin-disk at s > 200 AU. It changes from negative to positive as the temperature increases from 4000 K to 7500 K. This tempera…
We calculate the ages, orbits and phase-space coordinates for a sample of $\sim$4 million LAMOST and Gaia stars. The ages are crossmatched and compared with values from two other popular age catalogs which derive the ages using different methods. Of these $\sim$4 million stars, we select a sample of 1.3 million stars and investigate their radial metallicity gradients (as determined by orbital radii) as a function of their ages. This analysis is performed on various subsets of the data split by chemistry and orbital parameters. We find that commonly used selections for ``thin disk'' stars (such…
We have constructed a catalog containing best available astrometric, photometric, radial velocity and astrophysical data for mainly F-type and G-type stars (called the Astrometric catalog associated with Astrophysical Data, ACAD), which contains 27,553 records, and is used for the purpose of analyzing the stellar kinematics in the Solar neighborhood. Using the Lindblad-Oort Model and compiled ACAD, we calculated the Solar motion and Oort constants in different age/metallicity bins. The evolution of kinematical parameters with stellar age and metallicity were investigated directly. The results …
Supernovae (SNe) are considered to have a major role in dust enrichment of high redshift galaxies and, due to the short lifetimes of interstellar grains, in dust replenishment of local galaxies. Here we explore how SN dust yields depend on the mass, metallicity, and rotation rate of the progenitor stars, and on the properties of the explosion. To this aim, assuming uniform mixing inside the ejecta, we quantify the dust mass produced by a sample of SN models with progenitor masses $13~M_{\odot} \leq M \leq 120~M_{\odot}$, metallicity $\rm -3 \leq [Fe/H] \leq 0$, rotation rate $\rm v_{\rm rot} =…
NGC 6822 is the closest isolated dwarf irregular galaxy to the Milky Way. Its proximity and stellar mass ($10^8 M_\odot$, large for a dwarf galaxy) allow for a detailed study of its kinematic properties. The red giant branch (RGB) stars at the galaxy's center are particularly interesting because they are aligned on an axis perpendicular to the galaxy's more extended HI disk. We detected a velocity gradient among the RGB population using spectra from Keck DEIMOS. This rotation is aligned with the HI disk, but the sense of rotation is about the major axis of the central RGB population. We measur…
Recent large scale surveys of galactic bulge stars allowed to build a detailed map of the bulge kinematics. The bulge exhibits cylindrical rotation consistent with a disky origin which evolved through bar driven secular evolution. However correlations between metallicity and kinematics complicate this picture. In particular a metal-poor component with distinct kinematic signatures has been detected. Its origin, density profile and link with the other Milky Way stellar populations are currently still poorly constrained.
We show that the bulge and the disk of the Milky Way (MW) at R$\lesssim$7~kpc are well described by a unique chemical evolution and a two-phase star-formation history (SFH). We argue that the populations within this inner disk, not the entire disk, are the same, and that the outer Lindblad resonance (OLR) of the bar plays a key role in explaining this uniformity. In our model of a two-phase star formation history, the metallicity, [$α$/Fe] and [$α$/H] distributions, and age-metallicity relation are all compatible with the observations of both the inner disk and bulge. The dip at [Fe/H]$\sim$0 …
Massive rotating single stars with an initial metal composition appropriate for the dwarf galaxy I Zw 18 ([Fe/H]=$-$1.7) are modelled during hydrogen burning for initial masses of 9-300 M$_{\odot}$ and rotational velocities of 0-900 km s$^{-1}$. Internal mixing processes in these models were calibrated based on an observed sample of OB-type stars in the Magellanic Clouds. Even moderately fast rotators, which may be abundant at this metallicity, are found to undergo efficient mixing induced by rotation resulting in quasi chemically-homogeneous evolution. These homogeneously-evolving models reac…
We carry out a joint spatial-kinematical-metallicity analysis of globular clusters (GCs) around the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), using a homogeneous, high-quality spectroscopic dataset. In particular, we remove the contaminating young clusters that have plagued many previous analyses. We find that the clusters can be divided into three major metallicity groups based on their radial distributions: (1) an inner metal-rich group ([Fe/H] > -0.4), (2) a group with intermediate metallicity (with median [Fe/H]=-1), (3) and a metal-poor group, with [Fe/H] < -1.5. The metal-rich group has kinematics and spa…
Using data from the GALAH pilot survey, we determine properties of the Galactic thin and thick disks near the solar neighbourhood. The data cover a small range of Galactocentric radius ($7.9 \leq R_\mathrm{GC} \leq 9.5$ kpc), but extend up to 4 kpc in height from the Galactic plane, and several kpc in the direction of Galactic anti-rotation (at longitude $260 ^\circ \leq \ell \leq 280^\circ$). This allows us to reliably measure the vertical density and abundance profiles of the chemically and kinematically defined `thick' and `thin' disks of the Galaxy. The thin disk (low-$α$ population) exhib…
We analyze the effect of the sedimentation of $^{22}$Ne on the local white dwarf luminosity function by studying scenarios under different Galactic metallicity models. We make use of an up-to-date population synthesis code based on Monte Carlo techniques to derive the synthetic luminosity function. Constant solar metallicity models are not able to simultaneously reproduce the peak and cut-off of the white dwarf luminosity function. The extra release of energy due to $^{22}$Ne sedimentation piles up more objects in brighter bins of the faint end of the luminosity function. The contribution of a…
