In this paper, we show that the Hamiltonian approach to loop quantum gravity has a fermion doubling problem. To obtain this result, we couple loop quantum gravity to a free massless scalar and a chiral fermion field, gauge fixing the many fingered time gauge invariance by interpreting the scalar field as a physical clock. We expand around a quantum gravity state based on a regular lattice and consider the limit where the bare cosmological constant is large but the fermonic excitations have energies low in Planck units. We then make the case for identifying the energy spectrum in this approximation with that of a model of lattice fermion theory which is known to double.
We present some arguments showing spectrum doubling of matrix models in the limit $N\to\infty$ which is connected with fermionic determinant behaviour. The problems are similar to ones encountered in the lattice gauge theories with chiral fermions. One may discuss the ``physical meaning'' of the doubling states or ways to eliminate them. We briefly consider both situations.
In our previous paper (hep-th/9911087), we proposed a resolution for the fermion doubling problem in discrete field theories based on the fuzzy sphere and its cartesian products. In this paper after a review of that work, we bring out its relationship to the Ginsparg-Wilson approach.
The fermion doubling problem has an important impact on quantum gravity, by revealing the tension between fermion and the fundamental discreteness of quantum spacetime. In this work, we discover that in Loop Quantum Gravity, the quantum geometry involving superposition of states associated with lattice refinements provides a resolution to the fermion doubling problem. We construct and analyze the fermion propagator on the quantum geometry, and we show that all fermion doubler modes are suppressed in the propagator. Our result suggests that the superposition nature of quantum geometry should re…
In loop quantum gravity the discrete nature of quantum geometry acts as a natural regulator for matter theories. Studies of quantum field theory in quantum space-times in spherical symmetry in the canonical approach have shown that the main effect of the quantum geometry is to discretize the equations of matter fields. This raises the possibility that in the case of fermion fields one could confront the usual fermion doubling problem that arises in lattice gauge theories. We suggest, again based on recent results on spherical symmetry, that since the background space-times will generically inv…
In this paper, we discuss two features of the noncommmutative geometry and spectral action approach to the Standard Model: the fact that the model is inherently Euclidean, and that it requires a quadrupling of the fermionic degrees of freedom. We show how the two issues are intimately related. We give a precise prescription for the Wick rotation from the Euclidean theory to the Lorentzian one, eliminating the extra degrees of freedom. This requires not only projecting out mirror fermions, as has been done so far, and which leads to the correct Pfaffian, but also the elimination of the remainin…
Using a BRST treatment, we show that the equivalence of General Relativity and Shape Dynamics can be extended to a theory that respects the BRST-symmetries of General Relativity as well as the ones of an extended version of Shape Dynamics. This version of Shape Dynamics implements local spatial Weyl transformations as well as a local and abstract analogue of special conformal transformations. Standard effective field theory arguments suggest that the definition of a gravity theory should implement this duality between General Relativity and Shape Dynamics, thus the name "Doubly General Relativ…
It is shown that the neutrino oscillations phenomenon may be attributed to the Wilson fermion doubling phenomenon. The Wilson fermion doubling exists only on the lattices, both periodic and non-periodic (simplicial complexes). Just the last case plays a key role here. Thereby, the neutrino oscillations may show for the existence of a space-time granularity.
In this paper we carry out a quantization of gravity coupled to massless spin 1/2 fermions through the instanton representation of Plebanski gravity. We have constructed a Hilbert space of states for this model, and we have computed the Hamilton's equations of motion. The classical equations appear, at a superficial level, to be consistent with the quantum dynamics of the theory.
We study numerically the phase structure of a model of 3D gravity interacting with scalar fermions. We measure the 3D counterpart of the "string" susceptibility exponent as a function of the inverse Newton coupling $α$. We show that there are two phases separated by a critical point around $α_c \simeq 2$. The numerical results support the hypothesis that the phase structures of 3D and 2D simplicial gravity are qualitatively similar, the inverse Newton coupling in 3D playing the role of the central charge of matter in 2D.
We study expectation values of observables in three-dimensional spinfoam quantum gravity coupled to Dirac fermions. We revisit the model introduced by one of the authors and extend it to the case of massless fermionic fields. We introduce observables, analyse their symmetries and the corresponding proper gauge fixing. The Berezin integral over the fermionic fields is performed and the fermionic observables are expanded in open paths and closed loops associated to pure quantum gravity observables. We obtain the vertex amplitudes for gauge-invariant observables, while the expectation values of g…
In this note, we examine the scattering of two identical fermions in theories where fermionic fields minimally coupled to higher derivative gravity. In particular, we consider the extension of general relativity with $R^2$ corrections or non-local terms. We expand the action of fermions around the flat space background and obtain two fermion-one graviton vertex. Then, by considering the scattering amplitude of two fermions, we calculate the non-relativistic limit and that obtain the potential for two fermion-fermion interaction which would be the usual Newtonian potential corrected with a Yuka…
We investigate the consequences of the ambiguity of minimal coupling procedure for Einstein-Cartan gravity with Holst term and fermions. A new insight is provided into the nature and physical relevance of coupling procedures considered hitherto in the context of Ashtekar-Barbero-Immirzi formalism with fermions. The issue of physical effects of the Immirzi parameter in semi--classical theory is reinvestigated. We argue that the conclusive answer to the question of its measurability will not be possible until the more fundamental problem of nonuniqueness of gravity--induced fermion interaction i…
Fermions in (anti) de Sitter gravity theory in four dimensions are considered. Especially we propose new fermion actions to derive a Weyl or Majorana fermion action if we break the AdS (dS) group to the Lorentz group in curved spacetime.
We study the coupling of massive fermions to the quantum mechanical dynamics of spacetime emerging from the spinfoam approach in three dimensions. We first recall the classical theory before constructing a spinfoam model of quantum gravity coupled to spinors. The technique used is based on a finite expansion in inverse fermion masses leading to the computation of the vacuum to vacuum transition amplitude of the theory. The path integral is derived as a sum over closed fermionic loops wrapping around the spinfoam. The effects of quantum torsion are realised as a modification of the intertwining…
We analyse the Dirac equation for slow fermions coupled to linearised massive gravity above the Minkowski background and derive the effective low-energy gravitational potential. The obtained results can be used in terrestrial laboratories for the detection of gravitational waves and fluxes of massive gravitons emitted by cosmological objects. We also calculate the neutron spin precession within linearised massive gravity, which in principle can be measured by neutron interferometers.
Effects of space time geometry fluctuations on fermionic fields have recently been looked for in nuclear physics experiments, and were found to be much lower than predicted, at a phenomenological level, by loop quantum gravity. We show that possible corrections to the canonical structure in the semi classical regime may introduce important changes in the outcome of the theory, and may explain the observed mismatch with experiments.
Quantum gravity correction is truly important to study tunnelling process of black hole. Base on the generalized uncertainty principle, we investigate the influence of quantum gravity and the result tell us that the quantum gravity correction accelerates the evaporation of black hole. Using corrected Dirac equation in curved spacetime and Hamilton-Jacobi method, we address the tunnelling of fermions in a 4-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime. After solving the equation of motion of the spin 1/2 field, we obtain the corrected Hawking temperature. It turns out that the correction depends not onl…
In this short article we introduce the mathematical framework of the principle of the fermionic projector and set up a variational principle in discrete space-time. The underlying physical principles are discussed. We outline the connection to the continuum theory and state recent results. In the last two sections, we speculate on how it might be possible to describe quantum gravity within this framework.
I review recent work on nonperturbative path integral quantization of two-dimensional dilaton gravity coupled to Dirac fermions, employing the "Vienna school" approach.
We study the impact of quantum gravity on a system of chiral fermions that are charged under an Abelian gauge group. Under the impact of quantum gravity, a finite value of the gauge coupling could be generated and in turn drive four-fermion interactions to criticality. We find indications that the gravity-gauge-fermion interplay protects the lightness of fermions for a large enough number of fermions. On the other hand, for a smaller number of fermions, chiral symmetry may be broken, which would be in tension with the observation of light fermions.
Canonical gravity in real Ashtekar-Barbero variables is generalized to allow for fermionic matter. The resulting torsion changes several expressions in Holst's original vacuum analysis, which are summarized here. This in turn requires adaptations to the known loop quantization of gravity coupled to fermions, which is discussed on the basis of the classical analysis. As a result, parity invariance is not manifestly realized in loop quantum gravity.
The role of fermionic matter in the spectrum of the area operator is analyzed using the Baez--Krasnov framework for quantum fermions and gravity. The result is that the fermionic contribution to the area of a surface $S$ is equivalent to the contribution of purely gravitational spin network's edges tangent to $S$. Therefore, the spectrum of the area operator is the same as in the pure gravity case.
We study UV-finite theory of induced gravity. We use scalar fields, Dirac fields and vector fields as matter fields whose one-loop effects induce the gravitational action. To obtain the mass spectrum which satisfies the UV-finiteness condition, we use a graph-based construction of mass matrices. The existence of a self-consistent static solution for an Einstein universe is shown in the presence of degenerate fermion.
We demonstrate, in the context of Loop Quantum Gravity, the Quantum Holographic Principle, according to which the area of the boundary surface enclosing a region of space encodes a qubit per Planck unit. To this aim, we introduce fermion fields in the bulk, whose boundary surface is the two-dimensional sphere. The doubling of the fermionic degrees of freedom and the use of the Bogoljubov transformations lead to pairs of spin network's edges piercing the boundary surface with double punctures, giving rise to pixels of area encoding a qubit. The proof is also valid in the case of a fuzzy sphere.
We study the consistency of dynamical fermionic matter with the asymptotic safety scenario of quantum gravity using the functional renormalisation group. Since this scenario suggests strongly coupled quantum gravity in the UV, one expects gravity-induced fermion self-interactions at energies of the Planck-scale. These could lead to chiral symmetry breaking at very high energies and thus to large fermion masses in the IR. The present analysis which is based on the previous works \cite{Christiansen:2015rva, Meibohm:2015twa}, concludes that gravity-induced chiral symmetry breaking at the Planck s…
We study the quantum fermions+gravity system, that is, the gravitational counterpart of QED. We start from the standard Einstein-Weyl theory, reformulated in terms of Ashtekar variables; and we construct its non- perturbative quantum theory by extending the loop representation of general relativity. We construct the fermion equivalent to the loop variables. Not surprisingly, fermions can be incorporated in the loop representation simply by including open curves into ''Loop space''. We explicitely construct the diffeomorphism and hamiltonain operators. The first can be fully solved as in pure g…
The problem of nonuniqueness of minimal coupling procedure for Einstein--Cartan (EC) gravity with matter is investigated. It is shown that the predictions of the theory of gravity with fermionic matter can radically change if the freedom of addition of a divergence to the flat space matter Lagrangean density is exploited. The well--known gravity induced four--fermion interaction is shown to reveal unexpected features. The solution to the problem of nonuniqueness of minimal coupling of EC gravity is argued to be necessary in order for the theory to produce definite predictions. In particular, t…
The gravitational effects in the relativistic quantum mechanics are investigated in a relativistically derived version of Heaviside's speculative Gravity (in flat space-time) named here as Maxwellian Gravity. The standard Dirac's approach to the intrinsic spin in the fields of Maxwellian Gravity yields the gravitomagnetic moment of a Dirac (spin 1/2) particle exactly equals to its intrinsic spin. Violation of The Equivalence Principle (both at classical and quantum mechanical level) in the relativistic domain has also been reported in this work.
In this paper, we investigate the fermions Hawking radiation and quasinormal modes in infra-red modified Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity under tunneling and perturbation perspectives.Firstly, through the fermions tunneling in IR modified Ho$\check{r}$ava-Lifshitz gravity,we obtain the Hawking radiation emission rate, tunneling temperature and entropy for the Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole. It is found that the results of fermions tunneling are in consistence with the thermodynamics results obtained by calculating surface gravity.Secondly, we numerically calculate the lowing quasinormal modes fr…
Fermions coupled to Yang-Mills matrix models are studied from the point of view of emergent gravity. We show that the simple matrix model action provides an appropriate coupling for fermions to gravity, albeit with a non-standard spin connection. Integrating out the fermions in a nontrivial geometrical background induces indeed the Einstein-Hilbert action and a dilaton-like term, at least for on-shell geometries. This explains and precisely reproduces the UV/IR mixing for fermions in noncommutative gauge theory, extending recent results for scalar fields. It also explains why some UV/IR mixing…
In the model of a fermion field coupled to loop quantum gravity, we consider the Gauss and the Hamiltonian constraints. According to the explicit solutions to the Gauss constraint, the fermion spins and the gravitational spin networks intertwine with each other so that the fermion spins contribute to the volume of the spin network vertices. For the Hamiltonian constraint, the regularization and quantization procedures are presented in detail. By introducing an adapted vertex Hilbert space to remove the regulator, we propose a diffeomorphism covariant graph-changing Hamiltonian constraint opera…
In the article we investigate localization problem for spinor fields within the 5D standing wave braneworld with the bulk real scalar field and show that there exist normalizable fermion field zero modes on the brane.
By adopting a methodology proposed by R.J. Adler \etl, we study the interesting analogy between the fermion-gravity and the fermion-electromagnetic interactions in the presence of the minimal Lorentz-violating (LV) fermion coefficients. The one-fermion matrix elements of gravitational interaction (OMEGI) are obtained with a prescribed Lense-Thirring (LT) metric assuming test particle assumption. Quite distinct from the extensively studied linear gravitational potential, the LT metric is an essentially curved metric, and thus reveals the anomalous LV matter-gravity couplings as a manifestation …
We compute the lowest order gravitational UV divergent radiative corrections to the S matrix element of the $fermion + fermion\rightarrow fermion + fermion$ scattering process in the massive Yukawa theory, coupled either to Unimodular Gravity or to General Relativity. We show that both Unimodular Gravity and General Relativity give rise to the same UV divergent contribution in Dimensional Regularization. This is a nontrivial result, since in the classical action of Unimodular Gravity coupled to the Yukawa theory, the graviton field does not couple neither to the mass operator nor to the Yukawa…
We discover that chiral symmetry does not act as an infrared attractor of the renormalization group flow under the impact of quantum gravity fluctuations. Thus, observationally viable quantum gravity models must respect chiral symmetry. In our truncation, asymptotically safe gravity does, as a chiral fixed point exists. A second non-chiral fixed point with massive fermions provides a template for models with dark matter. This fixed point disappears for more than 10 fermions, suggesting that an asymptotically safe ultraviolet completion for the standard model plus gravity enforces chiral symmet…
Coupling fermions to gravity necessarily leads to a non-renormalizable, gravitational four-fermion contact interaction. In this essay, we argue that augmenting the Einstein-Cartan Lagrangian with suitable kinetic terms quadratic in the gravitational gauge field strengths (torsion and curvature) gives rise to new, massive propagating gravitational degrees of freedom. This is to be seen in close analogy to Fermi's effective four-fermion interaction and its emergent W and Z bosons.
Any theory of quantum gravity must ultimately be connected to observations. This demand is difficult to be met due to the high energies at which we expect the quantum nature of gravity to become manifest. Here we study, how viable quantum gravity proposals can be restricted by investigating the interplay of gravitational and matter degrees of freedom. Specifically we demand that a valid quantum theory of gravity must allow for the existence of light (compared to the Planck scale) fermions, since we observe these in our universe. Within the effective theory framework, we can thus show that UV c…
We define and study kinematical observables involving fermion spin, such as the total spin of a collection of particles, in loop quantum gravity. Due to the requirement of gauge invariance, the relevant quantum states contain strong entanglement between gravity and fermionic degrees of freedom. Interestingly we find that properties and spectra of the observables are nevertheless similar to their counterparts from quantum mechanics. However, there are also new effects. Due to the entanglement between gravity and fermionic degrees of freedom, alignment of quantum spins has consequences for quant…
In this paper, by presenting the potentials of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes in the corresponding Schrödinger equations, we investigate the localization and resonances of gravity and fermion on the symmetric and asymmetric Bloch {branes}. We find that the localization properties of zero modes for gravity and fermion in the symmetric brane case are the same, whereas, for the asymmetric brane case, the fermion zero mode is localized on one of the sub-branes, while the gravity zero mode is localized on another sub-brane. The spectra of the gravity and the left- or right-handed fermion are composed of a…
We zoom in on the microscopic dynamics for fermions and quantum gravity within the asymptotic-safety paradigm. A key finding of our study is the unavoidable presence of a nonminimal derivative coupling between the curvature and fermion fields in the ultraviolet. Its backreaction on the properties of the Reuter fixed point remains small for finite fermion numbers within a bounded range. This constitutes a nontrivial test of the asymptotic-safety scenario for gravity and fermionic matter, additionally supplemented by our studies of the momentum-dependent vertex flow which indicate the subleading…
Fermions constitute an important component of matter and their quantization in presence of dynamical gravity is essential for any theory of quantum gravity. We revisit the classical formulation adapted for a background free quantization. The analysis is carried out with the Hilbert-Palatini form for gravity together with the Nieh-Yan topological term which keeps the nature of Barbero-Immirzi parameter independent of inclusion of arbitrary matter with arbitrary couplings. With dynamical gravity, a priori, there are two distinct notions of `parity' - orientation reversing diffeomorphisms and imp…
An essential step towards the identification of a fermion mass generation mechanism at Planck scale is to analyse massive fermions in a given quantum gravity framework. In this letter the two mass terms entering the Hamiltonian constraint for the Einstein-Majorana system are studied in the loop representation of quantum gravity and fermions. One resembles a bare mass gap because it is not zero for states with zero (fermion) kinetic energy as opposite to the other that is interpreted as `dressing' the mass. The former contribution originates from (at least) triple intersections of the loop stat…
We investigate some cosmological models arising from a non-minimal coupling of a fermionic field to gravity in the geometrical setting of Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble gravity. The role played by the non-minimal coupling together with torsion in facing problems such as cosmological singularity, inflation and dark energy is discussed.

In this paper, we study thermodynamical contributions to the theory of gravity under the $q$-deformed boson and fermion gas models. According to the Verlinde's proposal, the law of gravity is not based on a fundamental interaction but it emerges as an entropic force from the changes of entropy associated with the information on the holographic screen. In addition, Strominger shows that the extremal quantum black holes obey neither boson nor fermion statistics, but they obey deformed statistic. Using these notions, we find $q$-deformed entropy and temperature functions. We also present the cont…
Path integral quantization of generic two-dimensional dilaton gravity non-minimally coupled to a Dirac fermion is performed. After integrating out geometry exactly, perturbation theory is employed in the matter sector to derive the lowest order gravitational vertices. Consistency with the case of scalar matter is found and issues of relevance for bosonisation are pointed out.
In this short review, we explain how and in which sense the causal action principle for causal fermion systems gives rise to classical gravity and the Einstein equations. Moreover, methods are presented for going beyond classical gravity, with applications to a positive mass theorem for static causal fermion systems, a connection between area change and matter flux and the construction of a quantum state.
We present a metric-independent, diffeomorphism-invariant model with interacting fermions that contains a massless composite graviton in its spectrum. The model is motivated by the supersymmetric D-brane action, modulated by a fermion potential. The gravitational coupling is related to new physics at the cutoff scale that regularizes UV divergences. We also speculate on possible extensions of the model.
We derive the dynamics of the gravitational collapse of a homogeneous and spherically symmetric cloud in a classical set-up endowed with a topological sector of gravity and a non-minimal coupling to fermions. The effective theory consists of the Einstein-Hilbert action plus Dirac fermions interacting through a four-fermion vertex. At the classical level, we obtain the same picture that has been recently studied by some of us within a wide range of effective theories inspired by a super-renormalizable and asymptotically free theory of gravity. The classical singularity is replaced by a bounce, …
We study the impact of quantum gravity, formulated as a quantum field theory of the metric, on chiral symmetry in a fermionic matter sector. We specifically address the question as to whether metric fluctuations can induce chiral symmetry breaking and bound state formation. Our results based on the functional Renormalization Group indicate that chiral symmetry is left intact even at strong gravitational coupling. In particular, we find that asymptotically safe quantum gravity where the gravitational couplings approach a non-Gaussian fixed point generically admits universes with light fermions.…
We investigate superfluidity of the relativistic fermi-gas with gravitational interaction. The excitation spectrum is obtained within the linearized theory. While superfluidity may take place at a definite ratio of the Fermi momentum, rest mass and coupling constant, the metric coefficients play predominant role forming the gap of excitation spectrum.
We show how Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory appears naturally in the Ashtekar formulation of relativity if one postulates the existence of a fermionic field playing the role of aether. The spatial currents associated with this field must be switched off for the equivalence to work. Therefore the field supplies the preferred frame associated with breaking refoliation (time diffeomorphism) invariance, but obviously the symmetry is only spontaneously broken if the field is dynamic. When Dirac fermions couple to the gravitational field via the Ashtekar variables, the low energy limit of HL gravity, re…
Descriptions of highly relativistic fermions in a gravitational field in the classical (nonquantum) and quantum approaches are discussed. The results following from the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations for a fast spinning particle in Schwarzschild's and Kerr's background are considered. Numerical estimates for electron, proton and neutrino in the gravitational field of black holes are presented. The general relativistic Dirac equation is analyzed from the point of view it is using for the adequate description of highly relativistic fermions in a gravitational field, in the linear and nonlinear sp…
