The Gaussian correlation inequality for multivariate zero-mean normal probabilities of symmetrical n-rectangles can be considered as an inequality for multivariate gamma distributions (in the sense of Krishnamoorthy and Parthasarathy [5]) with one degree of freedom. Its generalization to all integer degrees of freedom and sufficiently large non-integer "degrees of freedom" was recently proved in [10]. Here, this inequality is partly extended to smaller non-integer degrees of freedom and in particular - in a weaker form - to all infinitely divisible multivariate gamma distributions. A further monotonicity property - sometimes called "more PLOD (positively lower orthant dependent)" - for increasing correlations is proved for multivariate gamma distributions with integer or sufficiently large degrees of freedom.
Let $\mathbf{W}=(W_1,W_2,...,W_k)$ be a random vector with nonnegative coordinates having nonzero and finite variances. We prove concentration inequalities for $\mathbf{W}$ using size biased couplings that generalize the previous univariate results. Two applications on local dependence and counting patterns are provided.
We consider the stochastic integrals of multivariate point processes and study their concentration phenomena. In particular, we obtain a Bernstein type of concentration inequality through Doléans-Dade exponential formula and a uniform exponential inequality using a generic chaining argument. As applications, we obtain a upper bound for a sequence of discrete time martingales indexed by a class of functionals, and so derive the rate of convergence for nonparametric maximum likelihood estimators, which is an improvement of earlier work of van de Geer.
Given a vector $F=(F_1,\dots,F_m)$ of Poisson functionals $F_1,\dots,F_m$, we investigate the proximity between $F$ and an $m$-dimensional centered Gaussian random vector $N_Σ$ with covariance matrix $Σ\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times m}$. Apart from finding proximity bounds for the $d_2$- and $d_3$-distances, based on classes of smooth test functions, we obtain proximity bounds for the $d_{convex}$-distance, based on the less tractable test functions comprised of indicators of convex sets. The bounds for all three distances are shown to be of the same order, which is presumably optimal. The bounds are …
The p-variate gamma distribution in the sense of Krishnamoorthy and Parthasarathy exists for all positive integer degrees of freedom d and at least for all real values d > p-2, p > 1. For special structures of the "associated" covariance matrix it also exists for all positive d. In this paper a relation between central and non-central multivariate gamma distributions is shown, which implies the existence of the p-variate gamma distribution at least for all non-integer d greater than the integer part of (p-1)/2 without any additional assumptions for the associated covariance matrix.
Weighted Poincaré-type and related inequalities provide upper bounds of the variance of functions. Their application in sensitivity analysis allows for quickly identifying the active inputs. Although the efficiency in prioritizing inputs depends on the upper bounds, the latter can be big, and therefore useless in practice. In this paper, an optimal weighted Poincaré-type inequality and gradient-based expression of the variance (integral equality) are studied for a wide class of probability measures. For a function $f : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}^n$, we show that $${\rm Var}_μ(f) = \int_{Ω\times…
Subordinating a multivariate Lévy process, the subordinate, with a univariate subordinator gives rise to a pathwise construction of a new Lévy process, provided the subordinator and the subordinate are independent processes. The variance-gamma model in finance was generated accordingly from a Brownian motion and a gamma process. Alternatively, multivariate subordination can be used to create Lévy processes, but this requires the subordinate to have independent components. In this paper, we show that there exists another operation acting on pairs $(T,X)$ of Lévy processes which creates a Lévy p…
In this paper, we consider the nonparametric estimation of the multivariate probability density function and its partial derivative with a support on $[0,\infty)$. To this end we use the class of kernel estimators with asymmetric gamma kernel functions. The gamma kernels are nonnegative. They change their shape depending on the position on the semi-axis and are robust to the boundary bias problem. We investigate the mean integrated squared error (MISE) assuming dependent data with strong mixing and find the optimal bandwidth of the kernel as a minimum of the MISE. We derive the bias, the varia…
An extension of the Gaussian correlation conjecture (GCC) is proved for multivariate gamma distributions (in the sense of Krishnamoorthy and Parthasarathy). The classical GCC for Gaussian probability measures is obtained by the special case with one degree of freedom.
Weak variance generalised gamma convolution processes are multivariate Brownian motions weakly subordinated by multivariate Thorin subordinators. Within this class, we extend a result from strong to weak subordination that a driftless Brownian motion gives rise to a self-decomposable process. Under moment conditions on the underlying Thorin measure, we show that this condition is also necessary. We apply our results to some prominent processes such as the weak variance alpha-gamma process, and illustrate the necessity of our moment conditions in some cases.
Let $\MM$ be the space of finite measures on a Locally compact Polish space, and let $\BG$ be the Gamma distribution on $\MM$ with intensity measure $ν\in \MM$. Let $\nn^{ext}$ be the extrinsic derivative with tangent bundle $T\MM= \cup_{η\in\MM} L^2(η)$, and let $\GA: T\MM\to T\MM$ be measurable such that $\GA_η$ is a positive definite linear operator on $L^2(η)$ for every $η\in \MM$. Moreover, for a measurable function $V$ on $\MM$, let $\d\BG^V= \e^V\d\BG$. We investigate the Poincaré, weak Poincaré and super Poincaré inequalities for the Dirichlet form $$\EE_{\GA,V}(F,G):= \int_\MM \<\GA_η…
We unify and extend a number of approaches related to constructing multivariate Variance-Gamma (V.G.) models for option pricing. An overarching model is derived by subordinating multivariate Brownian motion to a subordinator from the Thorin (1977) class of generalised Gamma convolution subordinators. A class of models due to Grigelionis (2007), which contains the well-known Madan-Seneta V.G. model, is of this type, but our multivariate generalization is considerably wider, allowing in particular for processes with infinite variation and a variety of dependencies between the underlying processe…
The Gaussian product inequality is an important conjecture concerning the moments of Gaussian random vectors. While all attempts to prove the Gaussian product inequality in full generality have been unsuccessful to date, numerous partial results have been derived in recent decades and we provide here further results on the problem. Most importantly, we establish a strong version of the Gaussian product inequality for multivariate gamma distributions in the case of nonnegative correlations, thereby extending a result recently derived by Genest and Ouimet [5]. Further, we show that the Gaussian …
Classes of multivariate and cone valued infinitely divisible Gamma distributions are introduced. Particular emphasis is put on the cone-valued case, due to the relevance of infinitely divisible distributions on the positive semi-definite matrices in applications. The cone-valued class of generalised Gamma convolutions is studied. In particular, a characterisation in terms of an Itô-Wiener integral with respect to an infinitely divisible random measure associated to the jumps of a Lévy process is established. A new example of an infinitely divisible positive definite Gamma random matrix is intr…
There has been a renewed interest in exponential concentration inequalities for stochastic processes in probability and statistics over the last three decades. De la Peña \cite{d} establishes a nice exponential inequality for discrete time locally square integrable martingale . In this paper, we obtain de la Peña's inequalities for stochastic integral of multivariate point processes. The proof is primarily based on Doléans-Dade exponential formula and the optional stopping theorem. As application, we obtain an exponential inequality for block counting process in $Λ-$coalescents.
Gaussian comparison inequalities provide a way of bounding probabilities relating to multivariate Gaussian random vectors in terms of probabilities of random variables with simpler correlation structures. In this paper, we establish the partial stochastic dominance result that the cumulative distribution function of the maximum of a multivariate normal random vector, with positive intraclass correlation coefficient, intersects the cumulative distribution function of a standard normal random variable at most once. This result can be applied to the Bayesian design of a clinical trial in which se…
We explore the applications of our previously established likelihood-ratio method for deriving concentration inequalities for a wide variety of univariate and multivariate distributions. New concentration inequalities for various distributions are developed without the idea of minimizing moment generating functions.
Generalized gamma distributions arise as limits in many settings involving random graphs, walks, trees, and branching processes. Peköz, Röllin, and Ross (2016, arXiv:1309.4183 [math.PR]) exploited characterizing distributional fixed point equations to obtain uniform error bounds for generalized gamma approximations using Stein's method. Here we show how monotone couplings arising with these fixed point equations can be used to obtain sharper tail bounds that, in many cases, outperform competing moment-based bounds and the uniform bounds obtainable with Stein's method. Applications are given to…
This paper provides bifactor gamma distribution, trivariate gamma distribution and two copula families on [0, 1] n obtained from the Laplace transforms of the multivariate gamma distribution and the multi-factor gamma distribution given by [P ($θ$)] --$λ$ and [P ($θ$)] --$λ$ n i=1 (1 + pi$θ$i) --($λ$ i --$λ$) respectively, where P is an affine polynomial with respect to the n variables $θ$1,. .. , $θ$n. These copulas are new generalized Farlie-Gumbel-Morgenstern copulas and allow in particular to obtain multivariate gamma distributions for which the cumulative distribution functions and the pr…
Multivariate versions of classical orthogonal polynomials such as Jacobi, Hahn, Laguerre and Meixner are reviewed and their connection explored by adopting a probabilistic approach. Hahn and Meixner polynomials are interpreted as posterior mixtures of Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials, respectively. By using known properties of gamma point processes and related transformations, a new infinite-dimensional version of Jacobi polynomials is constructed with respect to the size-biased version of the Poisson--Dirichlet weight measure and to the law of the gamma point process from which it is derived.
The paper develops a rather unexpected parallel to the multivariate Matsumoto--Yor (MY) property on trees considered in \cite{MW04}. The parallel concerns a multivariate version of the Kummer distribution, which is generated by a tree. Given a tree of size $p$, we direct it by choosing a vertex, say $r$, as a root. With such a directed tree we associate a map $Φ_r$. For a random vector ${\bf S}$ having a $p$-variate tree-Kummer distribution and any root $r$, we prove that $Φ_r({\bf S})$ has independent components. Moreover, we show that if ${\bf S}$ is a random vector in $(0,\infty)^p$ and for…
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method to derive bounds for the Variance-Gamma approximation of functionals of isonormal Gaussian processes, in particular of random variables living inside a fixed Wiener chaos induced by such a process. The bounds are presented in terms of Malliavin operators and norms of contractions. We show that a sequence of distributions of random variables in the second Wiener chaos converges to a Variance-Gamma distribution if and only if their moments of order two to six converge to that of a Variance-Gamma distributed random variable (six moment theorem). M…
We employ stabilization methods and second order Poincaré inequalities to establish rates of multivariate normal convergence for a large class of vectors $(H_s^{(1)},...,H_s^{(m)})$, $s \geq 1$, of statistics of marked Poisson processes on $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \geq 2$, as the intensity parameter $s$ tends to infinity. Our results are applicable whenever the constituent functionals $H_s^{(i)}$, $i\in\{1,...,m\}$, are expressible as sums of exponentially stabilizing score functions satisfying a moment condition. The rates are for the $d_2$-, $d_3$-, and $d_{convex}$-distances. When we compare with…
In a recent paper, Gaunt 2020 extended Stein's method to limit distributions that can be represented as a function $g:\mathbb{R}^d\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ of a centered multivariate normal random vector $Σ^{1/2}\mathbf{Z}$ with $\mathbf{Z}$ a standard $d$-dimensional multivariate normal random vector and $Σ$ a non-negative definite covariance matrix. In this paper, we obtain improved bounds, in the sense of weaker moment conditions, smaller constants and simpler forms, for the case that $g$ has derivatives with polynomial growth. We obtain new non-uniform bounds for the derivatives of the soluti…
In this paper we study the problem of adaptive estimation of a multivariate function satisfying some structural assumption. We propose a novel estimation procedure that adapts simultaneously to unknown structure and smoothness of the underlying function. The problem of structural adaptation is stated as the problem of selection from a given collection of estimators. We develop a general selection rule and establish for it global oracle inequalities under arbitrary $\rL_p$--losses. These results are applied for adaptive estimation in the additive multi--index model.
In the paper, the authors introduce a matrix-parametrized generalization of the multinomial probability mass function that involves a ratio of several multivariate gamma functions. They show the logarithmic complete monotonicity of this generalization and derive new inequalities involving ratios of multivariate gamma functions.
This note contains sufficient conditions for the probability density function of an arbitrary continuous univariate distribution, supported on $(0,\infty),$ such that the corresponding Mills ratio to be reciprocally convex (concave). To illustrate the applications of the main results, the reciprocal convexity (concavity) of Mills ratio of the gamma distribution is discussed in details.
