An automorphism on a graph $G$ is a bijective mapping on the vertex set $V(G)$, which preserves the relation of adjacency between any two vertices of $G$. An automorphism $g$ fixes a vertex $v$ if $g$ maps $v$ onto itself. The stabilizer of a set $S$ of vertices is the set of all automorphisms that fix vertices of $S$. A set $F$ is called fixing set of $G$, if its stabilizer is trivial. The fixing number of a graph is the cardinality of a smallest fixing set. The fixed number of a graph $G$ is the minimum $k$, such that every $k$-set of vertices of $G$ is a fixing set of $G$. A graph $G$ is called a $k$-fixed graph if its fixing number and fixed number are both $k$. In this paper, we study the fixed number of a graph and give construction of a graph of higher fixed number from graph with lower fixed number. We find bound on $k$ in terms of diameter $d$ of a distance-transitive $k$-fixed graph.
We give a simple proof that every $n$-vertex graph $d$-regular graph that does not contain a fixed bipartite graph as a subgraph has an induced matching of size $Ω((n/d)(\log d))$.
We give a survey on graphs with fixed smallest eigenvalue, especially on graphs with large minimal valency and also on graphs with good structures. Our survey mainly consists of the following two parts: (i) Hoffman graphs, the basic theory related to Hoffman graphs and the applications of Hoffman graphs to graphs with fixed smallest eigenvalue and large minimal valency; (ii) recent results on distance-regular graphs and co-edge regular graphs with fixed smallest eigenvalue and the characterizations of certain families of distance-regular graphs. At the end of the survey, we also discuss signed…
Bicyclic graph is a connected graph in which the number of edges equals the number of vertices plus one. In this paper, we determine the graph which alone maximizes the spectral radii among all the bicyclic graphs on $n$ vertices with fixed independence number.
In this paper, we determine the maximal Laplacian and signless Laplacian spectral radii for graphs with fixed number of vertices and domination number, and characterize the extremal graphs respectively.
Consider a family of graphs having a fixed girth and a large size. We give an optimal lower asymptotic bound on the number of even cycles of any constant length, as the order of the graphs tends to infinity.
In this paper we consider the following problem: Over the class of all simple connected graphs of order $n$ with $k$ pendant vertices ($n,k$ being fixed), which graph maximizes (respectively, minimizes) the algebraic connectivity? We also discuss the algebraic connectivity of unicyclic graphs.
We prove that graphs excluding a fixed immersion have bounded nonrepetitive chromatic number. More generally, we prove that if $H$ is a fixed planar graph that has a planar embedding with all the vertices with degree at least 4 on a single face, then graphs excluding $H$ as a topological minor have bounded nonrepetitive chromatic number. This is the largest class of graphs known to have bounded nonrepetitive chromatic number.
The Sombor index is a topological index in graph theory defined by Gutman in 2021. In this article we find the maximum Sombor index of unicyclic graphs with a fixed number of pendant vertices. We also provide the unique graph among the chosen class where the maximum Sombor index is attained.
The Kirchhoff index of a connected graph is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in the graph. Its considerable applications are found in a variety of fields. In this paper, we determine the maximum value of Kirchhoff index among the unicyclic graphs with fixed number of vertices and maximum degree, and characterize the corresponding extremal graph.
In the paper we state and prove theorem describing the upper bound on number of the graphs that have fixed number of vertices |V| and can be colored with the fixed number of n colors. The bound relates both numbers using power of 2, while the exponent is the difference between |V| and n. We also state three conjectures on the number of graphs that have fixed number of vertices |V| and chromatic number n.
For every fixed graph $H$ and every fixed $0 < α< 1$, we show that if a graph $G$ has the property that all subsets of size $αn$ contain the ``correct'' number of copies of $H$ one would expect to find in the random graph $G(n,p)$ then $G$ behaves like the random graph $G(n,p)$; that is, it is $p$-quasi-random in the sense of Chung, Graham, and Wilson. This solves a conjecture raised by Shapira and solves in a strong sense an open problem of Simonovits and Sós.
In this paper we consider the following problem: Over the class of all simple connected unicyclic graphs on $n$ vertices with girth $g$ ($n,g$ being fixed), which graph minimizes the Laplacian spectral radius? We prove that the graph $U_{n,g}$ (defined in Section 1) uniquely minimizes the Laplacian spectral radius for $n\geq 2g-1$ when $g$ is even and for $n\geq 3g-1$ when $g$ is odd.
We obtain the maximum sum-connectivity indices of graphs in the set of trees and in the set of unicyclic graphs respectively with given number of vertices and maximum degree, and determine the corresponding extremal graphs. Additionally, we deduce the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the first two maximum sum-connectivity indices for $n\ge 4$.

We consider graphs with vertices of degree 1 or 2 and prove that the numbers of components of sizes 2 to q have a limit normal distribution for any q > 1. The result is also extended to multigraphs.
We consider the number of spanning trees in circulant graphs of $βn$ vertices with generators depending linearly on $n$. The matrix tree theorem gives a closed formula of $βn$ factors, while we derive a formula of $β-1$ factors. Using the same trick, we also derive a formula for the number of spanning trees in discrete tori. Moreover, the spanning tree entropy of circulant graphs with fixed and non-fixed generators is compared.
The Wiener index of a connected graph is defined as the sum of the distances between all unordered pair of its vertices. In this paper, we characterize the graphs which extremize the Wiener index among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $k$ pendant vertices. We also characterize the graph which minimizes the Wiener index over the graphs on $n$ vertices with $s$ cut vertices.
The $α$-spectral radius of a connected graph $G$ is the spectral radius of $A_α$-matrix of $G$. In this paper, we discuss the methods for comparing $α$-spectral radius of graphs. As applications, we characterize the graphs with the maximal $α$-spectral radius among all unicyclic and bicyclic graphs of order $n$ with diameter $d$, respectively. Finally, we determine the unique graph with maximal signless Laplacian spectral radius among bicyclic graphs of order $n$ with diameter $d$.
Given a fixed graph $H$ and a positive integer $n$, a Picker-Chooser $H$-game is a biased game played on the edge set of $K_n$ in which Picker is trying to force many copies of $H$ and Chooser is trying to prevent him from doing so. In this paper we conjecture that the value of the game is roughly the same as the expected number of copies of $H$ in the random graph $G(n,p)$ and prove our conjecture for special cases of $H$ such as complete graphs and trees.
We develop a new method for enumerating independent sets of a fixed size in general graphs, and we use this method to show that a conjecture of Engbers and Galvin holds for all but finitely many graphs. We also use our method to prove special cases of a conjecture of Kahn. In addition, we show that our method is particularly useful for computing the number of independent sets of small sizes in general regular graphs and Moore graphs, and we argue that it can be used in many other cases when dealing with graphs that have numerous structural restrictions.
We investigate the number of 4-edge paths in graphs with a fixed number of vertices and edges. An asymptotically sharp upper bound is given to this quantity. The extremal construction is the quasi-star or the quasi-clique graph, depending on the edge density. An easy lower bound is also proved. This answer resembles the classic theorem of Ahlswede and Katona about the maximal number of 2-edge paths, and a recent theorem of Kenyon, Radin, Ren and Sadun about k-edge stars.
In this paper, we show that for given positive integer C, there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs with valency k at least three, diameter D at least six and k2/k<=C. This extends a conjecture of Bannai and Ito.
We use an entropy based method to study two graph maximization problems. We upper bound the number of matchings of fixed size $\ell$ in a $d$-regular graph on $N$ vertices. For $\frac{2\ell}{N}$ bounded away from 0 and 1, the logarithm of the bound we obtain agrees in its leading term with the logarithm of the number of matchings of size $\ell$ in the graph consisting of $\frac{N}{2d}$ disjoint copies of the complete bipartite graph $K_{d,d}$. This provides asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of S. Friedland {\it et al.}. We also obtain an analogous result for independent sets of a fixed size…
For a fixed graph $F$, a graph $G$ is said to be $F$-saturated if $G$ does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $F$ but does contain $F$ after the addition of any new edge. Let $M_k$ be a matching consisting of $k$ edges and $S_{n,k}$ be the join graph of a complete graph $K_k$ and an empty graph $\overline{K_{n-k}}$. In this paper, we prove that for $s \geq3$ and $k\geq 2$, $S_{n,s-2}$ contains the minimum number of $M_k$ among all $n$-vertex $K_s$-saturated graphs for sufficiently large $n$, and when $k \leq s-2$, it is the unique extremal graph. In addition, we also show that $S_{n,1}$ is t…
In 1991, Bollobás and Frieze showed that the threshold for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a spanning maximal planar subgraph is very close to $p = n^{-1/3}$. In this paper, we compute similar threshold ranges for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal bipartite planar subgraph and for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal planar subgraph of fixed girth $g$.
For a fixed graph G, a maximal independent set is an independent set that is not a proper subset of any other independent set. P. Erdös, and independently, J. W. Moon and L. Moser, and R. E. Miller and D. E. Muller, determined the maximum number of maximal independent sets in a graph on n vertices, as well as the extremal graphs. In this paper we maximize the number of maximal independent sets of a fixed size for all graphs of order n and determine the extremal graphs. Our result generalizes the classical result.
Let $v(k, λ)$ be the maximum number of vertices of a connected $k$-regular graph with second largest eigenvalue at most $λ$. The Alon-Boppana Theorem implies that $v(k, λ)$ is finite when $k > \frac{λ^2 + 4}{4}$. In this paper, we show that for fixed $λ\geq1$, there exists a constant $C(λ)$ such that $2k+2 \leq v(k, λ) \leq 2k + C(λ)$ when $k > \frac{λ^2 + 4}{4}$.
We present an easy structure theorem for graphs which do not admit an immersion of the complete graph. The theorem motivates the definition of a variation of tree decompositions based on edge cuts instead of vertex cuts which we call tree-cut decompositions. We give a definition for the width of tree-cut decompositions, and using this definition along with the structure theorem for excluded clique immersions, we prove that every graph either has bounded tree-cut width or admits an immersion of a large wall.
Let $λ\geq2$ be an integer. For strongly regular graphs with parameters $(v, k, a,c)$ and smallest eigenvalue $-λ$, Neumaier gave two bounds on $c$ by using algebraic property of strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we will study a new class of regular graphs called sesqui-regular graphs, which contains strongly regular graphs as a subclass, and prove that for a sesqui-regular graph with parameters $(v,k,c)$ and smallest eigenvalue at least $-λ$, if $k$ is very large, then either $c \leq λ^2(λ-1)$ or $v-k-1 \leq \frac{(λ-1)^2}{4} + 1$ holds.
A graph $G$ is $H$-covered by some given graph $H$ if each vertex in $G$ is contained in a copy of $H$. In this note, we give the maximum number of independent sets of size $t\ge 3$ in $K_n$-covered graphs of size $N\ge n+t-1$ and determine its extremal graph. The result answers a question proposed by Chakraborit and Loh. The proof uses an edge-switching operation of hypergraphs which remains the number of independent sets nondecreasing.
A graph $G$ contains $H$ as an \emph{immersion} if there is an injective mapping $ϕ: V(H)\rightarrow V(G)$ such that for each edge $uv\in E(H)$, there is a path $P_{uv}$ in $G$ joining vertices $ϕ(u)$ and $ϕ(v)$, and all the paths $P_{uv}$, $uv\in E(H)$, are pairwise edge-disjoint. An analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture for the clique immersions by Lescure and Meyniel, and independently by Abu-Khzam and Langston, states that every graph $G$ contains $K_{χ(G)}$ as an immersion. We prove that for any constant $\varepsilon>0$ and integers $s,t\ge2$, there exists $d_0=d_0(\varepsilon,s,t)$ such that…
For graphs G and H, let the induced Ramsey number IR(H,G) be the smallest number of vertices in a graph F such that any coloring of the edges of F in red and blue, there is either a red induced copy of H or a blue induced copy of G. In this note we consider the case when G=Sn is a star on n edges, for large n, and H is a fixed graph. We prove that (r-1)n < IR(H, Sn) < (r-1)(r-1)n + cn, for any c>0, sufficiently large n, and r denoting the chromatic number of H. The lower bound is asymptotically tight for any fixed bipartite H. The upper bound is attained up to a constant factor, for example by…
A finite non-increasing sequence of positive integers $d = (d_1\geq \cdots\geq d_n)$ is called a degree sequence if there is a graph $G = (V,E)$ with $V = \{v_1,\ldots,v_n\}$ and $deg(v_i)=d_i$ for $i=1,\ldots,n$. In that case we say that the graph $G$ realizes the degree sequence $d$. We show that the exact number of labeled graphs that realize a fixed degree sequence satisfies a simple recurrence relation. Using this relation, we then obtain a recursive algorithm for the exact count. We also show that in the case of regular graphs the complexity of our algorithm is better than the complexity…
A fundamental problem of extremal graph theory is to ask, 'What is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices?' Recently Alon and Shikhelman proposed a more general, subgraph counting, version of this question. They considered the question of determining the maximum number of copies of a fixed graph $T$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. In this more general context, where we are no longer counting edges, it is also natural to ask what is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $F$-free graph with $m$ edges and no restriction on the number of vertices. Frohmader, in …
We prove that for every integer $k$, there exists $\varepsilon > 0$ such that for every n-vertex graph $G$ with no pivot-minor isomorphic to $C_k$, there exist disjoint sets $A,B \subseteq V(G)$ such that $|A|,|B| \geq \varepsilon n$, and $A$ is either complete or anticomplete to $B$. This proves the analog of the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for the class of graphs with no pivot-minor isomorphic to $C_k$.
The connective eccentricity index (CEI) of a graph $G$ is defined as $ξ^{ce}(G)=\sum_{v \in V(G)}\frac{d_G(v)}{\varepsilon_G(v)}$, where $d_G(v)$ is the degree of $v$ and $\varepsilon_G(v)$ is the eccentricity of $v$. In this paper, we characterize the unique graphs with maximum CEI from three classes of graphs: the $n$-vertex graphs with fixed connectivity and diameter, the $n$-vertex graphs with fixed connectivity and independence number, and the $n$-vertex graphs with fixed connectivity and minimum degree.
Let $G$ be a group and let $S$ be an inverse-closed and identity-free generating set of $G$. The \emph{Cayley graph} $\Cay(G,S)$ has vertex-set $G$ and two vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent if and only if $uv^{-1}\in S$. Let $CAY_d(n)$ be the number of isomorphism classes of $d$-valent Cayley graphs of order at most $n$. We show that $\log(CAY_d(n))\inΘ(d(\log n)^2)$, as $n\to\infty$. We also obtain some stronger results in the case $d=3$.
The general sum-connectivity index of a graph $G$ is defined as $χ_α(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)} {(d(u)+d(v))^α}$, where $d(v)$ denotes the degree of the vertex $v$ in $G$ and $α$ is a real number. In this paper it is deduced the maximum value for the general sum-connectivity index of $n$-vertex trees for $-1.7036\leq α<0$ and of $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs for $-1\le α<0$ respectively, with fixed maximum degree $\triangle $. The corresponding extremal graphs, as well as the $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the second maximum general sum-connectivity index for $n\ge 4$ are characterized. This …
We systematically study a natural problem in extremal graph theory, to minimize the number of edges in a graph with a fixed number of vertices, subject to a certain local condition: each vertex must be in a copy of a fixed graph $H$. We completely solve this problem when $H$ is a clique, as well as more generally when $H$ is any regular graph with degree at least about half its number of vertices. We also characterize the extremal graphs when $H$ is an Erdős-Rényi random graph. The extremal structures turn out to have the similar form as the conjectured extremal structures for a well-studied b…
We obtain results on the limiting distribution of the six-length of a random functional graph, also called a functional digraph or random mapping, with given in-degree sequence. The six-length of a vertex $v\in V$ is defined from the associated mapping, $f:V\to V$, to be the maximum $i\in V$ such that the elements $v, f(v), \ldots, f^{i-1}(v)$ are all distinct. This has relevance to the study of algorithms for integer factorisation.
Let $q(G)$ denote the $Q$-index of a graph $G$, which is the largest signless Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$. We prove best possible upper bounds of $q(G)$ and best possible lower bounds of $q(\overline{G})$ for a connected graph $G$ to be $k$-connected and maximally connected, respectively. Similar upper bounds of $q(G)$ and lower bounds of $q(\overline{G})$ to assure $G$ to be super-connected are also obtained. Upper bounds of $q(G)$ and lower bounds of $q(\overline{G})$ to assure a connected triangle-free graph $G$ to be $k$-connected, maximally connected and super-connected are also respectiv…
We revisit the classical question of the relationship between the diameter of a graph and its expansion properties. One direction is well understood: expander graphs exhibit essentially the lowest possible diameter. We focus on the reverse direction, showing that "sufficiently large" graphs of fixed diameter and degree must be "good" expanders. We prove this statement for various definitions of "sufficiently large" (multiplicative/additive factor from the largest possible size), for different forms of expansion (edge, vertex, and spectral expansion), and for both directed and undirected graphs…
We study the component structure of the random graph $G=G_{n,m,d}$. Here $d=O(1)$ and $G$ is sampled uniformly from ${\mathcal G}_{n,m,d}$, the set of graphs with vertex set $[n]$, $m$ edges and maximum degree at most $d$. If $m=μn/2$ then we establish a threshold value $μ_\star$ such that if $μ<μ_\star$ then w.h.p. the maximum component size is $O(\log n)$. If $μ>μ_\star$ then w.h.p. there is a unique giant component of order $n$ and the remaining components have size $O( \log n)$.
The main topic considered is maximizing the number of cycles in a graph with given number of edges. In 2009, Király conjectured that there is constant $c$ such that any graph with $m$ edges has at most $(1.4)^m$ cycles. In this paper, it is shown that for sufficiently large $m$, a graph with $m$ edges has at most $(1.443)^m$ cycles. For sufficiently large $m$, examples of a graph with $m$ edges and $(1.37)^m$ cycles are presented. For a graph with given number of vertices and edges an upper bound on the maximal number of cycles is given. Also, exponentially tight bounds are proved for the maxi…
In this paper, we proceed on determining the minimum $q_{min}$ among the connected nonbipartite graphs on $n\geq 5$ vertices and with domination number $\frac{n+1}{3}<γ\leq \frac{n-1}{2}$. Further results obtained are as follows: $\mathrm{(i)}$ among all nonbipartite connected graph of order $n\geq 5$ and with domination number $\frac{n-1}{2}$, the minimum $q_{min}$ is completely determined; $\mathrm{(ii)}$ among all nonbipartite graphs of order $n\geq 5$, with odd-girth $g_{o}\leq5$ and domination number at least $\frac{n+1}{3}<γ\leq \frac{n-2}{2}$, the minimum $q_{min}$ is completely determi…
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-coloring of $G$ is a map from the vertices of $G$ to the vertices of $H$ that preserves edge adjacency. We consider the following extremal enumerative question: for a given $H$, which connected $n$-vertex graph with minimum degree $δ$ maximizes the number of $H$-colorings? We show that for non-regular $H$ and sufficiently large $n$, the complete bipartite graph $K_{δ,n-δ}$ is the unique maximizer. As a corollary, for non-regular $H$ and sufficiently large $n$ the graph $K_{k,n-k}$ is the unique $k$-connected graph that maximizes the number of $H$-colorings among …
