We present a method of constraining the properties of the $γ$-ray emitting region in flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in the one-zone proton synchrotron model, where the $γ$-rays are produced by synchrotron radiation of relativistic protons. We show that for low enough values of the Doppler factor $δ$, the emission from the electromagnetic (EM) cascade which is initiated by the internal absorption of high-energy photons from photohadronic interactions may exceed the observed $\sim$GeV flux. We use that effect to derive an absolute lower limit of $δ$; first, an analytical one, in the asymptotic limit where the external radiation from the broad line region (BLR) is negligible, and then a numerical one in the more general case that includes BLR radiation. As its energy density in the emission region depends on $δ$ and the region's distance from the galactic center, we use the EM cascade to determine a minimum distance for each value of $δ$. We complement the EM cascade constraint with one derived from variability arguments and apply our method to the FSRQ 3C 273. We find that $δ\gtrsim 18-20$ for $B \lesssim 30$ G and $\sim$day timescale variability; the emission region is located outside the BLR, namely at $r \gtrsim 10 R_{\rm BLR} \sim 3$ pc; the model requires at pc-scale distances stronger magnetic fields than those inferred from core shift observations; while the jet power exceeds by at least one order of magnitude the accretion power. In short, our results disfavour the proton synchrotron model for the FSRQ 3C 273.

We present the results of a study of the time-averaged spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of eight flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) present in the second catalog of high energy sources detected beyond 50 GeV by the {\it Fermi}-Large Area Telescope (2FHL). Both leptonic and hadronic scenarios are adopted to explain the multi-wavelength SEDs and we find them to be marginally consistent with the 2FHL spectra above 50 GeV. We derive the expected degree of X-ray and $γ$-ray polarizations both for the average and elevated activity states and note that: (i) a hadronic radiative model consistentl…
In this work, we simulate $γ$-rays created in the hadronic jets of the compact object in binary stellar systems known as microquasars. We utilize as main computational tool the $3$-D relativistic magneto-hydro-dynamical code PLUTO combined with in house derived codes. Our simulated experiments refer to the SS433 X-ray binary, a stellar system in which hadronic jets have been observed. We examine two new model configurations that employ hadron-based emission mechanisms. The simulations aim to explore the dependence of the $γ$-ray emissions on the dynamical as well as the radiative properties of…
We present a new X-ray luminosity function of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) utilizing the latest {\it Swift}/BAT 105-month X-ray source catalog. Contrary to previous studies of FSRQs in the X-ray band, using the luminosity-dependent density evolution model, we find that FSRQs show evolutionary peaks at $z\sim1-2$ depending on luminosities. Our result is rather consistent with the evolution of FSRQs seen in the radio and GeV bands, although the number density is a factor of 5--10 smaller. We further explore the contribution of FSRQs to the cosmic MeV gamma-ray background radiation. We fin…
Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) can suffer strong absorption above E = 25/(1+z) GeV, due to gamma-gamma interaction if the emitting region is at sub-parsec scale from the super-massive black hole (SMBH). Gamma-ray flares from these astrophysical sources can investigate the location of the high-energy emission region and the physics of the radiating processes. We present a remarkable gamma-ray flaring activity from FSRQ PKS 2023-07 during April 2016, as detected by both AGILE and Fermi satellites. An intensive multi-wavelength campaign, triggered by Swift, covered the entire duration of the…
During a decade of the $Fermi$-Large Area Telescope (LAT) operation, thousands of blazars have been detected in the $γ$-ray band. However, there are still numbers of blazars that have not been detected in the $γ$-ray band. In this work, we focus on investigating why some flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are undetected by $Fermi$-LAT. By cross-matching the Candidate Gamma-ray Blazars Survey catalog with the Fourth Catalog of Active Galactic Nuclei Detected by the $Fermi$-LAT, we select 11 $γ$-ray undetected ($γ$-ray quiet) FSRQs as our sample whose quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength data ar…
The attenuation of very high energy (VHE) photons by the extragalactic background light (EBL) prevents the observation of high redshift flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). However, the correlation of VHE spectral index with source redshift suggests that EBL intensity may be less than what is predicted. This deviation can draw new constraints on opacity of the universe to VHE gamma-rays. Therefore, more FSRQs may fall above the sensitivity of the forthcoming VHE telescopes than the ones predicted by the existing EBL models. In order to account for the lower EBL intensity predicted by the index…
We present a temporal and spectral analysis of the gamma-ray flux from nine of the brightest flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) detected with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) during its first eight years of operation, with the aim of constraining the location of the emission region. Using the increased photon statistics provided from the two brightest flares of each source, we find evidence of sub-hour variability from B2 1520+31, PKS 1502+106 and PKS 1424-41, with the remaining sources showing variability on timescales of a few hours. These indicate gamma-ray emission from extremely comp…
We report simultaneous observations at different energy bands in radio, optical, UV, X-rays and $γ$ rays of the flat-spectrum radio-quasar 3C 345. We built the light curve of the source at different frequencies from 2008, the beginning of the \textit{Fermi} all-sky survey, to 2016, using new data and public archives. In particular we obtained several optical spectra, to study the behavior of emission lines and the continuum in different activity states and to derive the black hole mass. 3C 345 showed two flaring episodes in 2009, which occurred simultaneously in $γ$ ray, optical/UV and X-rays,…
Blazars are known to show flux variations over a range of energies from low energy radio to high energy gamma-rays. Cross-correlation analysis of the optical and $γ$-ray light curves in blazars shows that flux variations are generally correlated in both bands, however, there are exceptions. We explored this optical-GeV connection in four flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) by a systematic investigation of their long term optical and $γ$-ray light curves. On analysis of the four sources, namely 3C 273, 3C 279, PKS 1510$-$089 and CTA 102 we noticed different behaviours between the optical and Ge…
Study of the polarization behaviour in blazars is a powerful tool to discern the role of magnetic field in the variable emission process in their relativistic jets. We present here results of our systematic investigation on the correlation between optical flux and polarization variations for eight flat-spectrum radio quasars on various timescales using data from the Steward Observatory that covers a period of $\sim$10 years. On long time scales ($\sim$several months), from a total of 79 observing cycles, in 34 observing cycles, we found a significant positive correlation between optical flux a…
The regular monitoring of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in $γ$-rays by Fermi-LAT since past 12 years indicated six sources who exhibited extreme $γ$-ray outbursts crossing daily flux of $10^{-5}$ photons/cm$^{2}$/s. We obtained nearly-simultaneous multi-wavelength data of these sources in radio to $γ$-ray waveband from OVRO, Steward Observatory, SMARTS, Swift-UVOT, Swift-XRT, and Fermi-LAT. The time-averaged broadband Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of these sources in quiescent states were studied to get an idea about the underlying baseline radiation processes. We modeled the SEDs…
In this work, we collect quasi-simultaneous infrared, optical, X-ray and $γ$-ray data of 60 $Fermi$-4LAC flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). In the framework of the conventional one-zone leptonic model, we investigate the physical properties of $Fermi$-4LAC FSRQs' jets by modeling their quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Our main results are summarized as follows. (1) There is a linear correlation between synchrotron peak frequency and curvature of the electron energy distribution. As suggested by previous works, the slope of the best linear fitting equation of this corr…
The flat spectrum radio quasar CTA 102 ($z = 1.032$) went through a tremendous phase of variability. Since early 2016 the gamma-ray flux level has been significantly higher than in previous years. It was topped by a four month long giant outburst, where peak fluxes were more than 100 times higher than the quiescence level. Similar trends are observable in optical and X-ray energies. We have explained the giant outburst as the ablation of a gas cloud by the relativistic jet that injects additional matter into the jet and can self-consistently explain the long-term light curve. Here, we argue th…
The physical scenario responsible for gamma-ray flaring activity and its location for Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars is still debated. The study of the statistical distribution of waiting-times between flares (the time intervals between consecutive activity peaks) can give information on the distribution of flaring times, and constrain the physical mechanism responsible for gamma-ray emission. We adopt here a Scan-Statistic driven clustering method (iSRS) to recognize flaring states within the FERMI-LAT data, and identify the time of activity-peaks. Results: Flares waiting times can be described …
High-redshift blazars are valuable tools to study the early Universe. So far only a handful of $γ$-ray blazars have been found at redshifts above 3. $γ$-ray signals are detected in the direction of PMN J2219-2719 ($z=3.63$) and PMN J2321-0827 ($z=3.16$) by analyzing the 10-year $Fermi$-LAT Pass 8 data. PMN J2219-2719 is not distinguished from the background in the global analysis. During the 5-month epoch, the TS value is 47.8 and the flux is more than 10 times of the 10-year averaged flux. In addition, the angular distance between the $γ$-ray position and the radio position of PMN J2219-2719 …
On July 30th, 2019 IceCube detected a high-energy astrophysical muon neutrino candidate, IC-190730A, with a $67\%$ probability of astrophysical origin. The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1502+106 is in the error circle of the neutrino. Motivated by this observation, we study PKS 1502+106 as a possible source of IC-190730A. PKS 1502+106 was in a quiet state in terms of UV/optical/X-ray/gamma-ray flux at the time of the neutrino alert, we therefore model the expected neutrino emission from the source during its average long-term state, and investigate whether the emission of IC-190730A as…
We present statistical analyses of a large homogenous data sample of Fermi-detected blazars thoroughly studied in order to reassess the relationship between flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and subclasses of BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) blazar populations. We discovered from the average values of gamma-ray and X-ray spectral indices that the sequence of distribution is indicative of the blazar orientation scheme. Analyses of FSRQs and BL Lacs data show difference in the shape of gamma-ray and X-ray indices: significant anti-correlation (r~ greater than - 0.79) exists between gamma-ray and …
We performed a study of high redshift ($z>2$) quasars, looking for the main differences between Radio Loud Quasars (RLQ) and Radio Quiet Quasars (RQQ) in the X-ray band. Our sample of 472 RQQ and 81 RLQ was selected by cross-matching the SDSS DR7 quasars catalog with the Chandra Source Catalog. We computed the X-ray luminosity for the two samples and confirmed the X-ray luminosity excess of RLQ over RQQ. We fit the X-ray spectra assuming the absorbed power law model and obtained the photon index ($Γ$) values for all the sources in the sample. We excluded quasars with a low number of counts ($<…
Flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) whose brightness is dominated by a relativistically beamed core, are frequently found in 'blazar state' commonly inferred from a high optical polarization ( > 3%), and/or a large continuum variability. Here we use these two prime optical markers to investigate continuance of an FSRQ in blazar (or non-blazar) state over an exceptionally long time baseline spanning 4 decades. Our basic sample is a well-defined, unbiased set of 80 FSRQs whose blazar state stood confirmed during 1980s from optical polarimetry. Four decades later, blazar state of each FSRQ is asc…
We have presented a multiwavelength temporal and spectral study of the Blazar PKS 0346-27 for the period 2019 January-2021 December (MJD 58484-59575) using data from Fermi-LAT (gamma-rays), Swift-XRT (X-rays) and Swift-UVOT (ultra-violet and optical). We identified multiple flaring episodes by analyzing the gamma-ray light curve generated from the Fermi-LAT data over a two-year period. The light curves of these individual gamma-ray flares with one-day binning were then modeled using a sum-of-exponentials fit. We found the minimum variability times for the gamma-ray light curve to be 1.34 +\- 0…
The flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 279 was observed in an extremely high activity state on June 16, 2015 (MJD 57189). In this paper, we investigate the properties of this flaring episode in the high energy $γ$-ray and optical bands using data from the \emph{Fermi}-LAT, SMARTS, and SPOL observations during the period June 1-30, 2015 (MJD 57174-57203). The highest emission state in the $γ$-ray band detected by the \emph{Fermi}-LAT exhibits a peak flux of $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^{-7}$ erg~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$ which is more than 25 times the flux level measured in the low activity state of the source. Th…
The concept of the evolutionary sequence of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been challenged in the last few decades since AGN subclasses are considered to be different due to their viewing angle. In this paper, we collected a sample of 1108 blazars (472 flat-spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs and 636 BL Lacertae objects, BL Lacs) and 120 Seyfert galaxies (SGs) with available redshifts and spectral properties in radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands in order to compare the properties of SGs and the blazar subclasses and also explore their possible unification through evolution. It is f…
Flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) is the most luminous blazar at the GeV energies. In this paper, we probe the photon-axion-like particle (ALP) oscillation effect on the latest very-high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray observations of the FSRQ 4C+21.35 (PKS 1222+216). The $γ$-ray spectra are measured by the collaborations Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes (MAGIC), Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS), and Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), which cover two activity VHE flares of 4C+21.35 in 2010 and 2014. We show the spectral energy distributions (SEDs)…
