The concept of the evolutionary sequence of jetted active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been challenged in the last few decades since AGN subclasses are considered to be different due to their viewing angle. In this paper, we collected a sample of 1108 blazars (472 flat-spectrum radio quasars, FSRQs and 636 BL Lacertae objects, BL Lacs) and 120 Seyfert galaxies (SGs) with available redshifts and spectral properties in radio, optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray bands in order to compare the properties of SGs and the blazar subclasses and also explore their possible unification through evolution. It is found that the ratio of the relative difference of SGs and the blazar subclasses are approximately the same implying that they have an evolutionary relationship. We discovered from the results of a two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K.S.) test, that the probabilities (p) for the composite spectral indices: optical-X-ray radio-X-ray radio-optical and X-ray-gamma-ray to come from the same parent population is p, less than 0.05, implying that the null hypothesis cannot be rejected, thus, supports SGs-BL Lacs-FSRQs evolutionary sequence................. These results agree with the prediction that SGs have an evolutionary relationship with the blazar subclasses.
In the frame of unification schemes for radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs), FR I radio galaxies are believed to be BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects with the relativistic jet misaligned to our line of sight, and FR II radio galaxies correspond to misaligned radio quasars. The Ledlow-Owen dividing line for FR I/FR II dichotomy in the optical absolute magnitude of host galaxy-radio luminosity (M_R-L_Rad) plane can be translated to the line in the black hole mass-jet power (M_bh-Q_jet) plane by using two empirical relations: Q_jet-L_Rad and M_bh}-M_R. We use a sample of radio quasars and BL Lac …
We present statistical analyses of a large homogenous data sample of Fermi-detected blazars thoroughly studied in order to reassess the relationship between flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and subclasses of BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) blazar populations. We discovered from the average values of gamma-ray and X-ray spectral indices that the sequence of distribution is indicative of the blazar orientation scheme. Analyses of FSRQs and BL Lacs data show difference in the shape of gamma-ray and X-ray indices: significant anti-correlation (r~ greater than - 0.79) exists between gamma-ray and …
One of the major challenges in studying the cosmic evolution of relativistic jets is the identification of the high-redshift ($z>3$) BL Lacertae objects, a class of jetted active galactic nuclei characterized by their quasi-featureless optical spectra. Here we report the identification of the first $γ$-ray emitting BL Lac object, 4FGL~J1219.0+3653 (J1219), beyond $z=3$, i.e., within the first two billion years of the age of the Universe. The optical and near-infrared spectra of J1219 taken from 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias exhibit no emission lines down to an equivalent width of $\sim$3.5 A…
This study aims at identifying luminous quasars at $z>5.7$ among X-ray-selected sources in the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) in order to place a lower limit on black hole accretion well into the epoch of re-ionisation. We confirm the low significance detection with eROSITA of a previously known, optically faint $z=6.56$ quasar from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) survey. We obtained a pointed follow-up observation of the source with the Chandra X-ray telescope in order to confirm the eROSITA detection. Using new near-infrared spectroscopy, we d…
RX J0134.2-4258 is one of the most super-Eddington narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, on which we conducted a monitoring campaign from radio to X-rays. In this paper, we present a detailed analysis of its optical/UV spectra and broadband spectral energy distribution (SED). Our study shows that the preferred black hole mass of RX J0134.2-4258 is $M_{\rm BH} \sim 2 \times 10^{7}~M_{\odot}$, giving a mass accretion rate through the outer disc of $\dot{m}_{\rm out} \sim 20$ (assuming zero spin), compared to the observed luminosity ratio $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} \sim 6$. This reduction in radia…
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies are defined on the basis of their line widths, and they are generally considered to be high Eddington ratio sources. But in the context of the Quasar Main Sequence, high Eddington rate sources are those which have weak [O III] lines and strong Fe II lines. There is an overlap between the two populations, but they are not identical. Thus these two selection criteria give a different view on which objects are actually high Eddington ratio sources. We discuss this issue in the context of the broad band spectral energy density, emission line shape modeling, Fe II pse…
We present new calculations of the CAT3D clumpy torus models, which now include a more physical dust sublimation model as well as AGN anisotropic emission. These new models allow graphite grains to persist at temperatures higher than the silicate dust sublimation temperature. This produces stronger near-infrared emission and bluer mid-infrared (MIR) spectral slopes. We make a statistical comparison of the CAT3D model MIR predictions with a compilation of sub-arcsecond resolution ground-based MIR spectroscopy of 52 nearby Seyfert galaxies (median distance of 36 Mpc) and 10 quasars. We focus on …
We consider whether Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs) and Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are similar, as suggested by Brandt & Gallagher (2000) and Boroson (2002). For this purpose we constructed a sample of 11 BAL QSOs from existing Chandra and Swift observations. We found that BAL QSOs and NLS1s both operate at high Eddington ratios L/Ledd, although BAL QSOs have slightly lower L/Ledd. BAL QSOs and NLS1s in general have high FeII/H$β$ and low [OIII]/H$β$ ratios following the classic 'Boroson \& Green' eigenvector 1 relation. We also found that the mass accretion rates $\dot{M}…
Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is one of the few classes of active galactic nuclei (AGN) harboring powerful relativistic jets and detected in $γ$ rays. NLS1s are well-known X-ray sources. While in non-jetted sources the origin of this X-ray emission may be a hot corona surrounding the accretion disk, in jetted objects, especially beamed ones, the contribution of corona and relativistic jet is difficult to disentangle without a proper sampling of the hard X-ray emission. For this reason, we observed with \textit{NuSTAR} the first four NLS1s detected at high energy $γ$ rays. These data, …
We present a rest-frame composite spectrum for Seyfert 1 galaxies using spectra obtained from the DR12 release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The spectrum is constructed by combining data from a total of 10,112 galaxies, spanning a redshift range of 0 to 0.793. We produce an electronic table of the median and geometric mean composite Seyfert 1 spectrum. We measure the spectral index of the composite spectrum, and compare it with that of the composite quasar spectrum. We also measure the flux and width of the strong emission lines present in the composite spectrum. We compare the entir…
Matter flows in the central regions of quasars during their active phases are probably responsible for the properties of the super-massive black holes and that of the bulges of host galaxies. To understand how this mechanism works, we need to characterize the geometry and the physical state of the accreting matter at cosmological redshifts. The few high quality X-ray spectra of distant QSO have been collected by adding sparse pointings of single objects obtained during X-ray monitoring campaigns. This could have introduced spurious spectral features due to source variability. Here we present a…
We analyze the jet-disk coupling for different subsamples from a complete hard X-ray Seyfert sample to study the coupling indices and their relation to accretion rate. The results are: (1) the power-law coupling index ranges from nearly unity (linear correlation) for radio-loud Seyferts to significantly less than unity for radio-quiet ones. This declining trend of coupling index also holds from larger sources to compact ones; (2) the Seyferts with intermediate to high accretion rate (Eddington ratio $λ\sim$ 0.001 to 0.3) show a linear jet-disk coupling, but it shallows from near to super Eddin…
We present the results of a dust-reverberation survey of quasars at redshifts z<0.6. We found a delayed response of the K-band flux variation after the optical flux variation in 25 out of 31 targets, and obtained the lag time between them for 22 targets. Combined with the results for nearby Seyfert galaxies, we provide the largest homogeneous collection of K-band dust-reverberation data for 36 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This doubles the sample and includes the most distant AGN and the largest lag so far measured. We estimated the optical luminosity of the AGN component of each targe…
Statistical analyses are invaluable methods used to understand intrinsic emission processes and the unification of extragalactic radio sources. In this paper, we collected radio, X-ray and γ-ray data of blazars from the Fermi-LAT and Seyfert galaxies from the INTEGRAL survey and investigated the relationship between the emission properties of Seyfert galaxies and blazar subclasses of flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lac subclasses (BL Lacs). The results show from the average values that these objects follow a sequence that is indicative of probable Seyfert galaxies - BL Lacs - FSRQs …
We present results on a systematic study of flux variability on hourly time-scales in a large sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the 3-79 keV band using data from Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array. Our sample consists of 4 BL Lac objects (BL Lacs), 3 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) 24 Seyfert 1, 42 Seyfert 2 and 8 narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies. We find that in the 3-79 keV band, about 65% of the sources in our sample show significant variations on hourly time scales. Using Mann-Whitney U-test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we find no difference in the variability behaviou…
In order to better understand the nature of post-starburst quasars (PSQs) in the context of galaxy evolution, we compare their properties to those of post-starburst galaxies and quasars from appropriately selected samples possessing similar redshift ($z \sim 0.3$), luminosity ($M_r \sim -$23), and data quality. We consider morphologies, spectral features, and derived physical properties of the stellar populations and central supermassive black hole. PSQs themselves come in two types: the more luminous AGNs with more luminous post-starburst stellar populations hosted by elliptical galaxies, som…
We present a multi-frequency study of PKS J1222$+$0413 (4C$+$04.42), currently the highest redshift $γ$-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 ($γ$-NLS1). We assemble a broad spectral energy distribution (SED) including previously unpublished datasets: X-ray data obtained with the NuSTAR and Neil Gehrels Swift observatories; near-infrared, optical and UV spectroscopy obtained with VLT X-shooter; and multiband radio data from the Effelsberg telescope. These new observations are supplemented by archival data from the literature. We apply physical models to the broadband SED, parameterising the accre…
We report the identification of blazar candidates behind the Magellanic Clouds. The objects were selected from the Magellanic Quasars Survey (MQS), which targeted the entire Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 70\% of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). Among the 758 MQS quasars and 898 of unidentified (featureless spectra) objects, we identified a sample of 44 blazar candidates, including 27 flat spectrum radio quasars and 17 BL Lacertae objects, respectively. All the blazar candidates from our sample were identified with respect to their radio, optical, and mid-infrared properties. The newly sele…
The X-ray and mid-IR emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN) are strongly correlated. However, while various published parameterizations of this correlation are consistent with the low-redshift, local Seyfert galaxy population, extrapolations of these relations to high luminosity differ by an order of magnitude at nuL(nu)(6um) = 1e47 erg/s. Using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we determine the mid-IR luminosities of the most luminous quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and present a revised formulation of the X-ray to mid-IR relation of AGN which is appropriate fro…
The study of narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) is now mostly limited to low redshift ($z<0.8$) because their definition requires the presence of the H$β$ emission line, which is redshifted out of the spectral coverage of major ground-based spectroscopic surveys at $z>0.8$. We studied the correlation between the properties of H$β$ and Mg II lines of a large sample of SDSS DR14 quasars to find high-$z$ NLS1 candidates. Based on the strong correlation of $\mathrm{FWHM(MgII)=(0.880\pm 0.005) \times FWHM(Hβ)+ (0.438\pm0.018)}$, we present a sample of high-$z$ NLS1 candidates having FWHM of Mg …
We present an atlas of mid-infrared (mid-IR) ~7.5-13micron spectra of 45 local active galactic nuclei (AGN) obtained with CanariCam on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC) as part of an ESO/GTC large program. The sample includes Seyferts and other low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) at a median distance of 35Mpc and luminous AGN, namely PG quasars, (U)LIRGs, and radio galaxies (RG) at a median distance of 254Mpc. To date, this is the largest mid-IR spectroscopic catalog of local AGN at sub-arcsecond resolution (median 0.3arcsec). The goal of this work is to give an overview of the spectroscopic pro…
Using published work on the Narrow Line Region of Active Nuclei, we make a comparison of the observed [O III] $4363Å/5007Å$ ratio observed among quasars, Seyfert 2's and spatially resolved NLR plasma. It is broadly accepted that the span of this ratio among quasars, from 0.015 to 0.2, is the result of collisional deexcitation as corroborated by Baskin and Laor (2005). However, the coincidence of the AGN at towards the lowest [O III] ratios, however, suggests that it represents plasma in the low density regime, where this ratio can be interpreted as the actual NLR temperature. Using the density…
Inspired by our serendipitous discovery of six AGNs with varying broad-Halpha fluxes over years out of our searching for intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), we conduct a systematic investigation of changing-look (CL) and large-variability AGNs. We collect all the CL AGNs at z<0.15 and the reverberation mapped AGNs with strongly variable broad Halpha, and perform careful decomposition fittings to both their images and spectra. We find two observational facts: (1) The host galaxies of local CL and large-variability AGNs, mainly being Seyferts, are in the red (gas-poor) tail of the general Sey…
We present images of 29 post-starburst quasars (PSQs) from a Hubble Space Telescope (\emph{HST}) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel Snapshot program. These broad-lined active galactic nuclei (AGN) possess the spectral signatures of massive ($M_{burst} \sim 10^{10} M_{\odot}$), moderate-aged stellar populations (hundreds of Myrs). Thus, their composite nature provides insight into the AGN-starburst connection. We measure quasar-to-host galaxy light contributions via semi-automated two-dimensional light profile fits of PSF-subtracted images. We examine the host morphologies, as…
We use a semi-empirical model to reproduce the 0.1-10um spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of 85 luminous quasars. In the model, the continuum emission from the accretion disk as well as the nebular lines are represented by a single empirical template (disk), where differences in the optical spectral index are reproduced by varying the amount of extinction. The near- and mid-infrared emission of the AGN-heated dust is modelled as the combination of two black-bodies (dust). The model fitting shows that the disk and dust components are remarkably uniform among individual quasars, wit…
