Most bright sources of the radiation in hard x-ray and gamma--ray regions are undulator sources and Compton based ones. These sources are ultimate for production of polarized positrons necessary for future linear colliders ILC, CLIC. We developed a novel method for evaluating the energy spectrum of electrons emitting the undulator- and the inverse Compton radiation. The method based on Poisson weighted superposition of electron states is applicable for whole range of the emission intensity per electron pass through the driving force, from much less than unity emitted photons (Compton sources) to many photons emitted (undulators), and for any energy of the photons. The method allows for account contributions in the energy spread both from the Poisson statistics and diffusion due to recoils. The theoretical results were confirmed by simulations. The electron energy spectrum was used for evaluation of the on-axis density of photons and their coherency making use of the `carrier--envelope' presentation for the emitting photons. The evaluated maximum coherency degree of single--electron radiation is evaluated to be proportional to the undulator spatial period and inversely to the energy of electrons, the number of coherently emitted undulator periods almost independent of the undulator deflection parameter. The results of our study are applicable both for the classical limit of classical undulator and for the quantum limit of Compton gamma--ray sources.
We present measurements of slice energy spread growth due to quantum fluctuations of the undulator radiation at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser. The method uses a recently installed diagnostic wakefield structure, which enables measurements of the longitudinal phase space after the hard X-ray undulator. The effect of quantum diffusion in the undulator is measured for the first time, and the results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
Laser wakefield accelerators have emerged as a promising candidate for compact synchrotron radiation and even x-ray free electron lasers. Today, to make the electrons emit electromagnetic radiation, the trajectories of laser wakefield accelerated electrons are deflected by transverse wakefield, counter-propagating laser field or external permanent magnet insertion device. Here, we propose a novel type of undulator which has a few hundred microns of period and tens of Tesla of magnetic field. The undulator consists of a bifilar capacitor-coil target which sustains strong discharge current that …

Due to the various applications of THz sources, we developed a pure permanent magnet (PPM) undulator with 8 periods and min/max values of gap equal to 15/25, to use at the end of our current 10 MeV linear accelerator (linac) in order to produce THz coherent radiation. We used RADIA for simulation and calculation of our magnet and B2E code for calculation of its radiation harmonics. After fabrication, we also measured the magnetic field via high precision Hall probes. Calculations and measurements are in good agreements. These calculations show that it is possible to reach photon energies from …
Recently a mechanism of storage ring operation based on the steady-state microbunching has been proposed and investigated, which contains a laser cavity modulator providing the longitudinal focusing for the circulating microbunches. In this paper we analyze the impact of the coherent undulator radiation on the longitudinal single-bunch multi-turn collective dynamics, exploring a new possible instability mechanism. We formulate the multi-turn equations of motion for the single microbunch as two sets of difference equations in the modulator and in the remaining storage ring. The dispersion equat…
The generation of frequency-tunable, narrow-bandwidth and carrier-envelope-phase stable THz pulses with fields in the MV/cm regime that can be appropriately timed to the femtosecond X-ray pulses from free-electron-lasers is of highest scientific interest. It will enable to follow the electronic and structural dynamics stimulated by (non)linear selective excitations of matter on few femtosecond time and Ångstrom length scales. In this article, a scheme based on superradiant undulator radiation generated just after the XFEL is proposed. The concept utilizes cutting edge superconducting undulator…
Generally, turn-to-turn fluctuations of synchrotron radiation power in a storage ring depend on the 6D phase-space distribution of the electron bunch. This effect is related to the interference of fields radiated by different electrons. Changes in the relative electron positions and velocities inside the bunch result in fluctuations in the total emitted energy per pass in a synchrotron radiation source. This effect has been previously described assuming constant and equal electron velocities before entering the synchrotron radiation source. In this paper, we present a generalized formula for t…

Generally, turn-to-turn power fluctuations of incoherent spontaneous synchrotron radiation in a storage ring depend on the 6D phase-space distribution of the electron bunch. In some cases, if only one parameter of the distribution is unknown, this parameter can be determined from the measured magnitude of these power fluctuations. In this Letter, we report an absolute measurement (no free parameters or calibration) of a small vertical emittance (5--15 nm rms) of a flat beam by this method, under conditions, when it is unresolvable by a conventional synchrotron light beam size monitor.
In a previous paper we discussed the physics of a microbunched electron beam kicked by the dipole field of a corrector magnet by describing the kinematics of coherent undulator radiation after the kick. We demonstrated that the effect of aberration of light supplies the basis for understanding phenomena like the deflection of coherent undulator radiation by a dipole magnet. We illustrated this fact by examining the operation of an XFEL under the steady state assumption, that is a harmonic time dependence. We argued that in this particular case the microbunch front tilt has no objective meaning…
We study turn-by-turn fluctuations in the number of spontaneously emitted photons from an undulator, installed in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) electron storage ring at Fermilab. A theoretical model is presented, showing the relative contributions due to the discrete nature of light emission and to the incoherent sum of fields from different electrons in the bunch. The model is compared with a previous experiment at Brookhaven and with new experiments we carried out at IOTA. Our experiments focused on the case of a large number of longitudinal and transverse radiation modes, a …
The radiation of twisted photons by undulators filled with a homogeneous dielectric dispersive medium is considered. The general formulas for the average number of radiated twisted photons are obtained. The radiation of undulators in the dipole regime and the radiation of the helical and planar wigglers are studied in detail. It is shown that the selection rules for radiation of twisted photons established for undulators in a vacuum also holds for undulators filled with a dielectric medium. In the case of a medium with plasma permittivity the lower undulator harmonics do not form. This fact ca…
The explicit expressions for the average number of twisted photons radiated by a charged particle in an elliptical undulator in the classical approximation as well as in the approach accounting for the quantum recoil are obtained. It is shown that radiation emitted by a particle moving along an elliptical helix which evolves around the axis specifying the angular momentum of twisted photons obeys the selection rule: $m+n$ is an even number, where $m$ is a projection of the total angular momentum of a twisted photon and $n$ is the harmonic number of the undulator radiation. This selection rule …
We discuss the physics of a microbunched electron beam kicked by the dipole field of a corrector magnet by describing the kinematics of coherent undulator radiation after the kick. Particle tracking shows that the electron beam direction changes after the kick, while the orientation of the microbunching wavefront stays unvaried. Therefore, electrons motion and wavefront normal have different directions. Coherent radiation emission in a downstream undulator is expected to be dramatically suppressed as soon as the kick angle becomes larger than the divergence of the output radiation. In fact, ac…
