Radiation appearing when relativistic charged particles moves along a periodic structure without external fields is investigated. It is shown that nonsynchronous spatial harmonics of wakefields excited by bunched charged particles can give rise to the particle oscillatory motion that consequently generates the undulator-type radiation (UR). A theory of the undulator-type radiation emitted by ultrarelativistic charged particles in the self-wakefields is given. An analytical expression for the spontaneous UR power of the ultrarelativistic monochromatic charged bunch moving in a weakly corrugated axially-symmetrical waveguide is derived by the perturbation method. The parameter region, a particle number and particle energies at which the spontaneous UR power exceeds the wakefield power is analyzed.
We show that a short relativistic electron beam propagating in a plasma with a density gradient perpendicular to the direction of motion generates a wakefield in which a witness bunch experiences a transverse force. A density gradient oscillating along the beam path would create a periodically varying force---an undulator, with an estimated strength of the equivalent magnetic field more than ten Tesla. This opens an avenue for creation of a high-strength, short-period undulators, which eventually may lead to all-plasma, free electron lasers where a plasma wakefield acceleration is naturally co…
In free electron laser facilities, almost every kind of device will generate wakefield when an electron beam passes through it. Most of the wakefields are undesired and have a negative effect on the electron beam, which means a decrease of FEL performance. As for the SXFEL test facility, the sophisticated layout and the cumulative effect of such a long undulator section lead to an obvious wakefield, which is strong enough that can not be ignored. Based on two deflecting cavities at the entrance and the exit of the undulator section with corresponding profile monitors, we measured the wakefield…
Besides the original seeded undulator line, in the Soft X-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL) user facility at Shanghai, a second undulator line based on self-amplified spontaneous emission is proposed to achieve 2 nm laser pulse with extremely high brightness. In this paper, the beam energy deviation induced by the undulator wakefields is numerically obtained, and it is verified to have a good agreement between 3D and 2D simulation results. The beam energy loss along the undulator degrades the expected FEL output performance. Impact of wakefields on pulse energy, radiation power and spectrum is d…
Laser wakefield accelerators have emerged as a promising candidate for compact synchrotron radiation and even x-ray free electron lasers. Today, to make the electrons emit electromagnetic radiation, the trajectories of laser wakefield accelerated electrons are deflected by transverse wakefield, counter-propagating laser field or external permanent magnet insertion device. Here, we propose a novel type of undulator which has a few hundred microns of period and tens of Tesla of magnetic field. The undulator consists of a bifilar capacitor-coil target which sustains strong discharge current that …
We consider spectrum-angular characteristics of the undulator-type radiation emitted by a bunch of relativistic charged particles because of interacting with the nonsynchronous spatial harmonics of the transverse wakefields excited by this bunch as it moves in a periodic structure. The conditions acceptable for possible experimental verification when incoherent undulator-type radiation power exceeds power loss associated with exciting the wakefields are discussed.
We outline the fundamental coherent radiation emission processes from a bunched charged particles beam. In contrast to spontaneous emission of radiation from a random electron beam that is proportional to the number of particles, a pre-bunched electron beam can emit spontaneously coherent radiation proportional to the number of particles - squared, through the process of (spontaneous) superradiance (SP-SR) (in the sense of Dicke's). The coherent SP-SR emission of a bunched electron beam can be even further enhanced by a process of stimulated-superradiance (ST-SR) in the presence of a seed inje…
We investigate the effect of wall roughness on the wakefield-induced energy variation in the undulator beam pipe of LCLS-II. We find that a wall roughness equivalent to an rms surface slope of 30 mr increases the total induced energy variation within the bunch (due to the resistive wall wake) by a modest 20%.
We present measurements of slice energy spread growth due to quantum fluctuations of the undulator radiation at the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser. The method uses a recently installed diagnostic wakefield structure, which enables measurements of the longitudinal phase space after the hard X-ray undulator. The effect of quantum diffusion in the undulator is measured for the first time, and the results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
In LCLS-II, after acceleration and compression and just before entering the undulator, the beam passes through 2.5 km of 24.5 mm (radius) stainless steel pipe. The bunch that passes through the pipe is extremely short---with an rms of 8 um for the nominal 100 pC case. Thus, even though the pipe has a large aperture, the wake that applies is the {\it short-range} resistive wall wakefield. The bunch distribution is approximately uniform, and therefore the wake induced voltage is characterized by a rather linear voltage chirp. It turns out that the wake supplies needed dechirping to the LCLS-II b…
Self-seeding options for the LCLS baseline were recently investigated using a scheme which relies on a single-crystal monochromator in Bragg-transmission geometry. The LCLS low-charge (0.02 nC) mode of operation was considered in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The wakefield effects from the linac and from the undulator vacuum chamber are much reduced at such low charge, and can be ignored. In this paper we extend our previous investigations to the case of the LCLS mode of operation with nominal charge. Based on the LCLS start-to-end simulation for an electron beam…
XFELs provide X-ray pulses with unprecedented peak brightness and ultrashort duration. They are usually driven by planar undulators, meaning that the output radiation is linearly polarized. For many experimental applications, however, polarization control is critical: besides the ability to produce linearly polarized radiation, one often needs the possibility of generating circularly polarized radiation with a high, stable degree of polarization. This may be achieved by using a first part of the XFEL undulator to produce bunching and then, by propagating the the bunched beam through an "afterb…
A new elementary mechanism of radiation due to the oscillatory character of a radiation reaction force appearing when a relativistic charged particle moves along a periodic structure without external fields is investigated. It is shown that the non-synchronous spatial harmonics of Cherenkov-type radiation (CR) can give rise to the oscillation of a particle which consequently generates undulator-type radiation (UR). In the spectral region, where the diffraction of generated waves is essential, the radiation manifests itself in the coherent interference of CR and UR. A pure undulator -type radia…
We report on high resolution measurements of resonances in the spectrum of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) at the Canadian Light Source (CLS). The resonances permeate the spectrum at wavenumber intervals of $0.074 ~\textrm{cm}^{-1}$, and are highly stable under changes in the machine setup (energy, bucket filling pattern, CSR in bursting or continuous mode). Analogous resonances were predicted long ago in an idealized theory as eigenmodes of a smooth toroidal vacuum chamber driven by a bunched beam moving on a circular orbit. A corollary of peaks in the spectrum is the presence of pulses …
High peak power, tunable, narrowband terahertz emitters are becoming sought after given their portability, efficiency, and ability to be deployed in the field for industrial, medical, and military applications. The use of accelerator systems producing THz frequencies via Cherenkov radiation, generated by passing an electron beam through a slow-wave wakefield structure, is a promising method to meet future THz requirements. To date, efforts have been dedicated to analysis and design of sources utilizing laser seeded bunched electron beam drivers with relativistic energies beyond 5 MeV. Presente…
We discuss design and practical realization of novel gamma-ray Crystal-based Light Sources (CLS) that can be constructed through exposure of oriented crystals (linear, bent, periodically bent) to beams of ultrarelativistic charged particles. In an exemplary case study, we estimate brilliance of radiation emitted in a Crystalline Undulator (CU) LS by available positron beams. Intensity of CU radiation in the photon energy range $10^0-10^1$ MeV, which is inaccessible to conventional synchrotrons, undulators and XFELs, greatly exceeds that of laser-Compton scattering LSs and can be higher than pr…
