In this paper we analyze the invariance of the Dirac equation under disformal transformations depending on the propagating spinor field. Using the Weyl-Cartan formalism, we construct a large class of disformal maps between different metric tensors, respecting the order of differentiability of the Dirac operator and satisfying the Clifford algebra in both metrics. Then, we have shown that there is a subclass of solutions of the Dirac equation, provided by Inomata's condition, which keeps the Dirac operator invariant under the action of the disformal group.
We show that the effective theory describing single component continuous media with a linear and constant equation of state of the form $p=wρ$ is invariant under a 1-parameter family of continuous disformal transformations. In the special case of $w=1/3$ (ultrarelativistic gas), such a family reduces to conformal transformations. As examples, perfect fluids, homogeneous and isotropic solids are discussed.
We study disformal transformations of the metric in the cosmological context. We first consider the disformal transformation generated by a scalar field $ϕ$ and show that the curvature and tensor perturbations on the uniform $ϕ$ slicing, on which the scalar field is homogeneous, are non-linearly invariant under the disformal transformation. Then we discuss the transformation properties of the evolution equations for the curvature and tensor perturbations at full non-linear order in the context of spatial gradient expansion as well as at linear order. In particular, we show that the transformat…
The Horndeski action is the most general one involving a metric and a scalar field that leads to second-order field equations in four dimensions. Being the natural extension of the well-known scalar-tensor theories, its structure and properties are worth analyzing along the experience accumulated in the latter context. Here, we argue that disformal transformations play, for the Horndeski theory, a similar role to that of conformal transformations for scalar-tensor theories a la Brans-Dicke.
We show that Maxwell's electrodynamics in vacuum is invariant under active transformations of the metric. These metrics are related by disformal mappings induced by derivatives of the gauge vector $A_μ$ such that the gauge symmetry is preserved. Our results generalize the well known conformal invariance of electrodynamics and characterize a new type of internal symmetry of the theory. The group structure associated with these transformations is also investigated in details.
We show that under a general disformal transformation the linear comoving curvature perturbation is not identically invariant, but is invariant on superhorizon scales for any theory that is disformally related to Horndeski's theory. The difference between disformally related curvature perturbations is found to be given in terms of the comoving density perturbation associated with a single canonical scalar field. In General Relativity it is well-known that this quantity vanishes on superhorizon scales through the Poisson equation that is obtained on combining the Hamiltonian and momentum constr…
The invariance of physical observables under disformal transformations is considered. It is known that conformal transformations leave physical observables invariant. However, whether it is true for disformal transformations is still an open question. In this paper, it is shown that a pure disformal transformation without any conformal factor is equivalent to rescaling the time coordinate. Since this rescaling applies equally to all the physical quantities, physics must be invariant under a disformal transformation, that is, neither causal structure, propagation speed nor any other property of…
We study the frame dependence/independence of cosmological observables under disformal transformations, extending the previous results regarding conformal transformations, and provide the correspondence between Jordan-frame and Einstein-frame variables. We consider quantities such as the gravitational constant in the Newtonian limit, redshift, luminosity and angular diameter distances, as well as the distance-duality relation. Also, the Boltzmann equation, the observed specific intensity, and the adiabaticity condition are discussed. Since the electromagnetic action changes under disformal tra…
It is known that Horndeski theories can be transformed to a sub-class of Gleyzes-Langlois-Piazza-Vernizzi (GLPV) theories under the disformal transformation of the metric $g_{μν} \to Ω^2(ϕ)g_{μν}+Γ(ϕ,X) \nabla_μ ϕ\nabla_ν ϕ$, where $Ω$ is a function of a scalar field $ϕ$ and $Γ$ is another function depending on both $ϕ$ and $X=g^{μν}\nabla_μ ϕ\nabla_ν ϕ$. We show that, with the choice of unitary gauge, both curvature and tensor perturbations on the flat isotropic cosmological background are generally invariant under the disformal transformation. By means of the effective field theories encompa…
We investigate how the comoving curvature and tensor perturbations are transformed under the generalized disformal transformation with the second-order covariant derivatives of the scalar field, where the free functions depend on the fundamental elements constructed with the covariant derivatives of the scalar field with at most the quadratic order of the second-order covariant derivatives. Our analysis reveals that on the superhorizon scales the difference between the comoving curvature perturbations in the original and new frames is given by the combination of the time derivative of the como…

We investigate invariant canonical transformations of a spatially covariant scalar-tensor theory of gravity, called the XG theory, by which the action or the Hamiltonian and the primary constraints keep their forms invariant. We derive the Hamiltonian in a non perturbative manner and complete the Hamiltonian analysis for all regions of the theory. We confirm that the theory has at most 3 degrees of freedom in all regions of the theory as long as the theory has the symmetry under the spatial diffeormorphism. Then, we derive the invariant canonical transformation by using the infinitesimal trans…
The Maxwell action is conformally invariant and classically ignorant of conformally flat metrics. However, if the vector lives in a disformal metric--- as it does if residing upon a moving brane---this is no longer true. The disformal coupling is then mediated by a Dirac-Born-Infeld scalar field. Here a systematic dynamical system analysis is developed for anisotropic Bianchi I cosmology with a massive disformally coupled vector field. Several new fixed points are found, including anisotropic scaling solutions. The presented formalism here presented can be conveniently applied to general scena…
Primordial cosmological perturbations are the seeds that were cultivated by inflation and the succeeding dynamical processes, eventually leading to the current Universe. In this work, we investigate the behavior of the gauge-invariant scalar and tensor perturbations under the general extended disformal transformation, namely, $g_{μν} \rightarrow A(X,Y,Z)g_{μν} + Φ_μΦ_ν$, where $X \equiv -\tfrac{1}{2}ϕ^{;μ}ϕ_{;μ}, Y \equiv ϕ^{;μ}X_{;μ}, Z \equiv X^{;μ}X_{;μ} $ and $Φ_μ\equiv Cϕ_{;μ} + DX_{;μ}$, with $C$ and $D$ being a general functional of $(ϕ,X,Y,Z)$. We find that the tensor perturbation is i…
The second-order modified Dirac equation leading to the modified dispersion relation due to the Lorentz invariance violation corrections is suggested. The equation is formulated in the 16-component first- order form. I have obtained the projection matrix extracting solutions of the equation with definite spin projections which can be considered as the density matrix for pure spin states. Exact solutions of the equation are found for particles in the external constant and uniform magnetic field. The synchrotron radiation radius within the novel modified Dirac equation is estimated.
A generalization of the Dirac equation to the case of affine symmetry, with SL(4,R) replacing SO(1,3), is considered. A detailed analysis of a Dirac-type Poincare-covariant equation for any spin j is carried out, and the related general interlocking scheme fulfilling all physical requirements is established. Embedding of the corresponding Lorentz fields into infinite-component SL(4,R) fermionic fields, the constraints on the SL(4,R) vector-operator generalizing Dirac's gamma matrices, as well as the minimal coupling to (Metric-)Affine gravity are studied. Finally, a symmetry breaking scenario …
In the literature on $f(T)$ gravity, the status of local Lorentz invariance and the number of physical degrees of freedom have been controversial issues. Relying on a detailed Hamiltonian analysis, we show that there are several scenarios describing how local Lorentz invariance can be broken, but in the generic case, the number of physical degrees of freedom is found to be $N^*=5$; in $D$ dimensions, this number is $N^*=D(D-3)/2+(D-1)$. As expected, the theory is vulnerable to having problematical propagating modes. We compare our results with those existing in the literature. As a byproduct o…
Weyl invariant gravity has been investigated as the fundamental theory of the vector inflation. Accordingly, we consider a Weyl invariant extension of Dirac-Born-Infeld type gravity. We find that an appropriate choice of the metric removes the scalar degree of freedom which is at the first sight required by the local scale invariance of the action, and then a vector field acquires mass. Then nonminimal couplings of the vector field and curvatures are induced. We find that the Dirac-Born-Infeld type gravity is a suitable theory to the vector inflation scenario.
It has been known for a long time that the presence of torsion is in conflict with gauge invariance of the the electromagnetic field in curved Riemann-Cartan space if the Maxwell field is minimally coupled to the curved gravitational space through the covariant derivative. In search for a possible solution, we consider in this note the system of Maxwell-Dirac electrodynamics in Riemann-Cartan space. Through investigating consistency of the field equations, and taking cue from the scale invariance properties of the system, we come up with a solution that satisfies gauge invariance without havin…
We study a formulation of Dirac fermions in curved spacetime that respects general coordinate invariance as well as invariance under local spin-base transformations. The natural variables for this formulation are spacetime-dependent Dirac matrices subject to the Clifford-algebra constraint. In particular, a coframe, i.e. vierbein field is not required. The corresponding affine spin connection consists of a canonical part that is completely fixed in terms of the Dirac matrices and a free part that can be interpreted as spin torsion. A general variation of the Dirac matrices naturally induces a …
The Dirac-Bergmann algorithm is a recipe for converting a theory with a singular Lagrangian into a constrained Hamiltonian system. Constrained Hamiltonian systems include gauge theories -- general relativity, electromagnetism, Yang Mills, string theory, etc. The Dirac-Bergmann algorithm is elegant but at the same time rather complicated. It consists of a large number of logical steps linked together by a subtle chain of reasoning. Examples of the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm found in the literature are designed to isolate and illustrate just one or two of those logical steps. In this paper I analy…
This article gives a geometric interpretation of the spin base formulation with local spin base invariance of spinors on a curved space-time and in particular of a central element, the global Dirac structure, in terms of principal and vector bundles and their endomorphisms. It is shown that this is intimately related to Spin and Spin^C structures in the sense that the existence of one of those implies the existence of a Dirac structure and allows an extension to local spin base invariance. Vice versa, as a central result, the existence of a Dirac structure implies the existence of a Spin^C str…
The concept of spin-base invariance is extended to arbitrary integer dimension $d \geq 2$. Explicit formulas for the spin connection as a function of the Dirac matrices are found. We disclose the hidden spin-base invariance of the vielbein formalism and give a detailed motivation for this symmetry from first principles. The common Lorentz symmetric gauge for the vielbein is constructed for the Dirac matrices, even for metrics which are not linearly connected. Under certain criteria, it constitutes the simplest possible gauge, demonstrating why this gauge is so useful.
The set of constraints under which the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator can play the role of the dynamical variables for Euclidean supergravity is derived. These constraints arise when the gauge invariance of the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator is imposed. They impose conditions which restrict the eigenspinors of the Dirac operator.
Two Hamiltonian formulations of General Relativity, due to Pirani, Schild and Skinner (Phys. Rev. 87, 452, 1952) and Dirac (Proc. Roy. Soc. A 246, 333, 1958), are considered. Both formulations, despite having different expressions for constraints, allow one to derive four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariance. The relation between these two formulations at all stages of the Dirac approach to the constrained Hamiltonian systems is analyzed. It is shown that the complete sets of their phase-space variables are related by a transformation which satisfies the ordinary condition of canonicity known…

We consider full phase-space noncommutativity in the Dirac equation, and find that in order to preserve gauge invariance, configuration space noncommutativity must be dropped. The resulting space structure gives rise to a constant magnetic field background and this effect is explicitly seen on the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. Computing this spectrum we find a bound on the momentum noncommutative parameter $η$, $\sqrtη\lsim2.26μeV/c$.
Geometric properties of operators of quantum Dirac constraints and physical observables are studied in semiclassical theory of generic constrained systems. The invariance transformations of the classical theory -- contact canonical transformations and arbitrary changes of constraint basis -- are promoted to the quantum domain as unitary equivalence transformations. Geometry of the quantum reduction of the Dirac formalism to the physical sector of the theory is presented in the coordinate gauges and extended to unitary momentum-dependent gauges of a general type. The operators of physical obser…
We construct a Dirac equation in $κ$-Minkowski spacetime and analyse its implications. This $κ$-deformed Dirac equation is expanded as a power series involving derivatives with respect to commutative coordinates and the deformation parameter, $a$. We show that the $κ$-deformation breaks the charge conjugation invariance but preserves parity and time reversal. We then study how the Hydrogen atom spectrum is modified due to the $κ$-deformation, applying perturbation theory. Using this, we obtain bounds on the deformation parameter $a$, which are few orders higher than the Planck length. We also …
The connection between the Dirac field as the field of matter and the spacetime metric is discussed within the framework of classical field theory. Polarization structure of the Dirac field is shown to be rich enough to determine the spacetime metric locally and to explain the emergence of observed matter as localized waveforms. The localization of the waveforms is explained as the result of the local time slowdown and the Lorentz contraction as a dynamic re-shaping of the waveforms in the course of their acceleration. A definition of mass as a limiting curvature of the spinor-induced metric i…
