We study asymptotic behavior of one-step weighted $M$-estimators based on samples from arrays of not necessarily identically distributed random variables and representing explicit approximations to the corresponding consistent weighted $M$-estimators. Sufficient conditions are presented for asymptotic normality of the one-step weighted $M$-estimators under consideration. As a consequence, we consider some well-known nonlinear regression models where the procedure mentioned allow us to construct explicit asymptotically optimal estimators.
We establish asymptotic normality for estimators of the additive regression components under random censorship. To build our estimators, we couple the marginal integration method (Newey (1994)) with an initial Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted estimator of the multivariate censored regression function introduced by Carbonez et al. (1995) and Kohler et al. (2002). Asymptotic confidence bands are derived from our result.
This paper discusses minimum distance estimation method in the linear regression model with dependent errors which are strongly mixing. The regression parameters are estimated through the minimum distance estimation method, and asymptotic distributional properties of the estimators are discussed. A simulation study compares the performance of the minimum distance estimator with other well celebrated estimator. This simulation study shows the superiority of the minimum distance estimator over another estimator. KoulMde (R package) which was used for the simulation study is available online. See…
We study the isotonic regression estimator over a general countable pre-ordered set. We obtain the limiting distribution of the estimator and study its properties. It is proved that, under some general assumptions, the limiting distribution of the isotonized estimator is given by the concatenation of the separate isotonic regressions of the certain subvectors of an unrestrecred estimator's asymptotic distribution. Also, we show that the isotonization preserves the rate of convergence of the underlying estimator. We apply these results to the problems of estimation of a bimonotone regression fu…
We study the least square estimator, in the framework of simple linear regression, when the deviance term $\varepsilon$ with respect to the linear model is modeled by a uniform distribution. In particular, we give the law of this estimator, and prove some convergence properties.
This paper concerns the estimation of the regression function at a given point in nonparametric heteroscedastic models with Gaussian noise or with noise having unknown distribution. In the two cases an asymptotically efficient kernel estimator is constructed for the minimax absolute error risk.
Consider a linear regression model. Fan and Li (2001) describe the smoothly clipped absolute deviation (SCAD) point estimator of the regression parameter vector. To gain insight into the properties of this estimator, they consider an orthonormal design matrix and focus on the estimation of a specified component of this vector. They show that the SCAD point estimator has three attractive properties. We answer the question: To what extent can an interval estimator, centred on the SCAD estimator, have similar attractive properties?
We study asymptotic behavior of one-step $M$-estimators based on samples from arrays of not necessarily identically distributed random variables and representing explicit approximations to the corresponding consistent $M$-estimators. These estimators generalize Fisher's one-step approximations to consistent maximum likelihood estimators. As a consequence, we consider some nonlinear regression problems where the procedure mentioned allow us to construct explicit asymptotically optimal estimators. We also consider the problem of constructing initial estimators which are needed for one-step estim…
Penalized regression estimators are a popular tool for the analysis of sparse and high-dimensional data sets. However, penalized regression estimators defined using an unbounded loss function can be very sensitive to the presence of outlying observations, especially high leverage outliers. Moreover, it can be particularly challenging to detect outliers in high-dimensional data sets. Thus, robust estimators for sparse and high-dimensional linear regression models are in need. In this paper, we study the robust and asymptotic properties of MM-Bridge and adaptive MM-Bridge estimators: $\ell_q$-pe…
It is known that when the multicollinearity exists in the logistic regression model, variance of maximum likelihood estimator is unstable. As a remedy, in the context of biased shrinkage ridge estimation, Chang (2015) introduced an almost unbiased Liu estimator in the logistic regression model. Making use of his approach, when some prior knowledge in the form of linear restrictions are also available, we introduce a restricted almost unbiased Liu estimator in the logistic regression model. Statistical properties of this newly defined estimator are derived and some comparison result are also pr…
In this paper, we prove large deviations principle for the Nadaraya-Watson estimator and for the semi-recursive kernel estimator of the regression in the multidimensional case. Under suitable conditions, we show that the rate function is a good rate function. We thus generalize the results already obtained in the unidimensional case for the Nadaraya-Watson estimator. Moreover, we give a moderate deviations principle for these two estimators. It turns out that the rate function obtained in the moderate deviations principle for the semi-recursive estimator is larger than the one obtained for the…
Nonparametric density and regression estimators commonly depend on a bandwidth. The asymptotic properties of these estimators have been widely studied when bandwidths are nonstochastic. In practice, however, in order to improve finite sample performance of these estimators, bandwidths are selected by data driven methods, such as cross-validation or plug-in procedures. As a result nonparametric estimators are usually constructed using stochastic bandwidths. In this paper we establish the asymptotic equivalence in probability of local polynomial regression estimators under stochastic and nonstoc…
Quantile regression predicts the $τ$-quantile of the conditional distribution of a response variable given the explanatory variable for $τ\in(0,1)$. The aim of this paper is to establish the asymptotic distribution of the quantile estimator obtained by penalized spline method. A simulation and an exploration of real data are performed to validate our results.
General depth weighted scatter estimators are introduced and investigated. For general depth functions, we find out that these affine equivariant scatter estimators are Fisher consistent and unbiased for a wide range of multivariate distributions, and show that the sample scatter estimators are strong and \sqrtn-consistent and asymptotically normal, and the influence functions of the estimators exist and are bounded in general. We then concentrate on a specific case of the general depth weighted scatter estimators, the projection depth weighted scatter estimators, which include as a special ca…
The main Theorem of Jain et al.[Jain, K., Singh, S., and Sharma, S. (2011), Re- stricted estimation in multivariate measurement error regression model; JMVA, 102, 2, 264-280] is established in its full generality. Namely, we derive the joint asymp- totic normality of the unrestricted estimator (UE) and the restricted estimators of the matrix of the regression coefficients. The derived result holds under the hypothesized restriction as well as under the sequence of alternative restrictions. In addition, we establish Asymptotic Distributional Risk for the estimators and compare their relative pe…
We propose a class of weighted least squares estimators for the tail index of a distribution function with a regularly varying upper tail. Our approach is based on the method developed by \cite{Holan2010} for the Parzen tail index. Asymptotic normality of the estimators is proved. Through a simulation study, these and earlier estimators are compared in the Pareto and Hall models using the mean squared error as criterion. The results show that the weighted least squares estimator is better than the other estimators investigated.
In this article, basing on NQD samples, we investigate the fixed design nonparametric regression model, where the errors are pairwise NQD random errors, with fixed design points, and an unknown function. Nonparametric weighted estimator will be introduced and its consistency is studied. As special case, the consistency result for weighted kernel estimators of the model is obtained. This extends the earlier work on independent random and dependent random errors to NQD case.
The multivariate errors-in-variables regression model is applicable when both dependent and independent variables in a multivariate regression are subject to measurement errors. In such a scenario it is long established that the traditional least squares approach to estimating the model parameters is biased and inconsistent. The generalized least squares, ordinary least squares and maximum likelihood estimators (under the assumption of Gaussian errors) were derived in the seminal paper of Gleser (1981). However, the ordinary least squares and maximum likelihood estimators for the mean vectors …
Under a partially linear models we study a family of robust estimates for the regression parameter and the regression function when some of the predictor variables take values on a Riemannian manifold. We obtain the consistency and the asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators. Also, we consider a robust cross validation procedure to select the smoothing parameter. Simulations and application to real data show the performance of our proposal under small samples and contamination.
In this article, we consider an imputation method to handle missing response values based on semiparametric quantile regression estimation. In the proposed method, the missing response values are generated using the estimated conditional quantile regression function at given values of covariates. We adopt the generalized method of moments for estimation of parameters defined through a general estimation equation. We demonstrate that the proposed estimator, which combines both semiparametric quantile regression imputation and generalized method of moments, has competitive edge against some of t…
In this paper the asymptotic distribution of estimators is derived in a general regression setting where rank restrictions on a submatrix of the coefficient matrix are imposed and the regressors can include stationary or I(1) processes. Such a setting occurs e.g. in factor models. Rates of convergence are derived and the asymptotic distribution is given for least squares estimators as well as fully-modified estimators. The gains in imposing the rank restrictions are investigated. A number of special cases are discussed including the Johansen results in the case of cointegrated VAR(p) processes…
In a pioneer work, Révész (1973) introduces the stochastic approximation method to build up a recursive kernel estimator of the regression function $x\mapsto E(Y|X=x)$. However, according to Révész (1977), his estimator has two main drawbacks: on the one hand, its convergence rate is smaller than that of the nonrecursive Nadaraya-Watson's kernel regression estimator, and, on the other hand, the required assumptions on the density of the random variable $X$ are stronger than those usually needed in the framework of regression estimation. We first come back on the study of the convergence rate o…
In this paper we propose an automatic selection of the bandwidth of the semi-recursive kernel estimators of a regression function defined by the stochastic approximation algorithm. We showed that, using the selected bandwidth and some special stepsizes, the proposed semi-recursive estimators will be very competitive to the nonrecursive one in terms of estimation error but much better in terms of computational costs. We corroborated these theoretical results through simulation study and a real dataset.
Estimation of the tail index of heavy-tailed distributions and its applications are essential in many research areas. We propose a class of weighted least squares (WLS) estimators for the Parzen tail index. Our approach is based on the method developed by \cite{Holan2010}. We investigate consistency and asymptotic normality of the WLS estimators. Through a simulation study, we make a comparison with the Hill, Pickands, DEdH (Dekkers, Einmahl and de Haan) and ordinary least squares (OLS) estimators using the mean square error as criterion. The results show that in a restricted model some member…
We study weighted M-estimators for $\mathbb{R}^d$-valued clustered data and give sufficient conditions for their consistency. Their asymptotic normality is established with estimation of the asymptotic covariance matrix. We address the robustness of these estimators in terms of their breakdown point. Comparison with the unweighted case is performed with some numerical studies. They highlight that optimal weights maximizing the relative efficiency have a bad impact on the breakdown point.
We propose new model selection criteria based on generalized ridge estimators dominating the maximum likelihood estimator under the squared risk and the Kullback-Leibler risk in multivariate linear regression. Our model selection criteria have the following favorite properties: consistency, unbiasedness, uniformly minimum variance. Consistency is proven under an asymptotic structure $\frac{p}{n}\to c$ where $n$ is the sample size and $p$ is the parameter dimension of the response variables. In particular, our proposed class of estimators dominates the maximum likelihood estimator under the squ…
We propose a censored quantile regression estimator motivated by unbiased estimating equations. Under the usual conditional independence assumption of the survival time and the censoring time given the covariates, we show that the proposed estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. We develop an efficient computational algorithm which uses existing quantile regression code. As a result, bootstrap-type inference can be efficiently implemented. We illustrate the finite-sample performance of the proposed method by simulation studies and analysis of a survival data set.
In this paper, we propose a new semiparametric regression estimator by using a hybrid technique of a parametric approach and a nonparametric penalized spline method. The overall shape of the true regression function is captured by the parametric part, while its residual is consistently estimated by the nonparametric part. Asymptotic theory for the proposed semiparametric estimator is developed, showing that its behavior is dependent on the asymptotics for the nonparametric penalized spline estimator as well as on the discrepancy between the true regression function and the parametric part. As …
In this paper, we consider the situation in which the observations follow an isotonic generalized partly linear model. Under this model, the mean of the responses is modelled, through a link function, linearly on some covariates and nonparametrically on an univariate regressor in such a way that the nonparametric component is assumed to be a monotone function. A class of robust estimates for the monotone nonparametric component and for the regression parameter, related to the linear one, is defined. The robust estimators are based on a spline approach combined with a score function which bound…
This paper considers distributed M-estimation under heterogeneous distributions among distributed data blocks. A weighted distributed estimator is proposed to improve the efficiency of the standard "Split-And-Conquer" (SaC) estimator for the common parameter shared by all the data blocks. The weighted distributed estimator is shown to be at least as efficient as the would-be full sample and the generalized method of moment estimators with the latter two estimators requiring full data access. A bias reduction is formulated to the WD estimator to accommodate much larger numbers of data blocks th…
In cluster-specific studies, ordinary logistic regression and conditional logistic regression for binary outcomes provide maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and conditional maximum likelihood estimator (CMLE), respectively. In this paper, we show that CMLE is approaching to MLE asymptotically when each individual data point is replicated infinitely many times. Our theoretical derivation is based on the observation that a term appearing in the conditional average log-likelihood function is the coefficient of a polynomial, and hence can be transformed to a complex integral by Cauchy's differenti…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the Nadaraya-Watson estimator for the estimation of the regression function in a semiparametric regression model. On the one hand, we make use of the recursive version of the sliced inverse regression method for the estimation of the unknown parameter of the model. On the other hand, we implement a recursive Nadaraya-Watson procedure for the estimation of the regression function which takes into account the previous estimation of the parameter of the semiparametric regression model. We establish the almost sure convergence as well as the asymptotic nor…
In a classical regression model, it is usually assumed that the explanatory variables are independent of each other and error terms are normally distributed. But when these assumptions are not met, situations like the error terms are not independent or they are not identically distributed or both of these, LSE will not be robust. Hence, quantile regression has been used to complement this deficiency of classical regression analysis and to improve the least square estimation (LSE). In this study, we consider preliminary test and shrinkage estimation strategies for quantile regression models wit…
Estimating the effective dimension reduction (EDR) space, related to the semiparametric regression model introduced by Li \cite{sir}, is based on the estimation of the covariance matrix $Λ$ of the conditional expectation of the vector of predictors given the response. An estimator $\widehatΛ_n$ of $Λ$ based on kernel method was introduced by Zhu and Fang \cite{Asymptotics} who then derived, under some conditions, the asymptotic distribution of $\sqrt{n}\left(\widehatΛ_n-Λ\right)$, as $n\rightarrow +\infty$. In this paper, we obtain, under specified conditions, the almost sure convergence of $\…
The paper continues the authors' work on the adaptive Wynn algorithm in a nonlinear regression model. In the present paper it is shown that if the mean response function satisfies a condition of `saturated identifiability', which was introduced by Pronzato \cite{Pronzato}, then the adaptive least squares estimators are strongly consistent. The condition states that the regression parameter is identifiable under any saturated design, i.e., the values of the mean response function at any $p$ distinct design points determine the parameter point uniquely where, typically, $p$ is the dimension of t…
Stochastic simulators such as Monte-Carlo estimators are widely used in science and engineering to study physical systems through their probabilistic representation. Global sensitivity analysis aims to identify the input parameters which have the most important impact on the output. A popular tool to perform global sensitivity analysis is the variance-based method which comes from the Hoeffding-Sobol decomposition. Nevertheless, this method requires an important number of simulations and is often unfeasible under reasonable time constraint. Therefore, an approximation of the input/output relat…
In this paper we propose a family of robust estimates for isotonic regression: isotonic M-estimators. We show that their asymptotic distribution is, up to an scalar factor, the same as that of Brunk's classical isotonic estimator. We also derive the influence function and the breakdown point of these estimates. Finally we perform a Monte Carlo study that shows that the proposed family includes estimators that are simultaneously highly efficient under gaussian errors and highly robust when the error distribution has heavy tails.
A continuous-time nonlinear regression model with Lévy-driven linear noise process is considered. Sufficient conditions of consistency and asymptotic normality of the Whittle estimator for the parameter of the noise spectral density are obtained in the paper.
New local linear estimators are proposed for a wide class of nonparametric regression models. The estimators are uniformly consistent regardless of satisfying traditional conditions of depen\-dence of design elements. The estimators are the solutions of a specially weighted least-squares method. The design can be fixed or random and does not need to meet classical regularity or independence conditions. As an application, several estimators are constructed for the mean of dense functional data. The theoretical results of the study are illustrated by simulations. An example of processing real me…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic normality of the conditional maximum likelihood (ML) estimators for the truncated regression model and the Tobit model. We show that under the general setting assumed in his book, the conjectures made by Hayashi (2000) \footnote{see page 516, and page 520 of Hayashi (2000).} about the asymptotic normality of the conditional ML estimators for both models are true, namely, a sufficient condition is the nonsingularity of $\mathbf{x_tx'_t}$.
In this article, we propose the Sample Information Optimal Estimator (SIOE) and the Stochastic Restricted Optimal Estimator (SROE) for misspecified linear regression model when multicollinearity exists among explanatory variables. Further, we obtain the superiority conditions of proposed estimators over some other existing estimators in the Mean Square Error Matrix (MSEM) criterion in a standard form which can apply to all estimators considered in this study. Finally, a real world example and a Monte Carlo simulation study are presented for the proposed estimators to illustrate the theoretical…
In this paper, based on the kernel estimator proposed by Ould-Said and Lemdani (Ann. Instit. Statist. Math. 2006), we develop some new generalized M-estimator procedures for single index regression models with left-truncated responses. The consistency and asymptotic normality of our estimators are also established. Some simulation studies are given to investigate the finite sample performance of the proposed estimators.
This article studies a trimmed version of the Nadaraya-Watson estimator to estimate the unknown non-parametric regression function. The characterization of the estimator through minimization problem is established, and its pointwise asymptotic distribution is also derived. The robustness property of the proposed estimator is also studied through breakdown point. Besides, the asymptotic efficiency study along with an extensive simulation study shows that this estimator performs well for various cases. The practicability of the estimator is shown for three benchmark real data as well.
This paper explores Maximum Likelihood in parametric models in the context of Sanov type Large Deviation Probabilities. MLE in parametric models under weighted sampling is shown to be associated with the minimization of a specific divergence criterion defined with respect to the distribution of the weights. Some properties of the resulting inferential procedure are presented; Bahadur efficiency of tests are also considered in this context.
In linear models, the generalized least squares (GLS) estimator is applicable when the structure of the error dependence is known. When it is unknown, such structure must be approximated and estimated in a manner that may lead to misspecification. The large-sample analysis of incorrectly-specified GLS (IGLS) estimators requires careful asymptotic manipulations. When performing estimation in the frequency domain, the asymptotic normality of the IGLS estimator, under the so-called Grenander assumptions, has been proved for a broad class of error dependence models. Under the same assumptions, asy…
In this article we study the asymptotic behaviour of the least square estimator in a linear regression model based on random observation instances. We provide mild assumptions on the moments and dependence structure on the randomly spaced observations and the residuals under which the estimator is strongly consistent. In particular, we consider observation instances that are negatively superadditive dependent within each other, while for the residuals we merely assume that they are generated by some continuous function. In addition, we prove that the rate of convergence is proportional to the …
In this paper we propose and study a version of the Dyadic Classification and Regression Trees (DCART) estimator from Donoho (1997) for (fixed design) quantile regression in general dimensions. We refer to this proposed estimator as the QDCART estimator. Just like the mean regression version, we show that a) a fast dynamic programming based algorithm with computational complexity $O(N \log N)$ exists for computing the QDCART estimator and b) an oracle risk bound (trading off squared error and a complexity parameter of the true signal) holds for the QDCART estimator. This oracle risk bound then…
This paper studies the statistical properties of the group Lasso estimator for high dimensional sparse quantile regression models where the number of explanatory variables (or the number of groups of explanatory variables) is possibly much larger than the sample size while the number of variables in "active" groups is sufficiently small. We establish a non-asymptotic bound on the $\ell_{2}$-estimation error of the estimator. This bound explains situations under which the group Lasso estimator is potentially superior/inferior to the $\ell_{1}$-penalized quantile regression estimator in terms of…
Consider a random vector (X, T), where X is d-dimensional and T is one-dimensional. We suppose that the random variable T is subject to random right censoring and satisfies the $α$-mixing property. The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of the kernel estimator of the relative error regression and to establish its uniform almost sure consistency with rate. Furthermore, we have highlighted the covariance term which measures the dependency. The simulation study shows that the proposed estimator performs well for a finite sample size in different cases.

Analyzing polytomous response from a complex survey scheme, like stratified or cluster sampling is very crucial in several socio-economics applications. We present a class of minimum quasi weighted density power divergence estimators for the polytomous logistic regression model with such a complex survey. This family of semiparametric estimators is a robust generalization of the maximum quasi weighted likelihood estimator exploiting the advantages of the popular density power divergence measure. Accordingly robust estimators for the design effects are also derived. Robust testing of general li…
