We establish asymptotic normality for estimators of the additive regression components under random censorship. To build our estimators, we couple the marginal integration method (Newey (1994)) with an initial Inverse Probability of Censoring Weighted estimator of the multivariate censored regression function introduced by Carbonez et al. (1995) and Kohler et al. (2002). Asymptotic confidence bands are derived from our result.
We revisit the estimation of the extreme value index for randomly censored data from a heavy tailed distribution. We introduce a new class of estimators which encompasses earlier proposals given in Worms and Worms (2014) and Beirlant et al. (2018), which were shown to have good bias properties compared with the pseudo maximum likelihood estimator proposed in Beirlant et al. (2007) and Einmahl et al. (2008). However the asymptotic normality of the type of estimators first proposed in Worms and Worms (2014) was still lacking, in the random threshold case. We derive an asymptotic representation a…
In multivariate regression estimation, the rate of convergence depends on the dimension of the regressor. This fact, known as the curse of the dimensionality, motivated several works. The additive model, introduced by Stone (10), offers an efficient response to this problem. In the setting of continuous time processes, using the marginal integration method, we obtain the quadratic convergence rate and the asymptotic normality of the components of the additive model.
On the basis of Nelson-Aalen nonparametric estimator of the cumulative distribution function, we provide a weak approximation to tail product-limit process for randomly right-censored heavy-tailed data. In this context, a new consistent reduced-bias estimator of the extreme value index is introduced and its asymptotic normality is established only by assuming the second-order regular variation of the underlying distribution function. A simulation study shows that the newly proposed estimator performs better than the existing ones.
In this paper, we are concerned with nonparametric estimation of the multivariate regression function in the presence of right censored data. More precisely, we propose a statistic that is shown to be asymptotically normally distributed under the additive assumption, and that could be used to test for additivity in the censored regression setting.
This paper discusses asymptotic theory for penalized spline estimators in generalized additive models. The purpose of this paper is to establish the asymptotic bias and variance as well as the asymptotic normality of the penalized spline estimators proposed by Marx and Eilers (1998). Furthermore, the asymptotics for the penalized quasi likelihood fit in mixed models are also discussed.
The central limit theorem introduced by Stute [The central limit theorem under random censorship. Ann. Statist. 1995; 23: 422-439] does not hold for some class of heavy-tailed distributions. In this paper, we make use of the extreme value theory to propose an alternative estimating approach of the mean ensuring the asymptotic normality property. A simulation study is carried out to evaluate the performance of this estimation procedure
This paper is concerned with asymptotic theory for penalized spline estimator in bivariate additive model. The focus of this paper is put upon the penalized spline estimator obtained by the backfitting algorithm. The convergence of the algorithm as well as the uniqueness of its solution are shown. The asymptotic bias and variance of penalized spline estimator are derived by an efficient use of the asymptotic results for the penalized spline estimator in marginal univariate model. Asymptotic normality of estimator is also developed, by which an approximate confidence interval can be obtained. S…
Additive models and generalized additive models are effective semiparametric tools for multidimensional data. In this article we propose an online smoothing backfitting method for generalized additive models with local polynomial smoothers. The main idea is to use a second order expansion to approximate the nonlinear integral equations to maximize the local quasilikelihood and store the coefficients as the sufficient statistics which can be updated in an online manner by a dynamic candidate bandwidth method. The updating procedure only depends on the stored sufficient statistics and the curren…
We investigate the estimation of the extreme value index when the data are subject to random censorship. We prove, in a unified way, detailed asymptotic normality results for various estimators of the extreme value index and use these estimators as the main building block for estimators of extreme quantiles. We illustrate the quality of these methods by a small simulation study and apply the estimators to medical data.
In this study, we develop an asymptotic theory of nonparametric regression for locally stationary random fields (LSRFs) $\{{\bf X}_{{\bf s}, A_{n}}: {\bf s} \in R_{n} \}$ in $\mathbb{R}^{p}$ observed at irregularly spaced locations in $R_{n} =[0,A_{n}]^{d} \subset \mathbb{R}^{d}$. We first derive the uniform convergence rate of general kernel estimators, followed by the asymptotic normality of an estimator for the mean function of the model. Moreover, we consider additive models to avoid the curse of dimensionality arising from the dependence of the convergence rate of estimators on the number…
A parameter estimation problem is considered for a diagonaliazable stochastic evolution equation using a finite number of the Fourier coefficients of the solution. The equation is driven by additive noise that is white in space and fractional in time with the Hurst parameter $H\geq 1/2$. The objective is to study asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator as the number of the Fourier coefficients increases. A necessary and sufficient condition for consistency and asymptotic normality is presented in terms of the eigenvalues of the operators in the equation.
In this article, we consider flexible seasonal time series models which consist of a common trend function over periods and additive individual trend (seasonal effect) functions. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the local linear estimators were obtained under the $α$-mixing conditions and without specifying the error distribution. We develop these results to consistency and asymptotic normality of local linear estimates by using central limit theorems for flexible seasonal time series model, which error terms are $k$-weak dependent and $λ$-weak dependent random variables.
An additive growth curve model with orthogonal design matrices is proposed in which observations may have different profile forms. The proposed model allows us to fit data and then estimate parameters in a more parsimonious way than the traditional growth curve model. Two-stage generalized least-squares estimators for the regression coefficients are derived where a quadratic estimator for the covariance of observations is taken as the first-stage estimator. Consistency, asymptotic normality and asymptotic independence of these estimators are investigated. Simulation studies and a numerical exa…
In this paper we study the problem of estimating the drift/viscosity coefficient for a large class of linear, parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by an additive space-time noise. We propose a new class of estimators, called trajectory fitting estimators (TFEs). The estimators are constructed by fitting the observed trajectory with an artificial one, and can be viewed as an analog to the classical least squares estimators from the time-series analysis. As in the existing literature on statistical inference for SPDEs, we take a spectral approach, and assume that we…
Additive models play an essential role in studying non-linear relationships. Despite many recent advances in estimation, there is a lack of methods and theories for inference in high-dimensional additive models, including confidence interval construction and hypothesis testing. Motivated by inference for non-linear treatment effects, we consider the high-dimensional additive model and make inference for the derivative of the function of interest. We propose a novel decorrelated local linear estimator and establish its asymptotic normality. The main novelty is the construction of the decorrelat…
This paper, investigates the conditional quantile estimation of a scalar random response and a functional random covariate (i.e. valued in some infinite-dimensional space) whenever {\it functional stationary ergodic data with random censorship} are considered. We introduce a kernel type estimator of the conditional quantile function. We establish the strong consistency with rate of this estimator as well as the asymptotic normality which induces a confidence interval that is usable in practice since it does not depend on any unknown quantity. An application to electricity peak demand interval …
The definition of spacings associated to a sequence of random variables is extended to the case of random vectors in [0,1]^2. Beirlant & al. (1991) give an alternative proof of the Le Cam (1958) theorem concerning asymptotic normality of additive functions of uniform spacings in [0,1]. I adapt their technique to the two-dimensional case, leading the way to new directions in the domain of Complete Spatial Randomness (CSR) testing.
A tail empirical process for heavy-tailed and right-censored data is introduced and its Gaussian approximation is established. In this context, a (weighted) new Hill-type estimator for positive extreme value index is proposed and its consistency and asymptotic normality are proved by means of the aforementioned process in the framework of second-order conditions of regular variation. In a comparative simulation study, the newly defined estimator is seen to perform better than the already existing ones in terms of both bias and mean squared error. As a real data example, we apply our estimation…
We introduce a covariate-specific total variation penalty in two semiparametric models for the rate function of recurrent event process. The two models are a stratified Cox model, introduced in Prentice et al. (1981), and a stratified Aalen's additive model. We show the consistency and asymptotic normality of our penalized estimators. We demonstrate, through a simulation study, that our estimators outperform classical estimators for small to moderate sample sizes. Finally an application to the bladder tumour data of Byar (1980) is presented.
We propose generalized additive partial linear models for complex data which allow one to capture nonlinear patterns of some covariates, in the presence of linear components. The proposed method improves estimation efficiency and increases statistical power for correlated data through incorporating the correlation information. A unique feature of the proposed method is its capability of handling model selection in cases where it is difficult to specify the likelihood function. We derive the quadratic inference function-based estimators for the linear coefficients and the nonparametric function…
We consider the problem of estimating an additive regression function in an inverse regres- sion model with a convolution type operator. A smooth backfitting procedure is developed and asymptotic normality of the resulting estimator is established. Compared to other meth- ods for the estimation in additive models the new approach neither requires observations on a regular grid nor the estimation of the joint density of the predictor. It is also demonstrated by means of a simulation study that the backfitting estimator outperforms the marginal in- tegration method at least by a factor two with …
Performance guarantees for compression in nonlinear models under non-Gaussian observations can be achieved through the use of distributional characteristics that are sensitive to the distance to normality, and which in particular return the value of zero under Gaussian or linear sensing. The use of these characteristics, or discrepancies, improves some previous results in this area by relaxing conditions and tightening performance bounds. In addition, these characteristics are tractable to compute when Gaussian sensing is corrupted by either additive errors or mixing.
We consider a parameter estimation problem to determine the viscosity $ν$ of a stochastically perturbed 2D Navier-Stokes system. We derive several different classes of estimators based on the first $N$ Fourier modes of a single sample path observed on a finite time interval. We study the consistency and asymptotic normality of these estimators. Our analysis treats strong, pathwise solutions for both the periodic and bounded domain cases in the presence of an additive white (in time) noise.
We study theoretical properties of regularized robust M-estimators, applicable when data are drawn from a sparse high-dimensional linear model and contaminated by heavy-tailed distributions and/or outliers in the additive errors and covariates. We first establish a form of local statistical consistency for the penalized regression estimators under fairly mild conditions on the error distribution: When the derivative of the loss function is bounded and satisfies a local restricted curvature condition, all stationary points within a constant radius of the true regression vector converge at the m…
Semiparametric regression offers a flexible framework for modeling non-linear relationships between a response and covariates. A prime example are generalized additive models where splines (say) are used to approximate non-linear functional components in conjunction with a quadratic penalty to control for overfitting. Estimation and inference are then generally performed based on the penalized likelihood, or under a mixed model framework. The penalized likelihood framework is fast but potentially unstable, and choosing the smoothing parameters needs to be done externally using cross-validation…

We propose a statistical inference framework for the component-wise functional gradient descent algorithm (CFGD) under normality assumption for model errors, also known as $L_2$-Boosting. The CFGD is one of the most versatile tools to analyze data, because it scales well to high-dimensional data sets, allows for a very flexible definition of additive regression models and incorporates inbuilt variable selection. Due to the variable selection, we build on recent proposals for post-selection inference. However, the iterative nature of component-wise boosting, which can repeatedly select the same…
In this paper, we develop a new censored quantile instrumental variable (CQIV) estimator and describe its properties and computation. The CQIV estimator combines Powell (1986) censored quantile regression (CQR) to deal with censoring, with a control variable approach to incorporate endogenous regressors. The CQIV estimator is obtained in two stages that are non-additive in the unobservables. The first stage estimates a non-additive model with infinite dimensional parameters for the control variable, such as a quantile or distribution regression model. The second stage estimates a non-additive …
The additive partially linear model (APLM) combines the flexibility of nonparametric regression with the parsimony of regression models, and has been widely used as a popular tool in multivariate nonparametric regression to alleviate the "curse of dimensionality". A natural question raised in practice is the choice of structure in the nonparametric part, that is, whether the continuous covariates enter into the model in linear or nonparametric form. In this paper, we present a comprehensive framework for simultaneous sparse model identification and learning for ultra-high-dimensional APLMs whe…
The aim of this paper is to study the asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the drift coefficient for fractional stochastic heat equation driven by an additive space-time noise. We consider the traditional for stochastic partial differential equations statistical experiment when the measurements are performed in the spectral domain, and in contrast to the existing literature, we study the asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood (type) estimators (MLE) when both, the number of Fourier modes and the time go to infinity. In the first part of the paper we consi…
We propose a vector generalized additive modeling framework for taking into account the effect of covariates on angular density functions in a multivariate extreme value context. The proposed methods are tailored for settings where the dependence between extreme values may change according to covariates. We devise a maximum penalized log-likelihood estimator, discuss details of the estimation procedure, and derive its consistency and asymptotic normality. The simulation study suggests that the proposed methods perform well in a wealth of simulation scenarios by accurately recovering the true c…
Let $ (T_i)_i$ be a sequence of independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) random variables (r.v.) of interest distributed as $ T$ and $(X_i)_i$ be a corresponding vector of covariates taking values on $ \mathbb{R}^d$. In censorship models the r.v. $T$ is subject to random censoring by another r.v. $C$. In this paper we built a new kernel estimator based on the so-called synthetic data of the mean squared relative error for the regression function. We establish the uniform almost sure convergence with rate over a compact set and its asymptotic normality. The asymptotic variance is explicitly…
We study generalized additive partial linear models, proposing the use of polynomial spline smoothing for estimation of nonparametric functions, and deriving quasi-likelihood based estimators for the linear parameters. We establish asymptotic normality for the estimators of the parametric components. The procedure avoids solving large systems of equations as in kernel-based procedures and thus results in gains in computational simplicity. We further develop a class of variable selection procedures for the linear parameters by employing a nonconcave penalized quasi-likelihood, which is shown to…

Maximum likelihood estimation in logistic regression with mixed effects is known to often result in estimates on the boundary of the parameter space. Such estimates, which include infinite values for fixed effects and singular or infinite variance components, can cause havoc to numerical estimation procedures and inference. We introduce an appropriately scaled additive penalty to the log-likelihood function, or an approximation thereof, which penalizes the fixed effects by the Jeffreys' invariant prior for the model with no random effects and the variance components by a composition of negativ…
A new robust and statistically efficient estimator for ARMA models called the bounded influence propagation (BIP) τ-estimator is proposed. The estimator incorporates an auxiliary model, which prevents the propagation of outliers. Strong consistency and asymptotic normality of the estimator for ARMA models that are driven by independently and identically distributed (iid) innovations with symmetric distributions are established. To analyze the infinitesimal effect of outliers on the estimator, the influence function is derived and computed explicitly for an AR(1) model with additive outliers. T…
Few methods in Bayesian non-parametric statistics/ machine learning have received as much attention as Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART). While BART is now routinely performed for prediction tasks, its theoretical properties began to be understood only very recently. In this work, we continue the theoretical investigation of BART initiated by Rockova and van der Pas (2017). In particular, we study the Bernstein-von Mises (BvM) phenomenon (i.e. asymptotic normality) for smooth linear functionals of the regression surface within the framework of non-parametric regression with fixed covar…
We consider the problem of simultaneous variable selection and estimation in additive, partially linear models for longitudinal/clustered data. We propose an estimation procedure via polynomial splines to estimate the nonparametric components and apply proper penalty functions to achieve sparsity in the linear part. Under reasonable conditions, we obtain the asymptotic normality of the estimators for the linear components and the consistency of the estimators for the nonparametric components. We further demonstrate that, with proper choice of the regularization parameter, the penalized estimat…
