The C^r dependence problem of multiple Dirichlet eigenvalues on domains is discussed for elliptic operators by regarding smooth one-parameter families of C^1 perturbations of domains in R^n. As applications of our main theorem (Theorem 1), we provide a fairly complete description for all eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on disks and squares and also for its second eigenvalue on balls in R^n for any n >= 3. The central tool used in our proof is a degenerate implicit function theorem on Banach spaces of independent interest.
We obtain sharp lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of four types of eigenvalue problem defined by the bi-Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and determine all the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of a Wentzell-type bi-Laplace problem on Euclidean balls.
Here we prove an isoperimetric inequality for the harmonic mean of the first $N-1$ non-trivial Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for domains contained in a hemisphere of $\mathbb{S}^N$.
We study the behavior of the variational eigenvalues of the p-Laplace operator, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, when p is varying. After introducing an auxiliary problem, we characterize the continuity answering, in particular, a question raised in [Lindqvist, 1993].
We prove a sharp upper bound and a lower bound for the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Wentzell-Laplace operator on compact manifolds with boundary and an isoperimetric inequality for the same eigenvalue in the case where the manifold is a bounded domain in a Euclidean space. We study some fourth order Stekolv problems and obtain isoperimetric upper bound for the first eigenvalue of them. We also find all the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for two kind of fourth order Stekolv problems on a Euclidean ball.
In this paper, we analyze an eigenvalue problem for nonlinear elliptic operators involving homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a open smooth bounded domain. We prove bifurcation results from trivial solutions and from infinity for the considered nonlinear eigenvalue problem. We also show the existence of multiple solutions of the nonlinear problem using variational methods.
We study the Steklov eigenvalue problem for the $\infty-$orthotropic Laplace operator defined on convex sets of $\mathbb{R}^N$, with $N\geq2$, considering the limit for $p\to+\infty$ of the Steklov problem for the $p-$orthotropic Laplacian. We find a limit problem that is satisfied in the viscosity sense and a geometric characterization of the first non trivial eigenvalue. Moreover, we prove Brock-Weinstock and Weinstock type inequalities among convex sets, stating that the ball in a suitable norm maximizes the first non trivial eigenvalue for the Steklov $\infty-$orthotropic Laplacian, once w…
In this paper we obtain lower estimates of the first non-trivial eigenvalues of the degenerate $p$-Laplace operator, $p>2$, in a large class of non-convex domains. This study is based on applications of the geometric theory of composition operators on Sobolev spaces that permits us to estimates constants of Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities and as an application to derive lower estimates of the first non-trivial eigenvalues for the Alhfors domains (i.e. to quasidiscs). This class of domains includes some snowflakes type domains with fractal boundaries.
We consider perturbed eigenvalue problems of the 1-Laplace operator and verify the existence of a sequence of solutions. It is shown that the eigenvalues of the perturbed problem converge to the corresponding eigenvalue of the unperturbed problem as the perturbation becomes small. The results rely on nonsmooth critical point theory based on the weak slope.
The paper is pertaining to the spectral theory of operators and boundary value problems for differential equations on manifolds. Eigenvalues of such problems are studied as functionals on the space of domains. Resolvent continuity of the corresponding operators is established under domain deformation and estimates of continuity moduli of their eigenvalues $\slash$ eigenfunctions are obtained provided the boundary of nonperturbed domain is locally represented as a graph of some continuous function and domain deformation is measured with respect to the Hausdorff--Pompeiu metric.
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a flat disc than on any other surface of revoltuion immersed in Euclidean space with the same boundary.
We prove existence and regularity results for the problem of maximization of one Laplace eigenvalue with respect to metrics of same volume lying in a conformal class of a Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$.
We prove that in many cases the existence of an extremal metric for some Laplace eigenvalue in a conformal class allows to find extremal metrics in conformal classes close by. As a consequence and as part of the arguments we obtain perturbed harmonic maps with constant density.
In this short note, we prove that conformal classes which are small perturbations of a product conformal class on a product with a standard sphere admit a metric extremal for some Laplace eigenvalue. As part of the arguments we obtain perturbed harmonic maps with constant density.
In this article we will explore Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls on spherically symmetric manifolds. We will compare any Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue with the corresponding Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue on balls in Euclidean space with the same radius. As a special case we will show that the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls with small radius on the sphere are smaller than the corresponding eigenvalues on the Euclidean ball with the same radius. While the opposite is true for the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues of hyperbolic spaces.
We significantly expand the number of functions whose image under the fractional Laplace operator can be computed explicitly. In particular, we show that the fractional Laplace operator maps Meijer G-functions of |x|^2, or generalized hypergeometric functions of -|x|^2, multiplied by a solid harmonic polynomial, into the same class of functions. As one important application of this result, we produce a complete system of eigenfunctions of the operator (1-|x|^2)_+^{alpha/2} (-Delta)^{alpha/2} with the Dirichlet boundary conditions outside of the unit ball. The latter result will be used to esti…
The Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on an annulus than on any other surface of revolution in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the same boundary. This is established by defining a sequence of shrinking cylinders about the axis of symmetry and proving that flattening a surface outside of each cylinder successively increases the eigenvalues. A similar argument shows that the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are larger on a half-helicoid than on any other screw surface in $\mathbb{R}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$ with the same boundary.
We consider the problem of maximizing the first eigenvalue of the $p$-laplacian (possibly with non-constant coefficients) over a fixed domain $Ω$, with Dirichlet conditions along $\partialΩ$ and along a supplementary set $Σ$, which is the unknown of the optimization problem. The set $Σ$, that plays the role of a supplementary stiffening rib for a membrane $Ω$, is a compact connected set (e.g. a curve or a connected system of curves) that can be placed anywhere in $\overlineΩ$, and is subject to the constraint of an upper bound $L$ to its total length (one-dimensional Hausdorff measure). This u…
In this paper, we consider the bifurcation problem for fractional Laplace equation \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{s} u = λu + f(λ,\,x,\,u)& \mbox{in }Ω, u = 0 &\mbox{in }\mathbb{R}^n\backslash Ω, \end{array} \end{eqnarray*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n,\,n> 2s (0<s<1)$ is an open bounded subset with smooth boundary, $(-Δ)^{s}$ stands for the fractional Laplacian. We show that a continuum of solutions bifurcates out from the principal eigenvalue $λ_1$ of the eigenvalue problem \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{gathered} (-Δ)^{s} v = λv\,\,\,\mbox{in}\,\,Ω, v = 0 \,\,\,\,\mbox{in}\,\,\,\,\math…
We study the p-Laplace equation in the plane and prove that the mean value property holds directly for the solutions themselves. This removes the need to interpret the formula in the viscosity sense via test functions. The method is based on the hodograph representation.
We describe a highly efficient numerical scheme for finding two-sided bounds for the eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace operator (-Delta)^{alpha/2} in the unit ball D in R^d, with a Dirichlet condition in the complement of D. The standard Rayleigh-Ritz variational method is used for the upper bounds, while the lower bounds involve the less-known Aronszajn method of intermediate problems. Both require explicit expressions for the fractional Laplace operator applied to a linearly dense set of functions in L^2(D). We use appropriate Jacobi-type orthogonal polynomials, which were studied in a c…
In 1961 G.Polya published a paper about the eigenvalues of vibrating membrane. The "free vibrating membrane"' corresponds to the Neumann-Laplace operator in bounded plane domains. In this paper we obtain estimates for the first eigenvalue of this operator in a large class of domains that we call as conformal regular domains, that includes convex domains, John domains etc... On the base of our estimates we conjecture that the eigenvalues of the Neumann-Laplace operator depend on the hyperbolic metrics of plane domains. We propose a new method for the estimates that is based on weighted Poincaré…
In this paper, we study properties of solutions of the Dominative $p$-Laplace equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded convex domain $Ω$. For the equation $-\mathcal{D}_p u= 1$, we show that $\sqrt{u}$ is concave, and for the eigenvalue problem $\mathcal{D}_p u + λu=0$, we show that $\log {u}$ is concave.
In this work we study the homogenization for eigenvalues of the fractional $p-$Laplace in a bounded domain both with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions. We obtain the convergence of eigenvalues and the explicit order of the convergence rates.
In this work we extend a recent result by Dyda et. al. [B. Dyda, A. Kuznetsov, M. Kwasnicki, Eigenvalues of the fractional Laplace equation in the unit ball, J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 95 (2017), 500-518.] to dimension 3.
This article deals with the existence and non-existence of positive solutions for the eigenvalue problem driven by nonhomogeneous fractional $p\& q$ Laplacian operator with indefinite weights $$\left(-Δ_p\right)^αu + \left(-Δ_q\right)^βu \,= λ\left[a(x) \left|u\right|^{p-2}u + b(x) \left|u\right|^{q-2}u \right]\quad\quad\textrm{in $Ø$},$$ where $Ø$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\R^N$ extended by zero outside. When $Ø=\R^N$ and $b\equiv0$, we further show that there exists a continuous family of the eigenvalue if $1<q<p<q^*_β=\frac{Nq}{N-qβ}$ and $0\leq a\in L^{\left(\frac{q_β^*}{s}\right)'}\l…
We show that eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold are approximated by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a (suitably weighted) graph Laplace operator of a proximity graph on an epsilon-net.
We consider an optimization problem for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on a hypersurface in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$, with $n \ge 2$. If $p \ge 2n-1$, then among hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ which are $O(n) \times O(n)$-invariant and have one fixed boundary component, there is a surface which maximizes the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian. This surface is either Simons' cone or a $C^1$ hypersurface, depending on $p$ and $n$. If $n$ is fixed and $p$ is large, then the maximizing surface is not Simons' cone. If $p=2$ and $n \le 5$, then Simons' cone does not ma…
We prove that quasi-concave positive solutions to a class of quasi-linear elliptic equations driven by the $p$-Laplacian in convex bounded domains of the plane have only one critical point. As a consequence, we obtain strict concavity results for suitable transformations of these solutions.
A short account of recent existence and multiplicity theorems on the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic equation with $(p,q)$-Laplacian in a bounded domain is performed. Both eigenvalue problems and different types of perturbation terms are briefly discussed. Special attention is paid to possibly coercive, resonant, subcritical, critical, or asymmetric right-hand sides.
In numerical existence proofs for solutions of the semi-linear elliptic system, evaluating the norm of the inverse of a perturbed Laplace operator plays an important role. We reveal an eigenvalue problem to design a method for verifying the invertibility of the operator and evaluating the norm of its inverse based on Liu's method and the Temple-Lehman-Goerisch method. We apply the inverse-norm's estimation to the Dirichlet boundary value problem of the Lotka-Volterra system with diffusion terms and confirm the efficacy of our method.
We prove stability estimates for the isoperimetric inequalities for the first and the second nonzero Laplace eigenvalues on surfaces, both globally and in a fixed conformal class. We employ the notion of eigenvalues of measures and show that if a normalized eigenvalue is close to its maximal value, the corresponding measure must be close in the Sobolev space $W^{-1,2}$ to the set of maximizing measures. In particular, this implies a qualitative stability result: metrics almost maximizing the normalized eigenvalue must be $W^{-1,2}$-close to a maximal metric. Following this approach, we prove s…
We associate a sequence of variational eigenvalues to any Radon measure on a compact Riemannian manifold. For particular choices of measures, we recover the Laplace, Steklov and other classical eigenvalue problems. In the first part of the paper we study the properties variational eigenvalues and establish a general continuity result, which shows for a sequence of measures converging in the dual of an appropriate Sobolev space, that the associated eigenvalues converge as well. The second part of the paper is devoted to various applications to shape optimization. The main theme is studying shar…
