We present the physical properties of [OIII] emission line galaxies at z>3 as the tracers of active galaxies at 1Gyr before the peak epoch at z~2. We have performed deep narrow-band imaging surveys in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field with MOIRCS on the Subaru Telescope and have constructed coherent samples of 34 [OIII] emitters at z=3.2 and 3.6, as well as 107 H$α$ emitters at z=2.2 and 2.5. We investigate their basic physical quantities, such as stellar masses, star formation rates (SFRs), and sizes using the publicly available multi-wavelength data and high resolution images by the Hubble Space Telescope. The stellar masses and SFRs show a clear correlation known as the "main sequence" of star-forming galaxies. It is found that the location of the main sequence of the [OIII] emitters at z=3.2 and 3.6 is almost identical to that of the H$α$ emitters at z=2.2 and 2.5. Also, we investigate their mass-size relation and find that the relation does not change between the two epochs. When we assume that the star-forming galaxies at z=3.2 grow simply along the same main sequence down to z=2.2, galaxies with $M_* = 10^{9}$-$10^{11} M_{\odot}$ increase their stellar masses significantly by a factor of 10-2. They climb up the main sequence, and their star formation rates also increase a lot as their stellar masses grow. This indicates that star formation activities of galaxies are accelerated from z>3 towards the peak epoch of galaxy formation at z~2.
In this letter, we checked spectral properties of the well-known narrow line Seyfert I Mrk142, in order to try to find effects of narrow line variability on BLR radius of Mrk142 which is an outlier in the R-L plane. Although, no improvement can be found on BLR radius, apparent narrow line variability can be confirmed in Mrk142. Using the public spectra collected from the Lick AGN Monitoring Project, the spectral scaling method based on assumption of constant \oiii line is firstly checked by examining broad and narrow emission line properties. We find that with the application of the spectral s…
In this manuscript, we proposed an interesting method to test the dual supermassive black hole model for AGN with double-peaked narrow \oiii lines (double-peaked narrow emitters), through their broad optical Balmer line properties. Under the dual supermassive black hole model for double-peaked narrow emitters, we could expect statistically smaller virial black hole masses estimated by observed broad Balmer line properties than true black hole masses (total masses of central two black holes). Then, we compare the virial black hole masses between a sample of 37 double-peaked narrow emitters with…
Many active galactic nuclei (AGN) and particularly narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, usually exhibit blueshifts and blue wings in several emission lines, which are mainly associated with outflows and strong winds. In order to study the radial velocity difference between the narrow component of H$β$ and the core component of [OIII]$λ$5007 and the asymmetric emission of this forbidden line, we investigate a sample of NLS1 galaxies . One of the aims of this paper is to analyze the blue wings of the [OIII]$λ$5007 profiles and their relation with the central engine. We have obtained and studie…
We present the distribution map of the far-infrared [OIII] 88um line emission around the 30 Doradus (30 Dor) region in the Large Magellanic Cloud obtained with the Fourier Transform Spectrometer of the Far-Infrared Surveyor onboard AKARI. The map reveals that the [OIII] emission is widely distributed by more than 10' around the super star cluster R136, implying that the 30 Dor region is affluent with interstellar radiation field hard enough to ionize O^{2+}. The observed [OIII] line intensities are as high as (1-2) x 10^{-6} W m^{-2} sr^{-1} on the peripheral regions 4'-5' away from the center…
In this manuscript, we check the well-known correlation between \oiii luminosity and continuum luminosity (\loiiicon) for AGN by a large sample of 1982 SDSS QSOs with $z<0.8$ and with high quality spectra. The strong correlation of \loiiicon can be found, similar as previous results for AGN. Moreover, among the 1982 QSOs, there are 708 QSOs with the [O~{\sc iii}]$λ$5007Å described by two components: one core component plus one extended component. Based on the luminosity from the core components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~narrow}$) and from the extended components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~ext…
We have used narrow-band [OIII]$λλ$4959,5007 and H$α$+[NII]$λ\lambda6548,84$ Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of 9 luminous (L[OIII]$>10^{42}$erg s$^{-1}$) type 2 QSOs with redshifts $0.1<z<0.5$ in order to constrain the geometry of their Extended Narrow-Line Regions (ENLR), as recent ground-based studies suggest these regions become more spherical at high luminosities due to destruction of the torus. We find instead elongated ENLRs reaching 4 to 19 kpc from the nucleus and bipolar ionization cones in [OIII]/(H$α$+[NII]) excitation maps indicating that the torus survives these luminosities,…
Major gas-rich mergers of galaxies are expected to play an important role in triggering and fuelling luminous AGN. We present deep multi-band (u/r/z) imaging and long slit spectroscopy of four double-peaked [OIII] emitting AGN, a class of objects associated with either kcp-separated binary AGN or final stage major mergers, though AGN with complex narrow-line regions are known contaminants. Such objects are of interest since they represent the onset of AGN activity during the merger process. Three of the objects studied have been confirmed as major mergers using near-infrared imaging, one is a …
We investigate Lya, [OIII]5007, Ha, and [CII]158um emission from 1124 galaxies at z=4.9-7.0. Our sample is composed of 1092 Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=4.9, 5.7, 6.6, and 7.0 identified by Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) narrowband surveys covered by Spitzer large area survey with Subaru/HSC (SPLASH) and 34 galaxies at z=5.148-7.508 with deep ALMA [CII]158um data in the literature. Fluxes of strong rest-frame optical lines of [OIII] and Ha (Hb) are constrained by significant excesses found in the SPLASH 3.6 and 4.5um photometry. At z=4.9, we find that the rest-frame Ha equivalent width and the Lya…
In the manuscript, we report evidence on broad \oiii components apparently obscured in Type-2 AGN under the framework of the Unified model, after checking properties of broad \oiii emissions in large samples of Type-1 and Type-2 AGN in SDSS DR12. We can well confirm the statistically lower flux ratios of the broad to the core \oiii components in Type-2 AGN than in Type-1 AGN, which can be naturally explained by stronger obscured broad \oiii components by central dust torus in Type-2 AGN, unless the Unified model for AGN was not appropriate to the narrow emission lines. The results provide furt…
We present an analysis of the orientation effects in SDSS quasar composite spectra. In a previous work we have shown that the equivalent width EW of the [OIII] λ5008Å line is a reliable indicator of the inclination of the accretion disk. Here, we have selected a sample of ~15,000 quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release and divided it in sub-samples with different values of EW([OIII]). We find inclination effects both on broad and narrow quasars emission lines, among which an increasing broadening from low to high EW for the broad lines and a decreasing importance of the blue component for the n…
We have made the first detections of the 88 micron [OIII] line from galaxies in the early Universe, detecting the line from the lensed AGN/starburst composite systems APM 08279+5255 at z = 3.911 and SMM J02399-0136 at z = 2.8076. The line is exceptionally bright from both systems, with apparent (lensed) luminosities ~10^11 L_solar. For APM 08279, the [OIII] line flux can be modeled in a star formation paradigm, with the stellar radiation field dominated by stars with effective temperatures, Teff >36,000 K, similar to the starburst found in M82. The model implies ~35% of the total far-IR lumino…
We present new ALMA observations of the [OIII]88$μ$m line and high angular resolution observations of the [CII]158$μ$m line in a normal star forming galaxy at z$=$7.1. Previous [CII] observations of this galaxy had detected [CII] emission consistent with the Ly$α$ redshift but spatially slightly offset relative to the optical (UV-rest frame) emission. The new [CII] observations reveal that the [CII] emission is partly clumpy and partly diffuse on scales larger than about 1kpc. [OIII] emission is also detected at high significance, offset relative to the optical counterpart in the same directio…
We investigate the properties of $z$=2.23 H$α$ and [OIII]$λ$5007 emitters using the narrow-band-selected samples obtained from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS: Sobral et al. 2013). We construct two samples of the H$α$ and [OIII] emitters and compare their integrated physical properties. We find that the distribution of stellar masses, dust extinction, star formation rates (SFRs), and specific SFRs, is not statistically different between the two samples. When we separate the full galaxy sample into three subsamples according to the detections of the H$α$ and/or [OIII] emission lines, …
To study the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback on the galactic ISM, we present Magellan long-slit spectroscopy of 12 luminous nearby type 2 AGN (L_bol~10^{45.0-46.5} erg/s, z~0.1). These objects are selected from a parent sample of spectroscopically identified AGN to have high [OIII]λ5007 and WISE mid-IR luminosities and extended emission in the SDSS r-band images, suggesting the presence of extended [OIII]λ5007 emission. We find spatially resolved [OIII] emission (2-35 kpc from the nucleus) in 8 out of 12 of these objects. Combined with samples of higher luminosity type 2 AGN, w…
We present a study of the relation between the [OIII] 5007A emission line width (sigma_{[OIII]}) and stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_{*}), utilizing a sample of 740 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with high-quality spectra at redshift z < 1.0. We find the broad correlation between the core component of [OIII] emission line width (sigma_{[OIII,core]}) and sigma_{*} with a scatter of 0.11~dex for the low redshift (z < 0.1) sample; for redshift (0.3 < z < 1.0) AGNs, the scatter is larger, being 0.16~dex. We also find that the Eddington ratio (L_{bol}/L_{Edd}) may play an important role in…
In this manuscript, we report strong linear correlation between shifted velocity and line width of the broad blue-shifted [OIII] components in SDSS quasars. Broad blue-shifted [OIII] components are commonly treated as indicators of outflows related to central engine, however, it is still an open question whether the outflows are related to central accretion properties or related to local physical properties of NLRs (narrow emission line regions). Here, the reported strong linear correlation with the Spearman Rank correlation coefficient 0.75 can be expected under the assumption of AGN (active …
We explore the kinematics of ionized gas via the [O III] $λ$5007 emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected on the basis of their mid-infrared (IR) emission, and split into obscured and unobscured populations based on their optical-IR colors. After correcting for differences in redshift distributions, we provide composite spectra of spectroscopically and photometrically defined obscured/Type 2 and unobscured/Type 1 AGN from 3500 to 7000 Å. The IR-selected obscured sources contain a mixture of narrow-lined Type 2 AGN and intermediate sources that have broad H$α$ emission and signif…
We characterise ionised gas outflows using a large sample of ~330 high-luminosity (45.5 < log(L_bol/erg s^-1) < 49.0), high-redshift (1.5 < z < 4.0) quasars via their [OIII]4960,5008 emission. The median velocity width of the [OIII] emission line is 1540 kms^-1, increasing with increasing quasar luminosity. Broad, blue-shifted wings are seen in the [OIII] profiles of 42 per cent of the sample. Rest-frame ultraviolet spectra with well-characterised CIV 1550 emission line properties are available for more than 210 quasars, allowing an investigation of the relationship between the Broad Line Regi…
We study the rest-frame optical properties of 74 luminous (L_bol=10^46.2-48.2 erg/s), 1.5<z<3.5 broad-line quasars with near-IR (JHK) slit spectroscopy. Systemic redshifts based on the peak of the [OIII]5007 line reveal that redshift estimates from the rest-frame UV broad emission lines (mostly MgII) are intrinsically uncertain by ~ 200 km/s (measurement errors accounted for). The overall full-width-at-half-maximum of the narrow [OIII] line is ~ 1000 km/s on average. A significant fraction of the total [OIII] flux (~ 40%) is in a blueshifted wing component with a median velocity offset of ~ 70…
Reionisation-era galaxies often display intense nebular emission lines, both in rest-frame optical ([OIII]+H$β$) and ultraviolet (UV; CIII], CIV). How such strong nebular emission is powered remains unclear, with both active galactic nuclei (AGN) and hot stars considered equally viable. The UV continuum slopes of these early systems tend to be very blue ($β<-2$), reflecting minimal dust obscuration, young ages, and low metallicities. This contrasts with narrow-lined AGN at $z\sim2-3$, whose UV slopes are significantly redder ($β>-1$) than typical star-forming systems in the reionisation era. T…
The discovery of a broad, $\sim$1.5$^{\circ}$ long filamentary [OIII] 5007 emission $\sim$1.2$^{\circ}$ south-east of the M31 nucleus has recently been reported. More than 100 hours of exposures of a wide field (3.48$^{\circ} \times 2.32^{\circ}$) have allowed this pioneering detection based on 30 Å narrow-band filters and several small refractors equipped with large cameras. We report a first velocity measurement in this extensive [OIII] emission line region. We used the low-resolution spectrograph MISTRAL (R $\sim$ 750), a facility of the Haute-Provence Observatory 193 cm telescope. The velo…
We have studied the physical properties of a sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies, and present a summary of our previous results, and new results. In particular, we have previously shown that (1) the locus of NLS1 galaxies on the M_BH-sigma_[OIII] plane does follow the relation of non-active galaxies after removing objects obviously dominated by outflows as evidenced by their [OIII] core blueshifts. We have (2) identified a number of so-called 'blue outliers' with large outflow velocities revealed by their emission-line kinematic shifts. We also (3) present new correlations and tren…
The spectra of active galactic nuclei usually exhibit wings in some emission lines, such as [OIII]$λλ$5007,4959, with these wings generally being blueshifted and related to strong winds and outflows. The aim of this work was to analyse the [OIII] emission lines in broad line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) galaxies in order to detect the presence of wings, and to study the [OIII] line properties and their possible connection with the central engine. In addition, we attempted to compare the black hole mass distribution in both BLS1 galaxies with symmetric and blue-asymmetric [OIII] profiles. For this purpose,…
Spectroscopic observations of massive $z>7$ galaxies selected to have extremely large [OIII]+H$β$ equivalent width (EW $\sim1500$ Å) have recently revealed large Ly$α$ detection rates, in contrast to the weak emission seen in the general population. Why these systems are uniquely visible in Ly$α$ at redshifts where the IGM is likely significantly neutral is not clear. With the goal of better understanding these results, we have begun a campaign with MMT and Magellan to measure Ly$α$ in galaxies with similar [OIII]+H$β$ EWs at $z\simeq2-3$. At these redshifts, the IGM is highly ionized, allowin…
Recent ALMA measurements have revealed bright OIII 88 micron line emission from galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) at redshifts as large as $z \sim 9$. We introduce an analytic model to help interpret these and other upcoming OIII 88 micron measurements. Our approach sums over the emission from discrete Str$\ddot{\mathrm{o}}$mgren spheres and considers the total volume of ionized hydrogen in a galaxy of a given star-formation rate. We estimate the relative volume of doubly-ionized oxygen and ionized hydrogen and its dependence on the spectrum of ionizing photons. We then calculate…
We present Bayesian AGN Decomposition Analysis for SDSS Spectra (BADASS), an open source spectral analysis code designed for automatic detailed deconvolution of AGN and host galaxy spectra, implemented in Python, and designed for the next generation of large scale surveys. BADASS simultaneously fits all spectral components, including power-law continuum, stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution, FeII emission, as well as forbidden (narrow), permitted (broad), and outflow emission line features, all performed using Markov Chain Monte Carlo to obtain robust uncertainties and autocorrelation a…
We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of five star-forming galaxies at redshifts z in the range 0.2993-0.4317 and with high emission-line flux ratios O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ~ 8-27 aiming to detect the Lyman continuum (LyC) emission. We detect LyC emission in all galaxies with the escape fractions fesc(LyC) in a range of 2-72 per cent. A narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks in four galaxies and with three peaks in one object is seen in medium-resolution COS spectra with a velocity separation between the peaks Vsep varying from …
Here we describe the \emph{Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey} (S7) and present results on 64 galaxies drawn from the first data release. The S7 uses the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) mounted on the ANU 2.3m telescope located at the Siding Spring Observatory to deliver an integral field of $38\times25$~ arcsec at a spectral resolution of $R=7000$ in the red ($530-710$nm), and $R=3000$ in the blue ($340-560$nm). {From these data cubes we have extracted the Narrow Line Region (NLR) spectra from a 4 arc sec aperture centred on the nucleus. We also determine the H$β$ an…
A galaxy merger is expected to cause the formation of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary, which itself eventually coalesces through the anisotropic emission of gravitational waves. This may result in the merged SMBH receiving a recoil kick velocity ~100 - 1000 km/s, causing it to oscillate in the gravitational potential of the host galaxy. The luminous quasar E1821+643, identified as an SMBH recoil candidate via spectropolarimetry observations, shows Doppler shifting of the broad emission lines in direct and scattered light, consistent with a relative velocity of 2100 km/s between the qua…
This paper presents deep K-band spectroscopic observations of galaxies at z=3-4 with composite photometric rest-frame Hb+[OIII] equivalent widths EW_0>600A, comparable to the EW of galaxies observed during the epoch of reionisation (EoR, z>6). The typical spectroscopic [OIII] EW_0 and stellar mass of our targets is ~ 700A and log(M_star/M_sun)=8.98. By stacking the [OIII] emission profiles, we find evidence of a weak broad component with F_broad/F_narrow ~ 0.2 and velocity width sigma_{broad} ~ 170 km/s. The strength and velocity width of the broad component does not change significantly with …
In a single optical spectrum, the quasar narrow-line region (NLR) reveals low density, photoionized gas in the host galaxy interstellar medium, while the immediate vicinity of the central engine generates the accretion disk continuum and broad emission lines. To isolate these two components, we construct a library of high S/N optical composite spectra created from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR7). We divide the sample into bins of continuum luminosity and Hbeta FWHM that are used to construct median composites at different redshift steps up to 0.75. We measure the luminosities of the na…
Partially obscured AGNs within a redshift range $z=0.011\sim0.256$ are used to re-study the role of feedback in the AGN-host coevolution issue in terms of their [OIII]$λ$5007 emission line profile. The spectra of these objects enable us to determine the AGN's accretion properties directly from their broad H$α$ emission. This is essential for getting rid of the "circular reasoning" in our previous study of narrow emission-line galaxies, in which the [OIII] emission line was used not only as a proxy of AGN's bolometric luminosity, but also as a diagnostic of outflow. In addition, the measurement…
In this work, we use ~500 low-redshift (z ~ 0.1) X-ray AGNs observed by XMM-Newton and SDSS to investigate the prevalence and nature of AGNs that apparently lack optical emission lines (``optically dull AGNs''). Although 1/4 of spectra appear absorption-line dominated in visual assessment, line extraction with robust continuum subtraction from the MPA/JHU catalog reveals usable [OIII] measurements in 98% of the sample, allowing us to study [OIII]-underluminous AGNs together with more typical AGNs in the context of the L$_{\mathrm{[OIII]}}$--L$_{X}$ relation. We find that ``optically dull AGNs'…
Context: Planetary nebulae (PNe) are excellent tracers of stellar populations with low surface brightness, and therefore provide a powerful method to detect and explore the rich system of substructures discovered around the main spiral galaxies of the Local Group. Aims: We searched the outskirts of the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 (the Triangulum) for PNe to gain new insights into the extended stellar substructure on the northern side of the disc and to study the existence of a faint classical halo. Methods: The search is based on wide field imaging covering a 4.5 square degree area out to a …
We conduct a systematic search for galaxies at $z=0.1-1.5$ with [OII]$\lambda3727$, [OIII]$\lambda5007$, or H$α\lambda6563$ emission lines extended over at least 30 kpc by using deep narrowband and broadband imaging in Subaru-XMM Deep Survey (SXDS) field. These extended emission-line galaxies are dubbed [OII], [OIII], or H$α$ blobs. Based on a new selection method that securely selects extended emission-line galaxies, we find 77 blobs at $z=0.40-1.46$ with the isophotal area of emission lines down to $1.2\times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ kpc$^{-2}$. Four of them are spectroscopically conf…
Deep spectroscopy of galaxies in the reionization-era has revealed intense CIII] and CIV line emission (EW $>15-20$ Å). In order to interpret the nebular emission emerging at $z>6$, we have begun targeting rest-frame UV emission lines in galaxies with large specific star formation rates (sSFRs) at $1.3<z<3.7$. We find that CIII] reaches the EWs seen at $z>6$ only in large sSFR galaxies with [OIII]+H$β$ EW $>1500$ Å. In contrast to previous studies, we find that many galaxies with intense [OIII] have weak CIII] emission (EW $=5-8$ Å), suggesting that the radiation field associated with young st…
We examine the spatial extent of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of a sample of 30 luminous obscured quasars at $0.4 < z < 0.7$ observed with spatially resolved Gemini-N GMOS long-slit spectroscopy. Using the [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission feature, we estimate the size of the NLR using a cosmology-independent measurement: the radius where the surface brightness falls to 10$^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$. We then explore the effects of atmospheric seeing on NLR size measurements and conclude that direct measurements of the NLR size from observed profiles are too large by 0.1 - 0.2 de…
Different physical processes in galaxy evolution, such as galaxy mergers that lead to coalescence of dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and outflows emanating from the narrow line region, can leave their imprint on the optical spectra of AGN in the form of double-peaked narrow emission lines. To investigate the neutral gas in the centres of such AGN, we have conducted a pilot survey of HI 21-cm absorption, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), in radio-loud AGN whose optical spectra show double-peaked [OIII] emission lines at z<=0.4 (median z~0.14). Among the eight sources…
We present an observational study of 22 broad absorption line quasars (BAL QSOs) at $3\lesssim z \lesssim5$ based on optical/near-IR spectroscopy, aiming to investigate quasar winds and their effects. The near-IR spectroscopy covers the \hb\ and/or \mgii\ broad emission lines (BELs) for these quasars, allowing us to estimate their central black hole (BH) masses in a robust way. We found that our BAL QSOs on average do not have a higher Eddington ratio than that from non-BAL QSOs matched in redshift and/or luminosity. In a subset consisting of seven strong BAL QSOs possessing sub-relativistic B…
We present two-dimensional stellar and gaseous kinematics of the inner 0.7 $\times$ 1.2 kpc$^{2}$ of the Seyfert galaxy ESO 362-G18, derived from optical spectra obtained with the GMOS/IFU on the Gemini South telescope at a spatial resolution of $\approx$170 pc and spectral resolution of 36 km s$^{-1}$. ESO 362-G18 is a strongly perturbed galaxy of morphological type Sa or S0/a, with a minor merger approaching along the NE direction. Previous studies have shown that the [OIII] emission shows a fan-shaped extension of $\approx$ 10\arcsec\ to the SE. We detect the [OIII] doublet, [NII] and H$α$ …
We analyse the kinematics of 170 AGN host galaxies as compared to those of a matched control sample of non-active galaxies from the MaNGA survey in order to characterise and estimate the extents of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) and of the kinematically disturbed region (KDR) by the AGN. We define the observed NLR radius as the farthest distance from the nucleus within which both [Oiii]/Hβand [Nii]/Hαratios fall in the AGN region of the BPT diagram and the Hαequivalent width is required to be larger than 3.0Å. The extent of the KDR is defined as the distance from the nucleus within which the AGN…
We present our measurements of the H$α$, [OIII], and [OII] luminosity functions as part of the Lyman Alpha Galaxies at Epoch of Reionization (LAGER) survey using our samples of 1577 $z = 0.47$ H$α$-, 3933 $z = 0.93$ [OIII]-, and 5367 $z = 1.59$ [OII]-selected emission line galaxies in a single 3 deg$^2$ CTIO/Blanco DECam pointing of the COSMOS field. Our observations reach 5$σ$ depths of $8.2\times10^{-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ and comoving volumes of $(1-7)\times10^{5}$ Mpc$^3$ making our survey one of the deepest narrowband surveys. We measure the observed luminosity functions and find bes…
Standardizing reverberation-mapped H$β$ active galactic nuclei using time-averaged radius$-$luminosity relations with 5100\,Å\,, broad H$β$, and narrow \OIII\ luminosities
[Oiii]λλ4959,5007 "blue outliers" -- that are suggestive of outflows in the narrow line region of quasars -- appear to be much more common at intermediate z (high luminosity) than at low z. About 40% of quasars in a Hamburg ESO intermediate-z sample of 52 sources qualify as blue outliers (i.e., quasars with [OIII] λλ4959,5007 lines showing large systematic blueshifts with respect to rest frame). We discuss major findings on what has become an intriguing field in active galactic nuclei research and stress the relevance of blue outliers to feedback and host galaxy evolution.
We investigate the properties of $\sim7000$ narrow-band selected galaxies with strong H$β+$[OIII] and [OII] nebular emission lines from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS) between $z \sim 0.8 - 5.0$. Our sample covers a wide range in stellar mass ($M\sim10^{7.5 - 12.0}$ M$_\odot$), rest-frame equivalent widths (EW$_\mathrm{rest}\sim 10 - 10^5$ Å), and line luminosities ($L\sim10^{40.5 - 43.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$). We measure the H$β+$[OIII] and [OII]-selected stellar mass functions out to $z \sim 3.5$ and find that both $M_\star$ and $ϕ_\star$ increases with cosmic time, which may be due to t…
We recently proposed the equivalent width (EW) of the narrow [OIII]5007Å emission line as an orientation indicator for active galactic nuclei. We tested this method on about $12,300$ optically selected broad line quasars from the SDSS 7th Data Release at redshift $z < 0.8$ and with full width at half-maximum values of broad emission lines (H$α$, H$β$, and MgII) larger than $2000$ km/s. We now examine their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using broad band photometry from the near-infrared to the ultraviolet to look for variations in the overall shape as a function of the EW[OIII]. We find …
We present results from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey on broad flux from the nebular emission lines H$α$, [NII], [OIII], H$β$, and [SII]. The sample consists of 127 star-forming galaxies at $1.37 < z < 2.61$ and 84 galaxies at $2.95 < z < 3.80$. We decompose the emission lines using narrow ($\text{FWHM} < 275 \ \text{km s}^{-1}$) and broad ($\text{FWHM} > 300 \ \text{km s}^{-1}$) Gaussian components for individual galaxies and stacks. Broad emission is detected at $>3σ$ in $<10$% of galaxies and the broad flux accounts for 10-70% of the total flux. We find a slight increase …
We present the results of integral field spectroscopy of the gravitational wave (GW) recoiling black hole candidate 3C 186. The goal of the observations is to study the kinematics of the [OIII]5007 narrow emission line region (NLR) of the quasar, and investigate the origin of the velocity offsets originally measured for different UV lines. The results show that i) the spatial structure of the NLR is complex. The [OIII]5007 line shows significant velocity offsets with respect to the systemic redshift of the source. We investigate the clustering properties of $\sim 7000$ H$β$+[OIII] and [OII] narrowband-selected emitters at $z \sim 0.8 - 4.7$ from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey. We find clustering lengths, $r_0$, of $1.5 - 4.0h^{-1}$ Mpc and minimum dark matter halo masses of $10^{10.7 - 12.1}\rm{M}_\odot$ for our $z = 0.8 - 3.2$ H$β$+[OIII] emitters and $r_0 \sim 2.0 - 8.3h^{-1}$ Mpc and halo masses of $10^{11.5 - 12.6}\rm{M}_\odot$ for our $z = 1.5 - 4.7$ [OII] emitters. We find $r_0$ to strongly increase both with increasing line luminosity and redshift. By taking into account the evolution of the c…
We summarize results of the analysis of the optical variability of the continuum and emission-line fluxes in the 3C390.3 nucleus during 1992-2014. The [OIII]5007 flux increases monotonically by $\approx$30 per cent in 2003-2014. The narrow Balmer lines show similar monotonic increase, while the variability patterns of the [OI]6300 narrow line are completely different from that of [OIII]. The reverberation lags are found to be 88.6$\pm$8.4, 161$\pm$15, and 113$\pm$14d for the H$β$, H$α$, and H$γ$ broad emission-lines, respectively. The reverberation mass of the central black hole equals to (1.8…
We study the morphological and structural properties of the host galaxies associated with 57 optically-selected luminous type 2 AGN at $z\sim$0.3-0.4: 16 high-luminosity Seyfert 2 (HLSy2, 8.0$\le$log($L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\odot})<$8.3) and 41 obscured quasars (QSO2, log($L_{\rm [OIII]}/L_{\odot})\ge$8.3). With this work, the total number of QSO2 at $z<1$ with parametrized galaxies increases from $\sim$35 to 76. Our analysis is based on HST WFPC2 and ACS images that we fit with {\sc GALFIT}. HLSy2 and QSO2 show a wide diversity of galaxy hosts. The main difference lies in the higher incidence of h…
We compare optical and hard X-ray identifications of AGNs using a uniformly selected (above a flux limit of f_2-8 keV = 3.5e-15 erg/cm2/s) and highly optically spectroscopically complete ( > 80% for f_2-8 keV > 1e-14 erg/cm2/s and > 60% below) 2-8 keV sample observed in three Chandra fields (CLANS, CLASXS, and the CDF-N). We find that empirical emission-line ratio diagnostic diagrams misidentify 20-50% of the X-ray selected AGNs that can be put on these diagrams as star formers, depending on which division is used. We confirm that there is a large (2 orders in magnitude) dispersion in the log …
