We investigate the properties of $\sim7000$ narrow-band selected galaxies with strong H$β+$[OIII] and [OII] nebular emission lines from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS) between $z \sim 0.8 - 5.0$. Our sample covers a wide range in stellar mass ($M\sim10^{7.5 - 12.0}$ M$_\odot$), rest-frame equivalent widths (EW$_\mathrm{rest}\sim 10 - 10^5$ Å), and line luminosities ($L\sim10^{40.5 - 43.2}$ erg s$^{-1}$). We measure the H$β+$[OIII] and [OII]-selected stellar mass functions out to $z \sim 3.5$ and find that both $M_\star$ and $ϕ_\star$ increases with cosmic time, which may be due to the [OIII] selection including an increasing fraction of AGN at lower redshifts. The [OII]-selected stellar mass functions show a constant $M_\star\sim10^{11.6}$ M$_\odot$ and a strong, increasing evolution with cosmic time in $ϕ_\star$ in line with H$α$ studies. We also investigate the EW$_\mathrm{rest}$ evolution as a function of redshift with a fixed mass range (10$^{9.5 - 10.0}$ M$_\odot$) and find an increasing trend best represented by $(1+z)^{3.81\pm0.14}$ and $(1+z)^{2.72\pm0.19}$ up to $z\sim 2$ and $\sim 3$ for H$β$+[OIII] and [OII] emitters, respectively. This is the first time that the EW evolution has been directly measured for H$β+$[OIII] and [OII] emitters up to these redshifts. There is evidence for a slower evolution for $z > 2$ in the H$β+$[OIII] EW and a decreasing trend for $z > 3$ in the [OII] EW evolution, which would imply low [OII] EW at the highest redshifts and higher [OIII]/[OII] line ratios. This suggests that the ionization parameter at higher redshift may be significantly higher than the local Universe. Our results set the stage for future near-IR space-based spectroscopic surveys to test our extrapolated predictions and also produce $z > 5$ measurements to constrain the high-$z$ end of the EW$_\mathrm{rest}$ and [OIII]/[OII] evolution.
We investigate the properties of $z$=2.23 H$α$ and [OIII]$λ$5007 emitters using the narrow-band-selected samples obtained from the High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS: Sobral et al. 2013). We construct two samples of the H$α$ and [OIII] emitters and compare their integrated physical properties. We find that the distribution of stellar masses, dust extinction, star formation rates (SFRs), and specific SFRs, is not statistically different between the two samples. When we separate the full galaxy sample into three subsamples according to the detections of the H$α$ and/or [OIII] emission lines, …
We present a detailed multi-wavelength study (from rest-frame UV to far-IR) of narrow-band (NB) selected, star-forming (SF) H$α$ emitters (HAEs) at $z \sim 2.23$ taken from the High Redshift(Z) Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). We find that HAEs have similar SED-derived properties and colors to $sBzK$ galaxies and probe a well-defined portion of the SF population at $z \sim 2$. This is not true for Ly$α$ emitters (LAEs), which are strongly biased towards blue, less massive galaxies (missing a significant percentage of the SF population). Combining our H$α$ observations with matched, existing Ly$α…
We use new near-infrared spectroscopic observations to investigate the nature and evolution of the most luminous Hα(Ha) emitters at z~0.8-2.23, which evolve strongly in number density over this period, and compare them to more typical Ha emitters. We study 59 luminous Ha emitters with $L_{Hα}>L_{Hα}^*$, roughly equally split per redshift slice at z~0.8, 1.47 and 2.23 from the HiZELS and CF-HiZELS surveys. We find that, overall, 30$\pm$8% are AGN (80$\pm$30% of these AGN are broad-line AGN, BL-AGN), and we find little to no evolution in the AGN fraction with redshift, within the errors. However…
New results are presented, as part of the Hi-z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS), from the largest area survey to date (1.4 sq.deg) for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) at z~9. The survey, which is primarily targeting H-alpha emitters at z<3, uses the Wide Field CAMera on the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope and a custom narrow-band filter in the J band and reaches a Lyman-alpha luminosity limit of ~10^43.8 erg/s over a co-moving volume of 1.12x10^6 Mpc^3 at z=8.96+-0.06. Only 2 candidates were found out of 1517 line emitters and those were rejected as LAEs after follow-up observations. The limit on t…
We investigate the evolution of the H$β$+[OIII] and [OII] luminosity functions from $z \sim 0.8$ to $\sim5$ in four redshift slices per emission line using data from the High-{\it z} Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). This is the first time that the H$β$+[OIII] and [OII] luminosity functions have been studied at these redshifts in a self-consistent analysis. This is also the largest sample of [OII] and H$β$+[OIII] emitters (3475 and 3298 emitters, respectively) in this redshift range, with large co-moving volumes $\sim 1 \times 10^6$ Mpc$^{-3}$ in two independent volumes (COSMOS and UDS), greatly …
New results from a large survey of H-alpha emission-line galaxies at z=0.84 using WFCAM/UKIRT and a custom narrow-band filter in the J band are presented as part of the HiZELS survey. Reaching an effective flux limit of 1e-16 erg/s/cm^2 in a comoving volume of 1.8e5 Mpc^3, this represents the largest and deepest survey of its kind ever done at z~1. There are 1517 potential line emitters detected across 1.4 sq.deg of the COSMOS and UKIDSS UDS fields, of which 743 are selected as H-alpha emitters. These are used to calculate the H-alpha luminosity function, which is well-fitted by a Schechter fu…
(Abridged) The clustering properties of a well-defined sample of 734 H-alpha emitters at z=0.84 obtained as part of the Hi-z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS) are investigated. The spatial correlation function is very well-described by (r/r_0)^-1.8, with r_0=2.7+-0.3Mpc/h. The correlation length r_0 increases strongly with H-alpha luminosity, L_H-alpha, from r_0~2Mpc/h for the most quiescent galaxies (star-formation rates of ~4M_sun/yr), up to r_0>5Mpc/h for the brightest galaxies in H-alpha. The correlation length also increases with increasing rest-frame K-band luminosity (M_K), but the r_0-L_H-…
We investigate the far-infrared properties of galaxies selected via deep, narrow-band imaging of the H$α$ emission line in four redshift slices from $z=0.40$--$2.23$ over $\sim 1$deg$^2$ as part of the High-redshift Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). We use a stacking approach in the Herschel PACS/SPIRE bands, along with $850\,μ$m imaging from SCUBA-2 to study the evolution of the dust properties of H$α$-emitters selected above an evolving characteristic luminosity threshold, $0.2L^\star_{{\rm H}α}(z)$. We investigate the relationship between the dust temperatures and the far-infrared luminosities…
Radio galaxies are among the most massive galaxies in the high redshift universe and are known to often lie in protocluster environments. We have studied the fields of seven z = 2.2 radio galaxies with HAWK-I narrow-band and broad-band imaging in order to map out their environment using Halpha emitters (HAEs). The results are compared to the blank field HAE survey HiZELS. All of the radio galaxy fields are overdense in HAEs relative to a typical HiZELS field of the same area and four of the seven are richer than all except one of 65 essentially random HiZELS subfields of the same size. The sta…
We present results from the largest contiguous narrow-band survey in the near-infrared. We have used WIRCam/CFHT and the lowOH2 filter (1.187$\pm$0.005 $μ$m) to survey ~10 deg$^2$ of contiguous extragalactic sky in the SA22 field. A total of ~6000 candidate emission-line galaxies are found. We use deep ugrizJK data to obtain robust photometric redshifts. We combine our data with the High-redshift Emission Line Survey (HiZELS), explore spectroscopic surveys (VVDS, VIPERS) and obtain our own spectroscopic follow-up with KMOS, FMOS and MOSFIRE to derive large samples of high-redshift emission-lin…
We present a sample of $\sim 1000$ emission line galaxies at $z=0.4-4.7$ from the $\sim0.7$deg$^2$ High-$z$ Emission Line Survey (HiZELS) in the Boötes field identified with a suite of six narrow-band filters at $\approx 0.4-2.1$ $μ$m. These galaxies have been selected on their Ly$α$ (73), {\sc [Oii]} (285), H$β$/{\sc [Oiii]} (387) or H$α$ (362) emission-line, and have been classified with optical to near-infrared colours. A subsample of 98 sources have reliable redshifts from multiple narrow-band (e.g. [O{\sc ii}]-H$α$) detections and/or spectroscopy. In this survey paper, we present the obse…
[Abridged] We compare H-alpha, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) indicators of star formation rate (SFR) for a sample of z = 0.84 galaxies from the High-z Emission Line Survey (HiZELS). Using multi-wavelength diagnostics, we estimate that 5 - 11 per cent of H-alpha emitters at this redshift are active galactic nuclei. We detect 35 per cent of the H-alpha emitters individually at 24 microns, and stack the star-forming emitters on deep 24-micron images in order to calculate the typical SFRs of our galaxies. These are compared to the observed H-alpha line fluxes in order to estimate the extincti…
This paper presents the results from the first wide and deep dual narrow-band survey to select H-alpha (Ha) and [OII] line emitters at z=1.47+-0.02 (using matched narrow-band filters in the H and z' bands), exploiting synergies between the UKIRT and Subaru telescopes. The Ha survey at z=1.47 reaches a flux limit of ~7x10^-17 erg/s/cm^2 and detects ~200 Ha emitters over 0.7deg^2, while the much deeper [OII] survey reaches an effective flux of ~7x10^-18 erg/s/cm^2, detecting ~1400 z=1.47 [OII] emitters in a matched co-moving volume of ~2.5x10^5 Mpc^3. The combined survey results in the identific…
This paper presents new deep and wide narrow-band surveys undertaken with UKIRT, Subaru and the VLT; a combined effort to select large, robust samples of H-alpha (Ha) emitters at z=0.40, 0.84, 1.47 and 2.23 (corresponding to look-back times of 4.2, 7.0, 9.2 and 10.6 Gyrs) in a uniform manner over ~2 deg^2 in the COSMOS and UDS fields. The deep Ha surveys reach ~3M_sun/yr out to z=2.2 for the first time, while the wide area and the coverage over two independent fields allow to greatly overcome cosmic variance. A total of 1742, 637, 515 and 807 Ha emitters are homogeneously selected at z=0.40, 0…
We report the results of a spectroscopic search for Lyman-alpha emission from gamma-ray burst host galaxies. Based on the well-defined TOUGH sample of 69 X-ray selected Swift GRBs, we have targeted the hosts of a subsample of 20 GRBs known from afterglow spectroscopy to be in the redshift range 1.8-4.5. We detect Lya emission from 7 out of the 20 hosts, with the typical limiting 3sigma line flux being 8E-18 erg/cm2/s, corresponding to a Lya luminosity of 6E41 erg/s at z=3. The Lya luminosities for the 7 hosts in which we detect Lya emission are in the range (0.6-2.3)E42 erg/s corresponding to …
We present a measurement of the fraction of Lyman $α$ (Ly$α$) emitters ($X_{\rm{Ly} α}$) amongst HST continuum-selected galaxies at $3<z<6$ with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the VLT. Making use of the first 24 MUSE-Wide pointings in GOODS-South, each having an integration time of 1 hour, we detect 100 Ly$α$ emitters and find $X_{\rm{Ly} α}\gtrsim0.5$ for most of the redshift range covered, with 29 per cent of the Ly$α$ sample exhibiting rest equivalent widths (rest-EWs) $\leq$ 15Å. Adopting a range of rest-EW cuts (0 - 75Å), we find no evidence of a dependence of $X_{\rm{Ly}…
We present a new constraint on the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction at z~1.3. We obtain deep, high sensitivity far-UV imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Solar Blind Channel (SBC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), targeting 11 star-forming galaxies at 1.2<z<1.4. The galaxies are selected from the 3D-HST survey to have high H$α$ equivalent width (EW) with EW > 190 Å, low stellar mass (M* < 10^10 M_sun) and U-band magnitude of U<24.2. These criteria identify young, low metallicity star bursting populations similar to the primordial star-forming galaxies believed to have re…
We study the mean properties of a large representative sample of 217 galaxies showing CIII] emission at $2<z<4$, selected from a parent sample of $\sim$750 main-sequence star-forming galaxies in the VANDELS survey. These CIII] emitters have a broad range of UV luminosities, thus allowing a detailed stacking analysis to characterize their stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR) and stellar metallicity, as a function of the UV emission line ratios, EWs, and the carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) abundance ratio. Reliable CIII] detections represent $\sim$30% of the parent sample. Extreme CIII] emitters (EW(C…
Deep spectroscopy of galaxies in the reionization-era has revealed intense CIII] and CIV line emission (EW $>15-20$ Å). In order to interpret the nebular emission emerging at $z>6$, we have begun targeting rest-frame UV emission lines in galaxies with large specific star formation rates (sSFRs) at $1.3<z<3.7$. We find that CIII] reaches the EWs seen at $z>6$ only in large sSFR galaxies with [OIII]+H$β$ EW $>1500$ Å. In contrast to previous studies, we find that many galaxies with intense [OIII] have weak CIII] emission (EW $=5-8$ Å), suggesting that the radiation field associated with young st…

We explore deep rest-frame UV to FIR data in the COSMOS field to measure the individual spectral energy distributions (SED) of the ~4000 SC4K (Sobral et al. 2018) Lyman-alpha (Lya) emitters (LAEs) at z~2-6. We find typical stellar masses of 10$^{9.3\pm0.6}$ M$_{\odot}$ and star formation rates (SFR) of SFR$_{SED}=4.4^{+10.5}_{-2.4}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr and SFR$_{Lya}=5.9^{+6.3}_{-2.6}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr, combined with very blue UV slopes of beta=-2.1$^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$, but with significant variations within the population. M$_{UV}$ and beta are correlated in a similar way to UV-selected sources, but LAE…
We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emitter (LAE) at $z=3.2177\pm0.0001$ in VLT/MUSE data. The galaxy is strongly lensed by the galaxy cluster RXC~J0018.5+1626 recently observed in the RELICS survey, and the double-peaked Ly$α$ emission is clearly detected in the two counter images in the MUSE field-of-view. We measure a relatively high Ly$α$ rest-frame equivalent width (EW) of $\mathrm{EW}_{\mathrm{Ly}α,0}=(63\pm2)\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$. Additional near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy allows us to measure the H$β$, [OIII]$\lambda4959\,\mathring{\mathrm{A}}$ and [OIII]$\…
We detect 20 $z=7.0$ Ly$α$ emitter (LAE) candidates to $L({\rm Ly}α) \geq 2 \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ or $0.3$ $L^*_{z=7}$ and in $6.1\times 10^5$ Mpc$^3$ volume in the Subaru Deep Field and the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey field by 82 and 37 hours of Subaru Suprime-Cam narrowband NB973 and reddest optical $y$-band imaging. We compare their Ly$α$ and UV luminosity functions (LFs) and densities and Ly$α$ equivalent widths (EWs) to those of $z=5.7$, 6.6 and 7.3 LAEs from previous Suprime-Cam surveys. The Ly$α$ LF (density) rapidly declines by a factor of $\times$1.5 (1.9) in $L({\rm Ly}α)$ a…
Combining the catalogue of galaxy morphologies in the COSMOS field and the sample of H$α$ emitters at redshifts $z=0.4$ and $z=0.84$ of the HiZELS survey, we selected $\sim$ 220 star-forming bulgeless systems (Sérsic index $n \leq 1.5$) at both epochs. We present their star formation properties and we investigate their contribution to the star formation rate function (SFRF) and global star formation rate density (SFRD) at $z < 1$. For comparison, we also analyse H$α$ emitters with more structurally evolved morphologies that we split into two classes according to their Sérsic index $n$: interme…
Context: Ultraviolet (UV) emission-line spectra are used to spectroscopically confirm high-z galaxies and increasingly also to determine their physical properties. Aims: To interpret the observed UV spectra of distant galaxies in terms of the dominant radiation field and the physical condition of the interstellar medium. Methods: We construct a large grid of photoionization models and derive new spectral UV line diagnostics using equivalent widths (EWs) of CIII]1909, CIV1549 and the line ratios of CIII], CIV, and HeII1640 recombination lines. We apply these diagnostics to a sample of 450 CIII]…
Over the past decades, several studies have discovered a population of galaxies undergoing very strong star formation events, called extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs). In this work, we exploit the capabilities of the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS), a wide field multifilter survey, with 2000 square degrees observed. We use it to identify EELGs at low redshift by their [OIII]5007 emission line. We intend to provide with a more complete, deep, and less biased sample of local EELGs. We select objects with an excess of flux in the J-PLUS mediumband $J0515$ filter, which …
Candidate galaxies at redshifts of $z \sim 10$ are now being found in extremely deep surveys, probing very small areas. As a consequence, candidates are very faint, making spectroscopic confirmation practically impossible. In order to overcome such limitations, we have undertaken the CF-HiZELS survey, which is a large area, medium depth near infrared narrow-band survey targeted at $z=8.8$ Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) emitters (LAEs) and covering 10 deg$^2$ in part of the SSA22 field with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We surveyed a comoving volume of $4.7\times 10^6$ Mpc$^3$ to a Ly$α$ luminosity li…
HeII is the most sought-after emission line to detect and characterize metal free stellar populations. However, current stellar population/photo-ionization models lack sufficient He$^+$ ionising photons to reproduce observed HeII fluxes while being consistent with other emission lines. Using $\sim10-30$ hour deep pointings from MUSE, we obtain $\sim10$ $z\sim2-4$ HeII$\lambda1640$ emitters to study their inter-stellar medium (ISM) and stellar population properties. Emission line ratio diagnostics of our sample suggest that emission lines are driven by star-formation in solar to moderately sub-…
We present the CAlibrating LYMan-$α$ with H$α$ (CALYMHA) pilot survey and new results on Lyman-$α$ (Lya) selected galaxies at z~2. We use a custom-built Lya narrow-band filter at the Isaac Newton Telescope, designed to provide a matched volume coverage to the z=2.23 Ha HiZELS survey. Here we present the first results for the COSMOS and UDS fields. Our survey currently reaches a 3$σ$ line flux limit of ~4x10$^{-17}$ erg/s/cm$^{2}$, and a Lya luminosity limit of ~10$^{42.3}$ erg/s. We find 188 Lya emitters over 7.3x10$^5$ Mpc$^{3}$, but also find significant numbers of other line emitting source…
We investigate the ionizing properties of the pair of bright Ly$α$ emitting galaxies BDF521 and BDF2195 at z=7.012 in order to constrain their contribution to the formation of the BDF "reionized bubble". We obtain constraints on UV emission lines (CIV$λ1548$ doublet, HeII$λ1640$, OIII]$λ1660$ doublet, and CIII]$λ1909$ doublet) from deep VLT-XSHOOTER observations and compare them to those available for other high-redshift objects, and to models with mixed stellar and AGN emission. We use this spectroscopic information together with the photometry available in the field to constrain the physical…
The H$α$ equivalent width (EW) is an observational proxy for specific star formation rate (sSFR) and a tracer of episodic star-formation activity. Previous assessments show that EW strongly anti-correlates with stellar mass as $M^{-0.25}$ similar to the sSFR -- stellar mass relation. However, such a correlation may be driven/formed by selection effects. In this study, we investigate how H$α$ EWs correlate with galaxy properties and how selection biases could alter such correlations using a $z = 0.47$ narrowband-selected sample of 1572 H$α$ emitters from the Ly$α$ Galaxies in the Epoch of Reion…
We present deep Keck/MOSFIRE near-infrared spectroscopy of a strong Lyman alpha emitting source at z=6.1292, HSC J142331.71-001809.1, which was discovered by the SHELLQS program from imaging data of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey. This source is one of five objects that show unresolved (<230 km s-1) and prominent (>10^44 erg s-1) Lyman alpha emission lines at absolute 1450 angstrom continuum magnitudes of M1450~-22 mag. Its rest-frame Lyman alpha equivalent width (EW) is 370+/-30 angstrom. In the 2 hour Keck/MOSFIRE spectrum in Y band, the high-ionization CIV 1548,1550 doublet emiss…
