In this thesis we are interested in the problem of dark energy in cosmology. In particular, we consider the possibility that this effect is due to an infrared non-local modification of the theory of General Relativity. Inspired by massive gravity, we construct non-local theories in which gravity may be massive, but where the symmetry of diffeomorphisms is preserved. We focus on the cosmology of these theories and confront them with observational constraints. On a more theoretical level, we discuss some subtleties of non-local field theory and address in a novel way the issue of stability. This thesis is based on both published and original work.
It is shown that a weak modification of general relativity, in the linearized approach, renders a spherically symmetric and stationary model of the universe. This is due to the presence of a third mode of polarization in the linearized gravity in which a "curvature" energy term is present. Such an energy can, in principle, be identified as the Dark Energy. The model can also help to a better understanding of the framework of the Einstein-Vlasov system.
In earlier work it was shown that a weak modification of general relativity, in the linearized approach, renders a spherically symmetric and stationary model of the Universe. This was due to the presence of a third mode of polarization in the linearized gravity in which a "curvature energy" term is present. Such term was identified as the Dark Energy of the Universe. In this letter a more realistic model is discussed. A different cosmological solution to the Einstein-Vlasov System is analysed. This solution shows reasonable results which are within the standard bounds predicted by the cosmolog…
The production of a stochastic background of relic gravitational waves is well known in various works in the literature, where, using the so called adiabatically-amplified zero-point fluctuations process it has been shown how the standard inflationary scenario for the early universe can in principle provide a distinctive spectrum of relic gravitational waves. In this paper, it is shown that a weak modification of General Relativity produces a third massive polarization of gravitational waves and the primordial production of this polarization is analysed adapting the adiabatically-amplified zer…
By using the Gitman-Lyakhovich-Tyutin canonical analysis for higher-order theories a four-dimensional Chern-Simons modification of general relativity is analyzed. The counting of physical degrees of freedom, the symmetries, and the fundamental Dirac brackets are reported. Additionally, we report the complete structure of the constraints and its Dirac algebra is developed.
A screening mechanism for conformal vector-tensor modifications of general relativity is proposed. The conformal factor depends on the norm of the vector field and makes the field to vanish in high dense regions, whereas drives it to a non-null value in low density environments. Such process occurs due to a spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism and gives rise to both the screening of fifth forces as well as Lorentz violations. The cosmology and local constraints are also computed.
Any modification on gravity would affect not only gravitational wave (GW) generation but also GW propagation. Therefore, tests of general relativity (GR) with only GW generation or GW propagation will lead to an overestimate for deviations. Here we try to use one set of parameters to parameterize the modifications on both GW generation and GW propagation and then test GR with GW150914. In our simplest case, we find that graviton mass $μ<6.3\times10^{-23}{\rm eV/c^2}$ at $90\%$ C.L. and there are no deviations from GR at $90\%$ C.L..
In the context of departures from Special Relativity written as a momentum power expansion in the inverse of an ultraviolet energy scale M, we derive the constraints that the relativity principle imposes between coefficients of a deformed composition law, dispersion relation, and transformation laws, at first order in the power expansion. In particular, we find that, at that order, the consistency of a modification of the energy-momentum composition law fixes the modification in the dispersion relation. We therefore obtain the most generic modification of Special Relativity that preserves the …
General relativity is extended by promoting the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons term to four dimensions. This entails choosing an embedding coordinate v_μ-- an external quantity, which we fix to be a non-vanishing constant in its time component. The theory is identical to one in which the embedding coordinate is itself a dynamical variable, rather than a fixed, external quantity. Consequently diffeomorphism symmetry breaking is hidden in the modified theory: the Schwarzschild metric is a solution; gravitational waves possess two polarizations, each traveling at the velocity of lig…
We investigate the possibility of testing short distance modifications to General Relativity via higher curvature terms in the fundamental gravity Lagrangian by analysing their impact on observations of spinning astronomical binary systems. By using effective field theory methods applied to the 2-body problem, generic lower bounds on the short-distance scale accompanying high curvature terms can be set. In particular we extend known results by deriving spin-dependent effects in binding energy, radiation emission process, and spin precession equations in binary systems, which are the fundamenta…

Cold Dark Stars made of self-gravitating fermions in the degenerate limit are constructed in General Relativity and in R-square gravity, $f(R)=R+αR^2$. The properties of the resulting Cold Dark Stars in both theories of gravity are studied. It is found that the same gravitational potential is generated for different election of the parameters of the model, such as the mass of the fermion, the self-interacting strength or the value of $α$, thus, a possible confusion in the determination of the dark matter properties and the favored theory of gravity might arise.
We continue our investigation of massive gravity in the massless limit of vanishing graviton mass. From gauge invariance we derive the most general coupling between scalar matter and gravity. We get further couplings beside the standard coupling to the energy-momentum tensor. On the classical level this leads to a further modification of general relativity.
We estimate the changes in solar system tests of general relativity when "dark energy" arises from a Weyl scaling invariant action, using the modified Schwarzschild-like spherically symmetric solution obtained in this case by Adler and Ramazano\vglu. We show that the standard results of general relativity are modified by amounts that are far below current experimental errors. However, because the metric is not conformally flat when the central mass $M$ vanishes, there is a contribution to light deflection proportional to the cosmological constant $Λ$, with opposite sign to the one proportional…
We apply the dynamical systems tools to study the asymptotic properties of a cosmological model based on a non-linear modification of General Relativity in which the standard Einstein-Hilbert action is replaced by one of Dirac-Born-Infeld type. It is shown that the dynamics of this model is extremely rich: there are found equilibrium points in the phase space that can be associated with matter-dominated, matter-curvature scaling, de Sitter, and even phantom-like solutions. Depending on the value of the overall parameters the dynamics in phase space can show multi-attractor structure into the f…
Gravitational wave observations of compact binaries allow us to test general relativity (and modifications thereof) in the strong and highly-dynamical field regime of gravity. Here we confront two extensions to general relativity, dynamical Chern-Simons and Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet theories, against the gravitational wave sources from the GWTC-1 and GWTC-2 catalogs by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration. By stacking the posterior of individual events, we strengthen the constraint on the square root of the coupling parameter in Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity to $\sqrt{α_{\rm \tiny EdGB}} <…
We present an observation about the proposal that four-dimensional modification of general relativity may explain the observed cosmic acceleration today. Assuming that the thermodynamical nature of gravity theory continues to hold in modified gravity theories, we derive the modified horizon entropy formula from the modified Friedmann equation. We argue that our results imply that there are conceptual problems in some models of four-dimensional modification of general relativity.
We review our contribution to infrared Renormalization Group (RG) effects to General Relativity in the context of galaxies. Considering the effective action approach to Quantum Field Theory in curved background, we argued that the proper RG energy scale, in the weak field limit, should be related to the Newtonian potential. In the galaxy context, even without dark matter, this led to a remarkably small gravitational coupling G variation (about or less than 10^{-12} of its value per light-year), while also capable of generating galaxy rotation curves about as good as the best phenomenological d…
Recently it was shown that the quantum vacuum effects of massless chiral fermion field in curved space-time leads to the parity-violating Pontryagin density term, which appears in the trace anomaly with imaginary coefficient. In the present work the anomaly-induced effective action with the parity-violating term is derived. The result is similar to the Chern-Simons modified general relativity, which was extensively studied in the last decade, but with the kinetic terms for the scalar different from those considered previously in the literature. The parity-breaking term makes no effect on the z…
We consider spatially covariant modified gravity in which the would-be scalar degree of freedom is made non-dynamical and hence there are just two tensorial degrees of freedom, i.e., the same number of dynamical degrees of freedom as in general relativity. Focusing on a class of such modified gravity theories characterized by three functions of time, we discuss how modified gravity with two tensorial degrees of freedom can be distinguished observationally or phenomenologically from general relativity. It is checked that the theory gives the same predictions as general relativity for weak gravi…
We discuss static spherically symmetric solutions in a recently proposed non-local infrared modification of Einstein equations induced by a term $m^2g_{μν}\Box^{-1} R$, where $m$ is a mass scale. We find that, contrary to what happens in usual theories of massive gravity, in this non-local theory there is no vDVZ discontinuity and classical non-linearities do not become large below a Vainshtein radius parametrically larger than the Schwarzschild radius $r_S$. Rather on the contrary, in the regime $r\ll m^{-1}$ the corrections to the metric generated by a static body in GR are of the form $1+{\…
General relativity is incomplete because it cannot describe quantum effects of space-time. The complete theory of quantum gravity is not yet known and to date no observational evidence exists that space-time is quantized. However, in most approaches to quantum gravity the space-time manifold of general relativity is only an effective limit that, among other things like higher curvature terms, should receive corrections stemming from space-time defects. We here develop a modification of general relativity that describes local space-time defects and solve the Friedmann equations. From this, we o…
In the first part of the thesis, and after an introduction to certain models of modified gravity, we study consistent Lagrangians for Lorentz invariant (massive and massless) spin-2 and spin-3/2 particles in flat space. The second part of the dissertation is devoted to non-linear extensions for the spin-2 case, focusing on unimodular gravity and bigravity. Both theories lead to modifications of General Relativity at large distances and we will study exact solutions, causal structure of those solutions, and perturbation theory (specially for the Lorentz breaking case). Some comments on quantiza…
The Higher Order Theories of Gravity - $f(R, R_{αβ}R^{αβ})$ - theory, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $R_{αβ}$ is the Ricci tensor and $f$ is any analytic function - have recently attracted a lot of interest as alternative candidates to explain the observed cosmic acceleration, the flatness of the rotation curves of spiral galaxies and other relevant astrophysical phenomena. It is a crucial point testing these alternative theories in the so called weak field and newtonian limit of a $f(R, R_{αβ}R^{αβ})$ - theory. With this "perturbation technique" it is possible to find spherically symmetric so…
We modify the Einstein-Schrodinger theory to include a cosmological constant $Λ_z$ which multiplies the symmetric metric, and we show how the theory can be easily coupled to additional fields. The cosmological constant $Λ_z$ is assumed to be nearly cancelled by Schrodinger's cosmological constant $Λ_b$ which multiplies the nonsymmetric fundamental tensor, such that the total $Λ=Λ_z+Λ_b$ matches measurement. The resulting theory becomes exactly Einstein-Maxwell theory in the limit as $|Λ_z|\to\infty$. For $|Λ_z|\sim 1/(Planck length)^2$ the field equations match the ordinary Einstein and Maxwel…
The different forms of the Hamiltonian formulations of linearized General Relativity/spin-two theories are discussed in order to show their similarities and differences. It is demonstrated that in the linear model, non-covariant modifications to the initial covariant Lagrangian (similar to those modifications used in full gravity) are in fact unnecessary. The Hamiltonians and the constraints are different in these two formulations but the structure of the constraint algebra and the gauge invariance derived from it are the same. It is shown that these equivalent Hamiltonian formulations are rel…
In four space-time dimensions, there exists a special infinite-parameter family of chiral modified gravity theories. They are most properly described by a connection field, with space-time metric being a secondary and derived concept. All these theories have the same number of degrees of freedom as general relativity, which is the only parity-invariant member of this family. Modifications of general relativity can be arranged so as to become important in regions with large curvature. In this paper we review how a certain simple modification of this sort can resolve the Schwarzschild black-hole…
In this article we develop a physical interpretation for the deformed (doubly) special relativity theories (DSRs), based on a modification of the theory of measurement in special relativity. We suggest that it is useful to regard the DSRs as reflecting the manner in which quantum gravity effects induce Planck-suppressed distortions in the measurement of the "true" energy and momentum. This interpretation provides a framework for the DSRs that is manifestly consistent, non-trivial, and in principle falsifiable. However, it does so at the cost of demoting such theories from the level of "fundame…
We study the cosmological consequences of a recently proposed nonlocal modification of general relativity, obtained by adding a term $m^2R\,\Box^{-2}R$ to the Einstein-Hilbert action. The model has the same number of parameters as $Λ$CDM, with $m$ replacing $Ω_Λ$, and is very predictive. At the background level, after fixing $m$ so as to reproduce the observed value of $Ω_M$, we get a pure prediction for the equation of state of dark energy as a function of redshift, $w_{\rm DE}(z)$, with $w_{\rm DE}(0)$ in the range $[-1.165,-1.135]$ as $Ω_M$ varies over the broad range $Ω_M\in [0.20,0.36]$. …
The huge amounts of undetected and exotic dark matter and dark energy needed to make general relativity work on large scales argue that we should investigate modifications of gravity. The only stable, metric-based and invariant alternative to general relativity is $f(R)$ models. These models can explain primordial inflation, but they cannot dispense with either dark matter or dark energy. I advocate nonlocal modifications of gravity, not as new fundamental theories but rather as the gravitational vacuum polarization engendered by infrared quanta produced during primordial inflation. I also dis…
This talk presents: (a) A quantum-mechanically induced violation of the principle of equivalence, and (b) Gravitationally-induced modification to the wave particle duality. In this context I note that the agreement between the predictions of general relativity and observations of the energy loss due to gravitational waves emitted by binary pulsars is just as impressive as the agreement between prediction of quantum electrodynamics and the measured value of Lamb shift in atoms. However, general relativity has not yet yielded to a successful quantised theory. There is a widespread belief that th…
We propose a modification of special relativity in which a physical energy, which may be the Planck energy, joins the speed of light as an invariant, in spite of a complete relativity of inertial frames and agreement with Einstein's theory at low energies. This is accomplished by a non-linear modification of the action of the Lorentz group on momentum space, generated by adding a dilatation to each boost in such a way that the Planck energy remains invariant. The associated algebra has unmodified structure constants, and we highlight the similarities between the group action found and a transf…
Locality of interactions is an essential ingredient of Special Relativity. Recently, a new framework under the name of relative locality \cite{AmelinoCamelia:2011bm} has been proposed as a way to consider Planckian modifications of the relativistic dynamics of particles. We note in this paper that the loss of absolute locality is a general feature of theories beyond Special Relativity with an implementation of a relativity principle. We give an explicit construction of such an implementation and compare it both with the previously mentioned framework of relative locality and the so-called Doub…
In the present work we will introduce and prove a topological invariant term in General Relativity involving the torsion tensor that has never been showed before. Such a term is a slight modification of the Nieh-Yan four-form and likewise it stems from a Chern-Simons three-form. We provide the proof in both holonomic and orthogonal basis and show that its integral reduces to a boundary term that vanishes with the right conditions. As all topological invariant objects the new term does not affect the Einstein field equations in pure gravity, but when matter fields couple to the gravitational fi…
We find a simple modification of the longitudinal mode in General Relativity which incorporates the idea of limiting curvature. In this case the singularities in contracting Friedmann and Kasner universes are avoided, and instead, the universe has a regular bounce which takes place during the time inversely proportional to the square root of the limiting curvature. Away from the bounce, corrections to General Relativity are negligible. In addition the non-singluar modification of General Relativity delivers for free a realistic candidate for Dark Matter.
General Relativity has shown an outstanding observational success in the scales where it has been directly tested. However, modifications have been intensively explored in the regimes where it seems either incomplete or signals its own limit of validity. In particular, the breakdown of unitarity near the Planck scale strongly suggests that General Relativity needs to be modified at high energies and quantum gravity effects are expected to be important. This is related to the existence of spacetime singularities when the solutions of General Relativity are extrapolated to regimes where curvatur…
We discuss the cosmological consequences of a model based on a non-local infrared modification of Einstein equations. We find that the model generates a dynamical dark energy that can account for the presently observed value of $Ω_{\rm DE}$, without introducing a cosmological constant. Tuning a free mass parameter $m$ to a value $m\simeq 0.67 H_0$ we reproduce the observed value $Ω_{\rm DE}\simeq 0.68$. This leaves us with no free parameter and we then get a pure prediction for the EOS parameter of dark energy. Writing $w_{\rm DE}(a)=w_0+(1-a) w_a$, we find $w_0\simeq-1.04$ and $w_a\simeq -0.0…
We consider the observation of stellar-mass black holes binaries with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Preliminary results based on Fisher information matrix analyses have suggested that gravitational waves from those sources could be very sensitive to possible deviations from the theory of general relativity and from the strong equivalence principle during the low-frequency binary inspiral. We perform a full Markov Chain Monte Carlo Bayesian analysis to quantify the sensitivity of these signals to two phenomenological modifications of general relativity, namely a putative gravit…
We explore the internal structures of the white dwarfs in two different modified theories of gravity: (i) scalar-tensor-vector gravity and (ii) beyond Horndeski theories of $G_3$ type. The modification of the gravitational force inside the white dwarf results in the modification of the mass and radius of the white dwarf. We use observational data from various astrophysical probes including $\textit{Gaia}$ to test the validity of these two classes of modified theories of gravity. We update the constraints on the parameters controlling the deviation from general relativity (and Newtonian gravity…
The possibility of a modification of special relativity with an invariant energy scale playing the role of a minimum energy is explored. Consistency with the equivalence of different inertial frames is obtained by an appropriate choice of a non-linear action of the Lorentz group on momentum space. Limits on the low energy cutoff from tests of Einstein's theory and possible ways to measure the new energy scale are discussed.
Observations of gravitational radiation from compact binary systems provide an unprecedented opportunity to test General Relativity in the strong field dynamical regime. In this paper, we investigate how future observations of gravitational radiation from binary neutron star mergers might provide constraints on finite-range forces from a universally coupled massive scalar field. Such scalar degrees of freedom are a characteristic feature of many extensions of General Relativity. For concreteness, we work in the context of metric $f(R)$ gravity, which is equivalent to General Relativity and a u…
We examine an extension of General Relativity with an explicit non-minimal coupling between matter and curvature. The purpose of this work is to present an overview of the implications of the latter to various contexts, ranging from astrophysical matter distributions to a cosmological setting. Various results are discussed, including the impact of this non-minimal coupling on the choice of Lagrangian density, on a mechanism to mimic galactic and cluster dark matter, on the possibility of accounting for the accelerated expansion of the Universe, energy density fluctuations and modifications to …
We test General Relativity (GR) using current cosmological data: the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from WMAP5 (Komatsu et al. 2009), the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect from the cross-correlation of the CMB with six galaxy catalogs (Giannantonio et al. 2008), a compilation of supernovae Type Ia (SNe) including the latest SDSS SNe (Kessler et al. 2009), and part of the weak lensing (WL) data from CFHTLS (Fu et al. 2008, Kilbinger et al. 2009) that probe linear and mildly non-linear scales. We first test a model where the effective Newton's constant, mu, and the ratio of the two gravitat…
Gravity is understood as a geometrization of spacetime. But spacetime is also the manifold of the boundary values of the spinless point particle in a variational approach. Since all known matter, baryons, leptons and gauge bosons are spinning objects, it means that the manifold, which we call the kinematical space, where we play the game of the variational formalism of an elementary particle is greater than spacetime. This manifold for any mechanical system is a Finsler metric space such that the variational formalism can always be interpreted as a geodesic problem on this space. This manifold…
A new proposal for the notion of spacetime in a relativistic generalization of special relativity based on a modification of the composition law of momenta is presented. Locality of interactions is the principle which defines the spacetime structure for a system of particles. The formulation based on $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra is shown to be contained in this framework as a particular example.
In this paper, we have studied nonstationary radiative spherically symmetric spacetime, in general covariant theory ($U(1)$ extension) of {the} Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with the minimum coupling, in the post-newtonian approximation (PPN), without the projectability condition and in the infrared limit. The Newtonian prepotential $φ$ was assumed null. We have shown that there is not the analogue of the Vaidya's solution in the Hořava-Lifshitz Theory (HLT) with the minimum coupling, as we know in the General Relativity Theory (GRT).
We review an approach developed in the last few years by our group in which GR is modified in the infrared, at an effective level, by nonlocal terms associated to a mass scale. We begin by recalling the notion of quantum effective action and its associated nonlocalities, illustrating some of their features with the anomaly-induced effective actions in $D=2$ and $D=4$. We examine conceptual issues of nonlocal theories such as causality, degrees of freedoms and ghosts, stressing the importance of the fact that these nonlocalities only emerge at the effective level. We discuss a particular class …
The modification of the quantum mechanical commutators in a relativistic theory with an invariant length scale (DSR) is identified. Two examples are discussed where a classical behavior is approached in one case when the energy approaches the inverse of the invariant length which appears as a cutoff in the energy and in the second case when the mass is much larger than the inverse of the invariant length.
Metric theories of gravity are studied, beginning with a general action that is quadratic in curvature and allows infinite inverse powers of the d'Alembertian operator, resulting in infrared non-local extensions of general relativity. The field equations are derived in full generality and their consistency is checked by verifying the Bianchi identities. The weak-field limit is computed and a straightforward algorithm is presented to infer the post-Newtonian corrections directly from the action. We then apply this to various infrared gravity models including non-local $Rf(R/ \Box)$ cosmology an…
String theory imposes modifications to Einstein's equations of classical general relativity. Consequently, we calculate the additional corrections to the classical tests: the perihelion precession of Mercury, the deflection of light rays by the sun, and the gravitational redshift which should be present if these modified equations hold. In each case, we determine --- quite consistently with expectations --- that the stringy effects are much too small to be measured.
We reconsider a gauge theory of gravity in which the gauge group is the conformal group SO(4,2) and the action is of the Yang-Mills form, quadratic in the curvature. The resulting gravitational theory exhibits local conformal symmetry and reduces to Weyl-squared gravity under certain conditions. When the theory is linearized about flat spacetime, we find that matter which couples to the generators of special conformal transformations reproduces Newton's inverse square law. Conversely, matter which couples to generators of translations induces a constant and possibly repulsive force far from th…
