Enhancement of the electron spin polarization in a correlated two-layer two-dimensional electron system at a total Landau level filling factor of one is reported. Using resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance, we demonstrate that the electron spin polarization of two closely-spaced two-dimensional electron systems becomes maximized when inter-layer Coulomb correlations establish spontaneous isospin ferromagnetic order. This correlation-driven polarization dominates over the spin polarizations of competing single-layer fractional Quantum Hall states under electron density imbalances.
Magnetic fields quench the kinetic energy of two dimensional electrons, confining them to highly degenerate Landau levels. In the absence of disorder, the ground state at partial Landau level filling is determined only by Coulomb interactions, leading to a variety of correlation-driven phenomena. Here, we realize a quantum Hall analog of the Neél-to-valence bond solid transition within the spin- and sublattice- degenerate monolayer graphene zero energy Landau level by experimentally controlling substrate-induced sublattice symmetry breaking. The transition is marked by unusual isospin transiti…

The interplay between quantum Hall ordering and spontaneously broken "internal" symmetries in two-dimensional electron systems with spin or pseudospin degrees of freedom gives rise to a variety of interesting phenomena, including novel phases, phase transitions, and topological excitations. Here we develop a theory of broken-symmetry quantum Hall states, applicable to a class of multi-valley systems, where the symmetry at issue is a point group element that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The anisotropy of the dispersion relation, generally present in such sys…
A number of quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states have been predicted in the relativistic zero Landau level (LL) of graphene monolayer. These states, especially the states at LL filling factor v = 0 of charge-neutral graphene, have been extensively explored in experiment. To date, identification of these high-field broken-symmetry states has mostly relied on macroscopic transport techniques. Here, we study splitting of the zero LL of graphene at partial filling and demonstrate a direct approach by imaging the QHIFM states at atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope. At hal…
The layered perovskite compound NaV_2O_5 exhibits charge ordering (CO) and spin gap formation which is driven by inter- site Coulomb forces and exchange dimerisation. Experimentally it was found that the CO transition is rapidly reduced by doping. Charge ordering in NaV_2O_5 has a quasi 1D character due to inter- ladder frustration in the Trellis lattice. Based on an extended pseudospin (T=1) approach for hole doped NaV_2O_5 ladders we construct an Ising like model that explains qualitatively the destruction of the CO phase as function of hole doping δand show how the CO parameter depends on δ…
We study the Kondo Lattice and Hubbard models on a triangular lattice for band filling factor 3/4. We show that a simple non-coplanar chiral spin ordering (scalar spin chirality) is naturally realized in both models due to perfect nesting of the Fermi surface. The resulting triple-Q magnetic ordering is a natural counterpart of the collinear Neel ordering of the half-filled square lattice Hubbard model. We show that the obtained chiral phase exhibits a spontaneous quantum Hall-effect with sigma_{xy}= e^2/h.
Quantum Hall states can be characterized by their chiral edge modes. Upon softening the edge potential, the edge has long been known to undergo spontaneous reconstruction driven by charging effects. In this paper we demonstrate a qualitatively distinct phenomenon driven by exchange effects, in which the ordering of the edge modes at $ν=3$ switches abruptly as the edge potential is made softer, while the ordering in the bulk remains intact. We demonstrate that this phenomenon is robust, and has many verifiable experimental signatures in transport.

We present the high-temperature (70 K < T < 300 K) resistivity anisotropy and Hall effect measurements of the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) organic conductor (TMTTF)2AsF6. The temperature variations of the resistivity are pronouncedly different for the three different directions, with metallic-like at high temperatures for the a-axis only. Above 220 K the Hall coefficient R_H is constant, positive and strongly enhanced over the expected value; and the corresponding carrier concentration is almost 100 times lower than calculated for one hole/unit cell. Our results give evidence for the existence o…
Temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the Hall effect of pure and 4 % Rh-doped URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ reveal low density (0.03 hole/U) high mobility carriers to be unique to the `hidden order' phase and consistent with an itinerant density-wave order parameter. The Fermi surface undergoes a series of abrupt changes as the magnetic field is increased. When combined with existing de Haas-van Alphen data, the Hall data expose a strong interplay between the stability of the `hidden order,' the degree of polarization of the Fermi liquid and the Fermi surface topology.
Valley-polarized quantum Hall states in graphene are described by a Heisenberg O(3) ferromagnet model, with the ordering type controlled by the strength and sign of valley anisotropy. A mechanism resulting from electron coupling to strain-induced gauge field, giving leading contribution to the anisotropy, is described in terms of an effective random magnetic field aligned with the ferromagnet z axis. We argue that such random field stabilizes the XY ferromagnet state, which is a coherent equal-weight mixture of the $K$ and $K'$ valley states. Other implications such as the Berezinskii-Kosterli…
We supplement a previously published calculation of the Hall effect in stripe ordered cuprates by presenting results for the physically relevant sign of the potential arising from charge ordering. The new results are more consistent with data, underscoring the importance of charge ordering in cuprates.
The study of electronic and magnetic properties of kagome lattice has been an active research area searching for topological phases of matters. In particular, the kagome system with transition metal stannides and etc exhibit interesting anomalous Hall effects driven by ferromagnetic or non-collinear magnetic ordering. In this paper, motivated by these pioneer works, we study strongly correlated spin-orbit coupled electrons in kagome lattice at 1/3 filling. Using both Hartree-Fock approach and effective model analysis, we report quantum phase transitions accompanied with distinct charge and mag…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram for the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice by a variational calculation for various spin orderings up to a four-site unit cell. We find that a noncoplanar four-sublattice ordering with a finite scalar spin chirality emerges at and around 1/4 filling, in addition to the 3/4-filled case, which was predicted to be induced by the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface [I. Martin and C. D. Batista: Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101} (2008) 156402]. The 1/4-filling phase is stable in a wider range of parameters than the 3/4-filling one, and …
Motivated by recent experiments on the observation of room temperature skyrmions in a layered heterostructure and subsequent demonstration of topological Hall effect in the same system, we have studied a minimal model of itinerant electrons coupled to local moments with competing interactions in an external magnetic field. Working in the limit of strong magneto-electric coupling where the fast dynamics of the electrons can be decoupled from the slow dynamics of the local moments (treated as classical spins), we analyze the multiple field induced magnetic phases and the associated electronic tr…
Dynamical correlations of Jeff = 1/2 isospins in the paramagnetic state of spin-orbital Mott insu- lator Sr2IrO4 was revealed by resonant magnetic x-ray diffuse scattering. We found two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuation with a large in-plane correlation length exceeding 100 lattice spacings at even 20 K above the mangnetic ordering temperature. In marked contrast to the naive expecta- tion of strong magnetic anisotropy associated with an enhanced spin-orbit coupling, we discovered isotropic isospin correlation that is well described by the two-dimensional S = 1/2 quantum Heisen- berg m…
We study the recently observed graphene fractional quantum Hall state at a filling factor $ν_G=1/3$ using a four-component trial wave function and exact diagonalization calculations. Although it is adiabatically connected to a 1/3 Laughlin state in the upper spin branch, with SU(2) valley-isospin ferromagnetic ordering and a completely filled lower spin branch, it reveals physical properties beyond such a state that is the natural ground state for a large Zeeman effect. Most saliently, it possesses at experimentally relevant values of the Zeeman gap low-energy spin-flip excitations that may be…
Measurements of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility and Hall effect of $Pr_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3$ single crystal are reported. The various features are discussed in terms of competing electronic and spin ordering phase transitions, in particular concerning the $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ competition and its effect on spin ordering.
We study spin and valley ordering in the quantum Hall fractions in monolayer graphene at Landau level filling factors $ν_G=-2+n/3$ $(n=2,4,5)$. We use exact diagonalizations on the spherical as well as toroidal geometry by taking into account the effect of realistic anisotropies that break the spin/valley symmetry of the pure Coulomb interaction. We also use a variational method based on eigenstates of the fully $SU(4)$ symmetric limit. For all the fractions we study there are two-component states for which the competing phases are generalizations of those occurring at neutrality $ν_G=0$. They…
A local photo-response of an asymmetric quantum Hall system in tilted magnetic field is demonstrated to be a complicate non-monotonic function of macroscopic distances to the sample edges. A local photo-response in the dark has been observed caused by illumination of the sample arias remote on a macroscopic distances. These macroscopic-range correlatons indicate the presence of a macroscopic ordering of electrons in the system.
An anomalous Hall insulator without magnetic long-range ordering is theoretically reported in the absence of the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. It is realized in itinerant electrons coupled with the Ising spins on a <111> kagome plane of pyrochlore spin ice in applied magnetic field. We find that the kagome-ice type local spin correlation in the magnetization plateau state opens a charge gap without magnetic ordering, which results in quantization of the Hall conductivity. By Monte Carlo simulation, we identify the anomalous Hall insulating region in the magnetic phase diagram, in addition …
We study the the interplay between spontaneously broken valley symmetry and spatial disorder in multivalley semiconductors in the quantum Hall regime. In cases where valleys have anisotropic electron dispersion a previous long-wavelength analysis [Phys. Rev. B 82, 035428 (2010)] identified two new phases exhibiting the QHE. The first is the quantum Hall Ising nematic (QHIN), a phase with long-range orientational order manifested in macroscopic transport anisotropies. The second is the quantum Hall random-field paramagnet (QHRFPM) that emerges when the Ising ordering is disrupted by quenched di…
A number of strongly correlated heavy fermion compounds, such as samarium (Sm), ytterbium (Yb), plutonium (Pu) hexaboride, are predicted to become topological insulators at low temperatures. These systems support massless Dirac fermions near certain (three) points of the surface Brillouin zone, hereafter referred to as the valleys. In strong perpendicular magnetic fields, the conical Dirac dispersions of these surface states quench onto three sets of Landau levels and we predict various possible hierarchies of incompressible quantum Hall states on the surface of hexaborides. In addition, we ad…
We show that non-abelian quantum Hall states can be identified by experimental measurements of the temperature-dependence of either the electrochemical potential or the orbital magnetization. The predicted signals of non-abelian statistics are within experimental resolution, and can be clearly distinguished from other contributions under realistic circumstances. The proposed measurement technique also has the potential to resolve spin-ordering transitions in low density electronic systems in the Wigner crystal and strongly-interacting Luttinger liquid regimes.
At high magnetic fields, monolayer graphene hosts competing phases distinguished by their breaking of the approximate SU(4) isospin symmetry. Recent experiments have observed an even denominator fractional quantum Hall state thought to be associated with a transition in the underlying isospin order from a spin-singlet charge density wave at low magnetic fields to an antiferromagnet at high magnetic fields, implying that a similar transition must occur at charge neutrality. However, this transition does not generate contrast in typical electrical transport or thermodynamic measurements and no d…
The wavefuntion of conduction electrons moving in the background of a non-coplanar spin structure can gain a quantal phase - Berry phase - as if the electrons were moving in a strong fictitious magnetic field. Such an emergent magnetic field effect is approximately proportional to the solid angle subtended by the spin moments on three neighbouring spin sites, termed the scalar spin chirality. The entire spin chirality of the crystal, unless macroscopically canceled, causes the geometrical Hall effect of real-space Berry-phase origin, whereas the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in a conve…
Strongly correlated quantum systems in low dimensions often exhibit novel quantum ordering. This ordering is sometimes hidden and can be revealed only by examining new `dual' types of correlations. Such ordering leads to novel collective modes and fractional quantum numbers. Examples will be presented from quantum spin chains and the quantum Hall effect.
We argue that in the quarter-filled ladder compound NaV_2O_5 the quasi-one-dimensional spin system is strongly coupled to a low-energy antiferroelectric mode of the excitonic type. This mode results from the interplay between the electron hopping along the rungs of the vanadium two-leg ladders and the Coulomb repulsion between electrons. The charge ordering observed in sodium vanadate at T_c = 34K corresponds to the softening of the antiferroelectric mode. We consider the spin-isospin model, which describes the spin and low-energy charge degrees of freedom in sodium vanadate. Within this model…
We theoretically investigate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that requires neither a net magnetization nor an external magnetic field in collinear antiferromagnets. We show that such an emergent AHE is essentially caused by a ferroic ordering of the anisotropic magnetic dipole (AMD), which provides an effective coupling between ordered magnetic moments and electronic motion in the crystal. We demonstrate that the AMD is naturally induced by the antiferromagnetic ordering, in which the magnetic moments have a quadrupole spatial distribution. In view of the ferroic AMD ordering, we analyze the b…
A mean field calculation of the $T\to 0$ limit of the Hall conductance of electron-doped cuprates such as $Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+δ}$ is presented. The data are found to be qualitatively consistent with the reconstruction of the Fermi surface expected upon density wave ordering. The magnitude of the density wave gap is found to be large. The Hall resistance exhibits a nonanalyticity at the quantum critical point for density wave ordering, but the amplitude of the anomaly is found to be unobservably small. The quantum critical contribution to $R_H(B)$ is determined. Quantitative discrepancies betwe…
High fidelity pressure measurements in the zero temperature limit provide a unique opportunity to study the behavior of strongly interacting, itinerant electrons with coupled spin and charge degrees of freedom. Approaching the exactitude that has become the hallmark of experiments on classical critical phenomena, we characterize the quantum critical behavior of the model, elemental antiferromagnet chromium, lightly doped with vanadium. We resolve the sharp doubling of the Hall coefficient at the quantum critical point and trace the dominating effects of quantum fluctuations up to surprisingly …
The two-dimensional Hubbard model defined for topological band structures exhibiting a quantum spin Hall effect poses fundamental challenges in terms of phenomenological characterization and microscopic classification. In the limit of infinite coupling U at half filling, the spin model Hamiltonians resulting from a strong coupling expansion show various forms of magnetic ordering phenomena depending on the underlying spin-orbit coupling terms. We investigate the infinite U limit of the Kane-Mele Hubbard model with z-axis intrinsic spin-orbit coupling as well as its generalization to a generica…
Topological magnon bands and magnon Hall effect in insulating collinear ferromagnets are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) even at zero magnetic field. In the geometrically frustrated star lattice, a coplanar/noncollinear $\mathbf q=0$ magnetic ordering may be present due to spin frustration. This magnetic structure, however, does not exhibit topological magnon effects even with DMI in contrast to collinear ferromagnets. We show that a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the star plane induces a non-coplanar spin configuration with nonzero spin scalar chirality, which …
The observed quantization of the Hall conductivity in graphene at high magnetic fields is explained as being due to the dynamically generated spatial modulation of either the electron spin or the density, as decided by the details of Coulomb interaction on the scale of lattice constant. It is predicted that at a large in-plane component of the magnetic field such ordering will be present only at the filling factor |f|=1, and absent otherwise. Other experimental consequences of the theory are outlined.
It is widely believed that integer quantum Hall systems do not have fractional excitations. Here we show the converse to be true for a class of systems where integer quantum Hall effect emerges spontaneously due to the interplay of itinerant electrons and noncoplanar magnetic ordering. We show that magnetic $Z_2$ vortices in such systems, whose topological stability is guaranteed by the structure of the order parameter, indeed carry fractional charge.
We extend the quantum Hall matrix model to include couplings to external electric and magnetic fields. The associated current suffers from matrix ordering ambiguities even at the classical level. We calculate the linear response at low momenta -- this is unambigously defined. In particular, we obtain the correct fractional quantum Hall conductivity, and the expected density modulations in response to a weak and slowly varying magnetic field. These results show that the classical quantum Hall matrix models describe important aspects of the dynamics of electrons in the lowest Landau level. In th…
Gapless electronic systems containing topologically nontrivial Fermi points are sources of various topological insulators. Whereas most of these special band-crossing points are built in the electronic structure of the non-interacting lattice models, we show that a quadratic Fermi point characterized by a non-zero winding number emerges with a collinear triple-Q spin-density-wave state that arises from a perfectly nested but topologically trivial Fermi surface. We obtain a universal low-energy Hamiltonian for the quadratic Fermi point and show that such collinear orderings are unstable against…
Monolayer graphene at neutrality in the quantum Hall regime has many competing ground states with various types of ordering. The outcome of this competition is modified by the presence of the sample boundaries. In this paper we use a Hartree-Fock treatment of the electronic correlations allowing for space-dependent ordering. The edge influence is modeled by a simple perturbative effective magnetic field in valley space. We find that all phases found in the bulk of the sample, ferromagnetic, canted antiferromagnetic, charge-density wave and Kekul$é$ distortion are smoothly connected to a Kekul$…
The interaction between electrons in graphene under high magnetic fields drives the formation of a rich set of quantum Hall ferromagnetic phases (QHFM), with broken spin or valley symmetry. Visualizing atomic scale electronic wavefunctions with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we resolve microscopic signatures of valley ordering in QHFM and fractional quantum Hall phases of graphene. At charge neutrality, we observe a field-tuned continuous quantum phase transition from a valley polarized state to an intervalley coherent state, with a Kekule distortion of its electronic density. Mapping …
It was recently pointed out that topological liquid phases arising in the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) are not required to be rotationally invariant, as most variational wavefunctions proposed to date have been. Instead, they possess a geometric degree of freedom corresponding to a shear deformation that acts like an intrinsic metric. We apply this idea to a system with an anisotropic band mass, as is intrinsically the case in many-valley semiconductors such as AlAs and Si, or in isotropic systems like GaAs in the presence of a tilted magnetic field, which breaks the rotational invari…
The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect has been recently discovered in experiment using thin-film topological insulator with ferromagnetic ordering and strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we investigate the spin degree of freedom of a QAH insulator and uncover a fundamental phenomenon that the edge states exhibit topologically stable spin texture in the boundary when a chiral-like symmetry is present. This result shows that edge states are chiral in both the orbital and spin degrees of freedom, and the chiral edge spin texture corresponds to the bulk topological states of the QAH insulator. We a…
Two-dimensional electron gases in strong magnetic fields provide a canonical platform for realizing a variety of electronic ordering phenomena. Here we review the physics of one intriguing class of interaction-driven quantum Hall states: quantum Hall valley nematics. These phases of matter emerge when the formation of a topologically insulating quantum Hall state is accompanied by the spontaneous breaking of a point-group symmetry that combines a spatial rotation with a permutation of valley indices. The resulting orientational order is particularly sensitive to quenched disorder, while quantu…
New phase of matter usually emerges when a given symmetry breaks spontaneously, which can involve charge, spin, and valley degree of freedoms. Here, we report an observation of new correlated insulators evolved from spin polarized states to valley polarized states in AB-BA stacked twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). The transition of the isospin polarization is a result of the competition between spin and valley, driven by the displacement field (D). At a high field |D| > 0.7 V/nm, we observe valley polarized correlated insulators with a big Zeeman g factor of ~10, both at v = 2 in the moi…
Motivated to understand the nature of the strongly insulating $ν=0$ quantum Hall state in bilayer graphene, we develop the theory of the state in the framework of quantum Hall ferromagnetism. The generic phase diagram, obtained in the presence of the isospin anisotropy, perpendicular electric field, and Zeeman effect, consists of the spin-polarized ferromagnetic (F), canted antiferromagnetic (CAF), and partially (PLP) and fully (FLP) layer-polarized phases. We address the edge transport properties of the phases. Comparing our findings with the recent data on suspended dual-gated devices, we co…
We investigate the behavior of the Hall coefficient in the case of antiferromagnetism driven by Fermi surface nesting, and find that the Hall coefficient should abruptly increase with the onset of magnetism, as recently observed in vanadium doped chromium. This effect is due to the sudden removal of flat portions of the Fermi surface upon magnetic ordering. Within this picture, the Hall coefficient should scale as the square of the residual resistivity divided by the impurity concentration, which is consistent with available data.
We study the behavior of the quarter-filled Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice by combining a zero-temperature variational approach and finite-temperature Monte-Carlo simulations. For intermediate coupling between itinerant electrons and classical moments ${\bf S}_j$, we find a thermodynamic phase transition into an exotic spin ordering with uniform scalar spin chirality and $< {\bf S}_j >=0$. The state exhibits spontaneous quantum Hall effect. We also study how its properties are affected by application of an external magnetic field.
In the search for mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity it is critical to know the electronic spectrum in the pseudogap phase from which superconductivity evolves. The lack of angle-resolved photoemission data for every cuprate family precludes an agreement as to its structure, doping and temperature dependence and the role of charge ordering. Here we show that, in the entire Fermi-liquid-like regime that is ubiquitous in underdoped cuprates, the spectrum consists of holes on the Fermi arcs and an electronic pocket. We argue that experiments on the Hall coefficient identify the latt…
We theoretically study the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in perovskites with antiferromagnetic (AFM) orderings. By studying the multiorbital Hubbard model for $d$ electrons in perovskite transition metal oxides under the GdFeO$_3$-type distortion within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we investigate the behavior of intrinsic AHE owing to the atomic spin-orbit coupling via the linear response theory. We consider the cases where there exist two ($d^2$) and three ($d^3$) electrons in the $t_{2g}$ orbitals, and show that AFM ordered states can exhibit AHE. In the $d^2$ case, $C$-type AFM states give…
We investigated the transport properties of the quasi one-dimensional organic metal (TMTSF)2ReO4 above the anion-ordering metal-insulator transition (T_{AO} \approx 180K). The pronounced conductivity anisotropy, a small and smoothly temperature dependent Hall effect, and a small, positive and temperature dependent magnetoresistance are analyzed within the existing Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi liquid models. We propose that the transport properties of quasi one-dimensional Bechgaard salts at high temperatures can be described within the Fermi liquid description.
We report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall effect in twisted bilayer graphene showing Hall resistance quantized to within .1\% of the von Klitzing constant $h/e^2$ at zero magnetic field. The effect is driven by intrinsic strong correlations, which polarize the electron system into a single spin and valley resolved moiré miniband with Chern number $C=1$. In contrast to extrinsic, magnetically doped systems, the measured transport energy gap $Δ/k_B\approx 27$~K is larger than the Curie temperature for magnetic ordering $T_C\approx 9$~K, and Hall quantization persists to temperatures o…
