We used x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy to study the dynamics in the lamellar phase of a platelet suspension as a function of the particle concentration. We measured the collective diffusion coefficient along the director of the phase, over length scales down to the interparticle distance, and quantified the hydrodynamic interaction between the particles. This interaction sets in with increasing concentration and can be described qualitatively by a simplified model. No change in the microscopic structure or dynamics is observed at the transition between the fluid and the gel-like lamellar phases.
In colloidal suspensions, the competition between attractive and repulsive interactions gives rise to a rich and complex phenomenology. Here, we study the equilibrium phase diagram of a model system using a DLVO interaction potential by means of molecular dynamics simulations and a thermodynamical approach. As a result, we find tubular and lamellar phases at low volume fraction. Such phases, extremely relevant for designing new materials, may be not easily observed in the experiments because of the long relaxation times and the presence of defects.
Colloidal systems find important applications ranging from fabrication of photonic crystals to direct probing of phenomena typically encountered in atomic crystals and glasses. New applications - such as nanoantennas, plasmonic sensors, and nanocircuits - pose a challenge of achieving sparse colloidal assemblies with tunable interparticle separations that can be controlled at will. We demonstrate reconfigurable multiscale interactions and assembly of colloids mediated by defects in cholesteric liquid crystals that are probed by means of laser manipulation and three-dimensional imaging. We find…
A concentrated suspension of lamellar colloidal particles (e. g. clay) is modelled by considering a single, uniformly charged, finite platelet confined with co- and counterions to a Wigner-Seitz (WS) cell. The system is treated within Poisson-Boltzmann theory, with appropriate boundary conditions on the surface of the WS cell, supposed to account for the confinement effect of neighbouring platelets. Expressions are obtained for the free energy, osmotic and disjoining pressures and the capacitance in terms of the local electrostatic potential and the co- and counterion density profiles. Explici…
We identify a finite wavenumber instability of a 90$^{\circ}$ tilt grain boundary in three dimensional lamellar phases which is absent in two dimensional configurations. Both a stability analysis of the slowly varying amplitude or envelope equation for the boundary, and a direct numerical solution of an order parameter model equation are presented. The instability mode involves two dimensional perturbations of the planar base boundary, and is suppressed for purely one dimensional perturbations. We find that both the most unstable wavenumbers and their growth rate increase with $ε$, the dimensi…
We investigate the swelling and shrinking of L_beta lamellar gel phases composed of surfactant and fatty alcohol after contact with aqueous poly(ethylene-glycol) solutions. The height change $Δh(t)$ is diffusion-like with a swelling coefficient, S: $Δh = S \sqrt{t}$. On increasing polymer concentration we observe sequentially slower swelling, absence of swelling, and finally shrinking of the lamellar phase. This behavior is summarized in a non-equilibrium diagram and the composition dependence of S quantitatively described by a generic model. We find a diffusion coefficient, the only free para…
When short-range attractions are combined with long-range repulsions in colloidal particle systems, complex microphases can emerge. Here, we study a system of isotropic particles which can form lamellar structures or a disordered fluid phase when temperature is varied. We show that at equilibrium the lamellar structure crystallizes, while out of equilibrium the system forms a variety of structures at different shear rates and temperatures above melting. The shear-induced ordering is analyzed by means of principal component analysis and artificial neural networks, which are applied to data of r…
We report on the rheology of a lamellar lyotropic surfactant solution (SDS/dodecane/pentanol/water), and identify a discontinuous transition between two shear thinning regimes which correspond to the low stress lamellar phase and the more viscous shear induced multi-lamellar vesicle, or ``onion'' phase. We study in detail the flow curve, stress as a function of shear rate, during the transition region, and present evidence that the region consists of a shear banded phase where the material has macroscopically separated into bands of lamellae and onions stacked in the vorticity direction. We in…
We introduce a model constitutive law for the dissipative stress tensor of lamellar phases to account for low frequency and long wavelength flows. Given the uniaxial symmetry of these phases, we argue that the stress tensor must be the same as that of a nematic but with the local order parameter being the slowly varying lamellar wavevector. This assumption leads to a dependence of the effective dynamic viscosity on orientation of the lamellar phase. We then consider a model configuration comprising a domain boundary separating laterally unbounded domains of so called parallel and perpendicular…
In this paper we present a detailed analytical study of the phase diagram and of the structural properties of a field theoretic model with a short-range attraction and a competing long-range screened repulsion. We provide a full derivation and expanded discussion and digression on results previously reported briefly in M. Tarzia and A. Coniglio, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 075702 (2006). The model contains the essential features of the effective interaction potential among charged colloids in polymeric solutions. We employ the self-consistent Hartree approximation and a replica approach, and we show …
The relaxation following a temperature quench of two-phase (lamellar and sponge phase) and three-phase (lamellar, sponge and micellar phase) samples, has been studied in an SDS/octanol/brine system. In the three-phase case we have observed samples that are initially mainly sponge phase with lamellar and micellar phase on the top and bottom respectively. Upon decreasing temperature most of the volume of the sponge phase is replaced by lamellar phase. During the equilibriation we have observed three regimes of behaviour within the sponge phase: (i) disruption in the sponge texture, then (ii) aft…
We study the effect of shear flow on the entropic Helfrich interaction in lyotropic surfactant smectic fluids. Arguing that flow induces an effective anisotropic surface tension in bilayers due to a combination of intermonolayer friction, bilayer collisions and convection, we calculate the reduction in fluctuations and hence the renormalised change in effective compression modulus and steady-state layer spacing. We demonstrate that non-permeable or slowly permeating membranes can be susceptible to a undulatory instability of the Helfrich-Hurault type, and speculate that such an instability cou…
We map out the solid-state morphologies formed by model soft-pearl-necklace polymers as a function of bending stiffness $k_b$ spanning the range from fully flexible to rodlike chains. The ratio of Kuhn length to bead diameter ($l_K/r_0$) increases monotonically with increasing $k_b$ and yields a one-parameter model that relates chain shape to bulk morphology and yields insights into the packing of anisotropic particles. In the flexible limit, monomers occupy the sites of close-packed crystallites while chains retain random-walk-like order. In the rodlike limit, nematic chain ordering typical o…
Roughening the surface of spherical colloids can drastically change their translational and rotational dynamics in dense suspensions. Using 3D confocal microscopy, we show that roughness not only lowers the concentration of the translational colloidal glass transition, but also generates a broad concentration range in which the rotational Brownian motion changes signature from high-amplitude diffusive to low-amplitude rattling. This hitherto not reported second glass transition for rough spherical colloids emerges when the particle intersurface distance becomes comparable to the roughness leng…
We study the effect of an externally imposed oscillatory shear on the motion of a grain boundary that separates differently oriented domains of the lamellar phase of a diblock copolymer. A direct numerical solution of the Swift-Hohenberg equation in shear flow is used for the case of a transverse/parallel grain boundary in the limits of weak nonlinearity and low shear frequency. We focus on the region of parameters in which both transverse and parallel lamellae are linearly stable. Shearing leads to excess free energy in the transverse region relative to the parallel region, which is in turn d…
We analyze the temporal fluctuations of the flow field associated to a shear-induced transition in a lyotropic lamellar phase: the layering transition of the onion texture. In the first part of this work [Salmon et al., submitted to Phys. Rev. E], we have evidenced banded flows at the onset of this shear-induced transition which are well accounted for by the classical picture of shear-banding. In the present paper, we focus on the temporal fluctuations of the flow field recorded in the coexistence domain. These striking dynamics are very slow (100--1000s) and cannot be due to external mechanic…

We present important new results from light-microscopy and rheometry on a moderately concentrated lyotropic smectic, with and without particulate additives. Shear-treatment aligns the phase rapidly, except for a striking network of oily-streak defects, which anneals out much more slowly. If spherical particles several microns in diameter are dispersed in the lamellar medium, part of the defect network persists under shear-treatment, its nodes anchored on the particles. The sample as prepared has substantial storage and loss moduli, both of which decrease steadily under shear-treatment. Adding …
We use a combination of original light scattering techniques and particles with unique optical properties to investigate the behavior of suspensions of attractive colloids under gravitational stress, following over time the concentration profile, the velocity profile, and the microscopic dynamics. During the compression regime, the sedimentation velocity grows nearly linearly with height, implying that the gel settling may be fully described by a (time-dependent) strain rate. We find that the microscopic dynamics exhibit remarkable scaling properties when time is normalized by strain rate, sho…
We study concentrated colloidal suspensions, a model system which has a glass transition. Samples in the glassy state show aging, in that the motion of the colloidal particles slows as the sample ages from an initial state. We study the relationship between the static structure and the slowing dynamics, using confocal microscopy to follow the three-dimensional motion of the particles. The structure is quantified by considering tetrahedra formed by quadruplets of neighboring particles. We find that while the sample clearly slows down during aging, the static properties as measured by tetrahedra…
Dynamical heterogeneities in a colloidal fluid close to gelation are studied by means of computer simulations. A clear distinction between some fast particles and the rest, slow ones, is observed, yielding a picture of the gel composed by two populations with different mobilities. Analyzing the statics and dynamics of both sets of particles, it is shown that the slow particles form a network of stuck particles, whereas the fast ones are able to move over long distances. Correlation functions show that the environment of the fast particles relaxes much faster than that of the slow ones, but at …
The aging dynamics of colloidal suspensions of Laponite, a synthetic clay, is investigated using dynamic light stattering (DLS) and viscometry after a quench into the glassy phase. DLS allows to follow the diffusion of Laponite particles and reveals that there are two modes of relaxation. The fast mode corresponds to a rapid diffusion of particles within "cages" formed by the neighboring particles. The slow mode corresponds to escape from the cages: its average relaxation time increases exponentially fast with the age of the glass. In addition, the slow mode has a broad distribution of relaxat…
Twist grain boundaries are widely observed in lamellar phases of block copolymers. A mesoscopic model of the copolymer is used to obtain stationary configurations that include a twist grain boundary, and to analyze their stability against long wavelength perturbations. The analysis presented is valid in the weak segregation regime, and includes direct numerical solution of the governing equations as well as a multiple scale analysis. We find that a twist boundary configuration with arbitrary misorientation angle can be well described by two modes, and obtain the equations for their slowly vary…
We use time-resolved X-Photon Correlation Spectroscopy to investigate the slow dynamics of colloidal gels made of moderately attractive carbon black particles. We show that the slow dynamics is temporally heterogeneous and quantify its fluctuations by measuring the variance $χ$ of the instantaneous intensity correlation function. The amplitude of dynamical fluctuations has a non-monotonic dependence on scattering vector $q$, in stark contrast with recent experiments on strongly attractive colloidal gels [Duri and Cipelletti, \textit{Europhys. Lett.} \textbf{76}, 972 (2006)]. We propose a simpl…
We investigate the stress relaxation behavior on the application of step strains to aging aqueous suspensions of the synthetic clay Laponite. The stress exhibits a two-step decay, from which the slow relaxation modes are extracted as functions of the sample ages and applied step strain deformations. Interestingly, the slow time scales that we estimate show a dramatic enhancement with increasing strain amplitudes. We argue that the system ends up exploring the deeper sections of its energy landscape following the application of the step strain.
Colloidal particles absorbed at the interface of a liquid droplet arrange into unique packings during slow evaporation (Manoharan et al. Science 301 pp 483-487). We present a numerical and theoretical analysis of the packing selection problem. The selection of a unique packing arises almost entirely from geometrical constraints during the drying.
Weakly attractive interactions between the tips of rod-like colloidal particles affect their liquid-crystal phase behaviour due to a subtle interplay between enthalpy and entropy. Here, we employ molecular dynamics simulations on semi-flexible, repulsive bead-spring chains of which one of the two end beads attract each other. We calculate the phase diagram as a function of both the volume fraction of the chains and the strength of the attractive potential. We identify a large number of phases that include isotropic, nematic, smectic A, smectic B and crystalline states. For tip attraction energ…
We observe the translational and rotational diffusion of dimer tracer particles in quasi-2D colloidal samples. The dimers are in dense samples of two different sizes of spherical colloidal particles, with the area fraction $ϕ$ of the particles varying from dilute to nearly glassy. At low $ϕ$ rotational and translational diffusion have a ratio set by the dimer size, as expected. At higher $ϕ$ dimers become caged by their neighboring particles, and both rotational and translational diffusion slow. For short dimers we observe rapid reorientations so that the rotational diffusion is faster than tr…
An aqueous suspension of the synthetic clay Laponite undergoes a transition from a liquid-like ergodic state to a glass-like nonergodic arrested state. In an observation that closely resembles the dynamical slowdown observed in supercooled liquids, the phenomenon of kinetic arrest in Laponite suspensions is accompanied by a growth in the $α$-relaxation time with increasing sample aging time, $t_{w}$. The ubiquitous dynamic slowdown and fragile behavior observed in glass forming liquids approaching the glass transition is typically ascribed to the growth in the size of distinct dynamical hetero…
We study bidisperse colloidal suspensions confined within glass microcapillary tubes to model the glass transition in confined cylindrical geometries. We use high speed three-dimensional confocal microscopy to observe particle motions for a wide range of volume fractions and tube radii. Holding volume fraction constant, we find that particles move slower in thinner tubes. The tube walls induce a gradient in particle mobility: particles move substantially slower near the walls. This suggests that the confinement-induced glassiness may be due to an interfacial effect.
The adsorption of single colloidal microparticles (0.5--1 $μ$m radius) at a water-oil interface has been recently studied experimentally using digital holographic microscopy [Kaz \textit{et al., Nat. Mater.}, 2012, \textbf{11}, 138--142]. An initially fast adsorption dynamics driven by capillary forces is followed by an unexpectedly slow relaxation to equilibrium that is logarithmic in time and can span hours or days. The slow relaxation kinetics has been attributed to the presence of surface "defects" with nanoscale dimensions (1--5\,nm) that induce multiple metastable configurations of the c…
We report the modifications of the microscopic dynamics of a colloidal glass submitted to shear. We use multispeckle diffusing wave spectroscopy to monitor the evolution of the spontaneous slow relaxation processes after the sample have been submitted to various straining. We show that high shear rejuvenates the system and accelerates its dynamics whereas moderate shear overage the system. We analyze this phenomena within the frame of the Bouchaud's trap model.
We propose a method to analyze the dynamics of systems exhibiting slow relaxation which is based on mesoscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The method allows us to obtain kinetic equations of the Fokker-Planck type for the probability functional and their corresponding Langevin equations. Our results are compared with the ones obtained by other authors.
We study the dynamic behaviour of concentrated colloidal hard spheres using Time Resolved Correlation, a light scattering technique that can detect the slow evolution of the dynamics in out-of-equilibrium systems. Surprisingly, equilibrium is reached a very long time after sample initialization, the non-stationary regime lasting up to three orders of magnitude more than the relaxation time of the system. Before reaching equilibrium, the system displays unusual aging behaviour. The intermediate scattering function decays faster than exponentially and its relaxation time evolves non-monotonicall…
Previous experiments have shown that spherical colloidal particles relax to equilibrium slowly after they adsorb to a liquid-liquid interface, despite the large interfacial energy gradient driving the adsorption. The slow relaxation has been explained in terms of transient pinning and depinning of the contact line on the surface of the particles. However, the nature of the pinning sites has not been investigated in detail. We use digital holographic microscopy to track a variety of colloidal spheres---inorganic and organic, charge-stabilized and sterically stabilized, aqueous and non-aqueous--…
The ability to assemble mesoscopic colloidal lattices above a surface is important for fundamental studies related with nucleation and crystallization, but also for a variety of technological applications in photonics and micro-engineering. Current techniques based on particle sedimentation above a lithographic template are limited by a slow deposition process and by the use of static templates, which make difficult to implement fast annealing procedures. Here it is demonstrated a method to realize and anneal a series of colloidal lattices displaying triangular, honeycomb or kagome-like symmet…
Brownian motion of colloidal particles in the quasi-two-dimensional (qTD) confinement displays distinct kinetic characters from that in bulk. Here we experimentally report a dynamic evolution of Brownian particles in the qTD system. The dynamic system displays a quasi-equilibrium state of colloidal particles performing Brownian motion. In the quasi-equilibrium process, the qTD confinement results in the coupling of particle motions, which slowly dampens the motion and interaction of particles until the final equilibrium state reaches. The theory is developed to explain coupling motions of Brow…
We investigate the competition between anisotropic excluded-volume and repulsive electrostatic interactions in suspensions of thin charged colloidal discs, by means of Monte-Carlo simulations and dynamical characterization of the structures found. We show that the original intrinsic anisotropy of the electrostatic potential between charged platelets, obtained within the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann formalism, not only rationalizes the generic features of the complex phase diagram of charged colloidal platelets such as Gibbsite and Beidellite clays, but also predicts the existence of novel stru…
We discuss the peculiarities of the Seebeck effect in stabilized electrolytes containing the colloidal particles. Its unusual feature is the two-stage character, with the linear increase of differential thermopower as the function of colloidal particles concentration $n_{\odot}$ during the first stage and dramatic drop of it at small $n_{\odot}$ during the second one (steady state). We show that the properties of the initial state are governed by the thermo-diffusion flows of the mobile ions of the stabilizing electrolyte medium itself and how the colloidal particles participate in formation o…
We study confined colloidal suspensions as a model system which approximates the behavior of confined small molecule glass-formers. Dense colloidal suspensions become glassier when confined between parallel glass plates. We use confocal microscopy to study the motion of confined colloidal particles. In particular, we examine the influence particles stuck to the glass plates have on nearby free particles. Confinement appears to be the primary influence slowing free particle motion, and proximity to stuck particles causes a secondary reduction in the mobility of free particles. Overall, particle…
We investigate the Brownian motion of boomerang colloidal particles confined between two glass plates. Our experimental observations show that the mean displacements are biased towards the center of hydrodynamic stress (CoH), and that the mean-square displacements exhibit a crossover from short time faster to long time slower diffusion with the short-time diffusion coefficients dependent on the points used for tracking. A model based on Langevin theory elucidates that these behaviors are ascribed to a superposition of two diffusive modes: the ellipsoidal motion of the CoH and the rotational mo…
Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements were performed on colloidal suspensions of Laponite\textsuperscript{\textregistered} at different concentrations in the range $C_\text{w}= (1.5÷3.0)$%. The slowing down of the dynamics induced by aging was monitored by following the temporal evolution of autocorrelation functions at different concentrations towards the gel and glass transition. Exploiting analogies with supercooled liquids approaching their glass transitions, an Angell plot for the structural relaxation times was drawn. Finally, the fragility of Laponite\textsuperscript{\textregister…
We here discuss the results of 3d MonteCarlo simulations of a minimal lattice model for gelling systems. We focus on the dynamics, investigated by means of the time autocorrelation function of the density fluctuations and the particle mean square displacement. We start from the case of chemical gelation, i.e. with permanent bonds, we characterize the critical dynamics as determined by the formation of the percolating cluster, as actually observed in polymer gels. By opportunely introducing a finite bond life time $τ_b$ the dynamics displays relevant changes and eventually the onset of a glassy…
Recent theories predict that when a supercooled liquid approaches the glass transition, particle clusters with a special "amorphous order" nucleate within the liquid, which lead to static correlations dictating the dramatic slowdown of liquid relaxation. The prediction, however, has yet to be verified in 3D experiments. Here, we design a colloidal system, where particles are confined inside spherical cavities with an amorphous layer of particles pinned at the boundary. Using this novel system, we capture the amorphous-order particle clusters and demonstrate the development of a static correlat…
We study the phase ordering dynamics of a two dimensional model colloidal solid using molecular dynamics simulations. The colloid particles interact with each other with a Hamaker potential modified by the presence of equatorial "patches" of attractive and negative regions. The total interaction potential between two such colloids is, therefore, strongly directional and has three-fold symmetry. Working in the canonical ensemble, we determine the tentative phase diagram in the density-temperature plane which features three distinct crystalline ground states viz, a low density honeycomb solid fo…
Although glassy relaxation is typically associated with disorder, here we report on a new type of glassy dynamics relating to dislocations within 2-D crystals of colloidal dimers. Previous studies have demonstrated that dislocation motion in dimer crystals is restricted by certain particle orientations. Here, we drag an optically trapped particle through such dimer crystals, creating dislocations. We find a two-stage relaxation response where initially dislocations glide until encountering particles that cage their motion. Subsequent relaxation occurs logarithmically slowly through a second pr…
Interactions between colloidal particles have hitherto usually been fixed by the suspension composition. Recent experimental developments now enable the control of interactions \emph{in-situ}. Here we use Brownian dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of controlling interactions on gelation, by "quenching" the system from an equilibrium fluid to a gel. We find that, contrary to the normal case of an instantaneous quench, where the local structure of the gel is highly disordered, controlled quenching results in a gel with a higher degree of local order. Under sufficiently slow quenchin…
The dynamics of a glass-forming material slow greatly near the glass transition, and molecular motion becomes inhibited. We use confocal microscopy to investigate the motion of colloidal particles near the colloidal glass transition. As the concentration in a dense colloidal suspension is increased, particles become confined in transient cages formed by their neighbors. This prevents them from diffusing freely throughout the sample. We quantify the properties of these cages by measuring temporal anticorrelations of the particles' displacements. The local cage properties are related to the subd…
We experimentally investigate the clogging and jamming of interacting paramagnetic colloids driven through a quenched disordered landscape of fixed obstacles. When the particles are forced to cross a single aperture between two obstacles, we find an intermittent dynamics characterized by an exponential distribution of burst size. At the collective level, we observe that quenched disorder decreases the particle ow, but it also greatly enhances the "faster is slower" effect, that occurs when increasing the particle speed. Further, we show that clogging events may be controlled by tuning the pair…
We report on a comprehensive theory-simulation-experimental study of collective and self-diffusion in suspensions of charge-stabilized colloidal spheres. In simulation and theory, the spheres interact by a hard-core plus screened Coulomb pair potential. Intermediate and self-intermediate scattering functions are calculated by accelerated Stokesian Dynamics simulations where hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) are fully accounted for. The study spans the range from the short-time to the colloidal long-time regime. Additionally, Brownian Dynamics simulation and mode-coupling theory (MCT) results are…
We investigate the nonequilibrium behavior of dense, plastic-crystalline suspensions of mildly anisotropic colloidal hard dumbbells under the action of an oscillatory shear field by employing Brownian dynamics computer simulations. In particular, we extend previous investigations, where we uncovered novel nonequilibrium phase transitions, to other aspect ratios and to a larger nonequilibrium parameter space, that is, a wider range of strains and shear frequencies. We compare and discuss selected results in the context of novel scattering and rheological experiments. Both simulations and experi…
Transport properties of a hard-sphere colloidal fluid are investigated by Brownian dynamics simulations. We implement a novel algorithm for the time-dependent velocity-autocorrelation function (VACF) essentially eliminating the noise of the bare random motion. The measured VACF reveals persistent anti-correlations manifested by a negative algebraic power-law tail $t^{-5/2}$ at all densities. At small packing fractions, the simulations fully agree with the analytic low-density prediction, yet the amplitude of the tail becomes dramatically suppressed as the packing fraction is increased. The mod…
We provide a detailed derivation of a recently developed first-principles approach to calculating averages in systems of interacting, spherical Brownian particles under time-dependent flow. Although we restrict ourselves to flows which are both homogeneous and incompressible, the time-dependence and geometry (e.g. shear, extension) are arbitrary. The approximations formulated within mode-coupling theory are particularly suited to dense colloidal suspensions and capture the slow relaxation arising from particle interactions and the resulting glass transition to an amorphous solid. The delicate …
Systems in which a short-ranged attraction and long-ranged repulsion compete are intrinsically frustrated, leading their structure and dynamics to be dominated either by mesoscopic order or by metastable disorder. Here we report the latter case in a colloidal system with long-ranged electrostatic repulsions and short-ranged depletion attractions. We find a variety of states exhibiting slow non-diffusive dynamics: a gel, a glassy state of clusters, and a state reminiscent of a Wigner glass. Varying the interactions, we find a continuous crossover between the Wigner and cluster glassy states, an…
We use confocal microscopy and time-resolved light scattering to investigate plasticity in a col- loidal polycrystal, following the evolution of the network of grain boundaries as the sample is submitted to thousands of shear deformation cycles. The grain boundary motion is found to be ballistic, with a velocity distribution function exhibiting non-trivial power law tails. The shear- induced dynamics initially slow down, similarly to the aging of the spontaneous dynamics in glassy materials, but eventually reach a steady state. Surprisingly, the cross-over time between the ini- tial aging regi…
We present simulation results addressing the dynamics of a colloidal system with attractive interactions close to gelation. Our interaction also has a soft, long range repulsive barrier which suppresses liquid-gas type phase separation at long wavelengths. The new results presented here lend further weight to an intriguing picture emerging from our previous simulation work on the same system. Whereas mode coupling theory (MCT) offers quantitatively good results for the decay of correlators, closer inspection of the dynamics reveals a bimodal population of fast and slow particles with a very lo…
We systematically study the relationship between equilibrium and non-equilibrium phase diagrams of a system of short-ranged attractive colloids. Using Monte Carlo and Brownian dynamics simulations we find a window of enhanced crystallization that is limited at high interaction strength by a slowing down of the dynamics and at low interaction strength by the high nucleation barrier. We find that the crystallization is enhanced by the metastable gas-liquid binodal by means of a two-stage crystallization process. First, the formation of a dense liquid is observed and second the crystal nucleates …
